We Got Mail (From Al Jazeera)

Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 6:37:51 pm PDT

I just got an email from someone at Al Jazeera English, asking if I’d be interested in appearing on their “political news of the week” to comment on US politics.

I’m a producer at Al Jazeera English Television and I’m looking for interesting political commentators to appear on our news programs. Would you be interested in doing some brief interviews with us on the political news of the week?

I’ll post my answer in public.

No.

And here’s one reason (out of many): Video: Al Jazeera Throws Party for Child Killer.

It’s sad and disturbing to see Americans shilling for these terrorist enablers. But I guess the Muslim Brotherhood’s money soothes all pangs of conscience, for some people.

UPDATE at 8/9/08 6:47:46 pm:

Based on the referrer information, this JihadTV quisling is apparently going through the bloggers listed here: 100 Of The Most Popular Political Websites On The Net - Right Wing News.

I hope I’m not going to see any of these bloggers on Al Jazeera English, but if I do I’ll be sure to post about it.

Good for you, Charles. The more people take a principled stand and refuse to appear on AJ, the more they might understand.

Are you reading this, Al Jazeera? Your company threw a birthday party for man who is only famous for crushing the skull of a 5 year old girl. Just after he killed her dad in front of her.

No political cause in the world justifies that kind of bestial behavior, just as no news agenda justifies celebrating it.

Hang your heads in collective shame.

16 Distant Thunder ...

If the segment was live, Charles could do that. But if the segments were taped (as the invitation suggests), there is no way for Charles to control the content.

21 troonbop  Sat, Aug 9, 2008 6:47:56pm

Best respect to you, Charles. In Canada, our cursed public broadcaster CBC, has turned into a farm team for those pissants. Two prominent - in their terms - staffers have accepted positions there; nice to know my tax dollars helped groom those bastards for their new positions to spread anti-western propaganda. Of course, that's pretty much what they were doing at the CBC.

29 Idle Drifter  Sat, Aug 9, 2008 6:51:53pm

Off Topic. Man I tell you, I go on vacation for less than a week without my cell phone, TV, and the Internet and there's War in Georgia, A Chinese national stabs two Americans killing one before leaping to his death, some wacko is caught plotting an attack on Sen. Obama, and Michael Moore opens his mouth not to insert another hot dog.

On Topic. Is there any chance Al Jazeera might simply dub Charles's comments had he decided to them up on the offer?

re: #2 Killgore Trout

Hitler invites you to tea. Accept or decline?

Speaking of Hitler, if any of you have not seen the movie "Downfall", by all means rent it and watch it (It's in German with English subtitles). It's about the last 10 days of his life, and it shows how deluded he was when it was obvious the Nazis had lost.
The actor who played Hitler is outstanding, but the actor who played Goebbels is really creepy looking.

59 NomadOfNorad  Sat, Aug 9, 2008 7:00:02pm

Good decision, Charles. They probably would pull some sort of shenanigans on you, such as monkeying with the footage to make you say something you didn't really say.

On a different note... I had been gone for awhile from here... got sidetracked off onto other sunny rocks in cyberspace... and for some while before that, I couldn't get the - + thingies to come up on the main page, and so couldn't click on them. I could get them when I loaded an individual thread, though.

Now, they appear again on the main page, but every time I click one of them, the whole page loads again, as if I'd clicked on the LGF logo at the top, instead of upticking the number like I'd expected. After that, though, I can click on the + and - buttons of the various threads with impunity.

Closer scrutiny reveals that when I mouse over the + or - button, it appears to link to [Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...] (note the # at the end). I have LGF bookmarked without the # at the end, but after clicking on the + or - the first time (and the page loads anew), I now have # at the end of it. This is with FireFox 3, on Windoze XP Pro.

BTW, what became of the rotating title?

60 jaunte  Sat, Aug 9, 2008 7:02:55pm

Wise decision not to allow your image and voice to be used as their editors see fit.
Meanwhile, cable consumers have been voting, and Al Jazeera English is still only seen in four cities in the U.S. (Toledo OH, Burlington VT, Houston TX, Washington DC).

62 Pastorius  Sat, Aug 9, 2008 7:03:00pm

That's a great strategy for Al Jazeera, because they know they can make most bloggers look really stupid, since most bloggers are relatively unaware of how television works.

So, if Al Jazeera can recruit four or five of these Conservative American bloggers to appear on their network news, man are we going to look stupid.

Mouths hanging open, getting inapporpriately angry, bad lighting, getting cut off and flustered, etc.

When Bill O'Reilly interviewed Michael Moore in 04, one of the reasons Michael was against the war was because he thought our "kids" were being used in the war. He kept saying "We need our kids to come home, our kids, Bill, our kids" or something similar.

Most everyone reading this blog knows the hypocrisy of Mike, but if he appears on that network after that network celebrated a child killer, this could be some pretty good ammo against that chunk of poo.

They could edit it so that it would come across that Charles is in agreement.

They could, although they have aired some Americans and Israelis unedited. Al Jazeera is a weird entity. It is at once pro-jihad yet sometimes airs anti-jihad stuff unedited and uncut. It wants to be "street-friendly" (i.e. pro-Palestinian and pro-jihad in a lot of respects), anti-establishment (the establishment in Al Jazeera's case being "secular" Arab leaders like Mubarek), yet a professional news organization in a Western sense to some degree with some pretense of objectivity, while being a business. It really is a very weird entity.

It would be hard to predict how they would present an American blogger critical of Islamism, but they have had a lot of Islamist-critical people on who they did not edit or censure. On general moral grounds, considering their history and influence, as well as the uncertainty of how they might manipulate or edit, it makes sense to ignore such an invitation. Still, it would be cool to see Charles giving them hell.

I don't think they were ever an ally, per se. More of a co-deterrent.

I don't think we will let that happen. I really don't. There is nothing in GWB's history to suggest he will step aside and let Georgia "be eaten". This would be a foreign policy disaster far beyond this conflict. America will not back her allies?

One of the pics I referred to was particularly terrible. I won't post a link to it but it was an older lady, perhaps late 50's? who was burned and bleeding in a heap of twisted metal outside a burning building. It really almost looked like she was blown out of her apartment building. The Red Army was prepared for this attack before the so-called Ossetia militiamen began attacking Georgians outside of their "enclave" how else do you explain their ability to send a Brigade sized force into the region on such short notice? We are talking about probably 150+ armored vehicles. it ain't like you just walk out to the garage and turn the key on one of those things!

Modern War is about logisitics. The winning side has to have the right amount of force (read men and machines) in the right place at the right time. A little luck helps too. I was surprised that the Georgians didn't bomb/block the pass into the country. apparently the entire Russian offensive has to move through a single tunnel? Putin will have to raise hell in a hurry and count on the Georgians collapsing either militarily or their willpower. He can't sustain a large offensive like that.

Apparently much is made of the fact that the Chinese invented movable type prior to Gutenberg. There are 2 answers to this. one it is irrelevant, what did you do with it? Second, the stylus is in fact a form of substitutional type face. And that was 3,000 years prior. Welcome to competition.

Charles or others with a moral spine, given air time, would serve only to lend them credibility and that is not a good thing.

I don't know from where they derive their credibility. Al Jazeera to me seems to me to a kind of pan-Muslim (with an Arab bias, not surprisingly) tabloid. It's not just about jihadi sympathies of the people who run the show; they also are knowingly giving the people what they want, which is even more disturbing. Yet they sometimes do show the other side unedited. Also, on the audience side, I am not sure the Muslim world is as monolithic as it is sometimes made out to be. While Islam has not had any reformation and it is a dead-end of violence and apocalyptic thinking as presently configured, there are many Muslims who realize the absurdity of Islam. They keep to it out of tradition, but perhaps they could be reached.

I have met some Arabs who understand that the Palestinian problem is largely an Arab creation used as a weapon against Israel. They may not be pro-Israeli, but they know that there is a lot rotten about the Arab world and that Israel is not the main problem with the Arab world.

There may not be any hope in changing the Islamic world, but there are individuals who can be reached. They are not all automotons. No question. Our attempts to fight wars with extreme measures to not harm civilians is an aberation (historically speaking) In the history of men there were no such things as civillians. there was simply us, and them. Whoever won did with the leftover "thems" as they pleased, usually put them to work as slaves of one sort or another. For most of time the common folk were a feature of the landscape. You know, a guy comes in to a new town, kills off the warriors, lets the rest live so they can make money for him as long as they behave. If they fought too hard he might be pissed and kill everyone, but that is inconvienent because then he has to import a new workforce to til the land and make the money for him. It's sort of like taking over the lease on a furnished apartment. You might want to change the sheets, or maybe not.

Sorry. I never went looking around for other political blogs particularly. I came here because Rush Limbaugh mentioned it positively a few times, and then I simply stuck with LGF. That was years after 9/11, and I had never paid any attention to political blogs before coming to LGF.

Ergo, I'd never heard of USS Clueless. I don't think I'd have expected someone to name his blog "USS Clueless," rather, I'd have expected a name like "USS Clued-In" or something. Calling something "USS Clueless" sounded to me in the same vein as someone calling the Jehovahs Witness the "Jehovah's Witless."

Since the guy actually did use that as the actual name of his site, though. I guess that means he was calling the whole country the USS Clueless, with himself as the one and only crewmember who HAS a clue...

sojerofgod is about right. Civilians weren't the point of ancient warfare; they got in the way, most often. At the end of it, what happened to 'em depended on how the conqueror felt that day.

When cities were involved in an existential conflict like Carthage-Rome or, begging our Jewish readers' pardon, Babylon-Judea; that was a whole 'nother thing. The civilians of those nations actually cared who was going to be their lord-n-master next.

The 3,000 years I referred to, was 3,000 prior to the Chinese 'invention ' of movable type. A far older date. Adopted writing appears to have been independently invented on 4, some say 5, occasions. These cultures had little or no contact with each other, But it was culturally adopted instantly by all cultures that were introduced, so it didn't need to be invented often. Sort of like speaking, pottery, metallurgy, fermentation, etc. Sometimes a good idea is just a good idea. Chinese also claim to have invented paper. This is sort of a 'so what?'. Paper is an inferior printing medium whose value is that it was cheap. Clay, metal, parchment were far better mediums, as was the Euro-Egyptian medium of papyrus.

We all contribute involuntarily, as we have so many Chinese products to buy, as they are no longer made here. Every type of product, just about, that I grew up buying , was made in the U.S.A.....now? They have taken millions of jobs, companies here are out of business, and we get shoddy products that cause illnesses, whatever...and no one seems to be even trying to stop this. And the mercury poisoning? The shoddy, dangerous children's' toys, etc.?

I would love to see a President McCain stop this stupidity, and give US manufacturers carte blanche to make the things here. They will be safe, well-made, and above all, made here, thus making jobs, and helping the economy.

Even though we are senior citizens on a limited budget, we try to buy American, but it is not easy.

Does anyone know which administration started this?

If we were able to make it here? We would stop their monstrous growth. The assholes who gave them the Olympics should be out in irons in the village square.

I am furious. I grew up during WWII, but still had all my clothes, etc., toys, whatever my parents zt"l and family bought, in an era with rationing, was made here, while plants were also producing weaponry.

I think we helped feed the monster that is China, a gulag under a commie regime. It is like feeding a serpent.

Can anyone even guess how much money the Chinese are making out of the Olympics? And notice how Google, that 'forgets' American holidays, has managed to have a new logo every day since the Olympics started.

I have not watched a nano second, nor will I.

And then there is the failure of Chinese products. Time will tell. The tech transfer to an enemy nation is unprecedented tho.

Good on you Charles! This is the right thing to do and also shows why you have the moral authority to criticize the MSM and media whores like Buchanan.

What would Reagan do? Maybe you could have turned it into a "tear down this wall" moment. Get inside the enemy's OODA loop.

I think Reagan would have given them the cold shoulder.

I agree, but the horse is out of the barn, and it will be very hard to get him back.

I forgot to mention that we will soon be flooded with Chinese-made generics, and that scares me more than I can say..

Right now Israel's Teva is the world's biggest manufacturer of generics.

Charles, actually, I think you should do it. See what Dr. Kedar did there

Good work, I support your stance

281 Dogness  Sat, Aug 9, 2008 10:39:30pm

CJ, I can understand your position. On the other, I wonder what would happen if you went on there and replied to your first question by asking "Hey, isn't this the network that threw a party for a convicted terrorists? What am I doing here?" Then promptly got up and left.

re: #102 bellamags

When Bill O'Reilly interviewed Michael Moore in 04, one of the reasons Michael was against the war was because he thought our "kids" were being used in the war. He kept saying "We need our kids to come home, our kids, Bill, our kids" or something similar.

Most everyone reading this blog knows the hypocrisy of Mike, but if he appears on that network after that network celebrated a child killer, this could be some pretty good ammo against that chunk of poo.

It's just a Jewish child. I don't think that counts, does it?

/sarc of course

Charles, I'm glad you turned them down. My first, gut response is that sometimes you just have to completely condemn evil by refusing to have anything to do with it at all, for any reason. Having said that, I am thinking of Dr. Wafa Sultan, who gave a powerful debate there against the wacky Muslim imam, and Dr. Kedary, whom Naftali mentions (though I have not seen that interview). I wonder if, in select cases, it would be an appropriate thing to do.

Thanks for the post, Charles. And please post anyone that accepts.

I hate the thought of "boycotting" anything, even a "news" (news? LOL) outlet, but everyone knows that these folks lie, and no blogger that gives an interview will get a fair shake. Their comments will be taken out of context and formed like play-doh into whatever shape they want.

I'm an Israeli and I have a few words to say in defence of al-Jazeera. This is not a recommendation to appear on their network, even if there is a legitimate invitation.

Leaving aside their coverage of our conflict, they provide the best insight into what's happening in the Far East, stuff you don't get anywhere else. Two examples. Life in Beijing for auslanders, those from the rural areas, is hell on earth. They are a quarter of the population. For them it's like pages out of Dickens' England or Hugo's Les Miserables. They have no status and their kids are not entitled to go to schools or get medical care. Al-Jazeera had an in-depth feature on that. The other item that caught my eye concerned tribes who fought in the Vietnam War with the Americans and are still being persecuted in Laos. They got one of their correspondents into the jungle there and what a sad tale.

Their panel discussions sometimes aren't bad. There is a foul-mouthed, anti-American, anti-Semitic Arab journalist based on London and when he goes on the BBC or CNN he is allowed to pontificate without interruption or challenge. I've seen this over and over again. Al-Jazeera put him on with an American general and the general ripped him into little pieces over Iraq. I couldn't believe my eyes.

They are pretty slanted against Israel but during the Lebanon War they were actually fairer than the BBC or CNN. That's not saying much. And they do have a lot of scumbags on there like the Canadian Avi Lewis so there's only so much you can watch. But I will defend their Far East coverage.

Thank you, Charles.

"I’m a producer at Al Jazeera English Television and I’m looking for interesting political commentators to appear on our news programs."

No doubt, Charles is an interesting political commentator, but I have to wonder if Al Jazeera really knew who Charles was and what sort of remarks appear at LGF.

Or perhaps they did know, and wanted to get Charles on their program, under misleading editing. Or they just wanted his home phone number, to pass along to their troublemaking friends. Ever heard of reverse phone directory?

292 Drained Brain  Sun, Aug 10, 2008 12:58:07pm

David Frum apparently received a similar invitation, Charles, in case you weren't aware, with an amusing twist after he refused:

A few minutes later I received an unintended reply. The producer had meant to forward my message to her associates - but the forward button is so often hard to distinguish from the reply button!

To: David Frum
Subject: David Frum: absolute bastard!
I wrote back to thank the producer for her very illuminating reply - I could not have asked for a more emphatic confirmation of my suspicions of the production's actual intentions.

293 aquamari  Mon, Aug 11, 2008 5:28:14am

Charles, I think that you should appear. It is an opportunity to direct speak directly to the types of people who don't know better than to watch Al Jihad.

You would go on the air, and tell them that all people who have half an ounce of decency find what is said and done on Al Jazeera dispicable. It's a message that they need to hear, and I can't think of anyone better to deliver.

294 Flavia  Mon, Aug 11, 2008 7:19:30am

My first thought was "Hey, why the heck NOT go over & tell them exactly what you think of them?" My next thought, however, is "They will edit you like crazy!" But my 3rd thought is "How could they edit: "Drop dead you terrorist sympathizers!"?" I suppose there is stronger language you could use - if you weren't the gentleman & scholar we all know you to be.
