Abkhazia in Russian Hands, Tbilisi in Danger

Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 2:08:51 pm PDT

Fox News reporters on the ground in Georgia are now saying that Russian troops are moving in on Tbilisi (Steve Harrigan said Russian forces were at one point within 12 miles of the city), and that Abkhazia is under the control of Russian-backed separatists.

Charles, I've been getting emails from Russia advocates, sent to my "photo fraud" address, claiming the photos of the invasion and damage to Georgia are all fake, and telling me to write an exposé about it!

Yup, that's exactly it. Except the photos are obviously not faked at all. Or, at best, are open to interpretation.

They're trying to use the power of the fauxtography "lever" to claim innocence. But the problem is, in 2006 there really was fakery going on in the Hezbollah War. In this instance, I haven't seen a single valid example.

I sense the emergence of a new concept:

Pelosi, We need Hate Crime Laws Protecting Political Beliefs

Regardless of whether this Arkansas shooting turns out to be politically motivated, it's become clear to me that our political climate is such that we need Hate Crime legislation for crimes perpetrated due to the political affiliation of the victims.
......
I think that as a community, we need to petition Nancy Pelosi to bring this before Congress, to make it safe for Democrats to be loud and proud, and to point out the chasm that exists between Democratic and Republican supporters in terms of violence.

In short, if Democrats want our support and we want good people with families to be running for office, we all need to have enhanced protections against the violence inherent in the Rightwing's political platform.

During the period of the Cold War (1947-1991 or thereabouts), there were 11 U.S. elections. The Republican candidate won 7 of them (64%). It should be noted that of the four Democrats who managed to get elected, two (Truman and Kennedy) were hardcore, anti-Communist hawks, who succeeded in getting to the right of their Republican rivals on many national security/foreign policy issues during the election. (Remember Kennedy and the "missile gap").

The other two Democrats who won during the Cold War benefited from extraordinary circumstances beyond their control. In 1976, of course, Lyndon Johnson rode a wave of public sympathy in the wake of the Kennedy assassination, while in 1976 the tailwinds of Watergate, the Nixon pardon, the post-Vietnam hangover, and the mid-'70s recession carried Carter to a meager 2% victory over Ford.

Absent extreme outside circumstances such as these, Cold War-era elections pitting hawkish Republicans versus dovish Democrats tended to result in one-sided blow-out/landslides. (See Eisenhower-Stevenson in '56, Nixon-McGovern in '72, and Reagan-Mondale in '84). Lesson: when there is a clear, confirmed foreign threat out there, the American people just do not trust the Democrats to keep them safe.

What does that mean for 2008? Well, thanks to the success of the surge, Iraq (which many Democrats had depended upon to loft them to victory this fall) has receded as a campaign issue. In fact, the dramatic decline in violence there makes McCain look incredibly wise and prescient. Meanwhile, the Russian bear is resurgent, and baring its fangs and claws for all the world to see. If we look at the historical record above, that cannot possibly help Obama, probably the most dovish, liberal, inexperienced candidate ever put forward by a mainstream U.S. political party.

Bottom line: Vlad Putin (and his sockpuppet Medvedev) have given a major political contribution to John McCain; the type that can't be accounted for even by the McCain-Feingold legislation...

My $.02 worth.

The big question is what will this Georgia-Russia conflict breed. The Baltics, Poland, and Ukraine have made noise in Russia's direction already, and the Turks sure as hell aren't happy about this.

Never thought the Causcuses would be such a freaking tinder box. Spent more time concentrating on the Middle East south of there.

You know the Kurds are watching this carefully... they want to secede from three different nations. Iran is held together more with intimidation than allegiance, and Pakistan could rupture into a full scale civil war at any time.

The entire region is a tinderbox. The borders should have been redrawn following ethnic lines way back at the end of WWII. The region will remain unstable until those lines are changed.

105 eon  Wed, Aug 13, 2008 2:35:44pm

Possibly OT;

How is this likely to affect the present *lack* of debate in Congress over domestic energy production? This PM, I noticed that gasoline prices across the street from my home have jumped from $3.59.9 to $3.75.9/gallon.

With the Georgian pipeline in Russian hands, and the other pipeline from the region going through Iran, Europe's primary source of petroleum will be in the hands of a regime' that is , in the words of a recent New Yorker article (on Herodotus' History, describing the Persian wars), "An authoritarian state run by a possibly unstable dictator- the nightmare of liberal governments to the present day."

My guess is that this will finally make clear to anyone who is paying attention that energy is a national security issue. Which is unlikely to benefit those whose "policy" is to tell the American people to "drive small cars and wait for the wind".

As for Russia itself, this saddens me. The Russian people have been afflicted throughout their history with governments of disconnected aristocrats (the boyars), tyrants (Ivan the Terrible), ineffectual nobles (Tsar Alexander the Last), fanatics (Lenin, Stalin, & Co.), and now apparently ambitious kleptocrats (Putin & Medvedev, LLC).

They deserve better. I just don't think they're going to get it any time soon.

cheers (sort of)

Two possibilities;

1. Georgian government did it to protect their forces from Russian force-on-force attacks (they can't hit you if they can't find you).

2. Russian government did it to prevent defenders from deducing troop movements (less likely- I assume the Georgian Army has good maps of their own territory and has gamed invasions on basis of likely axes of advance vs. likely objectives, etc.).

Best guess is that the Georgians did it themselves. The modern-day equivalent of burning the maps in the HQ before the enemy captures it.

::shrugs:: The whole area around the Black Sea has been a tinderbox for centuries, if not millennia. It's just that most of the shit hitting the fan lately has come from the west and south.

If the Turks get sufficiently annoyed at the Russians, they can always close the Dardanelles. Of course, that might make Putin threaten Istanbul....

One of the reasons that the Turks joined the Central Powers in WW 1 was a longstanding dispute with Russia over Bessarabia, the area that encompasses parts of what is now Romania (and was formerly part of the Ottoman Empire). Plus another long-standing spat over the Caucasus, which resulted in open warfare from 1870 to 1885, the most notable feature of same being the siege of Plevna in 1877, in which the Turkish Army demolished a Russian force of over a quarter-million infantry with a defense force about 1/10 that size, thanks to having Winchester repeaters while the Russians had single-shot breechloaders.

I find myself wondering just how nervous the government in Istanbul is getting right now. I also wonder (as a previous poster stated) if anyone there has noticed how close U.S. SpecOps forces are to the AO, and if they are already telling Washington, "Do not attempt to fly over Turkish territory to insert" same. (Rather like France and Spain did with USAF 'Varks during Operation DIABLO CANYON in the Reagan Administration.)

re: #247 eastvillageinfidel

A web crawler (also known as a web spider, web robot, or—especially in the FOAF community—web scutter[1]) is a program or automated script which browses the World Wide Web in a methodical, automated manner. Other less frequently used names for web crawlers are ants, automatic indexers, bots, and worms.[2]

This process is called web crawling or spidering. Many sites, in particular search engines, use spidering as a means of providing up-to-date data. Web crawlers are mainly used to create a copy of all the visited pages for later processing by a search engine that will index the downloaded pages to provide fast searches. Crawlers can also be used for automating maintenance tasks on a website, such as checking links or validating HTML code. Also, crawlers can be used to gather specific types of information from Web pages, such as harvesting e-mail addresses (usually for spam).

A web crawler is one type of bot, or software agent. In general, it starts with a list of URLs to visit, called the seeds. As the crawler visits these URLs, it identifies all the hyperlinks in the page and adds them to the list of URLs to visit, called the crawl frontier. URLs from the frontier are recursively visited according to a set of policies.

I don't know if they would take our personnel hostage. Like Mandy pointed out, Sec. Rice will be there. I have no military knowledge but read earlier on another thread that these flights would be escorted by fighter planes. Wouldn't they stick around to provide CAP?

Fast-movers can't stay over the LZ very long without tanking (inflight refueling). Also, there's the problem that if the "Red" force gets in among the "Blue" before TacAir can get steel on target, then any attempt to take out the threat force risks harming your own people on the ground.

The least-worst option in this sort of situation is a hard perimeter and a Zero Zone* around it.

*Zero Zone= Anything moving into the established area is terminated on general principles, accepting the risk of target misidentification and a Blue-on-Blue.

Glad to know its a done deal Nancy. 85 days.

You do realize that one of the person's who is responsible for the rejection of both the Ukraine's & Georgia's bid into NATO is currently negotiating Georgia's ceasefire?

What the Russian's are doing is showing the world and specifically its former clients - by our own inaction - that our(US) word means nothing, is worthless.

This is what happens when leftist 5th columnists succeed in gaining control of the media (not to mention other institutions). These become propaganda machines with two messages that are repeated continuously: "Bush is bad", and "America is wrong." The first message is a recent one, but the second is a perennial favorite of our domestic enemies.

As a result the strength and resolve of the nation has been sapped away. Americans have been bullshitted into not believing in ourselves. Americans have been conned into feeling that we should be meek and repentant for all of our supposed misdeeds.

The end result is a nation with nothing to say and nothing to show when one of our allies is invaded.

It is high time that our domestic enemies be given the boot. We are at war. A war that is not being fought in foreign lands under strange skies but right here in our own backyard with people who are supposed to be one of us.

Right now...we're losing.

I doubt it. He's ex-KGB (pronounced Kah Gey Bay in Russian, BTW). Gambling isn't his style; if he's playing for high stakes (as seems to be the case here), he must be pretty sure that he's got the high cards.

Based on the correlation of forces, my SWAG is that he and Medvedev concluded that the risk was more public relations and possibly sanctions than any actual retaliation. And of course, any UN Security Council action could be vetoed by Russia, which is a permanent member of same.

In the same position, I would consider the risks of blowback low to medium, which means acceptable from the aggressor's POV, compared to the possible reward.

But not the big honcho Democrats in congress. Seems that since the Unions seem to be failing, they have to be saved by any means necessary. Hum, kinda remind you of another failing system trying to resurrect itself by bullying tactics? Putin and the Democrats, perfect together!

How strange would it be to root for the Turks over the Russians were it to come to the Russians attacking Turkey?

Not strange at all. Very unlikely though:

Well, this is all being blown out of proportion, anyway. Just ask Obama.

Can't seem to find him. Possibly on a vacation somewhere and afraid to say anything so he doesn't appear to be more ill informed than he already is?

Honestly, if he actually did say something, he runs the risk of pi**ing off half of his base voters. They see this as a political ploy by either (pick one):

#1 President Bush arranged this to stay in office indefinitely and suspend elections.

#2 President Bush (or Karl Rove) arranged this so Senator McCain would win the election.

Your choice.....either one works for the moonbats that think conservatives always resort to violence to solve their problems.

The Senator's goal was to be tough and smart, and so when the action happened on Thursday, he immediately called for a ceasefire, condemned the unwarranted use of force by Russia. It was a bad crisis for the world. It required tough words, but also a smart approach to call on the international community to step in -- and I'm very, very happy that the senator's request for a ceasefire has been complied with.

Maybe unlikely, but a theory anyway.

Historically in the Soviet Army maps were classified. Only the unit commander had the orders and maps for the unit. The line grunts got very limited information for a limited time frame. Hence the Sov Army was vuneralbe to have it's commanders whacked. Kill the unit commander and that unit was out of the fight because no one else new what to do or where to go.

I don't know how much of that exists, but given the structure and make up of the Russian Army, I doubt it's changed much. Unless the individual soldier has local knowledge, if this Lt. get whacked he's lost but tactically and geographically.

re: #424 jcm

Historically in the Soviet Army maps were classified. Only the unit commander had the orders and maps for the unit. The line grunts got very limited information for a limited time frame. Hence the Sov Army was vuneralbe to have it's commanders whacked. Kill the unit commander and that unit was out of the fight because no one else new what to do or where to go.

I don't know how much of that exists, but given the structure and make up of the Russian Army, I doubt it's changed much. Unless the individual soldier has local knowledge, if this Lt. get whacked he's lost but tactically and geographically.

Not only that, but the maps they did publish had deliberate errors.

Turns out the CIA had better maps of Russia than the Russians did.

And given the CIA's failings, that's saying something.

re: #11 Charles

There's a very serious propaganda effort going on. I've gotten some of those emails too, telling me to look at photos they say are faked or staged.

There's a saying in Finland, which make without thought in the right circumstances and in English it would be a comment on a situation that says:

That is shit
or
That is crass
or
That is disgusting
or
That is gross

and so on

I heard it made in casual conversation some years ago and in Swedish it says:

Det var Ryskt

Meaning:

That was Russian

Ask any Finn.

Last I've seen, Belarus is aligned with Russia. This, IMHO, is first and foremost what makes Poland very nervous. It's a dagger pointed at Warsaw.

Belarus wants more of Poland. I already has a big chunk of pre-WWII Poland that Stalin didn't give back after The NAZI-SOVIET invasion in 1939.

That is what happens when one has no cards left to play!

If you think the US has no cards to play, I hope the Russkies are as ignorant as your are. The game isn't over in the first inning.

re: #353 Nevergiveup

I was just listening to FOX news and they were talking about a bill the Democrats are pushing to get rid of the secret ballot for Union elections? Even George McGovern is against it. But not the big honcho Democrats in congress. Seems that since the Unions seem to be failing, they have to be saved by any means necessary. Hum, kinda remind you of another failing system trying to resurrect itself by bullying tactics? Putin and the Democrats, perfect together!

Secret ballot = mob rule

re: #189 Sharmuta

How strange would it be to root for the Turks over the Russians were it to come to the Russians attacking Turkey?

Not very strange, as another commentor said. The Turks aided us in Korea, and they fought the Russians in WWI (which is why the nominally joined the Central Powers). There's centuries of bad blood there.

I'm waiting for the lefties to say that the Georgia Russian offensive was a plot established by GW and Putin to help elect John McCain. Why? McCain would do better if there were Russian / U.S. tensions. Vlad and Dubya were seen at the Olympics shmoozing and had their private talks.

Obama -- the 2nd Coming, will BLESS them, and appeal to their intellectual senses for a peaceful outcome. Afterall the dolt publicly supported a U.N Security Council (the Holy Sanctuary) to pass a "resolution" to condemn the Russian actions. Later a staff member reminded him that Russia has veto powers in the Security Council. The idea of that manipulator as Commander in Chief given the current world tension is frightening.

P.S. --- If I lived in Taiwan, I would be packing my bags about now. Especially if Obama, who will like play the Carter-like role of appeaser on the world stage, wins in November. China is watching this all very closely. They are on deck and as an earlier post said. It's the first inning.

Yesterday our official state broadcaster reported that there are teams of investigators on the spot in Georgia looking for the evidence of georgian "war crimes". Oddly the first example they brought up was the artillery damage to the russian military peacekeeping base and the second was a scene of a firefight between georgian troops and SO militia, don't know whether they mentioned uncombatants since i turned it off.

re: #168 Steffan

That would be an act of war. I'm not sure Turkey wants to declare war
on Russia. I'm not sure the US wants that to happen either as a NATO
member making a unilateral declaration of war on a non-NATO member
would make other NATO members rethink their treaty obligations.

There was a time that the Russian army was in Adrianople and the only
thing that stopped it from pushing the Turks completely out of Europe
was a threat from Britain.

Listen mate. i actually live in the real world where one does analysis instead of just mouthing off. Georgia is a LONG way away from US formations. The airfields are under russian gun barrels and the US doesn't want to start a hot war with russia just now. The US is a tad busy elsewhere if you hadn't noticed!

Please stop hyperventilating mate and turn down the jingoistic BS a bit. You're just making a fool of yourself.

In the meantime Condi will assault with a dozen sternly worded remonstrations and fire off a magazine of complaints to the UN.

You STILL don't get it I'm sure Shay41. This is a military demonstration. It is intended for poland. The Czech Republic and the Balts. not to forget the central Asian Republics who having thrown their hands in with you yanks suddenly find that the US' cupboard is bare and they have only the support of kind words.

Russia is back in the game mate. The sooner that you accept it the sooner you might come up with a proper plan to do something about it1 In the meantime i'd suggest that you lay off the 'terps' and take a cold shower and calm down a tad.

Think first THEN act if you can!

If you can't then plan for the day when you can act and do it right!

Please no more 'good ol' boy BS.

You make me embarrassed for you!
