The thing about POTUS is he doesn't need to be.
The comm suite on Air Force One put him in touch like he was in the Sit Room.

Being held hostage in DC by a crises is a Rabbit Bait move.

Reporters are such dweebs. The lede is that Bush was jumping on Putin's ass about Georgia but the next paragraph is about how Rudd isn't much of a sports fan.

Why would anyone in their right mind give a shit about sporting events while some jackass has lit the match to set the world on fire again?

I considered a journo major for two whole weeks. I took the intro course 101 in 1977. The perfesser, a 30 something blonde associate spent that two weeks gushing about Marshall Mcluhan (sp?) and his new gig about "The media is the message" I just didn't get it. What does this mean? I thought, So I walked down after class and asked her. If the Media is the message, I said, then what does "Television" mean? She gulped and gasped, and couldn't answer the question. Thought I was impertinent for asking to boot.

I dropped the course.

They didnt like the fact I voted for Ronald Reagan. I changed my major after that first semester.

When I first stepped into grad school at the Mizzou J School, the prof asked me my undergrad major. I told her, and she said "Oh, that's the Dead White European Male major."

I was pretty sure then that I was in the wrong spot, but I gave journalism a year. When I learned very little about the craft of research and writing, and more than I cared to know about dependency theory, I dropped out with an A average.

re: #89 pat

Mandy, it is reported in the British media that he actually gave one of the girls a slap on the butt.

Judging from the picture, it was with the girl's full consent, and her partner was there and watching his every move. Since they were far closer than his Secret Service escort, they could have decked him big time if he'd done something Bubba would do.

Hmm, let's compare...

Bill Clinton let this one give him a hummer in the Oval Office while discussing sensitive national security matters.

Edwards bootied this one while his wife was suffering from cancer, and possibly fathered her child.

George W might or might not have slapped one of these ladies on the butt.

I got pushed into the journalism idea from a high school English teacher. He told me I was one of the best writers he ever saw. Fat lot of good that did me over the years

I went through many different "what do you want to be when you grow up?" phases, and when I saw the movie of "The Killing Fields," I wanted to be an investigative journalist. I didn't, of course, realize at the time that Schanberg wasn't so great and that Dith Pran was the real hero. It just seemed that being on the ground, covering the facts, would be an awesome job.

And it would, if that's what the media did anymore. :)

I love my current job, and I'm glad I had that year of graduate school to see how the sausage is made. It helped me understand the media better than I could have otherwise.

...Georgia is in crisis, yet the Obama campaign has offered nothing more than cheap and petty political attacks that are echoed only by the Kremlin. The reaction of the Obama campaign to this crisis, so at odds with our democratic allies and yet so bizarrely in sync with Moscow, doesn't merely raise questions about Senator Obama's judgment--it answers them.[Emphasis MajorP]

This is a fantastic quote, and is exactly the sort of thing which McCain's campaign needs to keep saying. Not only is it the right tone, it is the right topic.

reporters used to be route-runners and copy-boys who moved up. They had wit, street smarts and common sense to guide them. Once the corporate mindset took over the papers they needed a way to judge the credentials of new applicants. Thus was born the journalism schools. reporters gave way to 'journalists' who have no original thoughts, have no common sense and run with a herd mentality they learned in school. all they know how to do now is dig through the garbage of people who actually do something with their lives.

No, as much as I admire human female anatomy (especially the back end of it), I happen to feel it's entirely pedestrian and boorish to design a uniform that does nothing less than allow most of the ass to hang out.

Then again if it was Bill Clinton, he'd be using both hands to grab her by the ears...

I've got lots of disagreements with Bush on policy, but I have to say that as "just a guy", he seems to enjoy himself.

I mean, consider his "road rash" - got doing what? RIDING THE OLYMPIC MOUNTAIN BIKE COURSE! Not something you'd ever see Bubba doing, as was previously mentioned.

You remember that Secret Service guy who was assigned to Regan post-presidency, because he knew horses? He wrote a book about it an all? I figure there's some similar guy in the current Service who was chosen to be Bush's "Mountain Bike Guy" because he did mountain biking as a hobby. So, Bush goes to China, does his expected/required speech thing (after lots of heated arguments with speech writers, no doubt), and then...

...well, do we have any evidence that GW has ever been to the Olympics before? Ever? If I were President, and went to the Olympics, I'd do the same as he apparently did:

GW: "Done with that damn speech and press conference. As far as I'm concerned, "work" is over for the day. Hey! I see here that Mountain Biking is an Olympic event! Think I could check out the course?"

FLUNKY: "Of course, sir - you are the President. For at least the next 48 hours, you can do pretty much whatever you want. Let me make a call and make arrangements..."

SECRET SERVICE MOUNTAIN BIKE GUY: *sigh* Oh, crap. Here we go again...

Bush and Mountain Bike Guy barrel down the course (after Bush promises to "go slow" to the rest of the nervous Secret Service team), and he wipes out half way down. Mountain Bike Guy leaps off his bike, and rushes to Bush's side.

"Are you alright, Sir?"

Bush gets up and dusts himself off. "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. Let's really crank it the rest of the way!"

Mountain Bike Guy goes back to his bike and says, "Sir, I think you should be more careful..."

Bush looks over his shoulder, grins, and says, "Pussy."

Reaching the bottom without further incident, Bush wipes the sweat of his brow and says to Mountain Bike Guy "That was fun! What say we check out the Womens Volleyball section next?"

Mountain Bike Guy grins in relief that Bush doesn't want to do the run again, shakes his head and says, "Yes, sir, whatever you like."

I mean, that's what I'D do if I were President and had a free trip to the Summer Olympics...

There's no question in my mind -- the beer, the ballons and the bunting all start with "B" for some cosmic reason. -- Words that star with B and remind him of the Republican party. The Real Frank Zappa Book. Page 238
