Should one point out that from ancient times a decline in courage has been considered the beginning of the end?

In the ancient times of Rome the mothers would say to their sons "come back with your shield or on it." When that tradition declined, so did Rome.

It was the ancient Greeks who used that refrain.

It was because in standard rank formation, a soldier's shield was used to protect the soldier NEXT to them. For that reason, losing your shield was letting your team down, and was considered highly dishonorable.

solzhenitsyn was on a train, heading from one siberian hell to another. he sat next to an old woman who kept repeating to herself...

"people have forgotten god, that is why all of this has happened."

he wrote that in the following 40 years of research and study, he never found a better explanation than that.

The Spartans were famous for their military efficiency. In fact, the very word, "spartan" used as an adjective is synonymous with frugality and self-denial.

The same was true about Spartan wit, which characteristicly employed a terseness with words.

re: #12 RedPepper

What viewpoint would you look at it through? (Oooh, crappy grammar, but it's late and I'm tiredP).

Individual courage is not encouraged nor acknowledged. Community courage is not reported on or if it is, it is mocked. Our leadership defines us. Our three branches of government make a stand for all of us. You can say "well, I have courage," but how is that conveyed as NATIONAL courage? The impression we are giving now is that with the exit of our current administration, we will be weak and vulnerable. American courage is being tested by Russia today. Do we have an answer? Doesn't look like it, individual blustering commentary, notwithstanding.

A high ranking Russian General was riding a train through the Urals. In the compartment with him rode a lowly Polish private, a beautiful young lady, and an old woman well past her years and devoid of any resemblence of beauty.
The train entered a tunnel and all was black. The darkness was pierced by the sound of a kiss, followed by a hearty smack.
When the train emerged from the tunnel, the general sported a fresh shinner.
The general thought to himself "that no good private, he kisses the girl, and I get slapped."
The old woman thinks, "Good for that young lass, not allowing advances on her like that."
The young lady thinks, "why did the general kiss the old woman instead of me?"
The polish private thinks, "Man oh man am I smart. I kiss the back of my hand, punch a general, and no one will ever know."

Heh. This could be fun to watch:

Evidence accumulates favoring the possibility of a Hillary coup at the Denver convention, and it is being noticed among the sharper observers of politics.

From within the Hillary camp comes a far-from-innocent observation by her former communications director, Howard Wolfson. Brian Ross and Kaje Tapper of ABC News report:

Sen. Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic presidential nominee if John Edwards had been caught in his lie about an extramarital affair and forced out of the race last year, insists a top Clinton campaign aide, making a charge that could exacerbate previously existing tensions between the camps of Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama.

"I believe we would have won Iowa, and Clinton today would therefore have been the nominee," former Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson told ABC News.com.

Once upon a time, Hillary dismissed this sort of speculation with the phrase,. "shoulda, coulda, woulda...." But if anyone thinks Wolfson is saying this all on his own, for no particular reason, they ought to read up on the history of the Clinton Machine.

There's a lot more where that came from. Go read the whole thing.

re: #18 Russkilitlover

From what viewpoint would you look at it through ? (My attempt ...)

Well, by way of an answer, here is a quote - usually attributed (apparently, incorrectly) to Sir Winston Churchill :

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ~ (not) Winston Churchill

[ According to The Churchill Centre ( [Link: www.winstonchurchill.org...] ) , Churchill never said this : “We base this on careful research in the canon of fifty million words by and about Churchill, including all of his books, articles, speeches and papers.” ]

Oh, well. It's still a not-completely-bogus way to look at it, even if Winston didn't say it ...

Absolutely, that too.

The point is, though, that because of the widespread use of the phalanx formation, the shield took on special significance for the Ancient Greeks, and losing it, particular stigma. If you came back without your helmet, greaves, or spear, that wasn't so dishonorable.

According to Plutarch, when asked why it was dishonorable to return without a shield and not without a helmet, the Spartan king Demaratos (510-491 BC) is said to have replied: "Because the latter they put on for their own protection, but the shield for the common good of all."

Hence the "With it, or on it" phrase used (in characteristic terse fashion) by the Spartans.

We were talking some about James Taylor and I don't know why - although I think it was cause someone mentioned Roy Orbison or he just flitted across my mind, but he wrote and performed a song called "Crying" and when there was a tribute to Roy by a wide variety of artists, K.D. A Roman Legion beats a mob of warriors every time.

(Unless the Roman general is an idiot.)

It was the Celts who convinced the Romans to change their tactics. They kept getting their asses handed to them.

Remind me, who wore skirts?

Woads didn't wear anything at all. They charged into battle with their "How do you do's" flapping in the breeze.

You know, at first, there were articles in the paper every day about the city and the convention. And then when people started to discover that our mayor and the convention commitees were screwing all this up big time, now I see very little press coverage.

If the protestors don't give in and hold back, I'm telling you, all hell is going to break loose and the city will not be able to handle it properly.

Wash, dry one cup blueberries

radicchio-place on plate
One peach-halved, slice or do whatever you like to do.
Cucumber, slice however you like.

Blend 6 oz. Lemon yogurt with blueberries-spread on lettuce, peach, cukes.

Olmert gives Abbas plan for Israeli pullout from 93% of West Bank

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has presented Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas with a detailed proposal for an agreement in principle on borders, refugees and security arrangements between Israel and a future Palestinian state.

Olmert, who met with Abbas this week, feels there is time to reach an agreement during his remaining time in office. He is now awaiting a decision from the Palestinians.

The centerpiece of Olmert's proposal is the suggested permanent border, which would be based on an Israeli withdrawal from most of the West Bank. In return for the land retained by Israel in the West Bank, the Palestinians would receive alternative land in the Negev, adjacent to the Gaza Strip. The Palestinians would also enjoy free passage between Gaza and the West Bank without any security checks, the proposal says.

Yup, he wrote it and sang it - but contrary to popular beleif out here (glares over at Salem) only two MAGNIFICENT versions of that song were ever really done: Roy's when he was "younger" and had more range than he did toward the end, and K.D. It was the ancient Greeks who used that refrain.

It was because in standard rank formation, a soldier's shield was used to protect the soldier NEXT to them. For that reason, losing your shield was letting your team down, and was considered highly dishonorable.

My last wife lived on the Taos pueblo for a while as a child. We were down there about 8 years ago, and she was appalled on how commercial it had become. I called it an Indian Disney Land.

For that matter, the who town of Taos has become a tourist trap.

IMHO

Taos pueblo and the town have to attract tourists. There's not a lot of private land, and the land that is free is pretty expensive. Not enough water for any real industry......there's no way for either to support themselves without tourism.

The Imperial Japanese were brutal and deranged by worship of a religion that was also the political state.

They invited, and got, the total war they deserved.

I do not think the world has the resolve to fight that kind of war today, though their are equally lunatic (pun intended) forces begging for genuine shock and awe.

Lady Nancy Astor : “Sir, if you were my husband, I would poison your tea !”
Winston Churchill : “Madam, if you were my wife, I would drink it !”

Variant :

Lady Nancy Astor : “If I were your wife, Winston, I’d poison your tea.”
Winston Churchill : “And if you were my wife, I’d drink it !”

( Anecdotal. )

------------------

Churchill biographer Sir Martin Gilbert said this exchange was more likely to have occurred between Lady Astor and Churchill’s good friend F. E. Smith, Lord Birkenhead, a notorious acerbic wit. But both Consuelo Vanderbilt (The Glitter and the Gold) and Christopher Sykes (Nancy: The Life of Lady Astor) say the riposte was by Churchill. The argument was rendered moot when Fred Shapiro, in The Yale Book of Quotations, tracked the origins of the phrase to a joke line from a 1900 edition of The Chicago Tribune.

OK. the German villages were set up like granges. The entire village rented the land. A small holding might be 640 acres ( a square mile), a large one 4 times that. There were three parts, fields, pasture, forest and pond. The fields rotated. the forest and ponds were carefully preserved to protect firewood, fish, and game. As well as nature itself. Animals were shared for tillage, but not food. Grain was shared and allocated for rent. But adequate food came first. like granges, officials were elected.

Good factoids. I did know about seed dispersal by that method. In fact some seeds need to be primed by digestive tracks to germinate properly. Another fact, forest fires are a form of regeneration and are required by some pines in North America. The pinecones will only open after being heated by a strong fire. And they will open after any fire has passed. Thus the seeds are released into a fresh area clear of overgrowth and made fertile by the ashes of the previous denziens.

But they RARELY want to hear our answer: Hard work, CARING about their homework, their school life, their skinned knees and skinned hearts... as well as learning about EFFECTIVE Learning Strategies, and then applying them with discipline, love and oodles of Encouragement and Praise while modeling the values we want them to have...

This morning's news is reporting that Russia has decided to halt hostilities since "Georgia has been punished enough" for trying to take back its own territory. I interpret this to mean that:

The Russians now think the Georgians are cowed and won't be independent-minded and will follow Moscow's directives.

And/Or the Georgians finally figured out how to close the tunnels and mountain passes the Russians were using.

And/Or the Russian war machine is running out of stamina and the Russians wish to retreat with honor before all their equipment breaks down.

And/Or the threats from the West/UN (I know) and such actually had some barb that the Russians thought would hurt.

So for now it appears that the hostilities have ceased or are ceasing. I, for my part, would not be against US foreign aid to help rebuild what was damaged in Georgia. We could divert aid from some of those less-than-gracious recipients.

re: #393 David IV of Georgia

Yes. We could pay for that foreign aid out of Russia's assets that are held in the West. Or with an additional tax on exports to Russia.

BTW, in all of this did anyone notice the details of the new "5 year plan" style import regs in Russia?

Y'know....I went to Yankee Stadium on the 4th of July this year. During the 7th inning, there was a lengthy rain delay. It started out OK, with Sinatra songs playing over the stadium PA system for the first few minutes.

Then it went downhill from there. It was non-stop Yankeeography on the jumbotron and PA system, which in and of itself wouldn't be so bad, but it was narrarated by pretentious douchebag and occasional Yankee broadcaster John Stirling.

Keep in mind this is an hour and 20 minute rain delay wer're talking about. The whole time I was thinking 'Am I being punished? Did I die and wind up in hell without knowing it?'. You see, were it not for the Red Sox coming back to take the lead, I would've been convinced I was in hell....or at least the low-rent district of purgatory.

But now I've caught a glimpse of hell on earth. Just the mere thought of it is enough to drive any lizard insane. With that in mind, click on the link at your own peril.

433 Tigger2005  Tue, Aug 12, 2008 3:59:53am

I'm not completely sure this is a matter of lack of courage. I think it's more a case of needing to re-learn how to deal with the aggressive Russian bear. The Russians got away with a hell of a lot before we developed a counter-strategy of aggressive confrontation. Could that strategy have led to nuclear war? Possibly, but letting the Russians rampage unchecked would CERTAINLY have led to nuclear war eventually.

Reagan observed that when you confronted the Russians firmly, they eventually backed down (yes, that just means they're waiting for another day or another decade). It actually seems like it would take LESS courage to follow Reagan's strategy, since we know it works, whereas it takes insane, foolhardy courage to follow the strategy of waffling and appeasement, as history has shown over and over, leads almost inevitably to disaster.

We are letting the Russians and their nukes scare us too much. We took far, far more provocative actions against a nuclear-armed Soviet Union and we're still here. Stand unequivocably for Georgia and pour in the weapons they need, and Russia would most likely back off.
