Robots Crawling All Over Us

Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 3:53:12 pm PDT

In the past few hours, I’ve discovered and blocked at least six web crawlers trying to go through the site and download everything as quickly as possible, in violation of the rules in our robots.txt file. Two of them seemed to be focusing on the posts related to the Georgia crisis.

Pretty unusual activity for a Wednesday afternoon.

Sounds like the Russian hackers have moved on from DOS attacks against Georgian servers onto spying on the rest of the world (or just the US) so as to plan out the next cyberwar attack.

Cop claims to have body of 'Bigfoot'

A Clayton County Police officer, and his friend, claim to have the body of a Bigfoot.

The animal -- a legendary, hairy hominid that supposedly lives in remote forests -- is said to be dead, frozen, and "shocking."

Matthew Whitton, a 28-year-old, who has been with the department for six years, and Rick Dyer, a 31-year-old former correctional officer, posted a video on youtube.com, last week, claiming to have the male Bigfoot corpse, alleged evidence that the much-hunted and often hoaxed monster, is a real, living species.

How did the Saddleback Civil Forum on the Presidency come about?

On July 2nd, after efforts by another organization failed to get the two candidates together, Dr. Rick Warren personally contacted the candidates out of his relationship with both men, and invited them to Saddleback's Civil Forum for August. Both agreed to participate on two conditions: 1) that Dr. Warren ask all the questions -- instead of a panel, or from the audience -- and 2) that it be open for all national media to cover as news or carry via live video feed from Saddleback, as opposed to co-sponsorship by any one network or outlet, as was done during the primary campaigns.

Apologies for the outright ignorance, but some questions:

1. Is ICANN located in the US?
2. If in the US, don't they effectively control all web domain/address names?
3. if both above are true, wouldn't this make the US as economically threatening as the largest oil-producing country in that the US could shut an entire nation out of their own web sites via domain name shutdown (like an oil producing nation could shut down an oil supply source)?

Try not to flame me - just curious and not really informed :)

193 Kenneth  Wed, Aug 13, 2008 5:22:23pm

Choose

Although analysts may debate how far Putin decides to go on Georgia will go, its actions are indistinguishable from a campaign that intends to go “all the way”.

The US decision to send a military airlift into Tsibilsi and dispatch a naval convoy bringing humanitarian supplies sends a signal eerily reminiscent of the 1948 Berlin Airlift. The use of military and naval assets simultaneously lays the framework for future action with the same vehicles. Like Putin’s cooing threats, the humanitarian effort is intentionally ambiguous. Vladimir Putin has told America to “choose” between Russia and Georgia. He was really asking the United States to choose between conflict and appeasement. By sending a mini-Berlin airlift into Georgia, Bush is giving no answer, only repeating the question: Mr. Putin, choose — choose what comes next.

The USN doesn’t have to control the Black Sea. It simply has to partly deny it to the Russians by making it a doubtful place. Then insurance rates and risk interest premiums will make Putin wish he had never been born.

Wolfie, just do it! Can't hide too much with the SPY feature but everyone wishes you well, so go for it. I don't know much, but I'll help with more specifics anyway I can.

Russia has overplayed their hand. If they pull back now, they will keep Ossetia. If they keep pushing, Georgia will suffer but the Russians risk loosing everything.

A pair of Burke's effectively could deny them the Black Sea, sea denial isn't control.

In violation of whose rules? Putinia makes her own rules. You tawk trash about Putinia, you get robotted for starters, and then poloniumed if you're a major pain.

These guys don't play nice. But they cannot play dirty everywhere all the time or they tip their hand.

Charles,

What are the IP addresses? We could geo-fix the IPs to a country (not that's necessarily a true indication of the source, but it might help).

You've put so many cool automated features on this blog, can you figure out a way to identify a possible bot and slooow down the info that's sent to it? (I say slow down instead of boot off because it'll just try again if you boot it off but if you slow down the tranmission it'll never finish).

The Russians are doing the crawling of blogs because they want to measure public sentiments against by harvesting thoughts on the Subject of Georgia. They will use this data to do gauge further responses if they escalate in Georgia. It's kinda like real time feeler gauge to push this crisis to the limit. This is only a guess on my part but this is the way a Russian dictator might think. He will push this thing to the edge until someone makes a real move.

In the evenings, I have terrible problems getting to this site.

Last night I had to give up and shut down my puter and reboot, as my puter was doing some very strange things trying to get here, grrrr. I had to give up in the end.
Initially, the only way onto this site was via the 'cached' route and I had to choose to read the 'text only' route, tried to refresh, it wasn't having it, and then threw up 12 shuddering blank web pages.

This morning, before going to work, had no problems at all. All rather weird.

All these probs seem to have started the day I was diverted to another site, which btw hasn't happened since. (in the UK btw)

Meant to say, it is as if something or someone is doing their best to stop me viewing this site.

Bfn, take care all.

I agree that it looks suspiciously like a soviet (oops) Russian federation operation against all pro Georgia (on our minds) websites.
That would probably exclude most demonut blogs.

I think Pres Bush while setting a minimum line on Georgia, is missing the boat. I believe he should have sent the Sixth Fleet to the Black Sea and told the G-7 leaders that he is going to Tblisi to day and to urge the leaders of those nations to join with him in solidarity (solidarnosc) with Pres. Shakhashvili there in Georgia, and dare the Russkies to try to arrest or depose the gov't while he and the other leading western leaders are there! Then he would put the question to the Russians, are you for the USA and the West or are you for raping and ravaging the Georgian people?

14 Aug:
I had terrible trouble on LGF last night - everything was sooo slow loading and then it seized up. In the end had to get off the net. Today no problems. I wonder if it had anything to do with Charles' problems.

Putin's a *land shark* and a brutal one at that.
Russia is trying to play games and put up a high moral front (rather like our islamists) but he's not very good at it. Russia doesn't do subtle. Like all totalitarian ideologies (religious or not) they fear freedom of speech and thought like the plague. They want to shut down any info coming out of Georgia, not just because they don't want people to know troop movements (which are going to contradict what PR the Russians are putting out) but its's also going to eff up their attempts at painting the Georgians as genocidal killers. We have no way of knowing what went on in South Ossetia but I don't think the Georgians have the military clout to *trash* a whole region. Considering that the S Ossetians are in cahoots with Moscow I'm not inclined to believe a word they say. We will have to wait and see. They seem to think that they can put out any old rubbish and we'll believe it. WRONG

So, if the Russian trolls are peeking:
Your bad attempts at justifying the invasion of a sovereign state aren't working. It's not that hard to see through you. You're being obvious. You can't take the moral high ground when you're bombing residential areas and allowing S Ossetian and Chechnyan (?sp) attack dogs to run amok in Georgia. It is you that is trying to destroy a country and interfere with our oil and gas supplies. We don't take kindly to that sort of behaviour.
I'm British and not long ago you threatened to nuke Europe without so much as a by your leave - that puts you very firmly on my Shit List. Sit on it, and swivel!
PS the Georgian vollyball ladies spanked your team. I laughed my socks off. Delicious!
Grrrrrrrrrr

Sorry to whinge on about this problem again, but have just discovered, the problems I am getting only seem to be when I try and get to this site via Google.

When I had problems before (with being redirected to another site), I deleted the link in my favorites folder and used Google to get here. Have had nothing but problems since. Tried to get to Lgf a few times this morning via Google route, to no avail, have just tried Yahoo and got here straight away! I wonder if anyone else has been having the same problem?
