Edwards Furious with ABC News for Breaking Affair Story Early

Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 5:51:21 pm PDT

Even as John Edwards was trying to appear sincere and apologetic in public, behind the scenes he was cynically attempting to manipulate the media in order to minimize the damage. He’s reportedly furious with ABC News for breaking the story of his extramarital affair early on Friday, instead of waiting for the Olympics opening ceremonies to start.

According to multiple sources, Edwards was apoplectic that ABC News broke the story on its website and began promoting it early on Friday, giving the rest of the media a chance to play catch-up and site [sic] ABC News’ report. (Representatives for Edwards did not return a call or e-mail for comment.)

Edwards subsequently made solicitous calls to multiple reporters including CBS News’ Bob Schieffer, who also talked to a distraught Elizabeth Edwards.

Edwards had hoped to control the news cycle by making his admission late on a Friday night when the country was watching the Olympics and the long weekend yawned ahead.

Edwards: "Why can't we have a media like the one in China?"

Ross and his producers at ABC News had been insistently dogging Edwards for some time, uncovering the money trail from an Edwards’ campaign contributor, Fred Baron, to Hunter, who was installed in a $3 million house in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Let's get this straight: He cheated on his cancer-stricken wife. He repeatedly lied about this affair. The media sat on the story for ages. He admitted the truth on a Friday afternoon to minimize news coverage. But he's upset because one news broadcast didn't bury it in the Olympic coverage?

No public figure has been subject to more constant abuse, much of it grossly unfair, than Bush II. I am sure it is painful for him and even more so for Laura, yet he has never complained about it.

33 Steffan  Sat, Aug 9, 2008 6:11:36pm

WTF did he expect? You would think by now that the lesson would have sunk in: The longer you try to hide something like this, the worse it bites you in the ass when it comes out.

I think his main problem is that of any Democratic politician: they are so accustomed to the MSM rolling over for them, it shocks them to the core when journalists remember they're supposed to report the news. Obama's reaction to a reporter's less-than-fawning questions is telling. I sincerely doubt any of them (with the possible exception of Hillary) would be able to withstand what GWB has had to put up with for the last seven years.

In a just world, Silky would find himself disbarred over ethics questions. We'll have to see what the folks down in Carolina do. I haven't been watching, but I'll give odds they don't like any part of this.

39 Bob in Breckenridge  Sat, Aug 9, 2008 6:14:11pm

ABC News broke this? ROFLMAO! It was the National Enquirer which broke this story months ago, BECAUSE THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA WOULDN'T DO IT'S JOB!
ABC, CNN, NBC, MSNBC, and CBS knew about this months ago, when the Breck Girl was still a Presidential candidate, but chose not to report on it until they had no choice.
It says a lot about the sorry-ass state of the MSM these days when we have to get the real "scoop" from supposedly unreliable tabloids, such as the National Enquirer, while those claiming to be "real" journalists do their best to cover-up the indiscretions of those they're cheering for and acting as press secretaries for, usually liberal candidates.

Of all the Dem candidates, Edwards was the one who set off alarm bells as a BIG PHONY! Socialist considerations aside, Obama seems more a pure opportunist while Hilary has no scruples whatsoever. But Edwards' sanctimonious class warfare message, preening smirk and odious tort lawyer background repulsed me from the start. When I read about how he spooked Jawn Carry with the "i've never told anyone this before" comment on two occasions, it was confirmed for me.

Wait for more dirt to come out on his buddy Baron, the nonexistant paternity test ("I have the hat to this day") and multitudinous inconsistencies and ommisions.

Mahmoud Darwish is dead

Darwish's work isn't well-known to many Americans, but he was an absolutely stunning poet, full of vibrant, concrete, often surprising imagery. Add to that a pervasive sense of loss, an overpowering elegiac worldview forged in the fires of the Nakba and the Palestinian Diaspora.

I don't have much to say: the loss to international poetry and progressivism, as well as to the Palestinian people, is huge, and I'm not a scholar of his work.

Ack! Thanks for correcting me, I thought he made his money on the tobacco lawsuits.

Mea culpa.

I remember his campaign, where he moaned about the lack of medical coverage and couldn't believe his arrogance. A big chunk of medical expenses are do to fraudulent lawsuits like his. Then it was reported that he used an IRS loophole to avoid paying hundreds of thousands into Medicare taxes.

I don't know if he had anything to do with tobacco lawsuits or not. He went after any group with money.

re: #64 ploome hineni

you can probably count on the fingers on one hand

a 'ruler' who has been monogamous, or 'faithful' as we understand it, to one woman

Regardless of how I, or many other individual people, feel about his sex outside marriage, it is well known that the American public generally frowns on it and judges the person that indulges in it, for myriad reasons. That counts now in political races like it never used to. It was not reported. It was rumored, maybe even hinted at, but never reported openly.

The tabloid culture that is taking over our political reporting, and other reporting in general, is awful. Is that really what the public is crying out for? It seems to be, given the ratings generated by this crap v. issue based political reporting.

/rant off.

You're probably right, but I'm hoping that there are enough sane liberals like me out there who will push the Dems to purge the looney lefties from their ranks. I'm not optimistic however. The Dems excel at shooting themselves in the foot, they've made an art form of it.

Hopefully when Obama loses the election the far left will be thrown under the bus. If in 2012, the Dems try to force another Obama on us, then I'm through with them for good.

I think that will take a Carter-like defeat. I don't think McCain can pull that off. I think he will win, but not by the big margin needed for DNC soul searching/blame storming.

Thank god for the alternative media. You may recall, also, that The Drudge Report broke the Clinton/Lewinsky mess based on information that Jonathan Alter was sitting on.

Hillary wouldn't have been able to stand the kind of abuse Bush has gotten. She would have been bitching and moaning about it from day one and IMO would have ended up a homicidal maniac!

She couldn't tolerate criticism when she Bill was in office. She whined like a stuck sow when most of the MSM was shilling for Obama during the primaries.
She can dish it out in buckets but can't so much as a drop going her way w/o paranoid fury.

That's why I said "possible." To be honest, I do recall her bitching, moaning, and whining about the negative news coverage she got before she bailed on the primary.

It's going to be interesting to see what she does in Denver. She hasn't released her delegates, yet, and if Obama's suggestion that the delegates in MI and FL get full votes take root, she'd have more pledged delegates than he would. You can bet that she's been working the superdelegates behind the scenes.

They either retired, or switched to the GOP. Think Zell Miller and Ronald Reagan.

Truman wouldn't be able to run for dogcatcher as a Democrat -- the party simply wouldn't support him. Same with JFK, who was entirely too "jingoistic" and "hawkish" for the current party's leadership.

When you stop to consider that the current party's leadership includes JFK's brother Ted, you really have to wonder about how much the party has decayed.

Last summer on vacation i saw a movie on TV called "Double Jeopardy" starring Ashley Judd and Bruce Greenwood and Tommy Lee Jones. Greenwood plays a sleazy lawyer who fakes his own death and pins it on his wife. I was struck by the amazing resemblance that Greenwood bears to Edwards, even down to the hair and accent and while I already loathed Edwards, his awfulness was captured perfectly in this portrayal. No murders in real life, I hope, but I nominate Greenwood to play the role of Edwards in the made for tv movie.

Edwards ex-mistress rules out paternity test

Aug 9, 6:58 PM (ET)

WASHINGTON (AP) - The ex-mistress of former presidential candidate John Edwards says she will not participate in DNA testing to establish the paternity of her daughter.

Rielle Hunter's lawyer, Robert Gordon, says his client is a private individual who wishes to maintain the privacy of herself and her daughter.

In a statement, Gordon says that Hunter is ruling out any kind of testing that could establish who the daughter's father is.

On Friday, Edwards admitted to having an extramarital affair with Hunter in 2006 but denied that he was the father of Hunter's five-month-old daughter. Edwards said he will take a paternity test to prove he is not the father.

Wow.

How did they plan on handling this if they had made it to the White House ? They HAD to talk about it with a good 50/50 chance that over 4 years the story might come out. They knew full well what the Clintons' actions caused in terms of dividing the country. The only semi comforting thing is that with the wife knowing early on most of the leverage for a black mail attempt went out the window but still - somewhere at some point in time these low life manipulative SOB's HAD to have sat down and talked this out while at least 1/2 of the country was wringing out their handkerchiefs over them ! To me, this is the worst !

I'm sure she would be breaking whatever contract she signed to keep her mouth shut if she gets a paternity test showing Edwards is the father. Eventually a book publisher will offer her more than Edwards can pay and we'll finally know what we already know.

ABC had no choice but to go ahead with the story ASAP. They got pummeled by the National Enquirer. Say what you will about the National Enquirer, they get their stories by following tips and actually sending reporters to see what people are doing. The MSM gets most of their news from press conferences and press releases, repeating what they are told with little or no investigation.

Too bad the National Enquirer only does stories about who is screwing who physically, not politically.

I wish Obama had chosen him for his running mate. Obama would have thrown him under the bus faster than he threw his "typical white person" grandmother.
