Who are we? The answer to this question is not only one of the tasks, but the task of science.

Being is a Pee Match with Darwin and the intelligent design folks
goes against that goal. LETS beat the pants of that socialist Obama
then we can go back to the Darwin knock down drag out later.

re: #21 Mars Needs Neocons Hey y'all - posted this on the prior thread, but figure you may have missed it so I'm reposting it for you FWIW:
"Huh - well y'all could write to the DOD or if there are any Armed Forces Recruiting Stations near you, drop in and ask them (they'll probably bad mouth "the competition" but I'll bet money they know about "civilian" recruiters, at least in general if not that particular outfit).
And I do understand and empathize ENORMOUSLY with your wanting to stay home and be with all of your family.
I'm just plumb out of ideas for you, I'm afraid. I do know ONE THING FOR SURE - while you are looking for gainful employment, why not try working with some worthwhile charity (ies) for a while - it will help out folks who really need the help, increase or maintain your sense of self-worth, give you some "job satisfaction" that I NEVER got from a job - even jobs I loved and was IMHO excellent at doing - and hell, it really doesn't hurt the ole CV. And besides THAT, I know three people who found gainful employment while working for a charity! I worked for two larger charities (in terms of money we spent, number of people we helped) and had at least half a dozen job offers based ON HOW I DID MY JOB at the charity -and I'm not talking legal work either, just being able to organize, customize and watch every nickle and dime."

Who are we?

It's really a trick question, in that two parts comprise the answer:

1. What are we? - Answered scientifically;

2. Why are we? - Answered theologically.

These are dimensionally perpendicular; the facts of science are only proven independent of the beliefs of theology, and the strength of faith is its not not measured by objective facts.

As to "where are we," you'll have to ask Professor Heisenberg.

LOL, if I haven't given up after a year I don't plan on it now. I'm just afraid I'm about to go into a job I know I can't do, just to make the bills for now. I hope the hell I can keep my head together long enough to get a check or two.

Of course I mentioned a couple days back that I'm in a catch 22
If I get a job before the first then I have to start paying back my student loans. If not I can extend my deferment, but can't make my car payment. Plus if I get a job my rent goes up A LOT.

ROTFL!
Ya know, I actually do check my "perimeter" every night before I turn in and since I,uh, have to get up once and usually twice, I check it again! Been like this for 30+ years now.

Old habits die hard. I find myself on nightly patrol all the time....3-4 times a night I check the permeter for enemies. Course I also go the refrigerator for a pull of fresh OJ.

97 Spirit93  Tue, Aug 12, 2008 10:36:49pm

Schroedinger, Erwin! Professor of physics!
Wrote daring equations! Confounded his critics!
(Not bad, eh? Don't worry. This part of the verse
Starts off pretty good, but it gets a lot worse.)
Win saw that the theory that Newton'd invented
By Einstein's discov'ries had been badly dented.
What now? wailed his colleagues. Said Erwin, "Don't panic,
No grease monkey I, but a quantum mechanic.
Consider electrons. Now, these teeny articles
Are sometimes like waves, and then sometimes like particles.
If that's not confusing, the nuclear dance
Of electrons and suchlike is governed by chance!
No sweat, though--my theory permits us to judge
Where some of 'em is and the rest of 'em was."
Not everyone bought this. It threatened to wreck
The comforting linkage of cause and effect.
E'en Einstein had doubts, and so Schroedinger tried
To tell him what quantum mechanics implied.
Said Win to Al, "Brother, suppose we've a cat,
And inside a tube we have put that cat at--
Along with a solitaire deck and some Fritos,
A bottle of Night Train, a couple mosquitoes
(Or something else rhyming) and, oh, if you got 'em,
One vial prussic acid, one decaying ottom
Or atom--whatever--but when it emits,
A trigger device blasts the vial into bits
Which snuffs our poor kitty. The odds of this crime
Are 50 to 50 per hour each time.
The cylinder's sealed. The hour's passed away. Is
Our pussy still purring--or pushing up daisies?
Now, you'd say the cat either lives or it don't
But quantum mechanics is stubborn and won't.
Statistically speaking, the cat (goes the joke),
Is half a cat breathing and half a cat croaked.
To some this may seem a ridiculous split,
But quantum mechanics must answer, "Tough @#&!
We may not know much, but one thing's fo' sho':
There's things in the cosmos that we cannot know.
Shine light on electrons--you'll cause them to swerve.
The act of observing disturbs the observed--
Which ruins your test. But then if there's no testing
To see if a particle's moving or resting
Why try to conjecture? Pure useless endeavor!
We know probability--certainty, never.'
The effect of this notion? I very much fear
'Twill make doubtful all things that were formerly clear.
Till soon the cat doctors will say in reports,
"We've just flipped a coin and we've learned he's a corpse."'
So saith Herr Erwin. Quoth Albert, "You're nuts.
God doesn't play dice with the universe, putz.
I'll prove it!" he said, and the Lord knows he tried--
In vain--until fin'ly he more or less died.
Win spoke at the funeral: "Listen, dear friends,
Sweet Al was my buddy. I must make amends.
Though he doubted my theory, I'll say of this saint:
Ten-to-one he's in heaven--but five bucks says he ain't."

Hey Rose. I'm sorry about those sleepless nights - have you tried Ambien 12.5 CR (and yes I know that won't help with the underlying concerns you have, but it DOES help me, at least, to shut my damned mind off and get some sleep).

My damned mind is turning somersaults and it's simply not possible to shut it off.

1. I just found out that my abusive ex is shacking up with a 60 year old woman that he knew in the biblical sense for the last ten years of our marriage.

2. My beautiful 18 year old daughter has taken leave of her senses and has decided that she is in love with a 43 year old man.

3. I caught my 16 year old son smoking pot, again

4. I took a hard fall and sprained my ankle at work, and I'm currently on comp restrictions and painkillers with massive bruising, a softball sized ankle, and a damaged ligament.

5. I'm still having asthma attacks, and I feel like shit.

Sucks to be me, currently.

Hmmmm... the old rock & hard place routine I see...

When I graduated college (many years ago) I searched and searched.... did end up with a job offer (actually 2), took it.... and though I don't regret doing that somehow I feel as if I cheated myself by not doing what I wanted, and instead simply got a job because I needed the money. The job really wasn't what I thought I wanted to do, and in the end (after several years) that feeling never went away, though the job did provide security and money.

So, there is that tension....

If I were in your situation I wouldn't worry about the school loans (being late with a payment or two is hardly the end of the world, and what will they do - pull the knowledge out of your brain?)

VA around here doesn't have crap. Part of the moving problem is there is no possible way to move without income.

For my father it doesn't matter, his diabetes has taken him out of the equation completely for jobs, unless he can find the funding to go about one of his ideas to create a business. If he can find the way, he will either be an independent grant writer, or he wants to start up the Montana Safety Council again.

Personally I just want to be rich enough to own a nice cigar shop. But with the hostility MT has toward smokers it will probably be illegal to sell it in the next 5 years.

Geez Rose - I really don't know what to say (although your cancer not coming back is a DAMN good thing - and that's from someone who's cancer IS coming back or at least behaving a lot more aggressively). But that is exactly why I recommended Ambien 12.5 (although y'all ought to check with your doc - it's is a prescription med anyway - to see if it would interfere or not do well with your other meds) cause it does just, well, shut my brain down - totally stop thinking about everything that's bothering me and I do get to sleep for 6 or 7 hours; and getting some sleep does make it a little easier to deal with your other problems.

Here is my suggestions and observations about job hunting. I may have posted them before, but I think it needs repeating. I wrote this in April 2007.

---

Are you over 50 and looking for employment? If you are, you may have noticed that there are a lot of jobs available in your field, but they don’t want you. My favorite response from the interviewer is “You are very qualified, but you don’t fit our corporate culture.” What in the world does that mean? The only “corporate culture” I’m interest in is… “Hi… I’m the boss… here’s what I want you to do… thank you for doing it... here’s your paycheck… now go home.”

Let me translate this for you. What they are saying is… “You’re to old.” Federal law does not allow an employer to discriminate because of your age but it does happen… all the time. I am presently looking for work as a computer programmer. I have been working in Information Technology since the days that we had those little beads on those wire thingy’s. The consulting firms that I have been dealing with have confirmed my suspicions. Fitting the corporate culture means that you’re under 30, will work for half the pay, you can spend at least 55 or more hours a week at your workstation and you promise not to die in your cube.

So… if you are having the same problem as I am, I offer some advice to you. The next time you have a face-to-face interview with a prospective employer… try this.

1) Light up a joint.
2) Hum a song by “Artic Monkeys” and bang your head on the interviewers desk.
3) Wear a backpack.
4) Make sure there is a snowboard or skateboard in your backpack.
5) Don’t wear your MP3 player on your wrist.
6) Use the phrase ‘Vodka and Red Bull” at least 3 times.
7) If outside activities come up, don’t use the words “recreation center,” it’s a gym.
8) If the interviewer offers you a latte, don’t look puzzled, that’s coffee.
9) Don’t ask if their health plan covers limb replacement.
10) Never tell the interviewer that his/her mother dresses him/her nicely.

Will this help? Probably not… but it will make you feel better.

I think I'll consider the car sales job (pretty sure they'll offer it) and then I will apply for the recruiter position. With it paying between 30 and 35k a year I'll be in a better position, even if I only manage to make it a month or two.

I'm not a conspiracy tard, but I can't help but get the feeling that Obama is the perfect front man for someone else's agenda. I'm sure I sound stupid beyond definition for writing that, but I wonder......

I think I'll consider the car sales job (pretty sure they'll offer it) and then I will apply for the recruiter position. With it paying between 30 and 35k a year I'll be in a better position, even if I only manage to make it a month or two.

I was always told that it is easier to find a job if you already have one (works with women too.) So taking any job may be better than you think. (May work with women, too.)

One of the recruiters I dealt with while looking a few years back had seriously been told not to bring the company in question anyone over 38. Kinda freaked when I heard that over lunch - I'll be there in a few years.

Got one more for you - never call the interviewer son, kid, sport, tiger, etc. ad nauseum.

Keep going, it's going to be rough but you seem strong. Don't let anything stop you. And don't be afraid to seek out help if you need it. I was always wary of seeking psych help because I didn't think anything was wrong with me, then I found out you don't need to have something wrong, you just have to have a sounding board. (and yes, sometimes meds are a lifesaver).

Sorry if I don't make any sense, I'm really tired right now. I think it's time to sign off for the night.

When The Other Les says we more or less (Pun Intended) figured that out, he's also saying no, writing it does NOT make you sound retarded, Supreme.

You sound like a thinker, thinking in a new and unfamiliar thought-line, inasmuch as most people you've met in your life were pretty much WHAT and WHO they SAID THEY WERE! Right?

So meeting someone like Obambi is a challenge: HOW can THIS EMPTY SUIT actually get backing to become President of the most powerful nation in history? How? by being a cipher, for others to fund on condition they sink THEIR hooks into Obama, and he jump when they jerk their stringy-puppet thingies later...

It's all about the characters, though. If these kids just try to act "like" the originals, this will suck horribly.

if they re-invent the characters.. make the story more character driven, and "raw," we might be on to something.

I hope it's good. I don't know if they'd be able to corral all of the actors for a television series, so who knows what could become of it beyond a successful franchise. But tell me this guy isn't a dead-on Spock. The whole cast looks good. What happens when they open their mouths and utter their lines is another question.

One more linky, but a few more can be found here:
Obama: From ACORN Organizer To Audacious Hypocrite

Posted by Michael Eden on August 11, 2008
A lot of very ugly things about Barack Obama emerge from his entrance into politics in 1996.

It is a documented fact that Barack Obama’s days as a “community organizer” is media code to describe his service with ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now). ACORN currently is - and has for years routinely been - connected with and convicted of voter fraud. They have caught in state after state, city after city (just Google “ACORN” and “voter fraud” to get a sense of the scope) registering nonexistent voters as Democrats.

And Barack Obama was part of this profoundly un- and anti-democratic organization.

Just a little name dropping here in regards to the new Star Trek movie.

Scotty is being played by Simon Pegg (Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Spaced etc.). Well, his father, Richard Pegg, works for the theatre that I work at.

Richard just got finished directing our current show, Noel Coward's "Hay Fever." Richard is also one of our board of directors.

[Link: www.minersalley.com...]

During a production meeting for "Hay Fever" a few months ago, Richards cell phone rang, and her took the call. Well, you could tell that he was speaking to Simon.

And then we heard Richard say "Oh, get off the phone, this is one of Simon friends playing another joke for him."

It turned out that Simon was walking across the Dreamworks studio, and told his father that Steven Speilberg wanted to say hi and put someone on the phone.

Richard blew this person off, suspecting that his son was playing a little joke on him. And then we could tell that Simopn was back on the phone. After Richard hung up, we asked him what happened.

Right, it really was Speilberg.

I have to agree with you. Even my very early varieties that are supposed to be 45 days from ground to table are still just standing there spinning their wheels. We should have been eating them a month ago.

We had one very hot week back in mid May - up in the high 90s and low 100s. All the early garden stuff bolted straight off. We sent the kiddo off to camp the last week in June and first in July. At the time we were wishing that camp had been later in the summer because of the weather but it has turned out to be a good thing it wasn't, as it has rained nearly every day since. And been cold. Nobody has even been in the pool in a month.

my pool is hovering around 100*F, but that's because of the solar cover. not real refreshing when you're hot & sweaty from honey do's but i've only had to put water in it twice all summer, so no $900 utility bills from the city either.

Ours is hovering around 45 or so. Too refreshing. No big water bills for it because of all the rain, but I have had to repair it twice because of storm damage. Luckily it is an above ground.

that's gonna leave a mark, at least in the MIL demographic.

had some scrawny fu*k come to my door a few years back over the Blue Star in my window. he was out jogging from one of the local hotels. i was home with an infection instead of visiting a friend for the weekend like we'd planned. doorbell went off, i said "wtf, are we expecting anyone?" 2H6 said "no" so i opened up.

we fly the Flag, & the POW/MIA daily, and the star is in the front window 24/7.

he wanted to know what it was, so i tild him it was from WW2, and to me, represented all my friends and extendd family on active duty.

he mentioned that his nephew as a Marine, and i told him to thank him for me. then he went down moonbat road to bushville. after about 30 seconds, since i was running a fever and was less cordial than usual, i interrupted by asking him if he could see the asphalt over his shoulder. (the street).

he seemed confused, but eventually said yes. i simply told him "hit it."
he said "what" (still confused) and i said "hit it" again.

he just looked at me, so i told him in MILSPEC language that if he didn't get off my AO or that if he ever came back to it, that life would be Hobsian in nature for him.

laZardo ... I was confused, I'm mentally dredging up stuff I studied decades ago, & have not used or thought about since.

Fenway - what I was trying to recall does indeed relate to the Monarch butterfly, & to its imitator, the Viceroy ( not Emperor ) butterfly. Anyway - IIRC, the Monarch evolved in a way that causes it to taste like sh*t to predators. The Viceroy, instead of following that strategy, came up with a simpler solution - it looks like a smaller version of the Monarch, & predators avoid it, just as they avoid the Monarch, even though the Viceroy is lacking in the chemicals that cause its larger cousin to taste bad.

There are many similar examples of evolutionary "deception" out there that fit the same sort of pattern. The butterflies just happen to be the illustrative case that I once studied in school ...

Georgia: 50 Russian tanks enter Gori
Published: 08.13.08, 10:27 / Israel News

The head of Georgia's national security council says about 50 Russian tanks have entered the strategic city of Gori despite a cease-fire agreement.
Alexander Lomaia said Wednesday that the tanks entered the city about 9:45 am (5:45 GMT), about eight hours after Georgia accepted a cease-fire previously agreed by Russia to end the conflict that broke out last week. Independent confirmation of Lomaia's claim was not immediately possible.

Answer to your question is: no; the Chinese are perfect. And no disrespect to their young women - who are great athletes (and I hope chose the sport voluntarily).

With apologies to Charles, here's one of the first paragraphs:

With a fall off the beam here, a splat on the floor there and two more steps out of bounds Wednesday, the Americans all but personally handed the gold medals to the Chinese team and settled for silver.

Totally disrespectful. Nyah-nyah written all over it.

no, they didn't choose it: even the pawns @ Nothing But Crap admitted they were selected @ 3 or so, and "put into a machine" (their words).
they mentioned one girl who wanted out, and the family told her to suck it up. smart guess is that they would have lost whatever privileges they had, and been stuck with another mouth.

I share many of your sentiments, but would just say that many American gymnasts - especially the ones that make Olympians - also start at around age 3 (my daughter did; she's 12 and loves the sport still - not an Olympian, but she's good). And any kid will want to quit somewhere along the way - and parents should get them through those spots.

That said, it's yet another thing when the child is removed from the household and made a creature of the state. That's a whole 'nother thing. USSR did that, too.

Oh, THAT! Well, it varies by major, and the college where I'm going uses a very strict "track" flowchart. I get all my general education in the 1st year, design "fundamentals" (color theory, freehand drawing, the basics) in the 2nd, the 3rd is the real nitty-gritty and the 4th is Thesis Year.

Of course, since I'm a transfer, I ended up severely "derailed" and may end up taking a 5th year. =_= I'm also trying to put off this mandatory "NSTP" thing which consists of either community service or ROTC, mainly because of the horrific hazing stories I've heard regarding the latter.

That and if I graduate, I'll be starting from financial scratch when I go to take my Masters stateside...since the graduate's financial aid pool is drier than the Mojave...

TRIPOLI, Lebanon - A bomb ripped through a bus carrying civilians and members of the military during Wednesday morning rush hour in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, killing 18 people and wounding 40, security officials said.

The officials said the dead included 10 off-duty soldiers.

The bomb was planted on the side of a main street and went off as the bus passed by. The streets were filled with people heading to work, which contributed to the many casualties, the officials said.

Good morning lizards.
I was concerned to read recently that Iraq has run up a cash surplus of $79 billion which is apparently not being used to pay for the war or reconstruction efforts. If this is the way the USA is allowing the situation to proceed, then it begs the question of whether the assumed mantle of the world's only superpower has become a source of economic weakness rather than strength. The cost of single-handedly financing the costs of civilizing the third and developing world seem to be far too high for one nation to bear for very long. Is it perhaps time for the USA to download to Europe, China and Russia a much greater share of the economic and military burden of fighting the global war on Islamofascism?

Rightous Russian Peacekeeper's hold steadfast after the anounced ceasefire, sheathing their mighty swift sword despite the outrages of the Georgians...NOT

Eyewitnesses and fleeing residents said that with Russian tanks securing Gori, Ossetian militias and Russian cossacks began pillaging stores and homes. Some Georgians attempting to escape said they were told by irregulars to abandon their cars and valuables at gunpoint, and forced to walk toward Tbilisi. At least one vehicle of Western journalists was also seized at gunpoint by Russian-allied irregulars.

"The Russians are looting everything in sight. The whole city is full of marauders," said Roland Bochiashvili as he left Gori.

Hey TFK! You mean that the Mighty Pelosi (who is not allowing a yea or nay vote on off shore or domestic drilling) is buying shares in a new alternative energy company?

Did I read that right?

Unfortunately, Russian Army looting, robbery & rape is nothing new. The Germans literally cowered in fear. For that matter, Stalin deliberately sent in Tatar units to put the fear of God into the Germans of Berlin.

And, according to al-Jazeera, IT'S ALL OUR FAULT!

The US has had stern words for Russia over its military intervention in Georgia to back South Ossietian separatists, but many analysts say that the Bush administration must share the blame for the crisis.

Washington has formed a close bond with the government of Mikheil Saakashvili since he came to power in the 2003 'Rose Revolution,' offering military and economic aid and encouraging Georgia to join Nato.

Jon Sawyer, the director for the Pulitzer Centre for Crisis Reporting, said US politicians had encouraged their Georgian counterparts to think they had the backing of the US when Tbilisi decided to launch its attack on South Ossetia last week.

"The US has for several years now mishandled the situation in Georgia," he told Al Jazeera.

"The way that Mikheil Saakashvili has approached this [has been by] thinking that he could be an extension of the west, a partner of the United States."

"In many ways we have given him cause for thinking that, with the many visits to the United States, the talk of Georgia as a beacon for democracy."

Good morning all!

Just thought you might like to know that we can stop worrying about the whole energy problem:

On five fronts, too. One, we were nice to Sakaashvili. Two, we gave Georgia money. Three, we had the gall to try to ensure access to fuel without Russia. Four, we did the other two in Russia's back-yard. Five, we forced Russia to act by our helping establish Kosovo.

Live report on Fox right now - Steve Centeti counted with own eyes more than 40 Russian tanks moving into Gori in violation of truce.

Interesting note:

Republican Trio Backs Obama

The group, called Republicans for Obama, is led by two moderate Republicans -- James Leach, a former U.S. representative from Iowa, and Lincoln Chafee, a former U.S. senator from Rhode Island -- along with Rita Hauser, a prominent fund-raiser for President George W. Bush.

Gee, I wonder why Leach and Chafee are both 'former' office holders.

What gave me the shivers is that there are no forces between Gori and Tblisi.

How does Putin think he will affect regime change? Storming Tbilisi and bombing Sakaashvili? Arresting him? Who'll be the next president of Georgia? A Putin puppet? Force Georgia back into Russia?

My precious eldest grandchild's "other" family is Russian. You don't need to tell me about that one :(

On a funny note, she tells me that she wants to learn Russian. Why? So that she can understand what they say when they speak Russian in front of her. (Regular occurrence, yes they speak English, been here 20+ years)

All of that - plus. I have thought right along that the entire thing is a great big dare to the US in Iraq. Haven't seen a thing to change my mind either. I would be watching Syria and Iran like a hawk.
