World Gone Nuts Open Thread

Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 5:16:21 pm PDT

Sheesh, what a day. I feel like the Soviet Army has been marauding through my psyche, putting their muddy boots on my couch, and laying waste to my peace of mind.

Here’s a crazy world open thread...

Sick sad world, man. Sick, sad world

It's all overblown, Charles! He said so Himself. Just keep focusing on His message of Hope and Change.

It's an old Chinese curse: May you live in interesting times.

So therefore I blame the Cjinese for this state of affairs.

Sorry for the bad day, Charles. Have a nice glass of wine, or a great bit of scotch and take a deep breath.

After all, tomorrow is another day!

And I've been told that the commies were gone. I was nuts for chopping on them. See I was right. They just stopped for a while cause they ran out of money. Now THEY are drilling- getting rich on oil, and going back to being evil assholes. Damn liberal socialist marxists demorats will be the death of us all.

Never trust the Russians....gotta give em at least three more generations before they get their shit straight....it's like the hippies that control congress now....gotta wait for that generation to die off so that more sensible (hopefully, but hey...no one learns from history!) people can take the lead.

11 HelloDare  Wed, Aug 13, 2008 5:22:10pm

Imagine if Obama were president now. Talk about sheesh...

12 Tigger2005  Wed, Aug 13, 2008 5:22:14pm

I hate Russian apologists.

Weaselly, wormy, cowardly, traitorous useful idiots.

Lately, I've been in the process of hardening my heart and cutting myself off emotionally from people I used to consider friends. I hate doing this but for my sanity I have to. I can't be friends with people who are informed about what's going on in the world but are still voting Democrat. They are traitors. I don't want to hate them so the only alternative is having no feelings for them at all.

It's sad but that's the way it is.

13 Junior  Wed, Aug 13, 2008 5:22:32pm

So how long before Putin takes on Ukraine? Isn't the NATO vote on them scheduled for December?

But along those lines, my question is this - if it is really about NATO - did Putin really have to do this? Germany and France will veto any attempt because Putin has their balls by his i-supply-your-energy fist. So really, why do this because of their attempts to get into NATO when they never would make it in?

The main reason must be oil and/or Putin just really wanting the old Soviet states back under his control...

Ot

Want to get this in early.
I know that the results of this question and answer session with both
the obammamessiah .. B. Obama and John McCain will be the most revealing 'forum' that will be held. Period

Saturday night, 5-7 pm live and in Person at Saddleback Church in
Lake Forest, California.
Both candidates have agreed to attend!

more information available if interested in this forum
i.e.
How did the Saddleback Civil Forum on the Presidency come about?

On July 2nd, after efforts by another organization failed to get the two candidates together, Dr. Rick Warren personally contacted the candidates out of his relationship with both men, and invited them to Saddleback's Civil Forum for August. Both agreed to participate on two conditions: 1) that Dr. Warren ask all the questions -- instead of a panel, or from the audience -- and 2) that it be open for all national media to cover as news or carry via live video feed from Saddleback, as opposed to co-sponsorship by any one network or outlet, as was done during the primary campaigns.

Obama's take:
"Let me be clear: we seek a future of cooperative engagement with the Russian government, and friendship with the Russian people. We want Russia to play its rightful role as a great nation – but with that role comes the responsibility to act as a force for progress in this new century, not regression to the conflicts of the past. "

Who is he trying to kid? You think they care a whit what this pompous blowhard has to say about their affairs? They'd shoot him in the head just to shut him up.

You have any doubt that the Iranians are crazy-foolish, that's it. They're hellbent on carrying out Ahmadinejad's apocalyptic visions, and will do anything to achieve it - photo edit missile launches? Check. Puff academic achievements? Check. Claim new technologies for subs and missiles? Check.

re: #40 MilkOfMalfeasance

I think the most interesting part of the entire article it is the "painting the US into a corner" analogy... imo both sides are being painted into a corner and that, to me, means that there will be more fighting before it is all said and done...

Properly and quickly done the Russians could find the cream of their military trapped in a very, very bad place for them.

With very, very vulnerable supply lines the Russian forces could easily find themselves trapped without reinforcement/resupply against a growing OPFOR of Georgian and possible other "humanitarian aid escorting" troops later down the line. As mentioned on other threads; bomb the mountain roads to make them impassable. Add to this making all of Georgia a no fly zone, except for US/Allied aircraft (especially tank killers with an agenda) and it could turn quickly from well planned/executed operation to utter fiasco...

Here's something else to keep in mind. A generation ago, you had Soviet experts saying that the Soviets were here to stay and that they could keep up with the US economically. None of them saw the fall of the Soviet Union coming.

Now, we've got Russia experts cropping up all over the place saying more or less the same thing. Some said that you have to watch out for Russia's ambitions against the former Soviet republics, but few paid heed - and one has to wonder whether the CIA was once again asleep at the switch (they didn't catch the fall of the Soviet Union either).

What else are they missing, is a big problem, and isn't going away. Each time there's a new crisis - the CIA and other intel reorients to meet the threat - but then overlooks old ones, or areas of the world that aren't on the radar.

That's got serious potential for blunders where American lives can be at stake because of failure to pick up signals that something is afoot.

108 RTLM  Wed, Aug 13, 2008 5:42:12pm

And Rush made a good point this morning re: China's perspective on the US/NATO defense of Georgia. They're thinking about how many friends Taiwan would really have if they decided to invade.

It was a good idea to send in the Military Airlift. Keep the sorties going for the long term.

And I've been told that the commies were gone. I was nuts for chopping on them. See I was right. They just stopped for a while cause they ran out of money. Now THEY are drilling- getting rich on oil, and going back to being evil assholes. Damn liberal socialist marxists demorats will be the death of us all.

This is the problem. They are not communists. They are something far worse.

The old communists were bound by ideology. They just kept doing the same things over and over and over, the definition of insanity, even as the Soviet economy kept sinking deeper and deeper in the muck. Communism was really just their tool for conquest, but they were stupid enough to actually try to make it work, and when it became undeniable that it didn't, it lost its appeal---for a little while anyway.

Even the German Nazis were bound by ideology. A lot of them believed their own crap. Among other things this cost them their most brilliant Jewish minds.

Putin is KGB. Nothing more, nothing less. He wants nothing but power and control.

He is a man like O'Brien from "1984."

When you accept that Hare's statistic that 1 in 25 people are psychopaths, the world is not crazy. It is just sometimes that the psychopaths align in the same way the planets do. I will note there is some dispute that the 4% level may be high, but I highly recommend his books like "Snakes In Suits", etc. As for what would Jimmy Carter do, I would have to go through my DSM-IV casebook, etc. on the topic of narcissism syndrome. Dabama (sic) seems to have the same affliction. All I know is I want off the grid, these assholes do not know economics, game theory, or which way to piss when the wind is blowing. Right now I am concentrating on psycholaths and schizophrenia. A bit off topic for a guy with a PhD in course 6 from MIT but what the hell. Now that I am retired and attempt to trade my own account, religion and psychology are probably the best use of time.

I have felt for some time now that there is an economic war being waged against the U.S.A., and that our government either doesn't recognize this or is afraid to admit it. Who is waging the war? Probably our usual enemies - China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela ... and maybe Saudi Arabia. Those of us who live in the northern states who heat with oil are going to get pounded badly this winter. That will eat into what little disposable income most people have and put further stress on the housing market when mortgage payments are delayed. Most of this will take place after the General Election, so people will not be able to express their frustration with their votes.

Good point Dr. Shalit. Not to take away from the current actions against the Georgians, but the Russians to some degree are showing their "hand" militarily (I hope). I would think tactics, logistics, radar signatures & any counter measures, etc.. that the Russians are using during their operations, would be gleaned by our & others military analyst types. Could be some useful information in any future operations against those who have purchased Russian hardware (Iran perhaps?). Just a thought.

249 Steffan  Wed, Aug 13, 2008 7:27:13pm

I ran across something that puts the MSM's "Grim Milestones" into proper context.

In the Afterword to To The Last Man, Jeff Shaara wrote of the legacy of "The War To End All Wars." To paraphrase:

In the four years of WWI, 1914-1918, nearly ten million men died. That works out to something over five thousand casualties every day of the war. An entire generation of young men disappeared from the face of the earth.

American troops were engaged in combat for six months, May-November 1918. More than fifty thousand died. Roughly the same number died in Vietnam, over a considerably longer period -- 14 years. More than one third of all pilots who reported for service with the American Air Service (now the USAF) died.

It was, of course, anything but the war to end all wars. German resentment over the Treaty of Versailles sparked an even worse war within a generation.

Before WWI, the German attitude toward war was that it was pretty much a natural condition -- wars were inevitable, and should be dealt with as expeditiously as possible.

It certainly seems like Putin is trying to revive that attitude.

Wow, that's some seriously paranoid shit.

The "economic war" you speak of is millions of people being lifted up out of poverty. As people get wealthier, they consume more. Sorry to burst your bubble, but we don't have a G-d given right to cheap oil.

The real problem is that we have millions of selfish slobs who live irresponsibly, and who demand that the government subsidize their lifestyles. Over half of federal government spending is for mandatory entitlement programs. And yet, millions of people keep demanding even more free shit.

Also, we consume too much and save too little. That can't continue forever.

How ridiculous is the democrat party?

With the Obama campaign saying McCain's statements about Georgia are "aggressive" and "belligerent" and "very aggressive" and "very belligerent" at that, it might be time to remind ourselves of Harry Jaffa's words, written for Barry Goldwater once upon a time: "Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."

I think it should be noted that nothing McCain has said is as aggressive as the actions of Russia. It strikes me odd right now to complain of aggressive words in the defense of democracy rather than condemning aggressive actions against a democracy.

Pretty lame.

The Olympics are biased in favour of the USA, Russia & China.

The USA, Russia & China are confederations of individual states, provinces what have you, but they are up against individual nation states.

To get a grip on this disparity, imagine the State of Kentucky was competing against China.

Well that's the reality of most countries in the world.

Just remember mate that it's the duty of one's mates to put him right when he screws up. If one's mates can't tell you that you have cocked it up then nobody can and you never learn from your mistakes.

The US have provoked the Russians, pure and simple. For the past 15 years the US have rubbed the Russian's noses in it, for no better reason than they could.

now when the Russians push back and the US is heavily engaged elsewhere the US will have to take it like a man.

It was all so unnecessary too. I think they put something in the water inside the Belt-way that drives all the denizens there a little crazy. Maybe they need mate to tell them when they have cocked it up. Maybe too they wouldn't listen!

EVERYONE has spheres of influence. The US certainly has and so do the Russians. Time to grow up and see the real-politik mate.

Shit flows BOTH ways mate. Just remember that next time you feel like running off at the mouth.

re: #260 whatdafuq (great nic) ...

are your friends trying to "Americanize" the pronunciation of Ossetia? Of course, they would know better than I would :)

But my information comes from dictionary.com. Which, BTW is an awesome site. It allows you to do instant translations from many languages into English. This is very handy when major news breaks in another country and you need a quick translation to English.
