Obama Snubs US Soldiers Again

Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 8:51:36 am PDT

Barack Obama said he couldn’t attend a military “town hall” meeting because he had a prior engagement. That “prior engagement” was a vacation in Hawaii: Obama Snubs U.S. Soldiers Again.

Maybe he can get tips on how to be sneaky and elusive from John Edwards.

I'm sure Obama knows most soldiers don't like him very much, and is thus trying to avoid them. Of course, it doesn't look very good from a PR standpoint.

Obama gets a major endorsement.

It’s sad that some who seek progressive change are missing the forest for the trees. But they will not dampen the wide and deep enthusiasm for blocking a third Bush term represented by John McCain, or for bringing Obama by a landslide into the White House with a large Democratic congressional majority.

Who are BHO's friends.....

50 lawhawk  Tue, Aug 12, 2008 9:03:54am

Obama will not want to engage in these town hall meetings because it would expose what we've already come to learn. He simply is incapable of thinking on his feet and actually mangles facts and logic worse than anything Bush has been known to do.

Consider town hall meetings pop quizes. They give insight into how a candidate thinks on their feet, their general knowledge and even if they know the questions in advance, it sets up unpredictability that a scripted answer will not cover.

That's why he's avoiding them.

And for him to skip out on yet another military visit is just wrong. He's in Hawaii? He could stop at Pearl and visit the sailors and Marines there. He wants to be C-in-C without actually ever seeing or meet with the troops under his command? That's not going to sit well with the rank and file.

ok tyou it was supposed to be something relating to this;We may be skeptical of his fealty to this principle, when he told the Teamsters union he would end federal oversight of the union in exchange for their electoral support. Such oversight was the result of a long history of corruption of the union. It was an unusual stance for a Presidential candidate; one not taken at any time before by any candidate. Up until now, union anti-corruption efforts have been treated as a legal matter left to the Justice Department. Barack Obama instead offers to lift this monitoring -- meant to prevent crime -- in order to gain votes.

Obama doesn't need the US military. He is going to create his own once he becomes President and will do away with our present fighting forces.

That's scary, sounds like the SS ruling over the Wehrmacht. The SS saluted with the extended arm, the Wehrmacht [Army, Navy, Air Force] had the regular military salute. Things changed after Jun '44 though.

I can see it now; Obama's Elite Guard giving the "O" salute !

A group called Spouses for Change were one of the primary sponsors of this meeting. They had received a commitment from John McCain to attend but I don't know if he attended or not. Nothing in the news but that don't mean nothing since they only tell us what they think we ought to know.

Found it! The Defection of Simas Kudirka, Lithuanian

Alan Arkin stars as real-life Lithuanian seaman Simas Kudirka, a radio operator on a Russian vessel. When his ship docks at Martha's Vineyard in early 1970, Kudirka makes a dramatic leap from the deck, landing on the American coast guard cutter Vigilant. He announces that he wishes to defect, but the rules of maritime law prohibit the Americans from offering him asylum. As the crew of the Vigilant looks on helplessly, the Russian officers board the cutter, beat and bind Kudirka, and drag him back to his own ship. This tinderbox political incident occurs during a Soviet/U.S. conference over fishing rights. The ultimate fate of Simas Kudirka provides the core of Bruce Feldman's script. Directed for television by David Lowell Rich (who won an Emmy), The Defection of Simas Kudirka was first broadcast January 23, 1978.

"Enough" would be every time he has a reasonable opportunity. There is a war going on, you know, and being against the war doesn't automatically make you against the troops. . .DOES IT?

The problem isn't that he doesn't visit every week, nor should he have to. Its that he's missed several good chances.

Would you argue that cancelling his planned meeting with US soldiers in Germany so he could go work out at the gym was wrong?

He's making it so by repeated snubs.

I think its possible for non-military inclined elected office holders to earn the respect of the military, even those who don't necessarily support the war. But Obama surely isn't making the effort to be one of these.

And that's the point. The guy wants to be commander in chief. He says he wants to bring the poor soldiers home. So why has he repeatedly snubbed them?

Heh Heh

GUTS & BALLS

We've all heard about people having guts or balls, But do you really know
the difference between them?
In an effort to keep you informed, the definition for each is listed below
...

GUTS - is arriving home late after a night out with the guys, being met by
your wife with a broom, and having the guts to ask: "Are you still cleaning
or are you flying somewhere"?

BALLS: - is coming home late after a night out with the guys, smelling of
perfume and beer, lipstick on your collar, slapping your wife on the
butt.... and having the balls to say : "You're Next"

I hope this clears up any confusion on the definitions.

Medically speaking, there is no difference in the outcome,
since both ultimately result in death. ------

Here's a link that contains a piece of McCain's statement, as well as a link to the full statement.

Here is a State Dept. spokesman, presumably speaking for the administration.

Wood said the United States was hopeful that the U.N. Security Council would pass a "strong" resolution on the fighting that called for an end to attacks on both sides as well as mediation, but prospects for such a statement were dim given that Russia wields veto power on the 15-member body.

The fact that the town meeting was several thousand miles from where the vacation was taking place would seem to be enough of an explanation as to why he wouldn't be able to attend.

"Working vacation" was my terminology. I don't think either McCain or Obama is getting much real time off these days. Several of his senior staff members are with him in Hawaii. I doubt they're there because they all like surfing.

Two, you came in here, picked out my comment and tried to start crap with me because of what I said. I don't take kindly to being silenced on my opinion. We disagree, fine. Whatever, but don't try to make me out to be the bad guy.

Three, being President of the United States is a big responsiblity, and if Obama is having issues already with the time contraints and issues with his life, then is NOT up to the job. Just look at what President Bush has had to put up with for 8 years. Obama and his supporters need to grow a thicker skin, if you're going to get this riled up.

I think pretty much any president would find it impossible to be in two places at once.

You're the one who's riled up. I just happened to address your comment because it was near the end of the queue. Nothing personal.

NObama doesn't want to visit the troops because when he downsizes the military, there wont be any pictures of him with the soldiers he has let go.

re: #162 JustMyView

The fact that the town meeting was several thousand miles from where the vacation was taking place would seem to be enough of an explanation as to why he wouldn't be able to attend.

But the point is that that is not what he said. He said he had a "prior engagement." Now, "engagement" generally means "appointment." I have never heard anyone characterize a vacation (working or otherwise) as an "engagement."

He could have said, "You know, I scheduled vacation months ago, and my family and I really need a break. How about we re-schedule the town meeting for a mutually convenient day?" But he didn't do that, either. Clearly, he had no intention of facing questions from the soldiers but was too much of a wuss to just say he was going on vacation.

"Working vacation" was my terminology.

Good of you to admit that you are putting your own spin on Obama's statement in an attempt to minimize the fact that he called a vacation a "prior engagement."

I don't think either McCain or Obama is getting much real time off these days. Several of his senior staff members are with him in Hawaii. I doubt they're there because they all like surfing.

Again, you are off and running with your assumptions and doubts, which have no basis in fact. Maybe his senior staff members love to surf and just wanted a vacation in Hawaii that would be paid for by the campaign.

re: #176 Kenneth

Well, Obama did say he would order "his" Joint Chiefs of Staff to bring an end to the Iraq war, in complete ignorance of the chain of command under the Commander in Chief. So yes, I do think Obama doesn't know what he's talking about.

My God, after nearly eight years of GWB, I can't believe there is anyone left who is sensitive to minor errors in phrasing when people speak informally. You'd think we'd all have gotten used to the idea that being president needn't require one to speak clearly or correctly.

It's not a matter of being in 2 places at once, it's a matter of where he chooses to be. If the military was important to Obama, then he would choose to be with them more often. They're not & he doesn't. Screw him.

Aww, how heartwarming to know that I was in the right place at the right time. Still you evade and play games with us, fine. You deliberately miss the point that Obama is going to have to sacrifice some of his "fun time/vacation" to be President of the United States--Oh well, I wash my hands of you, troll.

It helps actually. But more importantly, they need to understand the powers & responsibilities of the office. Obama does not.

By the way, did you know that Obama has been a US Senator for less time than John McCain spent as a POW? And McCain's "attendance record" was a heck of a lot better, too.

Obama has taken one week off for what is, I'll contend, a working vacation. (As I recall, he also took off Easter weekend, but has had no other consecutive days away from campaigning this year.) When he comes back, there'll be no rest until after the election. I'm not feeling sorry for him. But I do think it's a little silly to act as if he's leading a leisurely life and can't be bothered to do things for other people.

Enjoy the rest of your day. I'm off to enjoy mine.

I'll make the lame excuse that it was very late at night when I forgot. But the Lizard Army's night guard reminded me quickly.

I would never assume that the State Dept. is speaking for anyone but its own entrenched interests, which have nothing in common with the current administration.

I believe the new "O" symbol is for how big an asshole he is...and i think he's an asshole the size of a hula hoop, as opposed to two hands together...they ought to revise the "o" symbol to use arms outstretched in a circle, not just hands and fingers forming it.

Yes, I could totally believe that until yesterday BHO didn't know that Russia has a veto power in the UNSC. I suspect that there's a lot BHO doesn't know. I don't think his education at Columbia included the kind of coursework necessary to understand history and the modern world - beyond community organizing and Marxist theory. I'm worried about the important stuff that BHO has no clue about, and doubly worried about the things BHO thinks he knows, but really doesn't.

Trip to Hawaii not finalized as of July 13, 2008

It's not 100 percent finalized, but U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie says its a "virtual certainty" that Sen. Barack Obama will vacation in Hawaii next month before the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 25.
"It's very likely that he'll be taking a little R and R before the convention," he said by phone from his home in Honolulu yesterday. "We'll know soon. It's under consideration and a virtual certainty."
He would not say how he learned of the Illinois senator's possible tropical getaway, but said it would likely be a short trip in late August.

Interesting that the Hawaii trip was to be in LATE AUGUST, according to Abercrombie.
Also, since the Weekly Standard article is dated July 12, 2008, it is obvious that Obama:
1. Lied; and,
2. Refused to attend the event at all; and,
3. Refused to provide alternate dates, as he was asked to do.
At the time he was invited to the Town Hall on August 11, he was planning to be in Hawaii in late August.
What a scumbucket.

with the kind of math Obanal uses in his economic & tax policies, it's possible that for him, August 11th *is* late in the month.......

re: #168 Kenneth

Spin it any way you like it, buddy. If it really mattered to Obama he would indeed find the time to meet with the military. It was really nice of him to visit Walter Read Hospital. Once.

My guess is Obama is afraid of an unscripted unstaged untelepromptered townhall meeting with the military because he knows he might be asked "difficult" questions he has no smooth answer to.

Or he would have to flip-flop on the next day.

No. Wait. Dems do not flip-flop, they "refine" their positions. Neither do they lie, they just "misspeak." Republicans flip-flop and lie. Sorry for the confusion.

This is hysterical. For the last eight years the left has been howling over how "stupid" "inarticulate" and "dumb" Bush is for not being a great speaker and mocking how he'll coin new words like strategery (did he really say that?).

Allow me to point out there's a mountain of difference between mispronouncing a word like nuclear or telling people he just visited 57 states with one more to go.

Obama only sounds good when he's looking at a teleprompter, albeit he says nothing while sounding good. When asked tough questions without his teleprompter, the only thing he can come up with is "uh, you know, well, uh, mmm, uh yeah, right, like I said, uh, mmm, that's the answer."

re: #43 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

Can you just see some decorated WWII vets blocking Obama and his posse from visiting the USS Arizona and daring the SS to force them out of the way or arresting them? Especially on live video.

I know this is a dead thread but still, that image is a compelling one.
