"Stop this massive transefer of wealth to countries that don't like us very much"

Meanwhile, back at the Senate:

The Loft: GOP Senators Killing Energy Issue for Republicans and America

Last week, I wrote on efforts by House GOP members to draw attention to the fact that Nancy Pelosi sent House members home for the summer without a vote on domestic oil drilling. The American people want it, and the GOP House members are fighting for it. I also wrote on how big the energy issue is. It could be THE issue of the upcoming elections... an issue upon which Republicans could run AND win.

However, this is a new week, and whenever too much time passes, there is bound to be a new effort by the GOP to stall momentum and stab conservatives right in the heart. Who needs Democrats when so many GOP "leaders" act just like them? Now, we have the "Gang of 10." This group of senators (5 Republicans and 5 Democrats) claims to have forged a "bi-partisan energy compromise." In reality, we have a group of five GOP senators who are set on taking the winning issues of drilling and energy off the table and selling out to the liberals...

Obama is very happy that he is on vacation. He is unprepared and his 300 member foreign policy team seems to be made up entirely of has beens that have no solutions or suggestions for real conflict. The fact that the USA cannot be effective in every crises is a scary thought to airheads that think talk is action. Sometimes all one can do is to prepare for the next perceived crises, and Obama is against military spending of any sort.

103 Thanos  Tue, Aug 12, 2008 9:32:33am

I don't mind calling them just Russia, they were invading their neighbors well before the Soviet Union came to be ( look up "The Great Game" as one for instance.) It's the imperialistic nature of that nation. (Last time they crushed Georgia was in the 1920's as Communists, but the time before it was Imperial Russia.)

In 1783, Russia and the eastern Georgian Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti signed the Treaty of Georgievsk, according to which Kartli-Kakheti received protection by Russia. This, however, did not prevent Tbilisi from being sacked by the Persians in 1795.

On December 22, 1800, Tsar Paul I of Russia, at the alleged request of the Georgian King George XII, signed the proclamation on the incorporation of Georgia (Kartli-Kakheti) within the Russian Empire, which was finalized by a decree on January 8, 1801,[20][21] and confirmed by Tsar Alexander I on September 12, 1801.[22][23] The Georgian envoy in Saint Petersburg reacted with a note of protest that was presented to the Russian vice-chancellor Prince Kurakin.[24] In May 1801, Russian General Carl Heinrich Knorring dethroned the Georgian heir to the throne David Batonishvili and instituted a government headed by General Ivan Petrovich Lasarev.[25]

The Georgian nobility did not accept the decree until April 1802 when General Knorring compassed the nobility in Tbilisi's Sioni Cathedral and forced them to take an oath on the Imperial Crown of Russia. Those who disagreed were arrested temporarily.[26]

Before that they came as the Mongol Horde...

Which isn't really possible. Unfortunately.

Of course the Russians can pay. Flood Georgia with IEDs. Be better than the Iranians removing any American markings and put Georgian markings. Send torpedos to Georgia for the Russian navy. Do it thru Turkey or with an airlift. Stingers should be flooding the streets of tbilisi. A dozen anti-tank weapons in every Georgian house. At least we should help a democratic ally defend itself. We did it for a bunch of uneducated totalitarian thugs in Afghanistan.

A lot of people think we have to send troops. How naive...

If the Russians think they are showing any particular military prowess, they are wrong. It would seem that we better get in the business of selling advanced weapons systems to the other Eastern European nations and teaching them how to use them. The other side is whether Georgia showed they know what to do with their new toys, either. OK, apparently nobody expected the Soviets, er, whatever, to send in a full invasion force, and even if the Georgians had a plan for such a thing (I mean, besides "run away"), they were not in DefCon 1. it would be interesting to know whether there is an adequate supply of shoulder mounted surface to air missiles in Georgia since a good number of those russian attack aircraft shown on the news seem to be operating extremely low.

While mounted anti-air artillery makes a good target, smaller weapons may be a real gift to the Georgians right now. If they could neutralize the air threat, it may give them the time they need to organize against the Russian armor. Anyone have a few thousand spare Javelins or Stingers? Would be an excellent live fire demonstration in how quality defeats quantity (when used by someone with guts and knowledge). People are comparing the Georgian fallback to a Rourke's Drift type of maneuver. It took the Boxer Henry .45 at Rourke's, the Georgian's need something equally heavy wen hunting bear.

A blog called Cicero's Songs (London) has a list of things the West can do to make Russia suffer for its aggression in Georgia. Excerpt:

Do Russian spies not function with impunity? Expel them.
Is investment going to Russia? Stop it.
Is technology going to Russia? Ban it.
Do Russians enjoy shopping in the West- no visas.
Russian cyber attacks? Close the Russian Internet access to the outside world, as it is reopened, close it again, and again- replicate the cyber attacks they launched against Georgia (oh, and NATO, last year).
Does Russia like i-phones? No export of any technology.
Does Russia wish to join WTO? Stop it
Are they members of the "G-8"? No, you mean G-7.
Abrogate all military treaties including START.
EBRD and EIB investments in Russia? Suspend them.
No most favoured nation status- extra tariffs on Russian exports.
Russia craves respectability? Deny it- it is a thuggish third rate power- it will be hurt by a concerted boycott- so hurt it!

There is a comment function to allow more suggestions. There have to be consequences for Russia's actions. Russia is a sick bear, chained to its dying demography, lashing out at the encroaching darkness.

The Russians have gone so far into the espionage business that it is surprising to see them in an out and out battle ala mid 20th century. If we got the right equipment into the right hands, I imagine there could be some real damage done back to them.
