Saudi Arabia Off the Hook for 9/11

Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 9:28:53 am PDT

These are the kinds of court rulings that put big smiles on the faces of our friends the Saudis: Court: Saudi Arabia not liable in 9/11 attacks.

A federal appeals court today rejected lawsuits by victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks against Saudi Arabia and senior members of the Saudi royal family, alleging that they helped foster al-Qaeda and other Islamist terrorist groups.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, ruling in Manhattan, said Saudi Arabia and members of its royal family were protected from being sued because the State Department had not officially designated the desert kingdom as a supporter of terrorism.

Under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, foreign governments are immune from such lawsuits unless the State Department finds in advance that they had actively supported terrorist groups.

Lawyers for the kingdom argued that there was no credible evidence that senior Saudi officials had any knowledge of terrorism activities by the charities or that they intended for the charities as vehicles for funding al-Qaeda.

The State Department needs to wake up and smell the jihad.

How about making that finding now so that any future AQ death will result in Saudi liability.

They can't be sued.

Problem is, in the Magic Kingdom, one hand often does not know what the other hand is doing. The brother of the prince in charge of anti-terror activities may be giving money to Al-Qaeda.

Some princes play both sides of the street, conforming to official policy publicly, and privately funding Pakistani madrassahs. But as princes, they are representatives of the Saudi government.

Terror funding from Saudi Arabia often comes from unofficial, private actions by Saudi princes. Trouble is, as princes their actions are not all that unofficial and private.

re: #93 David Simon

As black professor Walter Williams noted, blacks whose ancestors were brought to this country as slaves are better off economically and have more civil liberties. So in essence, they "benefitted" from slavery too.

One of the little known things about Robert E. Lee and his family is that they were very involved in educating slaves in spite of laws forbidding it, freeing their slaves, allowing them to marry and financing new homes in Liberia for many of them. Liberia, as you know, was founded by wealthy Americans opposed to slavery as a place to which those held in slavery could be repatriated without fear of finding themselves immediately re-enslaved.

Compare the economic status of the Liberian descendants and American descendants.

Exactly. But also remember, the Saudi 'state' is incredibly weak. Their police forces are hopelessly corrupt. No gumshoe cop dare investigate a prince.

The Saudi state exists via patronage on a massive scale.

Israel clears troops in Gaza cameraman's death

JERUSALEM (AFP) — The Israeli military said Wednesday it had cleared troops of responsibility for the killing of a Reuters cameraman in the Gaza Strip, saying the decision to fire a tank round at him was "reasonable."

Fadel Shana, 24, was killed on April 16 along with eight other civilians when an Israeli tank fired at him as he filmed it from around 1.5 kilometres (a mile) away.

"The decision to authorise the shot was reasonable given the circumstances of the incident," the military said in a statement. "No further legal action will be taken."

It must have been a Virginian thing. Washington did the same thing. One of my favorite stories about him was when he was President and the Capital was in New York - a free state that had a law that slaves became free after 120 days of residency - he would staff his home there with complete families, going so far as to leave them there "absentmindedly" to look after the place when he went back to Virginia. After they would become "free" he would instruct his staff to train them in a trade and provide them with the tools of the trade so they could sustain themselves. He would even start them out with a "little" something so they could provide a home for themselves along with the new free life. Then he would start all over again - because he needed people there to look after the place, you know.

The will he left instructed the slaves to be kept only until his wife died. Then they, too, were to be taught a trade, given the tools of their trade, some cash to start them out and freed.

Huh. Never knew about the last part. The things I learn here...

Robert E. Lee's wife was Mary Custis. She was the daughter of the stepson of George Washington. Her father worshiped George and modeled his life on him - collecting Washington's possessions, doing the things he did, and emulating his attitudes towards slavery. (BTW, in the Lee family slaves were referred to as "servants.")

Both of Lee's daughters ran schools for black children. They often helped married couples establish themselves in the north. And his daughters and wife for many, many years were involved in raising money to set up former slaves in Liberia.

When Mary left Arlington (the national cemetery was once the Custis/Lee home) she insisted to the Union soldiers who occupied the place that one of her servants be regularly allowed to go into Washington with his produce as usual and that another, who had married someone who lived in town, be given a pass to go to see his family every week from Friday to Monday.

Now that's one piece of history I DIDN'T know about Liberia. Thank you.

/Mom was born their as a missionary kid in the 40's
//one reason I am not an American citizen today. ;)

Blue, Liberia is a very interesting country. It was founded by wealthy American so as to be able to repatriate blacks from this country to Africa, but is was also the home for many years of a concerted effort by the US Navy to stop slavery off the coast of Africa. Both the USS Constitution and the US Constellation were involved in that. When they caught slave runners, they would rescue the slaves and then take them to Liberia, as they could not safely return them to the originating port without risking them being immediately enlaved again.

That is why, BTW, if you look at the Liberian flag, you will see a great deal of resemblance to the US flag. [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

This was not just a Virginia thing. But Robert E. Lee (son of Light Horse Harry Lee, Revolutionary War Hero) was related to George Washington and his wife Mary Custis was the daughter of Washington's stepson.

Yes - I remember the connection. Maybe it was just a family thing? Although I seem to remember that even during the Contitutional Convention reference was made to "Slave State Virginia," and how she didn't want the slaves she did have.

Hmmm, I used to know more about this than I can recall at the moment. I shall have to refresh myself on the particulars!

My mother was born there in 1940. My Grandfather was a missionary for the Gio tribe in deep central Liberia. One of his great points was developing a written language for them. The one factoid I still remember to this day was white people could not be citizens of Liberia (at the time I did a report for school only one was, and it took a constitutional amendment to do it). Therefore my mother's citizenship status reverted to her parents, which was Canadian.

Gaza 'siege-breaking boats' delayed

A storm has kept two boats carrying 44 pro-Palestinian activists from setting off for Gaza on Wednesday, delaying their journey until Friday, the Free Gaza Movement, which organized the vessels, said.

The voyage is aimed at "breaking the siege of Gaza," spokeswoman Gretta Berlin said, adding that the the activists "do not intend to turn around" if they are confronted by the Israeli Navy.

"Why should we turn around? Israel doesn't own that property. We have been invited by the people of Gaza," Berlin said, speaking from Cyprus, where the boats will dock en route to Gaza.

Moby the musician once bragged about getting on conservative websites, pretending to be one of them, and then goading people into posting outrageous stuff that he could then use against them. That or he would try to cause dissent in the ranks.

re: #294 HoosierHoops

gawd.. I hate asking this.. What's a moby?

From the LGF Dictionary (thanks, zombie, song_and_dance_man, Killgore Trout, Thanos, vxbush, lawhawk, DesertSage, Mandy Manners, Noam Sayin’, and writermom):

Moby: An insidious and specialized type of left-wing troll who visits blogs and impersonates a conservative for the purpose of either spreading false rumors intended to sow dissension among conservative voters, or who purposely posts inflammatory and offensive comments for the purpose of discrediting the blog in question. The term is derived from the name of the liberal musician Moby, who famously suggested in February of 2004 that left-wing activists engage in this type of subterfuge: “For example, you can go on all the pro-life chat rooms and say you’re an outraged right-wing voter and that you know that George Bush drove an ex-girlfriend to an abortion clinic and paid for her to get an abortion. Then you go to an anti-immigration Web site chat room and ask, ‘What’s all this about George Bush proposing amnesty for illegal aliens?’” The strategy has been frequently attempted on LGF and elsewhere, but has not been nearly as effective as Moby envisioned, since false rumors are easily debunked by fact-checking minions, and cartoonishly extreme commenters often get immediately identified as mobys and banned from LGF.

Sort of reminiscent of those deep-sea fish which have little lure appendages dangling in front of their mouths, which they use to sucker in other fish.

I haven't tried that, but does it work picking up chicks?

My sock is named "pre-Boomer's SockPuppy".
Will that get me into trouble with PETA?
Will I have to get it a rabies shot?
What the leash laws in here?

No big surprise here. In December it will have been 20 years since the Lockerbie aerial massacre and there is still no real closure there. The reason why is that no one (outside of LGF and a few other places anyway) can bear to even mention that the reason bad things like this happen is that bad people with bad ideas and beliefs are behind them. Once enough of us admit that "they" ARE different and we ARE better it will change - not before. It is political correctness and moral relativism and it is killing us. I have a post that tries to get people to take a little baby step toward the reality of it and there is a petition attached that needs your signature. Please take a look- it might be just the strategy to wake up your liberal friends and relatives...

Sickening; I'm so sorry for these families. I find it very disturbing that there are parties who are protected from being sued - by law. The EU comes to mind: that highly undemocratic body that rules not by "jus" (natural law) but predominantly by "lex" (positive or legal law). Legally correct, but no justice to be had.

409 Random63  Thu, Aug 14, 2008 4:27:25pm

I don't give a damn what the court, the President, or the State Department says about Saudi Arabia being innocent...they are not. The Saudis committed a act of war upon our country killing more Americans than was killed by the Japanese in Pearl Harbor. 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi, Al Queada is headed by a prominent Saudi family, and is funded by Saudis. The violent ROP is funded, promoted, and headquartered in Saudi.

Our government and leaders failed to defend our country and go after the source of this attack. A country committed a act of war against us, killed thousands of our people on our soil, and all our President can do is send our military to Afghanistan to run around some mountains and caves and tell our citizens to just keep shopping.

If our leaders had done their job on September 12th and dealt with Saudi Arabia, this war would have already been over and a great evil would have been removed from this world.
