Killer of Arkansas Democratic Chairman May Have Known Victim

Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 10:45:42 am PDT

The killer of Arkansas Democratic Party chairman Bill Gwatney may have known his victim; evidence has turned up that indicates a possible grudge over Gwatney’s automobile dealerships.

SEARCY, Ark. (AP) - Police are exploring possible links between the Arkansas Democratic Party chairman who was gunned down in his office yesterday and his killer.

The victim, Bill Gwatney, was fatally shot by Timothy Dale Johnson, who was then killed by officers after a 30-minute chase.

Authorities say a search of the dead gunman’s home turned up 14 guns, antidepressants, his last will and testament and a Post-It note that bore his victim’s last name and a telephone number.

Gwatney owned three Little Rock area car dealerships and the search of Johnson’s home turned up two sets of keys for vehicles from Gwatney car lots.

Considering he asked for the man _by name_, I would assume that he definitely knew his victim in some form.

The thing that makes me sad is, this man is going to be pointed at by the liberal Leftards as an example of why we need more gun control in this country.

So far, nothing about him working for Gwatney, and I still wonder about his connection to the Baptist Convention building, where he was seen brandishing the gun before going on the high speed chase.

He was, apparently, fired from Target just yesterday after scrawling graffiti.

Would be interesting if this was a case where the guy was selling cars to people who he knew couldn't afford the payments, and then sold the paper afterward.

Not that such would stop Dems from lecturing us on subprime.

re: #13 MikeySDCA

Here.

Today's THV has learned from an anonymous source that worked with 50-year-old Timothy Dale Johnson at the Conway Target that Johnson's rage started around 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Johnson's co-worker says graffiti laced with curse words concerning a hallway were found by management. The graffiti said, "This hall is too *** **** narrow."

Store managers called a meeting. We're told they asked if whoever wrote the graffiti to step forward and admit it and he or she wouldn't be fired. Our source says store management later found the same graffiti signed and dated by Johnson.

Over the next hour or so, Johnson's co-worker says he wrote on a door and another hallway again with objectionable words. "Target is run by dumb jocks and sorority *******."

A third graffiti was found on the human resources door saying, "sorority *******." Our source tells us that management talked with Johnson and then Johnson stormed off and left the building.

Conway police tell Today's THV they were called to Target around 8 a.m. about a disgruntled employee. When police arrived Johnson had already left.

Because of cost and time restraints, most doctors will just give a person an antidepressant rather than actually listening to them and finding appropriate help. In addition, most antidepressants are prescribed by non-psychiatrists (internists, GPs and the like). Sometimes it works out fine, but some people are not helped and just get worse. A few antidepressants have been linked to increased risk of suicide or violence, but I am more inclined to believe the behavior is a manifestation of the underlying illness, not a new behavior caused by the drugs.

OT: VDH in classic form today-

Meanwhile, the hypocrisy becomes harder to take. After all, it is easy for self-appointed global moralists to complain that terrorists don't enjoy Miranda rights at Guantanamo, but it would be hard to do much about the Russian military invading Georgia's democracy and bombing its cities.

Al Gore crisscrosses the country, pontificating about Americans' carbon footprints. But he could do far better to fly to China to convince them not to open 500 new coal-burning power plants.

It has been chic to chant "No blood for oil" about Iraq's petroleum -- petroleum that, in fact, is now administered by a constitutional republic. But such sloganeering would be better directed at China's sweetheart oil deals with Sudan that enable the mass murdering in Darfur.

Due to climbing prices and high government taxes, gasoline consumption is declining in the West, but its use is rising in other places, where it is either untaxed or subsidized.

So, what a richer but more critical world has forgotten is that in large part America was the model, not the villain -- and that postwar globalization was always a form of engaged Americanization that enriched and protected billions.

I agree with you- but I think it's more than just the doctors. I think a lot of people in need of help are attracted to a quick solution like a pill instead of taking the time to really work through their problems.

This.

I have known a few people that took antidepressants. A majority of them use an argument along the lines of, "I'm a busy person, got to keep up with my life, I can't afford to take time/money to go see a psychiatrist and get myself straightened out. I'll just go get a prescription and it'll all go away." I for one am firmly convinced that way too many people are turning to doctors to get a diagnosis and a prescription instead of searching their souls to find where the real problems lie.

I had a Ford Contour for about 5 years, worst damn car I ever owned.

I've been a Ford Man since my I got my first Ford in the Army. An beat up '65 Fairlane. Best car deal I ever made. $300 bucks and I drove the thing over 30k miles in the next year with only about $600 bucks in maintenance and repairs, including new tires. My current is my favorite that I have owned, an '05 Escape that was my first new purchase. About my only complaint is the tiny gas tank. 16 Gallons is too small for a 19mpg vehicle.

Wasn't the Mercury Mystique based on the Contour chassis? I drove a Mystique once. It earned the moniker Mistake. That thing sucked.

Only goes so far; suppose they do find out where their real problems lie and find that they can't do anything about them?
For SOME people, antidepressants really are necessary for them to function - not to mention that working with a real psychiatrist can take years to unravel a tightly woven problem.

Thats my opinion. There is a reason for feeling the way you do. Sure, in some cases, there might be a real problem that requires medical attention, but in a lot of the cases, they just dont want to deal with something and take the pill so they "feel better." Guess what? You're not supposed to feel like a happy ray of f**king sunshine 24/7. Sometimes you're supposed to feel like crap and be angry and ready to take someones head off or cry your eyes out.

I won't disagree that there are legitimate uses to antidepressants and suchlike. However, I think they are VASTLY overused in today's society. I tend to think mental disorders are grossly overdiagnosed, and that it is the fault of both doctors and patients that this has come to be.

I have known a few people that took antidepressants. I'll just go get a prescription and it'll all go away." I for one am firmly convinced that way too many people are turning to doctors to get a diagnosis and a prescription instead of searching their souls to find where the real problems lie.

I for one am firmly convinced you don't know what you are talking about. For one who is married to a woman who suffers from bi-polar disorder I can say I totally disagree with the notion this disease can be cured through soul searching. This disease is just that, an organic disease not a mental psychosis. An imbalance of brain chemicals, hormones, etc. is what causes the disease and there is no way any sole searching is going to change your friggin brain chemistry. The notion that people who suffer from depression only need to find where their real problems lie to cure themselves is ridiculous. I could go on and on about this but you only need to have lived with someone who suffers to understand.

That's probably true as well. The problem is taking the time to distinguish between a chemical imbalance or other brain problem that will respond to medication, and problems that have more to do with life events, maladjustment, or personal issues. For instance, an antidepressant won't solve your unresolved issues with an abusive childhood, although it may give you enough mental stability to begin to deal with it.

Down here in Texas they didn't rust, and if you never let the things overheat (kiss of death with Vegas), they would go a long way.

Was that the one with the Cosworth engine? The Vega looked incredible, sort a little Camaro from the front, but they rusted out if you washed them too vigorously. I have heard that the drive train was very good, which was quite an exception to the typical stuff out of Detroit at the time.

re: #163 doppelganglander

That's probably true as well. The problem is taking the time to distinguish between a chemical imbalance or other brain problem that will respond to medication, and problems that have more to do with life events, maladjustment, or personal issues. For instance, an antidepressant won't solve your unresolved issues with an abusive childhood, although it may give you enough mental stability to begin to deal with it.

I agree, and good point. And I might add that not all people who suffer from depression have had some prior maladjustment or personal issue like child abuse which seems to be the assumption of those who think all the depressed person needs to do is work through their personal problems to cure their depression. This is an organic disease maybe made worse by some prior life experience but certainly not caused by it.

And sometimes the one triggers the other. Psychiatry is in its infancy relative to other medical specialties. Maybe one day, there will be a blood test that can accurately determine the exact chemical imbalance causing the brain not to work right. Until then its really is just trial and error.

As I linked yesterday, a Tim Johnson from Searcy (the same name and hometown of the killer) was also involved in a workman's comp case against Arkansas Steel Erectors.

Complaining about narrow hallways, the other workers at Target, potentially his treatment in purchasing a car, etc. Not implying that all workman's comp cases are like this, but it would fit the profile of a guy who blamed every one else for his life.

Thanks. I'm one of those people who had a perfectly normal upbringing with good parents who nevertheless was more or less miserable every day of my life until I got on antidepressants. I still have good days and bad days, but now they're related to actual events and situations in my life.

What tends to happen is that a person is evaluated by a shrink, but doesn't manage to say anything that would trip the "danger to self or others" switch. So they give him antidepressants hoping it's just a really bad case of depression.

CSH -

Have lots of Ford experience, from Pinto (Built them, Henry Ford Scholarship the Hard Way) to Focus (My Current) with Mustang and Escort stories along the way. Contour for some reason was a German Ford (Mondeo) that didn't translate well into English until it was re-done and became the 2001 ESCAPE - the Contour Wagon that Never Was. The Focus, another Ford Deutchland Design was pretty well perfected by the end of the second model year (2001). -S-

re: #2 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Definately seemed personal.

Here's the thing. Arkansas is a tiny state. About 3 million people. Anyone long term here probably isn't the famous 6 degrees of separated, he's most likely 1 or 2 degrees away.

So you get situations where one person knows, just for example, the fellow who sold Roger Clinton his cocaine, has had lunch with Win Rockefeller at his Petit Jean estate, shook hands (and been called "my friend") by Billy Jeff, dined with the man who was at the time the richest man in America (Sam Walton), and has friends and relatives on both sides of the fence at Varner (formerly Cummins prison farm). He has seen Susan MacDougal in her white hot pants astride that horse advertising lots for sale in Whitewater development.

The surprise is not that Johnson might have known Gwatney. The surprise would be if Johnson did not know Gwatney.

Thus a long-term Arkie would know that if Johnson was running towards his sisters house, and his sister lived in Sheridan, then Johnson was of the Caucasian Persuasion. He knows Gwatney's face from any number of TV ads going back for decades.

Fourteen guns in his home? Sounds like that's somewhere in the realm of statistical probability for the average Arkie.

It occurs to me that Mr. Gwatney's murderer killed him because, like so many assassins, he was a zero that amounted to nothing in society. So to give himself worth (in his own eyes) he decided to kill a public figure. Mr. Gwatney was the best known public figure in the area that could be closely approached by a stranger. Problem solved. And that is the reason (in my musings) that The murderer chose him.

(I won't dignify the murderer by using it's name)
