Discriminating against non-iPhone owners! I demand you take some of the coolness from iPhone users to the less fortunate!

Maybe Obama will help!

Damn!

I went to get an iPhone for myself and lil Reine, and apart from the fact that they didn't have any right now, they told me they could not let us get them anyway, because my current contract hasn't reached the point where I can "upgrade".

I pointed out to them that if I got 2 iPhones and 2 iPhone plans, I would be paying them more money each month. In other words, they stood to get more from me each month.

No dice. Have to wait 'til next March.

Hat tip for what? The LgF icon that Charles created himself, or the John Edwards story that's plastered solid all over electronic media?

This might just push me over the top for getting one. my contract is up in a few days.

Sprint's "everything" plan for 99/month is very tempting, but I just don't think I can bare windows mobile or a blackberry interface.

I've had my iPhone since it came out last summer, it's well worth it. I haven't had any issues wtih AT&T, but I've never used Sprint, so I can't really compare services for you. Just know that the iPhone hardware is Awesomeness!

Apple removes I Am Rich, a $1,000 featureless iPhone application

Eight people bought the software, which has no function except to alert other people that you have money.

By Mark Milian
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

August 8, 2008

Eight iPhone owners have joined an elite clan: Their gadget is running a program that cost nearly $1,000.

When the iPhone first hit the market in June 2007, those who paid the $499 entry price -- and signed the two-year AT&T contract -- owned a status symbol. A year later, we have the iPhone 3G, Apple Inc.'s speedier, sleeker and, most important, less expensive smart phone, which introduced a section for downloading third-party applications.

Now that the phone is affordable enough for a wider audience, a new status symbol has emerged: a seemingly useless application called I Am Rich.

Its function is exactly what the name implies: to alert people that you have money in the bank. I Am Rich was available for purchase from the phone's App Store for, get this, $999.99 -- the highest amount a developer can charge through the digital retailer, said Armin Heinrich, the program's developer.

Once downloaded, it doesn't do much -- a red icon sits on the iPhone home screen like any other application, with the subtext "I Am Rich." Once activated, the user is treated to a large, glowing gem. That's about it. For a thousand dollars.

Apple, which didn't respond to requests for comment, apparently had some problems with I Am Rich. After initially approving it for distribution, the company has since removed it from the store.

Heinrich, a German software developer, has yet to hear back from Apple concerning the removal. "I have no idea why they did it and am not aware of any violation of the rules to sell software on the App Store," Heinrich said in an e-mail to The Times on Thursday.

But Apple couldn't pull it down before curious aristocrats had purchased it -- eight times. Six people from the U.S., one from Germany and one from France dropped a grand for the gem in the first 24 hours it was available, Heinrich said. That's $5,600 in revenue for Heinrich and $2,400 for Apple, which collects 30% of each sale for "store upkeep."

In the e-mail, Heinrich said there seemed to be a market for the program. "I am sure a lot more people would like to buy it -- but currently can't do so," Heinrich said. "The App is a work of Art and included a 'secret mantra' -- that's all."

A possible explanation for its removal: A screen shot of an App Store review that has been circulating around the Web recently, showing a user's complaint that he purchased it accidentally. "I saw this app with a few friends and we jokingly clicked 'buy' thinking it was a joke, to see what would happen. . . . THIS IS NO JOKE. . . . DO NOT BUY THIS APP AND APPLE PLEASE REMOVE THIS FROM THE APP STORE," it read.

I Am Rich isn't the first software that has been removed from Apple's store. Box Office, a movie showtime resource, and NetShare, which let users connect a computer to the Internet using the iPhone's 3G wireless data service, disappeared without a trace.

Had tmobile for the past 3 years or so. Has been okay, but have needed something far more substantial than this sidekick for business apps. particularly, need to be able to read docs and spreadsheets that come from my pop3 mail. However, as much as I like the q and the blackjack, I can't bring myself to get windows mobile, with all the bad reviews out there and people saying it's slow. If I got the blue screen of death on my phone, I'd use it for particle-beam ammunition.

if I get an Iphone, it looks like "mobile me" is worth it, too. I have been inches from getting an Idisc account anyway.

Get an old iPhone, do the "unlock" and "jailbreaks" software hacks (often combined into one), and then you can use T-Mobile ON your iPhone! That's what I'm going to do.

Whatever T-Mobile has, you can do it on your iPhone, once you've unlocked it.

But be aware that this works only for first-generation iPhones. The new 3G ones have not yet been fully hacked, so you can't switch to a non-AT&T carrier (unless you buy the super-expensive planless version). So you can't get 3G speed.

The thing to keep in mind is what I said the other day. You have multiple types of GSM networks and CDMA. As long as your phone is compatible with the network you want and is unlocked (with a clear esn) you can use it. Apple made it a little harder, but still doable.

50 zombie  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 2:43:58pm

What's annoying about the iPhone home page is that you can't delete any of the built-in apps, even if you have no use for them. But I discovered a workaround: you can create a second "home page," then move all the unwanted apps over there, and then never look at it -- leaving just the ones you want on the main home page.

So, I moved "Stocks," "Calendar," "YouTube" and "iTunes" off the main page, and then added "LGF" "Google Advanced Search" button in their place! A nice big juicy green football.

While I don't own an iPhone, I know the whole navigation metaphor is outstanding.

My problem with iPhone is Big Brother in Cupertino (iBrother?) And I have written code for a variety of mobile platforms and find the trend towards locking down platforms to be a backwards step, and Apple seems to be contributing to that. (In fairness to Apple, RIM got it going by requiring signed apps and restricted access to many api calls.)

I am therefore hopeful that the other big brother in the valley (Google) can get android some tailwind so we can have more open standards for mobile devices.

Yep, just wait for a CDMA iphone. Many companies like to do phones for both networks to expand profit. Not sure if they will ever go that way though.

re: #56 karmic_inquisitor

While I don't own an iPhone, I know the whole navigation metaphor is outstanding.

My problem with iPhone is Big Brother in Cupertino (iBrother?) And I have written code for a variety of mobile platforms and find the trend towards locking down platforms to be a backwards step, and Apple seems to be contributing to that. (In fairness to Apple, RIM got it going by requiring signed apps and restricted access to many api calls.)

I am therefore hopeful that the other big brother in the valley (Google) can get android some tailwind so we can have more open standards for mobile devices.

I don't have a problem with capitalism. In fact, I look at it as a capitalist. If I want to create an application for mobile users, I look at who is selling what platform for the target market.

The market for iPhone is growing fast, but Apple seems intent on owning the add on application market for it. So I wonder what I can add that Apple won't try to short circuit or replace. Microsoft has been actually pretty good about keeping Windows CE / Windows Mobile open, but are starting to encroach with "managed applications". They also have so much "bloat" from supporting old APIs that you get needlessly complex applications in a short amount of time.

Blackberry has been great - they have a signed app requirement, but once you get credentialed as a developer, the whole thing is pretty wide open.

I am trying to figure out what Apple will ultimately allow developers to do in order to work out a feature map for an application. It is just a bit opaque right now, and the iBrother tactics are a bit anoying.

I've found WM5 to be great with it's support for open source software. The only problem I have is most games for WM won't resize to 240x240. This is a major gripe for me, though I've heard there is some software that may help me with this.

Depends on who you ask. Probably yes. The Serbs lost their right to govern the Muslims of Kosovo for trying to kill them all. I'm not trying to smear you, I'm just trying to understand the situation and your take on it. I find it hard to understand why people would still support the Serbs in this situation. I have about as much sympathy for the Serbs as I do the Palestinians. I've found WM5 to be great with it's support for open source software. The only problem I have is most games for WM won't resize to 240x240. This is a major gripe for me, though I've heard there is some software that may help me with this.

It is simply poor coding.

There are apis going back to the early windows CE days that allow the developer to adapt to the form factor of the device, including screen size and orientation (which can change with slide out keyboards like on HTC units).

I write in C++ on WM, so I can change whatever I want whenever I want and the apps run fast. But it is easy to create memory / stability problems if you aren't careful.

And what do you have to say about his, and your, agenda of stirring up fights between blogs right now?

In the words of Mr Spencer himself -- I was "bested intellectually."

I guess it takes a genius to understand how Milosevic was the true victim in the Balkans -- framed by an American-Iranian conspiracy to arm Bosnians. If you tell me the dude was framed, then score a victory for truth and the genius it takes to see it. I'll gladly step aside and admit I am not intelligent enough to understand it.

From the American Council for Kosovo website:

In addition to its Officers, the Council also relies heavily on the contributions of members of a separate Advisory Board composed of distinguished authorities with experience and expertise in relevant fields – government, military, politics, journalism, religion, academia, and others. The Council’s Advisory Board members might not agree on everything about American policy to date in the Balkan region or about what would be best future course among the many possible options. But they do agree on what course should not be taken: Kosovo independence is the wrong choice for America.

It is intellectually dishonest for Mr. Spencer to pretend he is open-minded on Kosovo's independence.

Now we're talking. Can you point me to your best article on why I should side with the Serbs. I'm willing to listen but it's going to be a tough sell.

While I don't have a dog in this fight, I am a long time poster and longer time reader here. Years back I posted on Serbian atrocities and got attacked on several fronts.

One guy accused me of being a Croat and (by association) a Nazi.

Another set of folks accused me of being soft on Islamists.

Take it as you might Robert (I am a fan of your work and admire you), but there is a basis for folks here to be skeptical around the whole issue of Serbia. We've had many a Serbian nationalist come on board and end up promoting genocide in one form or another.

Killgore has some justification for skepticism even if you find it offensive.

Thank you for your work. I appreciate someone who goes the extra distance.

Please stop treating entire ethnic groups [i.e "the Serbs", "the Kosovars"] as if they are analogous to an ideologically defined group [i.e al Qaeda]. Al-Qaeda in particular and jihad in general are to be opposed everywhere, but the way to do it is not by fighting one fascist ideology with another. Western support, American cultural influx, and free enterprise are the antidote. The surest way to radicalize Albanian/Kosovar Muslims (and moderate Muslims everywhere) is to abandon them in the claws of those who want to annihilate them. At that point, these people would have no other choice of survivor but to turn to well-funded extremists.

But from what I can tell the culture of Kosovo (the people and the government) look to be a reliable ally and capable of peaceful and prosperous existence. The Serbs? Not so much.

I think there are probably elements in both that could be an ally and elements that could be dangerous. The trick is identifying who's who. I think the main people fighting this out in the blogosphere have very much created blanket descriptions for both sides.

How many Democrats does it take to lose the most easily winnable election in American history? Not many. Just a few "close advisers" to Barack Obama who tell him a bunch of asinine stuff and he ends up listening to them instead of his own heart. As the party hacks in the past two elections have proven, once they get the candidate's ear, the rest of us might just as well order pizza and stay inside for the next four years.

When I was in the 7th grade, they put me into their experimental "gifted" class. We were all to choose a country to write a report on. I chose Yugoslavia, thinking that would be cool because my grandmother was born there. First thing I learned from Gramma was, "I was not born in Yugoslavia, it was the Austro-Hungarian Empire. And I'm not 'Yugoslavian,' I'm Slovene." I started reading a few articles and books, and stayed confused. I wrote a terrible paper. I bailed from the gifted class for 8th grade. Then in 1980, I was traveling in Europe, and had tentative plans to visit relatives near Ljubljana. I didn't go because Tito was very sick, and people were telling me that all heck was going to break loose after he died. Who knew that it was going to take ten years for that to happen?

That's the big question... will people learn from history? And to bring it home to America, will the multiculturalists learn from both history and the rest of the world?

The Balkans is what you get when two or more different ethnic groups, different "peoples", with substantially different cultures, mores, standards-of-behavior, etc. occupy the same tract of land. There is overwhelming evidence that conflict is inevitable; there is little evidence of harmonious coexistence. We have a strong, nearly unprecedented ability to absorb different "peoples" and turn them into Americans... at the price of most of their original culture... and yet we are supposed to discard the successful path of our past for a method that has failed, and is failing now, everywhere else it has been tried.

Why?

The Seattle toilet tale is nearing the final chapter.

Seattle's high-tech toilets back on eBay

The high-tech toilets that washed out in Seattle are back on sale on eBay.

There were no offers last month when the starting bid for each of the five restrooms was $89,000. This time they are priced to move, and bids Friday were around $1,000. The final amount will be determined next week when the auction closes.

The city council voted to sell the toilets because they attracted prostitutes and drug users.

Four years ago the city spent $5 million on the self-cleaning, stand-alone toilets and put most of them in parks. Officials hoped they would be used by tourists, shoppers and the homeless.

Back in the beginning I said it would never work.

In that regard I've always admired Gen. Teddy Roosevelt Jr. who landed several miles away from his assigned area on Utah Beach and despite the risks decided that he had to "start the war from right here" and proceed against the enemy from where he was with what he had.

Ultimately the Nazis, the Communists, and the jihadis are just the sacks of meat that contain the Evil which is our true enemy. Eventually we will defeat the jihadis, and Evil will find another host...

Pakistan's ruling coalition last night pledged to impeach President Pervez Musharraf, in the clearest challenge yet to the authority of the country's proUS ruler.

The move has deepened concerns about the country's political stability and the reaction of senior generals in the coming days to a legal challenge to the former head of the military will be crucial. Pakistan has been ruled by the military for more than half its 61-year history as an independent state.

Apple hasn't commented on the discovery by a hacker that the iPhone can download a list of "unauthorized" applications and disable them.

Zdziarski discovered in the iPhone a cache that can hold a list of unauthorized applications and a URL to a page on Apple's servers. The URL is apparently used to download a new list from time to time.

Zdziarski later said in an update that he was able to feed his own list into an iPhone and effectively kill applications that tried to use the GPS.

ENORMOUS scale. I don't want to think of the other implications. LOL.
I am going to try to keep my "at one with the world " thoughts going on for a while longer. I am watching with my 11 year old daughter.

re: #315 Cognito

The Chinese opening ceremonies are indeed stunning.

And for some reason I can't quite put my finger on -- or don't want to -- it's completely frightening.

Enormous scale, single-minded precision.

Perfect choreography creates a whole, through submission of the individual.

Cog.. No politics allowed my friend.. the show is fantastic..hey in LA they had 88 pianos in perfect pitch and song..Compared to today..just quant..I'm very impressed.. Alot of other nationals inc americans were behind this...whoops it's back on..bb next break

I feel sort of bad saying it, but the opening ceremony is creepy.

326 Tarkus289  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 6:01:07pm

The North Koreans also are able to put on stunning shows of precision choreography, they practice in ways that are unimaginable, indeed scary.

I hope our teams kick everybody Else's ass.

Actually Microsoft has no interest in the phone. The cell companies decide what features they will allow or not. And what you install is your choice. If it worksss with Windows mobile...have fun.

You might not have noticed it, most people didn't at first. A few techies noticed the new entries in their Windows Update file. They posted in a few online forums, and then many other folks checked and there it was! I think it was XP, but I'm working from memory... it was about 9 mos. - 1 yr. ago.

Charles: you may want to check this out on Hot Air.

Especially everything connected to this post:

wise_man on August 8, 2008 at 6:33 PM The man you speak of is none other than Charles Johnson of littlegreenfootballs.com If Charles decides to investigate a story, it gets done with the professionalism that we used to expect from a journalist working for and getting paid the big bucks by the big media. Those days passed many decades ago. The MSM and the DNC are one in the same; working together side by side for the common ideology of Liberalism. I used to believe that our government (specifically the Judicial branch) should address this issue and make the necessary corrections-punishment; I now believe it’s best left to the people so that these scumbags can die the slow and embarrassing death they so richly deserve. Having the Enquirer beat the snot out of these self professed “big timers” has got to sting the ol’ ego real good. CBS, NBC, ABC, NYT, WAPO, LAT, Tribune, et al; the world just watched as the Enquirer buried you while you were busy trying your damnest to bury this story and provide cover for one of your own. You tools don’t fool anybody anymore. Just a few year ago @ CaptainsQuarters, we had a lengthy debate about whether or not their was absolute media bias in the media; now their is no longer an argument… It has become accepted as a reality that can’t be denied. Unpleasant business. They need to get their head out of their ass and treat home pc's and laptops the way the treat WM enabled phones. Hands off after they go out the door. The only problem with that is that they put the responsibility for upgrades into the hands of the equipment manufacturer. My treo can't be updated to WM6 at this time because Palm won't do it, they say it's Altells problem. Alltel says they aren't planning on updating to 6 on that phone. So a hacked version is the only way I have left to go. (Though I'm not sure I want to deal with the slowdown that people say occur when you upgrade to 6)

Damn!

I went to get an iPhone for myself and lil Reine, and apart from the fact that they didn't have any right now, they told me they could not let us get them anyway, because my current contract hasn't reached the point where I can "upgrade".

You should be able to upgrade now just by starting your plan over, IOW your new 2-yr iPhone plan would date from when you buy the iPhone. I think they are saying that because they dont have any, :-)

379 Conservative Physicist  Sun, Aug 10, 2008 1:01:23pm

I finally got the LGF icon to show up. When I would add the website to my home buttons the football wouldn't show up. However when I waited a few seconds it finally appeared.

Right now I'm in WV in the National Radio Quiet Zone. We went from NRAO to Snowshoe and I got a cell signal at snowshoe but it was intermittent. That may be why I had trouble getting the football to appear immediately.

I will say that even with a low signal the websites opened reasonably fast considering my location (middle of nowhere with little cell service). And even when I lose cell service (there is none near NRAO) the GPS continues to track me. So I am quite happy with the iPhone and have tested it in one of the most remote places in the US and it works pretty well even here.

re: #230 Killgore Trout

Ok, Getting caught up on reading and left where I started, although slightly better informed. Medaura18586 is right. The American Council for Kosovo, James Jatras and Milan Ivanović seem to be unsavory characters. I agreed with Mr. Spencer that Al Qaeda should be opposed in Kosovo however the Serbs are not the ones to do it. The Serbs have their own violent and genocidal agenda. They're not a reliable ally on anything. I would trust the Kosovars to deal with Al Qaeda influence with our help. The Serbs can't be trusted, they continue to demonstrate this.

Dang...late again to a really interesting thread.

I agree, Killgore, Medaura is right. This is the same argument that we had with those who argued that we 'needed' the white power loons in Belgium and Sweden, the only difference being that the Serbs practiced what they preach more recently, making the issue even more clear cut.
