Interesting -- I had to log in again to post on this thread (or at least, the username and pw text boxes were at the bottom, rather than the normal comment box)... Perhaps a function of it being an open registration thread...

Welcome hatchlings, be sure to clean up your own shells, read Nekama's troll hammer, and behave yourselves.

Oh, and you must serve the older Lizards a sandwich and their alcoholic BEvERages of choice.

Paddles with the little ball on the end of a rather large rubber band would be just perfect - that way if they get booted for being a troll, they would still be able to entertain themselves for hours on end.

The official Georgian government account of major developments for August 10:

05:45 - A Russian jet entered Georgian airspace from Dagestan and dropped three bombs on a Tbilisi airplane factory.

08:45 - Ten Russian jets attacked Upper Abkhazia, one of which was downed by Georgian Government troops.
09:00 - The Government of Georgia reported 45 soldiers and 47 civilians had been killed.
15:00 - Russian airplanes bombed the village of Knolevi in the northern Kareli district.
15:10 – Russian troops and Abkhaz separatists launched a ground attack on upper Kodori Gorge.
16:10 - Russian aircraft bombed the only remaining bridge on the highway linking east and west Georgia, causing a fire on the bridge. The fire has been put out, and traffic restored.
16:05 - Gori was bombed by Russian planes.
17:30 - Georgia announced a ceasefire and said troops had been withdrawn from the conflict zone.
19:05 - Russian aircraft dropped a bomb on Tbilisi Civil Airport.
19:10 - TbilAviaMsheni aviation factory was bombed by Russian warplanes again.

By noon of 10 August there were 20-25,000 IDPs from the regions of Tskhinvali and Gori, as a result of Russian attacks. The number of IDPs is growing quickly.

Six thousand Russian troops entered Georgia through Roki tunnel overnight; as well as 90 tanks; 150 Armored Personnel Carriers and 250 artillery gunships.
Four thousand Russian troops landed at Ochamchire port in Abkhazia, from the Black Sea port of Sevastopol.

A snip from the draft of the 2008 Democratic Platform

A World without Nuclear Weapons.

America will seek a world with no nuclear weapons and take concrete actions to move in this direction. We face growing threats of terrorists acquiring nuclear weapons or the means to make them with more countries seeking nuclear weapons, unsecured nuclear materials in many countries, and of the potential spread of nuclear technologies. As George Shultz, Bill Perry, Henry Kissinger and Sam Nunn have warned, current measures are not adequate to address these dangers. We will maintain a strong and reliable deterrent as long as nuclear weapons exist, but America will be safer in a world that is reducing reliance on nuclear weapons and ultimately eliminates all of them. We will make the goal of eliminating nuclear weapons worldwide a central element of U.S. nuclear weapons policy.

I have had the worst timing for the longest freakin' time on registration, I thought Charles had to be watching for when I went to take a leak to open it up. I almost took that leak when I saw registration open and was typing so fast I put in a hybrid email that goes nowhere. I realized the mistake when the confirming email didn't come back and, sputtering and swearing, dove back in for another go at it. I thought for sure the door would come crashing down on my back halfway through, but alas, I have made it in time.

Anyway, I have toweled off and am really glad to be here.

This particular passage from their platform is meaningless boiler plate filler to placate the Kumbaya crowd in the fold. Then again its all meaningless boiler plate material for one special interest group or another.

Anyone can write a hundred pages of empty headed feel-good nonsense. I'd rather see the Dems try to boil down their reason for existence in one paragraph. If the Dems had to write a mission statement, it would be pure gobbleygook. They have no mission other than to get elected.

re: #136 DistantThunder

The emerging narrative, echoing across editorial pages and on television news programs in the US, portrays Georgia as an embattled, pro-Western country struggling to secure its borders against a belligerent Russia. Since coming to power in a bloodless revolution in late 2003, Saakashvili has certainly steered a clear course toward the West. The EU flag now flies alongside the Georgian one on major government buildings (even though Georgia is a long way from ever becoming a member of the EU). The Saakashvili government seeks Georgian membership in NATO, an aspiration strongly supported by the administration of George W. Bush. Oddly, before the conflict erupted on its own soil Georgia was the third-largest troop contributor in Iraq, a result of Saakashvili's desire to show absolute commitment to the US and, in the process, gain needed military training and equipment for the small Georgian Army. Russia must be condemned for its unsanctioned intervention. But the war began as an ill-considered move by Georgia to retake South Ossetia by force. Saakashvili's larger goal was to lead his country into war as a form of calculated self-sacrifice, hoping that Russia's predictable overreaction would convince the West of exactly the narrative that many commentators have now taken up.

Six thousand Russian troops entered Georgia through Roki tunnel overnight; as well as 90 tanks; 150 Armored Personnel Carriers and 250 artillery gunships.

Someone needs to blow that tunnel. At this point Russia has indicatedthey never intended to defend any Ossetians, they used it as a pretext for eradicating Georgia. Blow the tunnel, let them starve in Georgia. They can't keep up the logistics forever. They can fight yet another insurgency, since the Soviets are so good at it. Somebody better get off their ass and do something to help Georgia. This is disgraceful. Let me take 30 days of leave and I'll go fight.

Drat. I missed open registration again. How will I ever get an account?

re: #102 Mich-again

A snip from the draft of the 2008 Democratic Platform:

I want a world without nuklar wehpons. I wouldn't mind getting a pony and a ducky either. Or a billion dollars. Or my own city in space.

Georgians want to know why

As a Russian jet bombed fields around his village, Djimali Avago, a Georgian farmer, asked me: “Why won’t America and Nato help us? If they won’t help us now, why did we help them in Iraq?” A similar sense of betrayal coursed through the conversations of many Georgians here yesterday as their troops retreated under shellfire and the Russian Army pressed forward to take full control of South Ossetia.

We supported Kosovo independence, a Muslim state by the way. Georgia is a democracy. Looking for answers here.

266 Mich-again  Sun, Aug 10, 2008 6:31:47pm

re: #242 David IV of Georgia

More nonsense from their platform..

End the Production of Fissile Material

We will negotiate a verifiable global ban on the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons. We will work to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons technology so that countries cannot build–or come to the brink of building–a weapons program under the guise of developing peaceful nuclear power. We will seek to double the International Atomic Energy Agency’s budget, support the creation of an IAEA-controlled nuclear fuel bank to guarantee fuel supply to countries that do not build enrichment facilities, and work to strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Two times Zero = Zero.

Welcome to all the new Hatchlings!

re: #84 Josephine

We live quite a ways away in Toronto but the two blasts from the explosion rattled our windows and woke us up.

I live a few major intersections away from the scene of the explosions, my parents said that it woke them up but they thought it was just some strange thunder or something and they went back to sleep.

Over 12,000 evacuated from the area, and they are apparently holed up in York University.

Did anybody catch Bob Costas interviewing President Bush about 20 minutes ago at the Olympics?
He asked him how he was recieved by the U.S olympic team.
What? He is the president.
Then he informed the President of the United States, "We only have a minute."
But wait! Costas droned on & on about Geo -political stuff like, "Things are going so well for China now, and the U.S has such problems."
Finally Bush said, "I really have to go" & Costas replied, "Your dismissed"
I always thought that Costas was a little shit & then he proves it.

re: #265 Mel Lono

It's pretty horrible for the Georgians, but it's pretty obvious why the US and NATO are not getting involved in the situation - the Cold War may be over, but that still doesn't give us the green light for war with the Russians.

Call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure we're not going to risk Global Thermonuclear War over South Ossetia. Just a hunch.

But it's definitely a shame that we can't do more than we're already doing to help Georgia on this. They have indeed been very staunch allies in Iraq and anyone with half a brain can see that they are in the right on this.

I'm still at a loss to understand exactly what Russia's point is to all of this. Are they trying to help the breakaway republics in Georgia? Isn't that a little... I don't know... hypocritical considering their reaction to potential breakaways in Chechnya and Dagestan?

Huh?

If you know it how is it possible those who's job it is to know - don't know?

Georgia has a military less than the size of Ft Bragg. it is possible they don't have a military intel apparatus in place, or one that is robust enough to make such determinations. Right now they are trying to build an effective combined arms force. Things like Intel and psyop are important, but not as important as fielding infantrymen and tanks.

FoxNews is reporting that Russia indicated that it is trying to impliment a regime change in Georgia. Russia denies that is what they meant but haven't made any decent clarification.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had told U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Sunday morning "that a democratically elected president of Georgia — and I quote — must go."
...
"Is your government's objective regime change in Georgia, the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Georgia?" Khalilzad said.
...
"I'd like to say straightaway that regime change is an American expression," Churkin said.

re: #68 GNIDAthe#seCond

Wow. Quite a video. Surprised to see a firefighter died though. The dangers and tactics of fighting a fire at a propane facility are well known. Once a tank is burning you let it burn off through a flare. You never try to put it out.

And since you are not supposed to put it out there is no reason to be there unless you are trying to keep other tanks from catching fire. But long before a tank reaches a temperature where it would catch fire the pressure rises to a sufficient level to open a release valve and you get a new flare on a new tank. This releases a controlled amount of propane to burn off in a controlled manner.

To get an explosion like that you had to have a mechanical failure of a pressure relief valve. What you saw on the video looks like a BLEVE - boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion. These things should never happen in the developed world with all the building codes and insurance requirements.

Whether it has anything to do with the missing East Indian employee I don't know, but something went seriously wrong with the way the equipment at the facility responded to the heat and fire.

re: #289 rlevitin

We thought it was thunder, too. We were out of town this afternoon and someone (a non-Torontonian) told us about it. (We were listening to The Police on CD in the car, not the radio!)

My husband used to work not from from the scene of the explosions, so he's familiar with the area.

I saw in the online Toronto Star that some people were being allowed to go home. I'm sure that's not the case for those whose homes were damaged.

It's lucky it wasn't worse. (The Halifax Explosion comes to mind, since my late mother-in-law's family lived in Halifax at the time.)

Russia going to war in Georgia should be a wake-up call to the USA about NATO. We had floated the idea of bringing Georgia into NATO and had that happened we would right now be looking at joining in the war against Russia to defend Georgia. And you have to wonder if Germany, England, France, Turkey, Greece, Italy and the other NATO allies would actually do a thing about it when their membership called for them to actually send soldiers to war.

This is Putin telling the West that NATO is a joke.

No I was not doing that. I just remeber Samuel L Jackson delivering the line.
He then did a hilarious video on that theme.

There was a bit of protest that Saakashvili's election in January was full of fraud but, I bet the allegations were backed by Putin.

That doesn't give a foreign power the green light to bomb or invade, does it? (It's a rhetorical question. That is not is what you sad.)

re: #378 Mich-again

GMTA. I was thinking that is one possible way to respond to Russia. Iran is their favorite little brother in the region.

I don't think it's a response. Seems to have been planned in advance of Putin's play.

Meanwhile, the Arabic news agency Moheet reported at the end of July that an unnamed American destroyer, accompanied by two Israeli naval vessels traveled through the Suez Canal from the Mediterranean. A week earlier, a US nuclear submarine accompanied by a destroyer and a supply ship moved into the Mediterranean, according to Moheet. Currently there are two US naval battle groups operating in the Gulf: one is an aircraft carrier group, led by the USS Abraham Lincoln, which carries some 65 fighter aircraft. The other group is headed by the USS Peleliu which maintains a variety of planes and strike helicopters. The ship movements coincide with the latest downturn in relations between Washington and Teheran. Kuwait, like other Arab countries in the Gulf, fears it will be caught in the middle should the US decide to launch an air strike against Iran if negotiations fail. The Kuwaitis are finalizing details of their security, humanitarian and vital services, the newspaper reported.

I have to believe that the MSM will put aside any issues it has with Obama's lack of qualifications when we get closer to the election.

I recently saw an MSNBC commercial about its election coverage and thought it was an Obama ad until the very end.

In the end, they will do whatever is necessary to help their man win.

Agreed. They won't laugh at him six weeks from now, if he's still in the running (and given McCain's relative silence -- perhaps from a lack of funding -- he'll still be in the running).

re: #339 Mel Lono

I don't have any classified information since I am in a training status right now. And obviously wouldn't post any on the internet as I value my job and freedom, so, pretty much everything I post is based on OSINT and my interpretation based upon what I know about the region and the Russian military. That being said, my opinion is just that. Additionally, I have a number of acquaintances in the special community here that are currently involved, and have been involved in the past in the region which is the former Soviet Union. I also am still in contact with a number of friend in those nation's armies. Guys I have trained with from when I was an infantry LT until now. I met most of my Russkie contacts at the Engineer advanced course last year and we spent a great deal of time talking about their hatred of all things Russian. Oh, and they also disliked the Middle Eastern soldiers as well that were in the course.

So I am very passionate about this, because today it is Georgia, tomorrow it is Ukraine and Lithuania. I am doing my best to take in lots of information and filter it though my knowledge and background filter. Anything I hear that is not classified and of interest I will gladly pass on. Let me re-iterate, I am used to the world standing by and doing nothing, when the USA does nothing, it makes me sick to my stomach. I understand the hefty geo-political considerations, but damn, I thought we had a pair.

re: #432 MandyManners

I have been trying to read up on it quite a bit myself.

The one aspect in the aftermath of the Soviet Empire falling apart, is to see how stories come with so many satellites.

It is amazing.

I know we, and the rest of Europe were very, very concerned about leftover nuclear material in this region, and almost instantly went to work trying to round it up.

It is my impression, the Old Guard there realizes communism was a dead end street, but misses the graft of it all.

In my opinion, this has everything to do with Western Europe, the U.S. & a pipeline that services a massive reserve of energy in the Caspian.

From what I can decipher, it plays a big part of Turkey coming into the E.U. as well.

Mandy, I thought this would interest you. This an email we received today from very good friends that are in St. Petersburg. She is Russian and her husband is American, they spend half of the year in Russia taking care of her elderly mother. Her husband is due to leave Russia in two weeks...needless to say we have been concerned about them. Names have been removed.

Hi ***,

Thank you for your concern. *** thinks he will make it.

Actually you are absolutely right. Everybody here is getting crazy about situation with Georgia, some even call me to say something just to pinch me, I guess because my husband is American. It is very upsetting. It makes me upset and angry. I do not want to call anybody and receive anybody's calls. I get upset and start arguing though myself I am not sure who is right and who is wrong in that region. Historically it is very complicated. We watch news and read Internet all the time. We will never know exact truth. All channels are very antiwestern.

Nope. I tried to log in as Reine.De.Tout, and it didn't work.

Thanks. As for my bona fides, I am USCGA '79. Spoke a bit of Russian doing boardings off the Northwest doing fisheries patrol. The Sovs were very good at hiding what they didn't want you to see. Wish I could have continued studies at DLS Monterey but it didnt happen. Law degree as well but only an amatuer as far as IR goes. Had the perfect quals for a diplomat though/

That sounds like quite a life. A friend of mine did Russian at DLI ans spent some time in Moscow. His Russian is much better than mine, which is passable at best. I definitely know the Russian mindset and they are some devious bastards. When GWB made that comment about looking into Putin's soul or whatever, I wanted to puke. That was the single dumbest thing he ever said. Once KGB, always KGB.

Love,
***

Ain't that the truth. Take a look at ITAR TASS on the english side, then find the matching story on the Russian side and translate. I guess they think nobody speaks Russian outside of Russia. They have a sever case of inferiority complex when it comes to США.

Anybody else have that Cold War feeling running up their leg? Haven't felt it in 20 years, but it came back like riding a bike watching the Russia v. Georgia shootout. I have talked to a lot of the under-30 set and they don't have a clue what I am talking about. For them, it never happened. It's also probably why I can see Marxism all over Obama and his pot-smoking wastrel supporters dig him.

"Duck and cover" comes to mind for some reason. I need to get a lawn chair and sunglasses. Where I live, there would be no way to flee a first strike. Sunscreen is good to 10,000°F right? It does feel a lot like the Cold War again.

I have a place in the city (Nashville) for biz its in an "urban" area of town. Woke up this morning first thing I saw across the street big signs Obambi TN State Headquarters. They must have moved in in the middle of the night. Why would they be spending all the cash here in TN when they have to know they will never take this state. It is gonna be a long summer having to look at those signs when I have to stay in town. Cannot wait to get back to the farm tomorrow...not an Obambi sign for miles there.

Still deciding weather to put my McCain sticker on my truck for fear of it being trashed in this area. First time I ever felt that during an election. The cars in the parking lot of Obambi headquarters across of the street are covered with stickers. One was of a big "O" kinda like the "W" black stickers.

"Ok, if you can spell sand correctly, you get a fresh baked cookie"...she spells it, and gets a cookie.

Then the teachers asks little Billy what he did during recess. "I played in the sandbox with Sandy" says Billy. The teacher asks him to spell box, he does, and gets a cookie.

Then the teacher asks little Mustafa Abdul what he did during recess.

"Well, I tried to play in the sandbox with Billy and Sandy...but they threw rocks at me!"

"Rocks?!?" the teacher asks..."That sounds like blatant racial discrimination!...if you can spell "blatant racial discrimination"...

558 crimeshark  Sun, Aug 10, 2008 8:02:15pm

Here’s a copy of the statement former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards issued today regarding his affair with a woman who worked on his campaign:

”In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and finally got caught conducting myself in a way that was disloyal to my dying wife and family, but consistent with my scummy ambulance chaser background and core beliefs. I realized I was busted, so I 'fessed up and I told my wife that I had met some scrawny blond bitch in a bar and then used her like an inflatable f**k doll. No- really. I screwed the ho in every position I could think of, and greased her everyplace in the frigging hotel. Except on top of the ice machine in the lobby. Got to try that next time. Anyway, since my wife won't talk to me as it is, I figured it was OK to be completely honest in every little, tiny, hot, salacious and depraved detail with my family. Thinking I might still have a shot at VP with that naive black guy, I did not tell the public.

“When a supermarket tabloid nailed me with my pants down, I lied like a rug trying to deny it. But now, even my acknowledging being a dishonest tool is no longer enough. So I won't bother. I was and am ashamed of getting caught in the first place, and I had hoped that it would never become public before the election. I am and have been willing to tell any untruth and go to any length to foist any canard upon the American public. With that up front, believe me when I say I ain't the daddy. So take it or leave it.

“It is as ridiculous to say to the people who believed my bulls**t that I'm sorry, as it is insulting to say to the people stupid enough to trust me that I'm sorry. In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was the silky pony of lore and I started humping anything with a pulse that wasn't on Chemo. If you want to beat me up feel free. Like Elliot Spitzer, I normally have to pony up a few grand for the privilege. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten myself. No- wait... Anyway, I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help see to it that the women I meet likewise are not overly constricted and burdened by clothing.

“I have given a complete interview on this matter and having done so, will have nothing more to say.’‘

The interview Edwards referred to will air tonight on ABC’s “Nightline.’‘

Obambi new headquarters across the street from the farmers market on (of course) Rosa Parks Boulevard (which used to be 8th avenue north) near downtown. the headquarters if taking up half of a small strip mall - the other half is a beer store and a liquor store - go figure.

We helped in Iraq - now help us, beg Georgians

As a Russian jet bombed fields around his village, Djimali Avago, a Georgian farmer, asked me: “Why won’t America and Nato help us? If they won’t help us now, why did we help them in Iraq?”

That's an excellent question.

Gori, normally a bustling city of 50,000 people, is largely deserted after Russian airstrikes at the weekend. Scores of people were abandoning their homes and loading possessions into vehicles or carrying what they could on foot. “There is a lot of panic. Many people have left and I am thinking of joining them. My bags are already packed,” Georgi, a 56-year-old resident of Tirdznisi, said. “We are afraid that the Russians will come here and kill us. People would not go if we had a strong army but they don’t believe in our army any more.

We should be ashamed but there are high ranking administrations in Beijing right now that are too busy taking in all the sights on my dime. This is really pissing me off.

Just my opinion but it seems to me that whenever the price of oil goes up these oil producers (Iran, Russia, Venezuela, etc..) all grow a set. Not a peep from them at $20/bl

581 formercorpsman  Sun, Aug 10, 2008 8:24:49pm

re: #566 Capitalistincharge

No doubt, that region is the political equivalent of manic depression.

It seems to me, Putin will do anything to keep his corner of the hegemony block.

I think it has become clear to most Marxist romantics, such a system can't sustain itself.

They realize the one thing it never produces, is capital.

I look at the political realm in Russia, as the real mob. Operationally.

They don't want to kill business, they just want the biggest cut of it.

This area they are at war over has the ability to seriously impact Russia's ability to influence price of world market oil, as well as divert a good percentage from having to route through the gulf as well.

This takes Iran's bellicosity down just a notch.

It is about oil.

Only problem, the long lost lover of the American left is the prostitutes, and the Russian's are the pimps.

Good analysis. It is definately about the oil and once Americans realize this Russian move is about oil and the consequences of an escalation in that part of the world, maybe they will vote McCain. I think we are going to see things progressively get uglier in the near future.

1. Russia, it would appear, has been planning this for sometime.
Yep. They had a full batlle plan in place and basically already had a puppet regime in both "disputed Regions" within Georgia.

2. The defiance of Iran and the most recent testings of weapons
Fully supported by Russia, in terms of nuclear fuel for their non-existent reactors, as well as the latest SAM systems, which the IAF will promptly neutralize, anyway.

3. Upcoming US elections
Putin is betting Obama will win

4. Lebanon and it's turbulence
5. Israel's PM problems

What am I missing. I'm sure we all can put together a real good list of indicators something is up and coming.

A few more indicators to add...Russia has a severe case of inferiority complex. They feel threatened. Their ICBM strike capability is being neutralized with the shield. All of their former satellites are leaving them and frankly hate them. They failed to install a puppet in Ukraine. Georgia is threatening to run the Azerbaijan pipeline though Turkey instead of through Russian pipelines. And bottom line, the USA doesn't have Ronald Reagan to stand up to the assholes of the world anymore. Reagan would have had the 101st Airborne Division in Georgia already. No questions asked. The timing was just too good for the Russkies to pass up.

I'm as shocked as anyone by what I see, literally on an hour by hour basis. I really think they want a Russian puppet as Prez in Georgia, and thus they will not relent until the current president steps down. And if I were Ukraine, I would not drop the soap in the shower while Russia was in there, if you catch my drift. Long term, Putin wants to return Russia to perceived Soviet glory. Bush was tough during the meat of his presidency, but Putin is betting on Obama, and he ain't afraid of Obama. He sees Obama as Carter redux. Which is only 99.9999999% accurate.

Israel is smart. Smarter than the Russians. I wouldn't doubt that every single Russian arms factory is completely infiltrated by the Mossad. They know the Russians' weaknesses before they even have a chance to sell their crap. And make no mistake, beyond the AK47, Russian equipment is crap. But it is cheap and available, and that is what countries like Iran and Venezuela care about.

Personal property rights, low taxation, etc.

Current term is a bastardization of the original meaning.

Thanks you, Charles, for opening registration to this long-time lurker and admirer. I'm from near the People's Republic of Ann Arbor, a diehard conservative and unpaid volunteer member of the Vast Global Jewish Conspiracy. Mozel AND tov, y'all.

My favorite sports are pulling the wings off Demozombie Underbelly members, beating up Kos Kidz for their milk money, and assorted verbal terrorism against liberals and other virulent pestilence. As is my custom in first posts, I ask this sincere question: "If you chase a liberal out in the street with a pack of large hungry dogs, is that being cruel to the dogs?"

As for lizardoid skin: I already have the thick skin. There are a helluva lot of moonbats living near Moscow on the Huron, here in the Democratic Party wasteland known as Meeeshigoon.
