Olympics Open Thread the First

Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 7:46:54 pm PDT

The broadcast media are doing that antiquated “time-delay” thing again, and the Olympics opening ceremonies are just about to start being shown on the West Coast. So here’s an open thread, as NBC does their best to suck up to the Chinese communists while pretending they aren’t.

I missed it...fill me in lizards.

4 Occasional Reader  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:48:28pm

Single most babealicious athlete I've seen so far was with the Paraguayan team.

5 maddogg  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:48:52pm

I like synchronized swimming, not sure why.....can't be the athletes.

6 Utah Chris  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:49:15pm

So far... very ..... impressive..... did you notice the fireworks were obscured by "mist".

7 LoFlyer  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:49:16pm

Haven't seen it. Just can't get into communist propaganda. Sort of like why I avoid Google....

8 Sharmuta  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:49:41pm

It's on ABC? I though NBC had the rights.

9 Fionn MacCumhaill  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:49:53pm

I'll have to go to the Web for any of this stuff - I tossed my TV set about 8 years ago, and have never missed it.

10 zombie  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:50:11pm

I will not be watching one second of the Olympics this time around.

Reasons, in no particular order:

1. I don't care about sports.
2. The Chinese government is repressive and using this as an attempted propaganda coup.
3. I don't watch TV anyway.
4. I'm too busy with work and creative projects.
5. Did I mention I don't care about sports?

11 lawhawk  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:50:57pm

NBC. Not ABC.

Haven't watched the tube in a week, and haven't missed a thing....

13 itellu3times  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:51:10pm

I'll watch it until the ads get too much, after all the Dodgers are playing the Giants, and that's live.

14 Metal Man  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:51:23pm

I saw the Syrian team come out and thought the looked to fat to compete.

Are they going to compete under mideast rules where it's the most outrageous lie about your capabilities that wins?

15 Utah Chris  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:51:45pm

My 9 and 11 year olds are diggin it. This is their first and my first with HD. Funny about all the political commentary as the country's are marching in.... here comes Pakistan with comments on Musharoff (sic).

I bow to you in admiration!

I don't watch TV as a general rule, but I haven't taken the step of actually tossing the TV. I keep it for watching DVD movies, and the rare occasional must-see program. Of which the Olympics is not one.

17 maddogg  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:52:19pm

18 jorline  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:52:34pm

I think the best moustache wins, who was still breathing at the time of the competition, medals awarded posthumously if splodedopes intervene before the ceremony.

I presume the commentary was approved by the Chinese censors?

22 lawhawk  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:53:25pm

And I've already skipped the opening ceremonies. It's my own personal boycott to the Potemkin vision set forth by the Chinese to cover up their rampant violation of human rights and environmental record that shows clearly through the polluted haze (oh, I'm sorry, I'm supposed to believe that it's a mist - a fog).

Let me guess. Lots of dancing. Fireworks.

And the nations parade in.

The torch gets lit. A few speeches.

3+ hours.

Did I miss anything?

23 Noam Sayin'  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:53:31pm

Too damn many events in the Olympics these days.

Really, now. Do we need an Olympic event for Tiddly-Winks?

re: #10 zombie

I too will not be watching, however, I do like sports. But I cannot condone China being given the Games by giving it any attention. Will anyone notice? I doubt it, but at least I feel comfortable with my position.

25 Occasional Reader  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:54:48pm

This year they've added Wii events for the first time.

26 Utah Chris  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:55:00pm

5. Did I mention I don't care about sports?

The opening ceremony was really nice. Very artistic and amazing in scope.

31 ErnieG  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:56:43pm

They had several very spectacular presentations that were variations on the same theme: thousands of people drumming, or dancing, or doing karate moves. They were perfectly synchronized, and arrayed in perfect lines.

This may be the Chinese idea of perfection, but it really creeped me out.

32 Mich-again  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:57:11pm

Meanwhile Paul Bugeye Bugalla is on CNN defending John Edwards because after all, he didn't waterboard anyone.

But: It was amazing. What a spectacle. Wow.

And of course, this being China, the fireworks bidget was pretty hefty.

re: #10 zombie

LOL! Well, most of that justifies your post, except the all encompassing "I don't like sports." If you don't like sports you could not like the Olympics whether held in Katmandu or the moon!

Me? I love sports. I love the Olympics. I DO get teary eyed watching the parade of countries before the games. I love watching the sports - especially, in this order: Equestrian (where men and women complete as equals), gymnastics, swimming, diving, and, of course....the USA basketball team! Go all. Have a blast and politics be damned.

It's already made a statement by having GWB there, and the flag bearer for our team. We've made our political statement. Now, LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

40 Occasional Reader  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 7:58:50pm

The opening ceremony is making clear that we have WAY too many countries. We need to consolidate some of them. (Maybe that's what Russia's trying at the moment.)

OT, but I've emailed my Senators...both of them are members of "Gang of 10" mentioned in Kimberley Strassel's article, "Republican Energy Fumble."

A sample:

I've just finished reading Kimberley Strassel's column, "Republican Energy Fumble" in The Wall Street Journal...My mood is best described as OUTRAGE!

Instead of farming out the work to lowest bidding, but hottest design and branding firm, the Beijing Olympic Committee ‘hired’ its own university design professors to create for the Olympics 2008. In particular, the official mascots of Beijing 2008 were conceived and born in these shiny new halls of the Art and Design Academy under the direction of Professor Wu, a high-ranking member of the Party. Although, somewhat insipidly and overly cute by Western standards, the set of five mascots cleverly epitomize cultural memes of China, symbolize aspects of the Olympic spirit, the elements of nature, and even form a language pun in Mandarin, when their names are properly sequenced. They are unmistakably an inside job. Until the court of public opinion meets next summer along with merchandising sales and media ratings, the verdict is out on Fuwa, the Five Friendlies.

OT, but its open thread so how can this be off the topic... Over the last month, the politics of my employer, DeKalb County government went through some significant changes as our northern sector of the county, the citizens of "Dunwoody" elected to form their on "City of Dunwoody" due to the majority black county ignoring issues concerning minority white north DeKalb. "Dunwoody" was the "cash-cow" of DeKalb and DeKalb has already instituted budget cuts for the loss of revenue. I find this infuriating because all DeKalb government had to do was go up to north DeKalb, hold four or five town hall meetings and ask Dunwoody citizens what they wanted from DeKalb government and provide the services. So Dunwoody is gone and will be forming their new government including IT. The other major change is our new CEO or "great leader" has been elected. His name is Burrel Ellis and we are hoping for the best because he does appear to be sincere in his desire to make the county a better place. He has already stated his desire to privatize my department, Information Systems due to a minor financial scandal regarding over-spending by my department sanctioned by the CEO and executive assistant. The bottom line is that I could be looking at early retirement and increased salary from my new employers, either Dunwoody or a commercial contractor that privatizes my department. I would double my gross pay. I am leaving my options open...

We got to see the USA vs USSR game live which is way better than 'knowing' the outcome while you watch it.

But what was more cool was that I bought 4 tickets for $50 to the 'hockey semifinals'

Yes, but they're Super Bowl Quality commercials. At least, they cost big bucks.

The worst thing about the commercial breaks is that God-awful Olympic fanfare music. It's loud. It's pretentious. It's been overdone. And worst of all, it's tacky.

Ha! I just can't top that -- so, I had to rely on the Chomskybot:

For any transformation which is sufficiently diversified in application to be of any interest, this analysis of a formative as a pair of sets of features is not quite equivalent to nondistinctness in the sense of distinctive feature theory. It appears that the earlier discussion of deviance is, apparently, determined by a descriptive fact. It may be, then, that the natural general principle that will subsume this case appears to correlate rather closely with the strong generative capacity of the theory. This suggests that the theory of syntactic features developed earlier suffices to account for a parasitic gap construction. So far, the descriptive power of the base component is necessary to impose an interpretation on a general convention regarding the forms of the grammar.

Is it me, or does the "Bird's Nest Stadium" look like the inside of a cylon base star? I'll say this for the Chi-coms--they can get 2008 people to line up and do things in perfect synchronization on a field. Be forewarned. It was very pretty--but as my Dad says, when the Chinese come, they will just keep coming. My best friend's infant daughter was rescued from a box sitting on a street in China. Human rights anyone?

Well I'm probably going to have some lizards pull their knives out, but I'm throwing in my two cents.

NBC has not kissed up to China. Instead I think they have been very rude. The purpose of the Olympics is for all nations to set aside their differences, meet in peace, and compete in sports. China is putting on quite a beautiful show and all NBC could do during the whole broadcast was to throw out "zingers" against China and their policies. NBC and most of the western media have been very rude and ungracious guests.

I know our media hates China. The White House Press Corps had to go through a regular airline terminal like all other visitors to this country instead of getting to go through the VIP terminal reserved for Heads of State. They were angry that they did not get to go directly to their hotel rooms, but had to wait like everyone else and have the luggage searched and be questioned. So, they report the story as being "detained" by Chinese authorities. To be truthful, I have yet to see a 100% positive story about these Olympics and about China being the host from our western media.

The media has our culture so used to the idea that "freedom of speech" means "freedom" from manners, politeness, courtesy, and responsibility. The media doesn't like being told that they must be polite, that they must respect other people's homes, cultures, and countries. They don't like being told to "shut up" once in awhile and to "behave". NBC's rude behavior last night embarrassed me and embarrassed our country. I would never behave that way as a guest in someone's home and I hope my fellow lizards would not either.

I don't agree with everything that China does, but to be truthful, China has grown by leaps and bounds towards freedom and democracy these last 10 years due to their growing capitalism. I think they will be just fine in the long run and will find their own path to freedom.

This is the Olympics and China is being a gracious host to the world. Let us set aside our politics and ask our media to set aside theirs and be good and polite guests.

Let the games begin!

I was absolutely captivated last night by the artistry, technology, beauty, and precision of the opening ceremonies. It was breathtaking. Then I read this 2002 article detailing the brutal price to innocent citizens for the sake of looking good to the world at the Olympic games.

In the past 12 years, more than 760,000 people in Beijing have lost their homes to the demolition crews, more people than live in Baltimore, Annapolis and Towson combined. In putting a modern face on China's ancient capital, a city of 14 million, the Communist Party has relied on the same bare-knuckle tactics that have helped keep it in power here long after communism's demise elsewhere.

The government, which treats urban planning like a matter of national security, often gives families no more than a few weeks' notice before demolishing their houses so that even those people foolhardy enough to challenge the decision have little time to organize. Residents who stand in the way have been crushed or bought off.

Officials like to claim that China has 5,000 years of history, but in leveling many of Beijing's oldest neighborhoods, the government has destroyed mile after mile of the labyrinthine alleys and old courtyard homes that were the capital's most distinguishing features.

In futile efforts to save their homes or defend neighbors, families have suffered beatings or risked jail. In the scramble for new, affordable housing to replace what they have lost, families have quarreled over government compensation and split up after decades of living under one roof. In some alleys, neighbor has turned against neighbor, brother against brother.

Demolition crews have targeted architectural treasures and destroyed shops that provided their owners their only livelihood. This boom of destruction and rebuilding is further fueled by the city's preparations for the summer Olympic Games of 2008, an event leaders here see as a stage for showing the world a modern, sophisticated capital. "The speed with which Beijing is being redeveloped is unprecedented," says Zhang Jie, a professor of urban planning at Qinghua University, the MIT of China.

So, to anyone here thinking the Chinese are these wonderfully artistic, sensitive people we should be gracious and courteous to, go and read the entire article - it will definitely help put things in perspective.

The point I am trying to make is put the politics aside for two weeks and let China have it's moment in the sun. You read articles written by journalists that probably didn't even witness the event or been to China. I speak with Chinese that actually live there and they are bursting with pride over being host to the Olympics. We can argue about who is being more truthful, the media or the people actually living there, but this is not the proper time for argument or debate. This is the time for all nations to put aside their differences and gather in peace for celebration and sports competition.

Let's just enjoy the games for the next two weeks, and then we can get back to pointing out everyone else's faults and shortcomings.

Go USA!

No one is finger-pointing - just knowing there was a heavy price paid by ordinary citizens for all the gorgeous pagentry taking place to impress the world.

Call me old fashioned; in this case the end is not justified by the means.

But how accurate is that article? So many times it is pointed out on this site the deliberate lies and misdirecting spin stories that the media tries to pass off as "truth". That is one reason why the media hates LGF because we have caught them many times. I am quite certain that Charles and our fellow lizards at LGF are not on Dan Rather's Christmas Card List.

Look at the sheer numbers of people (760,000) this article quotes as being displaced. Not at any time did they say they were in China to witness it nor has any Chinese I speak with made the same statements. When Obama spoke in Berlin, they tried to make us believe that 200,000 Germans showed up though officials put the count much lower at about 20,000. Which figure did the rest of the media use? The correct one or the one that promotes their agenda and candidate?

Our media is quite willing to lie about our President, our Country, and other countries such as Israel. Why would they "change their spots" and tell the truth about China?

Go USA!

Click of the mouse - just use your research skills and check this out yourself. I tried "razing bejing for olympics", "bejing being razed for 12 years" "why china is razing bejing"...you get the drift. You'll find a plethora of articles on the subject. Multiple eyewitnesses, multiple news sources. And yes our media has been caught in lies, but they pretty much limit their lying to tarnish anything conservative while giving a blind eye to anything left of center. China would be in the latter group.
