US warning to Russia over Georgia

Speaking in Beijing, Mr Bush told NBC TV that he had spoken frankly to Vladimir Putin when the pair met at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games late last week.

"I said this violence is unacceptable," Mr Bush said, adding: "I was very firm with Vladimir Putin. Hopefully this will get resolved peacefully."

However, in a telephone call to Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, the US Vice-President, Dick Cheney, said Russian aggression "must not go unanswered".

God- I love Dick Cheney!

On second thought Charles, you might want to reconsider that Al Jazeera interview so they don't call you a "bastard" in absentia.

Easiest way out is to say, "Sure, I'd love to do an interview. You choose the time, I'll choose the place. Heads it's Mecca, tails it's Medina." Nothing fairer than that.

8 missykrissy  Mon, Aug 11, 2008 1:12:44am

Just finished watching the *entire* opening ceremony ( Hong Kong version - no edits ) and have to say I love the team march becasue:

1) There are so many different sorts of beautiful people on this planet.

2) Anyone watching can see where most of them are. (The differences between the huge groups from sane countries - even the smaller ones - and the tiny blips from the crazy ones speaks for itself.)

3) So many wonderful ethnic costumes are on display.

and

4) Number three applies even to the Islamic countries. In the sane ones - the ones with women - NOONE is wearing anything that would resemble a hefty bag.

Britain deplores Russian strikes on Georgia

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband condemned Russian military strikes against Georgia on Monday, saying recent bombings had taken fighting well beyond South Ossetia.

Miliband said he had spoken with "international colleagues" early on Monday and there was "widespread concern about the escalating violence in Georgia".

"British representatives on the ground and the media have reported that Russia has extended the fighting today well beyond South Ossetia, attacking the Georgian port of Poti, and the town of Gori, while Abkhaz forces have been shelling Georgian positions in the Upper Kodori valley. I deplore this," Miliband said in a statement.

He urged Russiato accept the offer of a ceasefire by the Georgian government, which he described as "very welcome"

As for Obama's pick for VP...

I will venture out here into the shark-infested waters of race, gender and the perception of social hierarchies. Keep in mind that these are hypothetical analyses -- not my personal philosophy.

First of all, I think it's essential to any Presidential candidate to choose a VP that has lower perceived political stature than the candidate himself. Because nothing is more ruinous to a presidential nominee's chance than to be "shown up" and outclassed by his own VP. It only would make the top half of the ticket look that much less presidential by comparison. That's why nominees often pick VPs with some weird flaw: bumblingness (Dan Quayle), lack of charisma (Al Gore, Dick Cheney), etc.

Now, this presents a big problem for Obama, for two reasons: Firstly, he already is about the least experienced senator, so it's hard to find someone of that stature less qualifed than Obama himself. So he's going to have to reach down to a lower level of the political spectrum. Secondly -- and here's where things get touchy and controversial -- black men are generally perceived by the American public -- rightly or wrongly, accurately or inaccurately, that's not the point -- to have lower social status than white men. Yes, this is undoubtedly the legacy of a racist/slave-economy past, but it's still there, this perception. Any two-person political team with a white man in a subservient position to a black man will seem "off" to a substantial portion of the American voting public. Even if that perception is entirely unconscious.

But Obama still has a trump card: He is after all a man. And -- time for controversy again -- men still have higher stature in society (or societal perceptions) than women. So if Obama were to choose a female running mate -- even a white one -- it would still maintain the necessary stature-hierarchy of the ticket. But if he were to choose an ethnic woman of some kind, his strategists would (correctly) assess that the ticket was simply too ethnic overall, so I think they'd nix the idea.

Hence, my prediction is:

Obama will choose a white female VP who is at maximum a state governor, or lower.

As to which white female governor/congresswoman/whatever -- that I couldn't tell you.

You might very well be right Zombie (what are you doing up at this hour?) but I still maintain that this is going to feel even more like a huge slap in the face to the millions of women who are already pissed at Hillary's disenfranchisement.

And if you want to contend that a white man in a subservient position to a black man is bad news, a white women in a position of subservient position to a black man is even less acceptable to the same group that would object to the first scenario.

I still think the only leverage against Russia will be 6-8 of the prior satellite-nations speaking with one voice, within the next 48 hours, saying

"BACK OFF Georgia, or we'll make life as difficult for you as we can!"

Either they all hang together or they'll hang separately, absorbed back into a resurgent thugocracy called Russian Federation of Socialist Slums

Yes, but that's not how Obama sees it. Obama, who's the one making the choice (theoretically), thinks that he has more stature than God Himself.

You may be right, while is why I think Obama is facing a BIG problem.

But I still think that a black man outranks a white woman in social perceptions, so that ticket would seem less "unnatural" than black man/white man to the average voter with unconscious social rankings.

A black man might outrank a white woman in social perceptions in some places (definitely not everywhere) but when you add in that subservience factor, a white woman subservient to a black man is NOT going to fly in a great big chunk of the country.

I'm almost thinking he is going to choose Bill Richardson, since Richardson is about the only one around with any foreign policy chops. And he is a minority, so the whole "white" thing is avoided. Of course he might in fact not be one whit more eligible to be POTUS than Barrack, but the Dems seem to like to ignore that.

TBILISI, Georgia — Georgia says it has received a Russian ultimatum that it must disarm troops near the breakaway province of Abkhazia or face Russian forces moving into Georgian-controlled territory.

Georgian Security Council chief Alexander Lomaia said Gen. Sergei Chaban in charge of Russian peacekeepers in Abkhazia conveyed the demand Monday through U.N. military observers in the area.

You can say that again!

Russian pushes rocket launchers, tanks to Georgia

Russia on Monday was pushing thousands of soldiers with dozens of tanks and multiple rocket launchers towards Georgia's rebel region of South Ossetia, a Reuters reporter at the scene said.

Russia's military is giving priority to Uragan (Hurricane) multiple rocket launchers on the serpentine mountain roads near Buron, just north of the Russian border with South Ossetia, the Reuters reporter said.

Dozens of mostly T-72 battle tanks are sliding towards the border with some older T-62 tanks, the reporter said. Thousands of Russian soldiers are streaming along the roads, which are peppered with tunnels through the mountains.

I'd heard of it from my friends, 30 years ago (it came out in 1976) but never saw it until today, when I bought a DVD for $2.50 (80 Baht)

Granny, they're GREAT! Thanks for asking.

Its a semi-official day off here, as tomorrow is the Queen's birthday, hence "Mother's Day" for the Thai nation... and we WILL all be off tomorrow...

They're busy raising Dozens of hamsters, and just today enjoyed for the very first time, a movie called "Bugsy Malone", featuring 15-year-old Jodie Foster and young Scott Baio... Wow! What a FUN story, and such CLASS!

Chilly here. Summer seems to have disappeared before it ever really started. Had a couple days in the hundreds in May that bolted most of the early garden, but now the tomatoes are loaded but just sitting around on the vines green.

Been busy as a cat rounding up books and stuff for the coming school year and canning like a mad woman.

I am very, very worried. Home heating oil is nearly $5 a gallon here - and that is if you sign a season contract. More if you don't unless the price falls. I am very worried about how the heck we are going to stay warm this year. Last year oil was ~$4 a gallon. I weatherized the dickens out of the place, but we still went through about $700 every 4 weeks or so.

And the high price of fuel is sending the price of groceries up - see the canning like a mad woman reference above. Ordering plastic buckets so I can lay in a store of grain items and keep it bug free.

re: #83 galloping granny

I'm awfully sorry to hear all that about the coming winter. It is a great worry - more so for you, perhaps.
We're worried as well, with prices for natural gas on the up. At least any household with someone over 60 years of age gets a winter heating payment of £200 from the government - drop of water, but still welcome.

Most older Brits have been brought up when heating a house was very restricted, so thre are all those tricks about how to keep warm.
One of the best and least costly invetions has to be the hot-water bottle. I'm sorting mine at the moment - sticking one under the jumper is actually hugely effective if one's sedentary.
Having a couple in the bed also helps ...

I never thought that we'd have to go back to these old habits, but looks as if its going to be a case of 'needs -must' ...

Ain't that the truth. Ever since the SoB's pulled their Iraq stunt with Chirac I've wanted our forces out of Eurabia(especially Germany) ASAP. Over the past couple months Germany's increased their exports to Iran(regardless of sanctions and Iran's nuclear goals), won't lift a finger to help Georgia - which will make them even more dependent upon Putin for fuel - and we're supposed to maintain and still provide for their security? Bullshit.

Putin’s next target will be Ukraine - Richard Holbrooke

Former Assistant Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke said Russia acted feeling hatred for Mikhail Saakashvili and wanted to overthrow the government, APA reports. Richard Holbrooke said in his interview to CNN that Russia trying to separate Abkhazia and South Ossetia from Georgia incited Georgia to the military conflict.

“No one needs cold war with Russia. But this country has intruded into the territory of a sovereign state. I was surprised at Bush’s embracing Putin in the opening of the Olympic Games. After that Putin was sitting while Bush and first lady were applauding the American team,” he said.

Richard Holbrooke called Mikhail Saakashvili the most democratic and pro-western leader in the region.

Asked whether the war could impact on the whole region, former diplomat said he did not believe it and that Ukraine would join the conflict.

“Putin’s next target will be Ukraine. But he can not do it there. Georgia has 5 million population and Ukraine 50 million. There are other factors, too,” he said.

Richard Holbrooke is expected to be Secretary of State in case Barack Obama is elected president.

I screwed up by not buying the proper size binder for The Kid's class--he needs the 1.5 inch kind. And, I got packs of college-ruled paper--I know it was in the same stack as the wider-ruled stuff. I've had this stuff for three weeks! Gah!

He cracked me up last night. When I tucked him in, he was already dressed for today. He said it would save time this morning and was not pleased when I made him put on his jammies. But, he just got up and was dressed before he left his room.

There may be some bounce back in oil prices with the fighting in the Georgia. But those holding oil futures that were bought last June and July for $150/barrel have a big problem. Falling demand in NAmerica, Europe, and Japan and a rising dollar have taken the air of the commodities bubble that has been rising for 18 months. What happened in real estate and Dot Com stocks happened with commodities -namely with oil futures. The price went to a point that had no basis in reality. The dollar would not fall forever, and demand actually has been weakening for a year. Hedge fund managers and others jumping on oil as a hedge against inflation created much of the problem (as did the Fed). Now these speculators own billions in oil future contracts. Good luck trying to find a buyer at $150/barrel. Of course, there is still hope for them. Obama could still win in November. If he does, look for an immediate spike in oil.

The US has a golden opportunity to at least partially move the center of gravity in energy away from the Middle East and Russia. Both the US and Canada have nearly a trillion potential barrels of oil combined locked tar sands and shale. If any future President wants to defeat international terror without firing a shot, this is the chance. As usual, liberal orthodoxy (The self loathing Climate Change Crowd, and the "we can't drill our way out of this" Neo-Marxist Crowd) are the biggest stumbling block. The Democratic Party today reminds me of the rabid Polish Nationalists of the 1930s. They would rather see a foreign nation occupy their lands then to concede any success to their political opponents. In September 1939, the Poles got their wish; Treblinka and Katyn Forest are monuments to such treasonous ideology.

Heck, Texan, I would take some of those right now. We had a few days in the 100 degrees range back in May, just enough to cause all the early garden stuff to bolt. Has now rained and been in the 70s so long I am worried we may not get a tomato harvest at all. The vines are loaded but nothing is ripening.

And my farmer source for pickling cukes hasn't even had enough to spare a bushel because of the weather.

I mean, watch lock-up anynight of the week and guards are getting threatened constantly.

One threat in one prison against one guard really lets the Brit press shine.

This is absolutely true. I don't hire lawn services as a rule. We are suburban (!) have what some people would term a "McMansion" (they can KMA), and have a cul-de-sac lot somewhere just under 1/3 acre, with the vast majority in the back populated by about a dozen mature/semimature oaks. And the occasional doggie land-mine.

One Saturday, the grass was fine and high, the day was hot, and two young men knocked on the door at 10 am. The spokesman offered to mow, edge, and trim for $25. I dropped my jaw and asked if he would like to survey the yard first. He declined, and I accepted. They did a nice job and were paid, but for some reason I never saw them again. ;)

Maybe... maybe not.

Big Dick weighs in:

Vice President Dick Cheney spoke to the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on Sunday afternoon. The exchange is reported by the AP as:

“The vice president expressed the United States’ solidarity with the Georgian people and their democratically elected government in the face of this threat to Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Cheney’s press secretary, Lee Ann McBride, said. Cheney told Saakashvili “Russian aggression must not go unanswered, and that its continuation would have serious consequences for its relations with the United States, as well as the broader international community,” McBride said.

The key terms here are “Russian aggression” and “must not go unanswered”. Cheney obviously spoke privately to Saakashvili, but these phrases are meant for public consumption and read in the Kremlin.

The US airlifted the Georgian peacekeepers stationed in Iraq to help out in Georgia, but that's about all the US can do without getting directly involved. Russia is clearly intent on showing the Georgians a lesson, along with the rest of the former Soviet republics. Russia wants to maintain its sphere of influence and will use any and all means to so.

As for the anti-war movement's silence, let's remember something. It's not anti-war; it's anti-US sentiment. The overwhelming majority of those antiwar groups are opposed to the US defending itself, not pacifists.

Mandy, I thought this would interest you. This is an email we received today from very good friends that are in St. Petersburg. She is Russian and her husband is American, they spend half of the year in Russia taking care of her elderly mother. Her husband is due to leave Russia in two weeks...needless to say we have been concerned about them. Names have been removed.

Hi *****,

Thank you for your concern. *** thinks he will make it.

Actually you are absolutely right. Everybody here is getting crazy about situation with Georgia, some even call me to say something just to pinch me, I guess because my husband is American. It is very upsetting. It makes me upset and angry. I do not want to call anybody and receive anybody's calls. I get upset and start arguing though myself I am not sure who is right and who is wrong in that region. Historically it is very complicated. We watch news and read Internet all the time. We will never know exact truth. All channels are very antiwestern.

Love,
******

352 Kenneth  Mon, Aug 11, 2008 6:54:45am

Polans, the Baltic states, Ukraine & Turkey have all issued statements in support of Georgia and condemning "naked Russian aggression". The Turks have sent a warship to the Black Sea coast of Georgia.

The fact the Russians are pushing deep into central Georgia might not turn out to be a good strategy. The Russian forces are operating at the end of a long, thin supply line that passes through a couple of narrow gorges. Georgian commandos could play hell with Russian supply lines. Georgian Special Forces have been trained for the past 10 years by the US military, and so they are very good. The Russians missed the opportunity to knock the Georgians out with overwhelming force, so now the war will be decided through attrition. Attrition favors the side with the better supply position & the great will power. Russia is weaker on both those points.

Stop the genocide of the Ossetians!
The nationalistic and fascist government of Georgia from the year 1989 support the policy of the annihilation and the impression of the aboriginal Ossetian population from the territory that they occupy. From 1991 as a consequence of repeated military actions that were undertaken by the criminal authorities of Georgia against the small nations and the national purge murdered thousands of people –Ossetians, Abkhazians, Armenians, Russians. At the same time the scale of the genocide passed over the silence by mass media. The atrocity of the Georgian fascists, the tortures surpassed the one of the German fascists during the World War II.

Me: "Rats, I'd like to see him twice just to make sure I can at least eat on left side for the two weeks or so it's gonna take me to heal and one half hour appointment might not do it" [Note: my dentist only works two and a half days a week now, having sold out his practice].
Receptionist: "Well I understand and I see he had a cancellation for Thursday at Oh Dark Thirty."
Me: "GREAT! Put me down for Thursday and Friday!"
Receptionist: "I can't do that, I can't double book him".
Me: "Double booking would be two at the same time and day wouldn't it"?
Rec.: "Yes, it would"
Me: "GOOD, then put me down for a half an hour Thursday and a half an hour Friday."

I don't think it's at all over for the Georgians. The Russians screwed up badly in Chechnya, and the Chechens were much less armed than the Georgians. Georgia is further way from Russian supply lines. The Georgians have time on their side, while the Russians need to wrap this up as soon as possible.

Of the 3 possible outcomes:

1. Russian victory
2. Georgian victory
3. Stalemate

...the last 2 options favor the Georgians.

Something more than just dust, I assume? Laptops are, I think, hard to work with, just because everything is so tightly packed into the space. You always have to take everything out just to get to what has to be replaced.

It was in very rough shape when her mother got a new machine (extreme reliability issues.) So, the screen dropped out, we hauled it in to the local Mac service place and they called me up with an estimate >$1700 to fix every little thing imaginably wrong with this years-old, outdated machine instead of just the screen.

The sad thing is, nobody's going to do shit about it. At the least, the Russians will grab South Ossetia and Abkhazia. At the worst, the whole country.

*That* big, no, I don't think so. I'd say that realistically the worst case scenario is that this will have a demonstration effect for Russia's "near abroad", that they'd better do what Ivan says. Silver lining: it will focus the minds of the ex-Soviet bloc nations that are already in NATO wonderfully, and even wake up the French and Germans to the fact that the days of lazy America-bashing are over.

Transporting those troops is pretty ballsy since it means that we're clearly siding with the Georgians in a tangible way. We're not remaining neutral in the fight. Ukraine's actions yesterday to tell the Russians that if their navy leaves port to fight in Georgia, they can't return was impressive, but that's because they're trying to remain neutral by not allowing their territory be used as a base of operations against Georgia.

If he thinks pogroms will help him more than hurt him, he'll be anti-Semitic, but I think at this time, he knows that will look bad internationally, so he's more likely to go after those who express political opinions he doesn't like.

I think that the Russians figure they have us over a great big barrel and intend to pretty much behead us figuratively at least on the international stage.

If you go look at the map you will see that Georgia is pretty much due North (and not by much) of Mosul, Iraq. It would be easy enough to bring in the US military, but that would probably destabilize Iraq, and we are sandwiched there between Iran and Syria, both of whom are good buddies with Russia. Leaving us with a three front war immediately and the barn door wide open for the entire muslim world to march in and wipe Israel off the face of the map.

The Russians got badly mauled in the first Chechen War. Most estimates give figures of between 3,500 and 7,500 Russian military dead. In the Second Chechen War the Russians did manage to weaken the rebel forces & install a pro-Moscow regime, but occasional fighting continues.

This in a small region inside Russia, with @ 1 million people. Georgia has a population of about 4.6 million, separated from Russia by a mountain range accessed through a few thin gorges. Russia has never mastered their supply problems. The Georgians are also much better armed than the Chechens were. The longer this drags out, the better the Georgians will do.

realwest: Hi, I’m (finally) back.

Yesterday, I posted the following quote, and you inquired if I had a link for it :

“You’ve betrayed Vietnam. Someday you’re going to sell out Taiwan. And we’re going to be around when you get tired of Israel.” – Hafez al-Assad, to Henry Kissinger

In my previous post, I erroneously attributed that quote to Bashar al-Assad, and not his loathsome father Hafez. The Kissinger/Vietnam connection should have made it obvious, but I was pulling another all-nighter and I could barely still type, let alone think.

When you asked, I told you that I’d gotten the quote from a Mark Steyn column.

After getting a few hours of sleep, I was able to track the quote to a Newsweek interview with Henry Kissinger, which apparently is what Mark Steyn was referring to in his column. Here’s the link to Newsweek : [Link: www.newsweek.com...]

Additional info : the title of the Steyn column was Iraq As A Viet Nam Analogy?, published on 3 September 2007 in the Washington Times. I don’t have a specific link to their archives ; in fact, if you know a good way to get a link to that specific column, I’d appreciate it if you could give me that info.

Anyway, that’s the info I wanted to give you.

Many of Georgia's Internet servers were under external control from late Thursday," Armin said early Saturday in an entry on his Web site. According to his research, the government's sites dedicated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and the country's president, Mikhail Saakashvili, have been blocked completely, or traffic to and from those sites' servers have been redirected to servers actually located in Russia and Turkey.

Oh I agree with that, just saying we COULD HAVE escorted those transport planes.
And I agree about the Ukraine, but think it's deeper than just not wanting Russia to use Ukraine to keep their supply lines tighter.
Putin apparently is blithley unaware that the World has changed - DRAMATICALLY - in just 10 short years.
I mean Poland and other former "East Bloc" countries are actually working WITH the US on something Russia says "Absolutely NYET!" to ( the anti-missile basing and radar set ups being just two of 'em). Russia has a BIG military, but it's truly antiquidated, poorly maintained and they still are having trouble finding anything resembling "good" much less great fighter pilots.
And Putin better wake up FAST. Otherwise the rest of the World will keep on speeding right past Mother Russia (which, but for it's oil and natural gas would be a THIRD rate military power).

From my sources they are, as I said above, antiquidated - and TFK is right - we can still "micro-wave" their missles and their antimissle, anti-aircraft weaponry; they don't have even enough pilots for ONE squadron of their newest and best fighters and none of their current active duty fighters matches up well (forgetting for a minute how much better our pilots are) with our SuperHornets and can't even BEGIN to compete with the Raptor (F-22) and you know how true it is inwarfare: He who owns the skies, will win the wars.

Monday stuff:

The fragrance of flowers is due to the essences of oil which they produce.

The largest single flower is the Rafflesia or "corpse flower". They are generally 3 feet in diameter with the record being 42 inches.

The oldest living thing in existence is not a giant redwood, but a bristlecone pine in the White Mountains of California, dated to be aged 4,600 years old.

The pineapple was symbol of welcome in the 1700-1800's. That is why in New England you will see so many pineapples on door knockers. An arch in Providence RI leading into the Federal Hill neighborhood has a pineapple on it for that very reason. Pineapples were brought home by seafarers as gifts.

The plant life in the oceans make up about 85 percent of all the greenery on the Earth.

The popular name for the giant sequoia tree is Redwood.

The rose family of plants, in addition to flowers, gives us apples, pears, plums, cherries, almonds, peaches and apricots.

The world's tallest grass, which has sometimes grown 130 feet or more, is bamboo.

There are more than 700 species of plants that grow in the United States that have been identified as dangerous if eaten. Among them are some that are commonly favored by gardeners: buttercups, daffodils, lily of the valley, sweet peas, oleander, azalea, bleeding heart, delphinium, and rhododendron.

Wheat is the world's most widely cultivated plant; grown on every continent except Antarctica.

When a coffee seed is planted, it takes five years to yield consumable fruit.

When you give someone roses, the color can have a meaning. The meaning of rose colors:
Red = Love and respect
Deep pink = Gratitude, appreciation
Light pink = Admiration, sympathy
White = Reverence, humility
Yellow = Joy, gladness
Orange = Enthusiasm, desire
Red & yellow blend = Gaiety, joviality
Pale blended tones = Sociability, friendship

Willow bark, which provides the salicylic acid from which aspirin was originally synthesized, has been used as a pain remedy ever since the Greeks discovered its therapeutic power nearly 2,500 years ago.

Wine grapes, oranges, figs and olives were first planted in North America by Father Junipero Sera in 1769.

You're welcome. And, thanks for the links today. I don't know why this situation intrigues me this much. Maybe it's because I grew up during the Cold War, and was relieved when the Wall went down. For the past few years, I've been focused on Islam which--so far--has not represented an immediate threat such as Russia's nukes.

I could be soon with Iranian and Russian nukes.

One correction to what you said "Thus, if we do nothing we are paper tigers and if we continue to do something nothing then you are looking at WWIII." We have the military ability to free the skies over Georgia from Russian aircraft (with the clear impression that we could also clear the ground of Russian Armor and mechanized infantry if we chose to do so) and to not do so is to invite, I fear, a truly wider war.
WE HAVE TO STAND BY OUR ALLIES - Georgia and Israel among them. We don't stand with Georgia, how long do you think before Russia's client states attack Israel?

The long term Russian strategy is to regain control of as much of their former empire (USSR) as possible. That's why they have been supporting independence movements in the former USSR states, while crushing independence movements in Russian held territory (Chechnya). As for this particular gambit, if the Georgians loose, the Russians will be much encouraged to keep up the expansion, but not immediately. They would be better off to wait for President Obama.

Good morning galloping granny!

Morning Realwest. I agree with you. How're things with you?

The
long term Russian strategy is to regain control of as much of their
former empire (USSR) as possible. That's why they have been supporting
independence movements in the former USSR states, while crushing
independence movements in Russian held territory (Chechnya). As for
this particular gambit, if the Georgians loose, the Russians will be
much encouraged to keep up the expansion, but not immediately. They
would be better off to wait for President Obama.

Acting in the last months of a lame duck Presidency, while the world is watching The Olympics, isn't a bad time either. Putin is smart enough to know that there's no guarantee that Obama will be elected.

Remember when USSR boycotted our 1984 Olympics, China showed up, so perhaps this is a return "courtesy" which helps China save face & stand WITH US against other totalitarians.

There is a whole lot the US can do short of all-out war with Russia. The Russians have sent in an armor division to Georgia. But they have to supply it through a long narrow gorge. A couple hundred Georgian Special Forces (who have been training with the US for the past 10 years) armed with Javelin Anti-Tank missiles, would be capable of destroying the Russian armor. That would leave Russia humiliated with 10,000 infantry cut off deep inside Georgian territory. Not a pretty outcome for Putin.

The Ukrainian politician who was poisoned was part of the Orange Revolution. The Russians poisoned him.

Fox had a breakdown of Russian verses Georgian tanks, planes and heavy artillery...needless to say Georgia lost in all categories, BUT if IIRC nuclear warheads were dead even, perhaps an edge to Georgia...could that be correct?

Um, if by all out war you mean nuclear weapons, no.
If by all out war you mean using US conventional weapons to save Georgia, I say and have said before, YES we do.
You just can't desert your allies on the World stage and expect your other allies (Israel, South Korean, Taiwan and others) to believe in your "guarantees" of safety for them.
Plus - as I've indicated, we could clearly beat the crap out of the Russian Air Force and thus prevent them from taking over all of Georgia. WE didn't START this, but WE need to be there to end it with Georgia being whole and still an independent democracy.
Some things are worth fighting for.

Very nice. How would one pronounce it? ;>)

The first 'y' is pronounced like a short, dark 'i', there is no equivalent in the English language.
The 'a' is a short 'a' like in 'had'. The 'o' is pronounced as a short vowel, like in 'off', and the second 'y' is a long, dark 'i' ...
Oh - and las n English, there are no stops between the words.

The only acceptable (for me, that is) reason I can come up with is that Angela Merkel, who of course grew up in the former communist Germany, knows a lot about soviet and Russian history, and their paranoia. She probably thought that Putin needed to get over the First-rrsponse shields in Poland and the Chzech Republik before he could swallow another indigestible morsel, like Georgia in the NATO>

I seem to remember that there was quite a lot of fear in the air about Russia's reponse to Poland getting into NATO.
After all, between Russia and Berlin are only a couple of rivers, the rest is plains ...

Poor Poles have had the shit kicked out of them for a long time.

The thing to keep in mind is how many of their weapons can the Russians send into this battle. They can't take all their planes & tanks and send them down to Georgia. The real contest is between the entire Georgian armed forces fighting on their home territory and a small fraction of the Russian armed forces at the end of a long thin supply line. That tilts things strongly in Georgia's favor.

Ironically, there are 15 UN "observers" in the Abkhazia region of Georgia, where the Russians have also sent in troops.

re: #661 Kenneth

There is a whole lot the US can do short of all-out war with Russia. The Russians have sent in an armor division to Georgia. But they have to supply it through a long narrow gorge. A couple hundred Georgian Special Forces (who have been training with the US for the past 10 years) armed with Javelin Anti-Tank missiles, would be capable of destroying the Russian armor. That would leave Russia humiliated with 10,000 infantry cut off deep inside Georgian territory. Not a pretty outcome for Putin.

The US can also provide good intel up to & including JDAMS & satellite signals to the Georgian air force.

Is that the Pankisi Gorge to which you refer? I just wanted to write that word, not sure if spelled correctly.

Very true. Air superiority is the one thing the Russians do have the Georgians outclassed on. Now the Ukrainians & the Turks have both announced their support of Georgia. If they lent their planes for a fly by it might persuade the Russians to back off. If the US sent a detachment of fighter jets to Encirlik airofrce base in Turkey and announced some "routine exercises" it would have a similar sobering effect on the Russians.

I understand, but my question was about nuclear warheads. That report had Russia at 2100 and Georgia at 2300...don't hold me to these numbers, but they were very close. I'm sure Russia would love to get there hands on those nuclear warheads as well.

Well it's sure not a party we're in! But I seriously think, my friend, that the US could clear Georgian skies of Russian aircraft - over and over again if need be, and use the Warthogs (which are, iirc, in reach of the area) to bust up Russian armor and mechanized infantry.
Yes it would be extremely difficult and dangerous; but to not do that would be even more difficult and dangerous down the road. And not very far down the road, either.

(The only aggravating expression in Welsh is strictly reserved for the English, who are called 'Saeson', or 'Saes', with a sharp 's', the 'e' more like an 'i', pronounced as two separate vowels, not a diphtong, and it sounds lovely and hissy - and the English hate it!)

The Pankisi gorge is in eastern Georgia, south of Chechnya. There's another mountain pass in central Georgia, where the main Russian attack is focused, & a gorge in western Georgia where another Russian attack is ongoing. Those are the only overland routes into Georgia from Russia. IF the Russians are stupid enough to drive too far in without controlling the mountains around the gorges, the Georgian army can cut them off. Much depends upon which key weapons systems the US supplies the Georgians with.

(as a matter of fact, in one exercise, two F-22's simulated a dogfight against 18 F-15 Eagles - which have NEVER lost a dogfight - not even one plane - in it's operational history and the result was all 18 F-15 Eagles were shot down; the F-22's never had a scratch on 'em).

And if Putin's idea is to make it easier for Israel to get whacked by Iran, he's still wrong - Israel is, iirc, already in possession of nukes, missiles and submarines which can launch nuke warhead missiles into Iran, oh before the Iranian missiles even hit Israel.

Poor Poles have had the shit kicked out of them for a long time.

Somehow I think things would be different this time around. Poles have been training with US, Swedish and Israeli military advisors. They've bought F16's from the US and have gone to a Swedish model of aircraft dispersal (using hidden bunker hangers positioned near highways that can be used as airfields in an emergency) instead of having all their fighters concentrated at military airfields. Having been a member of the Warsaw Pact, they are familiar with both the strengths and weaknesses of Russian hardware and battle doctrine. Poland has always looked to alliance with America since our Revolutionary War and much intelligence on Soviet capabilities in the Cold War was passed on to us by a Polish military officer who wanted Poland to be free from Soviet domination.

Currently downing a 32oz slushie to keep the swelling down. A little trick I tried when I got my wisdom teeth pulled. Worked then and had no complications. I'm just praying for a repeat performance.
