US-Poland Missile Defense Pact

Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:28:19 am PDT

The United States and Poland have agreed on a missile defense deal, and according to the Associated Press Russia is “infuriated.”

WARSAW, Poland - Poland and the United States reached an agreement Thursday that will see a battery of American missiles established inside Poland, a plan that has infuriated Russia and raised the specter of an escalation of tension with the region’s communist-era master.

The deal, which was to be signed later Thursday in Warsaw by Poland and the United States, includes what Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called a “mutual commitment” between the two nations — beyond that of NATO — to come to each other’s assistance in case of danger.

And I'm sure this system will be designed to deal with missiles from Russia, not just Iran.

Putin should listen to what Yamamoto said after Pearl Harbor, that he feared that Japan had awakened the US.

4 karmic_inquisitor  Thu, Aug 14, 2008 11:30:52am

Now let's let them know they won't be having any NATO teams at their Olympics unless they leave Georgia.

Missile shields wouldn't be needed if Russia would get over their imperialistic aggressive tendencies.

Newsflash Putin, Communism is dead, the Tsar is dead, and you've more than worn out your welcome. Step aside and let your country enter the 21st century.

It looks like the Georgian Air-defense network was simple and far less networked then other systems. This actually made it tougher to shut down. I think the 1 comment attached at the bottom of the story is very interesting, if true.

re: #57 Sol Roth

That's a bit graphic, but probably not far removed from the truth.

The more I think on it, the less this seems to be a return the the Cold War and MAD. It is more like the "Great Game" of the nineteenth century where Russia was establishing it's regional dominance in South Central Asia and in Eastern Europe. There's bound to be some small territorial wars/skirmishes but nothing that will escalate to the point where Major Kong is riding the bomb down.

Just like Georgia trying to settle things in their OWN COUNTRY is somehow cause for the invasion and subsequent attempted regime change whereas Iraq continually thwarting UN resolutions, bribing officials around the world, shooting at our planes, and continuing forbidden weapons programs is considered 'contained'.

It's only wrong if a free country does it.

Here is a great article named "Putinism" that Leon Aron published at the American Enterprise Institute a couple of months ago.

Key excerpt to mail to any leftists you know who are ambivalent about Georgia and Putin:

Yet for many of those who persist in trying to influence national politics, repression, although select, is real, systematic, and pitiless. Under Putinism, opponents are portrayed as contemptible traitors who wish their country ill. As Putin stated at a pre-election rally last November:

Those who oppose us . . . have totally different tasks and different visions of Russia. They need a weak, sick state. They need a disorganized and disoriented society--in order to make their deals behind our back, in order to receive nice payoffs at our expense. And, unfortunately, there are still those who look for crumbs [Putin used the verb shakalit, or "looks for food jackal-like"] near foreign embassies, foreign diplomatic missions, [and who] count on the support of foreign foundations and governments, not the support of their own people.[8]

Unsanctioned demonstrations--and virtually all demonstrations by the opposition are routinely disallowed--are often suppressed with shocking brutality.[9] Several opposition activists have been physically assailed and some beaten unconscious. They and members of their families are harassed at home and on the streets and brought up on false criminal charges. Weapons and drugs are planted on them, and they are accused of "assaulting" and "injuring" police officers, espionage, and "extremism."[10] In violation of the progressive 2001 Criminal Procedural Code, bail is routinely denied, and pretrial detention--which Russian and international human rights organizations repeatedly compare to torture--can last for months or even years. The use of punitive psychiatry has been renewed, and several members of the opposition in the past year have been forcibly committed to psychiatric wards.[11] Human rights activists estimate that there are dozens of political prisoners in Russia today.[12]

re: #71 calcajun

That's a bit graphic, but probably not far removed from the truth.

The more I think on it, the less this seems to be a return the the Cold War and MAD. It is more like the "Great Game" of the nineteenth century where Russia was establishing it's regional dominance in South Central Asia and in Eastern Europe. There's bound to be some small territorial wars/skirmishes but nothing that will escalate to the point where Major Kong is riding the bomb down.

Sorry, I tend to let the manboy run amok at times :).

I read that beautiful Krauthammer article about pushing back to Russia. I want to add a few thoughts about this. In particular, just last week Putin as said he want's to start pushing back into Cuba, I assume this was the only warning we got form him about is intentions of expansion and should be heeded. Cuba is a thorn on our side and has been since Kennedy was to weak to push over this fruit stand in 1963 during the Cuban Missle crisis and Bay of Pigs, Now we have a dictatorship sitting 90 miles off our coast while we try to establish democracy halfway around the world, Let's clean this mess up now. Cuba should be taken, and encourage the Colombians to take out Hugo Chavez, This is a failed portion of the Monroe Doctrine, Too much Communist influence in our hemisphere, still did not go away even after the dissolving of the Soviet Union. Now we are moving back to WWI politics in Europe.

This is eerily reminiscent of 1939.

Well, the guns started blazing in August 1914 for WWI; and September 1, 1939 for WWII. The summer seems to be a big time to start wars. Most wars I can think of have typically started sometime from May 15th through the end of September in the Northern Hemisphere, north of the tropics.

re: #169 Tigger2005

I rather think it was Hitler's aggression that brought England into WWII. And firm moves like this by England (and France) earlier in the game might have put an end to Hitler's ambitions altogether.

Clearly, it was England's decision to stand by Poland that provoked the Germans into invading their eastern neighbor. And if the US hadn't aggressively landed at Iwo Jima, the Japanese never would have felt it necessary to defensively attack Pearl Harbor.

Good on Poland and the U.S. Jester6 has it right, the new cold war will be fought differently than the old cold war, but some of the same old psy-ops are still as vital strategically.

As Bobby Fischer and Reagan knew - you have to make some moves that inspire shock, awe, and outrage to keep your opponent preoccupied and off balance. Russia thought it had the edge psychologically with their 'we're back' gambit, but Poland and the U.S. are calling them on it.

Quick OT if I may; I got this reply from a well-meaning, although confused man when I told him that Sudan has brought 10's of thousands of Arabs over from neighboring countries;

Interesting report , that is new information for me, but I still wonder why the powers that control Sudan prefer the arabs from Chad and Niger as a population? It can't be religion since the vast majority of victims are Muslim also... is it race? Clan? I wonder what the land tenure arrangements are for the new-comers... are the land arrangements significantly different than for the old polulation? Who controls the land now - I wonder...?

Does anyone have a good handle on the % of refugees who are Christian or Animist? I know it's simple racism but I'd like to back it up. I also know they hold non-Arab (or Persian) muslims in lower regard.

"Are we telling them [Russia] they cannot just invade a country they dislike, without international sanction, because they feel threatened?"

Yeah, like Georgia was just about ready to invade Russia proper in July when Russian paratroopers were running drills on the north side of the mountains, prepositioining all their equipment in the event Georgia attacked.

Washington State and American lose a good one.

Will Bachofner, whose 11-year stint as chief of the Washington State Patrol was the longest on record, died Tuesday from injuries sustained in a car wreck.

[snip]

"He is an absolute police officer pioneer," said former secretary of state Ralph Munro, who had lunch with Bachofner a few days ago. He called Bachofner "probably the finest leader the State Patrol has ever had. He took us through the tumultuous '60s — with everything from angry African-Americans storming the Governor's Office to huge union protests to rioting in the streets, and he handled it all with great caution and great care."

Munro noted that Bachofner's minority hires included present State Patrol Chief John Batiste and John Lovick, who rose to House speaker pro tem and last year was elected Snohomish County sheriff.

Bachofner retired in 1977 but also served as executive secretary of the Washington State Horse Racing Commission and chaired the Thurston County Republicans in 1978-82, the last time Olympia elected GOP lawmakers — Dick Hemstad and Bill Garson — to the Legislature.

Rest in peace.

Well, the guns started blazing in August 1914 for WWI; and September 1, 1939 for WWII. The summer seems to be a big time to start wars. Most wars I can think of have typically started sometime from May 15th through the end of September in the Northern Hemisphere, north of the tropics.

Campaigning season weather good roads are not muddy rivers are fordable passes are open etc.

I heard a Russian caller on a talk show this morning spinning the decades long tale of the USSR disbanding, then the Serbs being put upon when NATO/US finally stopped them from killing people in Kosovo, and then how the recognition of Kosovo with a Serbian section in the north further aggravated Russia.... and I'm following along and I'm all of a sudden thinking, "What's any of this got to do with Russia? The USSR broke up and Russia is supposed to be developing Russia, not trying to recapture the bad old days in Eastern Europe. Same with the oil pipeline(s) going through Georgia without any contact with Russia... Russia needs to get a life and see about adding value to the world, not returning to its bully past.

I rather think it was Hitler's aggression that brought England into WWII. And firm moves like this by England (and France) earlier in the game might have put an end to Hitler's ambitions altogether.

1st -- please do not mention "France" and 'Firm' in the same sentence, unless you are discussing how they like it.

2nd -- You are right. It most certainly WAS Hitler's aggression that eventually forced England to stand up for Democracy, its neighbors and itself. What I meant was that was the catalyst, or proximate cause for open hostilities was England honoring the Mutual Defense pact with Poland.

The war was inevitible unless England was OK with a Prussian aligned Europe. It seemed like everyone else was.

The team also will work with the U.S. Embassy in Georgia and with Georgian leaders to ascertain what the country needs. U.S. military transport planes or ships will deliver that aid.

Well, if Russia would take a step into the current world, they would only protect Serbia if Serbia weren't trying to slaughter the other ethnic groups in their neighborhood. In the current world, someone like Russia could be expected to stop their friends from genocide rather than defending them in doing it. NATO/US would have gladly stayed out of that (and almost did anyway) if Russia had leaned on their Serbian children and made them stop.

Actually, there is some truth, there. Georgians do not have the history of trying to survive as do Jews, who've had to do that for over 3,000 years in very hostile circumstances.

re: #333 BeerDrinking_VictoryMonkey

Actually, Germany declared war on Russia first before Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary.

However, it was in response to Russian mobilization tnat the declaration was made. The Russians first mobilized against Austria-Hungary, then the Austrians mobilized, then the Germans sent an ultimatum to Russia to demob against their ally, Austria-Hungary. Russia did not, and Germany declared war. It was the Russians who mobilized first.

The Russians mobilized because they felt it their duty to defend Serbia. The French supported Russia, and refused to remain neutral. The rest, as they say, is history.

Nasrallah: Georgia lost because of Israel

In a speech marking the two-year anniversary of the Second Lebanon War, Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah mocked Israel's political and military leadership.

For past seven years, Israeli companies have been helping Gerogian army to preparer for war against Russia through arms deals, training of infantry units and security advice

"The entire front line of the army's brass stepped down because of the war. Gal Hirsch, who was defeated in Lebanon, went to Georgia and they too lost because of him," laughed Nasrallah.

Hirsch, a brigadier-general in the reserves, served as commander of the IDF's Galilee Division during the war and resigned in its wake. In recent years he consulted the Georgian army on the establishment of elite units and rearmament, and gave various courses in the fields of combat intelligence and fighting in built-up areas.

"What happened in Georgia is a message to all those the Americans are seeking to entangle in dangerous adventures," said Nasrallah, adding that media attacks on Hizbullah's weapon arsenal would not impact the organization. "They will not triumph over us, we are an unmovable force."

Nasrallah asserted that "the results of the Second Lebanon War are evident even today, in both the military and political fields in Israel."

The Hizbullah chief also addressed recent comments by Defense Minister Ehud Barak regarding the importance of having an experienced leadership. "Ehud Barak admits that the reason for losing the war

was a lack of military experience. So who is there left in Israel with military experience if not all those failed generals?"

He also ridiculed Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Chief of Staff Ashkenazi, quoting an Israel newspaper as saying Olmert "died two years ago in Lebanon and will be brought to political burial in two months."

He opened his statements with words of condolence to the families of those killed in Tripoli and went on to welcome the establishment of a new government in Beirut this week, in which Hizbullah is a prominent partner.

Yet he won;t leave his bunker.

Good for the Poles! I hope the Czech's will do likewise.

The Russian bear might just be falling into a trap.
The US is effectively giving Lavrov the finger. As the scene unfolds, we might see the US, NATO and Israel entangling the Russian bear in a trap set for them in Georgia, thus complicating their relationship with Iran. How much damage can Russia do with US supply planes in Tbilisi? (They couldn't send fighters in. That would present a dangerous direct confrontation with Russia.) Are they going to shoot Condi when she arrives in the next day or 2?

In the meantime, the Ukraine has indicated that it will not tolerate the infringement of Ukrainian territorial waters by Russia ships.

The Russian attack has several missions, the first of which has failed:
1) To try to show that the West, especially the US, is a paper tiger, and to warn Poland and the Czech Rep. that they had
better not allow the US missile defense to be stationed there. In this, Russia has failed with Poland signing on the missile shield deal today, in a very timely manner. The US has spit in Russia's eye.

2) To create a unified allegiance with Iran: Russia against the West, Iran against the East (the Middle East, in particular), thus dominating all oil supplies (Nigeria and Venezuela are both in the Russo-Iranian sphere of influence). With the stupid, stubborn Democrats blocking drilling for oil, the Russo-Iranian axis can still make a lot of trouble if the West fails to break them up and rid Iran of its nuclear ambitions and, perhaps, even bring down the islamofascist regime.

3) To dominate the total flow of oil and gas that runs through the Caucasus for Russia, alone, thereby cutting off crucial supply to the West. (Why to you think that there are urgent talks going on now between Turkey and Iran?) By distracting Russia in Georgia and causing it some pain, the US can force the Iranians to either make a quick, disastrous move in the Gulf.

With 2 major carriers and an advanced nuclear sub heading for the Persian Gulf, the US may try a wedge tactic with Russia in Georgia and Iran in the Gulf, before Iran tries to blockade the Strait of Hormuz.

Here's the important part of the deal, and without Russia's naked agression in Georgia, the Poles would not have gotten this commitment from the US, but now the deal's firmly sealed. IF Poland is attacked, we react instantly, as if it were an attack on us:

"Poland and the Poles do not want to be in alliances in which assistance comes at some point later — it is no good when assistance comes to dead people. Poland wants to be in alliances where assistance comes in the very first hours of — knock on wood — any possible conflict," Tusk said.

"This is a step toward real security for Poland in the future," he added.

A U.S. official in Washington said "it looks as if we're near agreement, and we hope to make a joint announcement today." The official spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement.

The scam French brokered Russia-Georgia cease fire just lost a whole lot of leverage for Sarko with the New Europe nations.

Not at all. Sarkozy did that under close consultation with Bush. It was the set-up to the American response. The French play the nice cop diplomat, the Georgians (who were also in touch with Bush) sign on. The Russians play along, thinking they've got Bush hood-winked. Then the Russians ignore the ceasefire they just agreed to. Bush drops the other shoe.

521 ashan  Thu, Aug 14, 2008 1:22:31pm

One other point: I read somewhere that Russia has been waiting for a long time for an opportunity to reconquer the breakaway republics. The Georgian step into southern Ossetia was too sweet to miss for Volodya Putin Bonaparte. Bush was nearby in Beijing. Volodya was there too. It was an ideal setup. Russia continues to do the wrong thing, with a column of tanks entering Georgia from Abkhazia. Now the human rights organizations are starting to sound off. This time, Russia can't block them - or the press - out like they did twice in Chechnya. They've got nowhere to hide their nasty business. It's good to see the Soviet Russia bear get raked over the coals, getting its paws and snout burnt.

BTW - BO really scares me. I hope that a lot more people will wake up to the fact that BO would put the US into a very dangerous stranglehold on ALL fronts. He had better not win in November.

Has anyone spoken about the level of influence that the Russia crime families have with Putin? I would suggest that there is some serious stuff at play between the Russian Mob and Putin that is all about the pipeline. If anyone thinks that they don't swing a lot of weight just look at the arrest of owner of the largest oil/gas provider in Russia about five years ago. He wasn't giving the proper honorarium to the right people. [Link: www.foxnews.com...]

You might also want to read this;[Link: www.cdi.org...] It is an older article but I think it gives a pretty good sense of what has transpired in the past 5 years, particularly as it relates to how oil prices influence the Russian economy

The Georgians are so out-manned that they have no ability to protect their cities, infrastructure, or military installations. I've read of drunken Russian commanders yelling "take whatever you want" to irregulars. It's medieval. It's the worst you can think of - civilians as targets in a playground for drunken barbarians. I've had several discussions online with Ukrainians in the past, even here recently on LGF. There is a bit of a split in the country, mirrored in its politics. Eastern Ukrainians, in general, feel closer to and more sympathetic to Russia than westerners. A good deal of the western Ukraine is territory seized from Poland when Stalin and Hitler were pals. Some of the easterners I've talked to are dismissive of westerners, say they're not really Ukrainians, and are culturally different. A recipe for mischief to be sure.

Yep. There's a major criminal associate of Putin's here in Israel, Arkady Gaydamak. He makes billions from weapons deals in Angola, a monopoly on the chicken/egg business in Russia and money laundering. He is continually trying to ingratiate himself into Israeli social and political life. He wants to run for mayor of Jerusalem. Chutzpa big time. He doesn't speak Hebrew. He's probably not even Jewish, although he thinks he knows something about Jewish tradition. Not. Some suspect that he's one of Volodya's old-time KGB buddies. In a TV special about him, he remarked that he can see from his gaudy, opulent Moscow apartment overlooking the Kremlin whenever Putin turns the light on in his office.

Oh, and the Paris police have a warrant for his arrest.

However, having a drunken colonel weaving down the street egging bands of men to burn, shoot, rape, and pillage cities is NOT normal. Allowing rough bands of irregulars free reign is not normal.

What is more, discipline - doing your job - is really vital to success. Just because you can employ an overwhelming force and squash gnats doesn't mean you will come off the playground if you wind up in a game with the big boys.

Talking about the "mutual commitment" part of the agreement, Tusk said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization would be too slow in coming to Poland's defense if Poland were threatened and that the bloc would take "days, weeks to start that machinery." "Poland and the Poles do not want to be in alliances in which assistance comes at some point later — it is no good when assistance comes to dead people. Poland wants to be in alliances where assistance comes in the very first hours of — knock on wood — any possible conflict," Tusk said.

Prime Minister Tuck is absolutely right about that. Once NATO gets off its ass and actually takes action, Poland would already be annexed and there would be precious little NATO would be willing to do.

We need more "mutual commitment" agreements with allies that are threatened by Russia.

In truth, no one knows better the horror of war than those decent people who have to fight in one. The lefties, who make up the bulk of the "peace" advocates, have no clue. IMHO.

I received one of the books I ordered for the coming school year in the mail this afternoon. The subject is WWI. Right there in the first two pages it describes exactly what the anti-war folks and the Peace Now folks and all the rest thought about WWI - nearly 100 years ago. The message is word for word identical to their message today.

So if the Soviets cut off oil/gas, the Soviets lose hard currency, the Euro weenies freeze, the Euros finally meet their Kyoto targets, and the Obamanation has caused the rise of the oceans to slow. A perfect storm of liberalism.

As other lizards have aptly pointed out this was surely to be expected by the Soviets, after all, invading a peaceful non threatening democracy would make the other peaceful democracies cling closer to the USA not drive them closer to Moscow, when they've had such recent horrific memories of such a close relationship. Like the abusive guardian, I'm sure Moscovites deny that it was all the child's fault and that any reports of abuse was due to the ungrateful and perverse ward's perception and was unreal.

Damn, I arrive way to late to participate in the topic. Just want to say that this is a step in the right direction. As much as I dislike the Bush administration on 80 percent of what they do, the other 20 percent is more important than the other 80. We need to do more of this, and McCain will do it. Eisenhower was one of greatest and quietest presidents in history, and was facing the Soviets and red Chinese at the height of their power during the cold war. I wonder if there is a lot of Eisenhower in McCain?

So Russia is infuriated, but is it about missiles nearby, or Jews with missiles, or just about Jews?

The deep roots of anti-semitism in Russia make me not very optimistic about these recent missile defense developments.

Many people recalling the systematic destruction of Poland in ww2 think only of Germany's role, forgetting Russia's. In pre-Bolshevic Russia, male Jews were required to serve in the military, typically for 25 years. Paradoxically, they were one of the most oppressed and exploited of social classes, and simultaneously one of the most respected, and perhaps feared.

Eastern Europe have been slapping Poland around for about 600 years since it has no natural defenses. Germany, Austria and especially Russia have used Poland as their bitch because they could get away with it and because it was in their interest to have a weak neighbor separating the 3 empires.

I'm glad to see Poland is standing up for herself BEFORE the shooting starts. It may just be the thing that prevents the shooting altogether.

656 DrCruel  Thu, Aug 14, 2008 8:54:07pm

Since Russia has been so kind as to help Iran build a "peaceful nuclear research facility" at Bushehr, perhaps we might help Poland do the same in their country.

At the very least, it would put off plans for any future Russian partitions. One would think Stalin's standing land grab from Poland would be enough, but you never know.

Also the Trumann Doctrine and the Reagan Doctrine. And it has hurt us dearly, from a close call on a nuclear exchange during the Bay of Pigs, to the loss of the Panama Canal, to the recent increase in communist and socialist strains in South America. Let's see, Russian Foreign Priminister already promised 'this act will not go un-punished". What can they do to hurt the US influence?

Another race to weaponry build up? Russia counting on this time they CAN afford it, but we can't?

660 Mr. Hamlet  Fri, Aug 15, 2008 9:01:23am

Isn't this the same missile defense system that Obama claimed did not work and was a waste of money? The same defense system that Obama vowed to get rid of? If Obama is elected, we may need to count on Poland to protect us!

I wonder how long it will be before the Russians accuse the Bush administration of drumming up all this Georgia hoopla to restart a pseudo cold war so that Obama won't get elected?
