Suprisingly the main proponent for evolution was not Darwin , but his nephew .

Darwin if anything put forward Natural Adaption , and survival of the fittest .......you may call that evolution , but it is all created by a creator ./ Unless of course someone can explain WHERE the Electron gets its charge from .

29 Conservative in Liberal Hands  Thu, Aug 14, 2008 1:26:42pm
Since the beginning of recorded history, man has used his abilities as a toolmaker to try to ensure for himself a continued rise in his standard of living and in the number of his possessions. The rise has been a steady one, interrupted only by periods of war, plague or famine. Communities have accepted and used inventions, which would contribute to this pattern of development and rejected those which would not.

The above is from a book and PBS TV series called "Connections". One hopes that our community is adaptable enough to prosper in this changing environment.

Nice quote. Hopefully it will help to shut up the endless repetition of the inaccurate non-Darwinian phrase "survival of the fittest." Strength, intelligence, and "fitness" have nothing to do with it -- but rather having the genetic capacity for the kinds of phenotype variations which make you better able to eat and reproduce than another species potentially occupying the emerging ecological niche.

Sounds complicated, but basically it means: Can you go with the flow?

Interesting -

Russia says concerned by U.S. cargoes to Georgia

Russia`s General Staff said on Thursday it was concerned by the type of cargoes the United States was airlifting to Georgia and said Russia`s Black Sea fleet would take commands only from the Russian President

Ukraine`s president Viktor Yushchenko had signed a decree requiring authorization for Russian warships to return to their base in Sevastopol, a Crimean port which is part of Ukraine.

Colonel-General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy head of Russia`s general staff, told a news conference it was legitimate for Russian peacekeepers to be in the Georgian port town of Poti for intelligence operations.

The General Staff had previously denied Russian troops were in Poti.

But fittest in this context does not necessarily refer to fitness as in physical fitness, which I assume you mean above. I thought the fittest referred to the choice that fit the situation better. i.e. The adaptation that allowed for better breeding strategy was the 'fit' one.

Not true. Sometimes extra strength can be a burden. In certain isolated island environments, once huge creatures (elephants, giant sloths, hippos, even humans) over time evolve to become smaller and weaker, because a small creature can better survive on the island's limited resources. It's happened many times in evolutionary history -- "dwarfism" or progressive miniaturization (and hence weakening) of a species.

Same for intelligence: birds evolved to become dumber and dumber over time compared to their ancestors, because maintaining a big, energy-sucking heavy brain rendered them less able to fly and eat in sufficient amounts to keep going. It was evolutionarily more useful to have a lightweight brain (and the ease of flying that accompanied it) than a big brain. The extra intelligence didn't help, in their particular ecological niche (i.e. being airborne).

Change of topic, a blonde joke.

A blonde lady motorist was about two hours from San Diego when she was flagged down by a man whose truck had broken down. The man walked up to the car and asked, 'Are you going to San Diego?'

'Sure,' answered the blonde, 'do you need a lift?'

'Not for me. I'll be spending the next three hours fixing my truck My problem is I've got two chimpanzees in the back which have to be taken to the San Diego Zoo. They're a bit stressed already so I don't want to keep them on the road all day. Could you possibly take them to the zoo for me? I'll give you $100 for your trouble.'

'I'd be happy to,' said the blonde. So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back seat of the blonde's car and carefully strapped into their seat belts. Off they went.

Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of San Diego when suddenly he was horrified! There was the blonde walking down the street and holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd.

With a screech of brakes he pulled off the road and ran over to the blonde. What the heck are you doing here?' he demanded, 'I gave you $100 to take these chimpanzees to the zoo.'

Okay, explain both Folsom Street Fair and Up Your Alley if zombie doesn't mix with crowds of groaning drooling buffoons.

Some of the last surviving wooly mammoths were apparently "dwarf mammoths" (great oxymoron!) on some island off of Siberia.

I got two words for ya: Flores Island:

In September 2003, at Liang Bua Cave in western Flores, paleoanthropologists discovered skeletons of a previously unknown hominid species. Homo floresiensis, affectionately termed hobbits after the small characters in the Lord of the Rings, appear to be miniaturized versions of Homo erectus standing about one metre tall. They may have existed until as recently as 11,000 BC. Local reports of elf-like people, the Ebu Gogo, or the Orang Pendek of Sumatra, have caused speculation that Flores man may have survived into the historical period, or even to the present. The discovery has been published in the October 28, 2004, issue of Nature magazine and the April 2005 issue of the National Geographic Magazine.[3] Flores was also a habitat of the extinct Stegodon dwarf elephant until approximately 18,000 years ago. It also was the habitat of species of giant rodents. It is speculated by scientists that limited resources drove the few species that lived upon the island to gigantism and dwarfism. [4]

The equation of homosexuals with torture and Nazism may have been a function of SA leader Ernst Rohm's well-known homosexuality...

Also note the commonplace Nazi-esque fetish iconography at the events I covered (or what I dubbed in that instance "the 'vaguely Hitlerian Boy Scout' look"). Being tortured by Nazi guards is a fairly common fantasy in the "dungeon scene" in some bathhouses.

I think there used to be more overt Nazi paraphernalia at these things, but that has become so taboo that they now tone it done, or instead dress like '20s-era Brown Shirts, and so on.

That's exactly what it was. Which is my point: regular-sized hominids made it over to the island, and eventually evolved to become smaller.

Same thing happened with pygmies in Africa, who usually live on "mountain islands" surrounded by inaccessible swampland. The pygmies didn't appear out of nowhere, or emerge on a completely unique evolutionary track: they're eventually descended from regular-sized humans who evolved to be tiny.

re: #157 Ben Hur

There is a famous (I think German) European film depicting one section of the SS murdering another because they were mainly homosexual.

Have you heard of that before?

Here is a decent summary:

Ernst Julius Röhm was a German military officer, and the commander and co-founder of the Nazi Sturmabteilung, or storm troopers — the SA, also known as 'Brownshirts'.

Ernst Röhm was one of the most prominent of a number of early Nazi party members who was a homosexual, and his homosexuality was ultimately the pretext used for his removal during the purge of the SA. The real reason was the threat he eventually posed to Hitler's authority. Having been outed in 1925, Röhm made little attempt to hide his sexuality. Despite Hitler's pretense of shock upon discovering his deputy's sexual orientation, he had in fact long known - probably since 1919 - that Röhm was homosexual.

During Röhm's tenure at the head of the SA, it has been suggested that a number of homosexual men (notably Karl Ernst, a former bouncer at a gay nightclub, and Edmund Heines) were appointed to and promoted within the SA as a result of high-level liaisons with powerful SA figures. Röhm's Brownshirt militia - mostly undisciplined soldiers and roughnecks from the city-slums - contained many gay men, and there was debauchery in the ranks. This was despite the openly anti-gay policies of the Nazis, exemplified by their strengthening of Paragraph 175 (criminalising homosexual acts) of the German Criminal Code of 1871.

Röhm was executed without trial during the purge of the SA — the so-called 'Night of the Long Knives' in June 1934.

In the wake of Röhm's execution, Hitler ordered the registration of homosexuals and the Gestapo was charged with the responsibility of creating dossiers on homosexuals and other 'asocials' in the Third Reich. The beginning of the Nazi terror against homosexuals was marked by the murder of Ernst Röhm.

Perhaps you all can help respond to an argument my friend is having with a young obama supporter. She nor I have the info to make any comments.
-------------------------------------------------
OUR FRIEND WROTE TO HER ----
I think McCain is a war monger because he is so bent on continuing the Iraq war and at any cost. I am all for the Afghan war, ya know the Taliban…the ones who helped Al Qaeda attack us on 9-11…but Iraq is different. We sure made a mess…and well, we have to slowly but surely fix it. As we pull our troops out, we can train more Iraqi soldiers, and move on to fight the real enemy – Al Qaeda. Also, Sen. McCain talks about “dealing with Iran however we must deal with them.” He is going to continue what Bush couldn’t get done. I want a president who will pick diplomacy over pre-emptive invasion like we used to do in this country…back when we were an example for the world, ya know aspiring democracies. Now we are looked down upon and have very little to no respect.

The next president will appoint 2 justices to the supreme court, also…and I do not want a conservative on the bench keeping us stuck in the time warp of 1953. I want to see equal rights for gay people and you know the GOP does not fancy people like me in any way. Peeks…B and I want to adopt a child so badly – but we cannot. There is a law on the books here…and guess who wrote it? A Republican. It just isn’t fair. Also, I want more for the working man. The rich are seriously getting richer, the top 2%, and the poor are getting poorer…while the middle class is evaporating. Surely you see that. Minimum wage, benefits, unions – all going down the toilet and at the hands of the GOP. Look at Bush’s tax cuts. OMG What do they do for the middle class? NOTHING! And with Obama, he will NOT raise taxes on the middle class – that is a myth, anyone making under 250K a year will not be taxed, seniors making no more than 50K a year will not be taxed and the rest is on his site.

It is not just the youth who are desiring change…a lot of people are really tired of the way things are. High gas prices, the cost of groceries, college tuition and the list goes on. I know all about George Soros and all along everyone knew about Karl Rove and the good ol’ boys who worked on and groomed Mr. Bush. I am one of today’s youth and I don’t like to think of myself as a pawn…I like to think that I can see the trees for the forest. I cannot support an OLD man who will be four more years of what we have had. I am not happy today. I was not happy yesterday and I will not be happy tomorrow. Our America is in shambles right now and it has been…Bush and Co. have sold this country down the toilet to the Saudis and a lot of others I don’t even want to get into – Halliburton, Black Water, etc. Obama is about change, that is a fact. Did you know that McCain is about change as well? He has in one of his attack ads: “Don’t HOPE for change, VOTE for it.” So…McCain is about change, too…red alert red alert! J And as for the youth, can you remember the last election they came out in droves to support anyone? I can’t.

As for the medical aspect of all this, the healthcare, I think you are familiar with the Republican healthcare plan: Don’t get sick. Ya know, I don’t care what kind of person comes to a doctor/ER/clinic. They can be unemployed, lazy, an alcoholic, a leper, a felon, black, white, Chinese, poor, rich, gay or straight – anyone who needs healthcare or medical attention should receive it. We are giving prisoners at Guantanamo Bay top-notch medical care and our own people here in our lovely country are dying in our ER waiting rooms.

I like the UN. I think that the UN was a phenomenal idea and when used properly – it is a powerful force that means a lot. Bush ignored the UN and went into Iraq against the counsel of all the other nations, and look where we are today.

The Strongest Tribe: War, Politics, and the Endgame in Iraq (Hardcover)
by Bing West (Author)

From a universally respected combat journalist, a gripping history based on five years of front-line reporting about how the war was turned around–and the choice now facing America

During the fierce battle for Fallujah, Bing West asked an Iraqi colonel why the archterrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had fled in women’s clothes. The colonel pointed to a Marine patrol walking by and said, “Americans are the strongest tribe.”

In Iraq, America made mistake after mistake. Many gave up on the war. Then the war took a sharp U-turn. Two generals–David Petraeus and Raymond Odierno–displayed the leadership America expected. Bringing the reader from the White House to the fighting in the streets, this remarkable narrative explains the turnaround by U.S. forces.

In the course of fourteen extended trips over five years, West embedded with more than sixty front-line units, discussing strategy with generals and tactics with corporals. He provides an expert’s account of counterinsurgency, disposing of myths. By describing the characters and combat in city after city, West gives the reader an in-depth understanding that will inform the debate about the war. This is the definitive study of how American soldiers actually fought –a gripping and visceral book that changes the way we think about the war, and essential reading for understanding the next critical steps to be taken.

Has anyone here ever read those 2 books by Obama? I did. What a total waste of time. Plus, who in hell writes an autobiography by age 40, with such a miniscule list of accomplishments? That takes some audacity, right there. Seems to me, that if the RNC wants some darts to throw at BHO, those two books are a target rich environment.

Georgian relief operation hampered as aid workers ambushed

Two UN workers experienced at first hand just how unstable the conflict zone could be.

Robert Watkins, UN resident coordinator for Georgia, told AFP two UN-marked cars were taken by "paramilitary" gunmen halted security officials doing a safety assessment in Gori.

Meanwhile, the UN refugee organisation the UNHCR flew its second humanitarian flight to the Georgian capital carrying tents, jerry cans, blankets and telecommunications equipment.

85 Percent of Flying Public Wants to See Children in Separate Section of Plane

When asked "Should airlines have a section of the plane reserved for parents with babies and smaller children?" 10,170 or 58% of respondents answered, "Yes, they should have done this long ago," while 27% answered, "Yes, but they never will and it'll never work." Only 15% answered, "No, this is a bad idea."

How about the cargo hold?

203 chicagodudewhotrades  Thu, Aug 14, 2008 2:17:54pm

I'm cutting and pasting this comment from the last thread. I'm pretty curious about this. any help would be great:

Has anybody seen any reliable numbers on casualities the Russians are taking in Georgia? I have read about 10 Russian planes and 40 tanks destroyed. No numbers on infantry casualities. The Red Army sucks across the board. I have a private theory that the Russians are getting pasted, but they have numbers on their side and can just overwhelm the Georgians. I think looking at Russian losses and how they occured would give great insight to the current Russian military capabilities.

thanks

You just know that Barry's Chicago machine/Soros/60's radical handlers pushed him to write these books as they readied his background for the presidential bid. Then they could be referenced by the MSM as if they were a fill-in for a valid CV. Most people won't read the books, so I'll bet that many can be swayed by spin (and cherry-picked passages) that these bios contain info that add heft and substance to Barry's character and resume.

That's not always true. On more than one occasion, I've been shocked by how many kids have been on a late night flight.

Not to mention the small (under 300 passenger) luxury cruise ship I was on a year ago where one couple brought their 8 year old daughter (clearly pulling her out of school for two weeks as it was not holiday time). There was literally nothing for the kid to do on the days at sea except run around the pool splashing and annoying the shit out of all the other passengers.

Some parents don't consider their kids - or their fellow travelers - at all.

When the skeleton was first found, some doubters claimed it was just a "short guy" who was living on the island -- not a separate lineage. But further finds and more research proved it was an offshoot hominid line that evolved to become very small (along with the elephants) before (supposedly) going extinct.

Biggest scam (in dollars) in history, totally in contradiction to the conditions imposed by the U.N. at the end of the war, as well as subsequent sanctions, all the while they are siphoning money off of a program that was meant to counter something thy imposed to begin with.

Furthermore, for so much faith in the U.N. what are we supposed to do, when we are abiding by the cease-fire agreement brokered by the U.N., Hussein violates the conditions daily, make a supposed humanitarian deal with oil for food, only to find out the U.N. is whoring the program to their benefit while the people of Iraq who are supposed to be relieved by it still suffer?

Biggest scam (in dollars) in history, totally in contradiction to the conditions imposed by the U.N. at the end of the war, as well as subsequent sanctions, all the while they are siphoning money off of a program that was meant to counter something thy imposed to begin with.

Ah, my pressure is reaching a boiling stage right now.

I'm hoping the UN may suffer a fatal shock from this Russia/Georgia thing. They've been awfully quiet about it. I would have at least expected some ranting from that podium in the big room in response to this.

No matter the genesis of this post, the answer is that it is a complete waste of time and energy to respond in the detail required to answer all the cobbled together half-truths, logical fallacies and empty claims made in such sophomoric, intellectual garble.

Even if you carefully refuted the arguments one by one with facts backed up by references, all that generally happens is that the nitwit behind it would disappear from your mailbox/the chat group for an hour to a day as crickets chirp, and then post the same cr@p all over again as if you hadn't bothered.

Our son learned this at a young age as well. We could take him anywhere and know that he understood what was acceptable. Well, as long as he had a good book with him, too.

Even I never leave home without a good book. One thing being an Army wife taught me well (other than hubby's social security number) is how to hurry up and wait - and the fact that you will get to do so often.

re: #240 buzzsawmonkey

In later years, as a coin collector, I would see quantities of Nazi paraphernalia at coin shops. Knowing what this material represented--and, of course, that it was "forbidden"--gave it an almost pornographic fascination, which makes me understand (though clearly not approve of) how people who have dedicated themselves to living pornographic lives can bring themselves to festoon their persons with symbols of a movement that would have imprisoned or killed them.

I too used to see plenty of Nazi stuff in coin/collectors shops. I used to love buying handfuls of worthless 1-pfennig pieces from 1942 for 5¢ each, each with a mysterious and forbidden swastika.

Over a decade ago I was in Austria in a second-tier city (I forget which one -- somewhere like Krems or Graz) and they have a flea market along the river front. One guy had a series of suitcases open on the ground (probably for quick closing and departure if necessary) each filled with totally authentic Nazi-era stuff for sale. (I'm very good at spotting fakes -- this stuff was real.) Medals, postcards, books, banners, flags -- you name it. At fairly inflated prices. But boy, did he draw a crowd. I ended up spending about $20 on a few things -- totally unlike me. But, as opposed to when I was a young kid, my reason for my interest in the stuff was much more insightful -- mostly as proof that all the horrifying things we read about in history books was really real.

Needless to say, what he was doing would have earned him a 5-year jail sentence in he had been caught by the authorities. But none of his customers seemed interested in turning him in!

re: #262 galloping granny

I had four of my own, often had my sister's two also, and not infrequently took so many kids out in public I had to count heads to make sure they were all there.

I have never had a child run, scream and kick the backs of the seats in public more than once. None of my grandchild ever have either. The first time they try it, you give them one warning - "We do not behave like this in public. Stop now or go to the car." When they don't stop you pick them up bodily and deposit them in the car, where they sit while everyone else except the one watching adult continues on with lunch or the movies or whatever. Never happens again.

I only had two, but raising them (essentially) alone was really hard! I always threatened "The Manager" no matter where we were. Picture two tykes, boy and girl, clinging to my skirt, eyes darting everywhere for the unknown creature of unknown size and make-up.

Today they giggle with me about this!

Overall, yes, but it's still hit or miss. A business class flight (on American believe it or not) to Barbados months ago was as good as any first class flight I've ever been on (although I've never flown first on Singapore or Emirates, which I understand is a whole other league). Coming back to Miami, just average.

American biz class on 767 or 777 is fine, even good sometimes. On their smaller planes, not so much.

United is a joke.

Continental "Business First" is okay; beats American biz class on smaller planes, but not as good as their 767/777.

The only real drawback was that when I finally landed in New York I had been away from home so long I had trouble understanding the English announcements over the loud speaker.

Commentary Magazine takes Andrew Sullivan for a trip down memory lane:

It seems that whatever Sullivan happens to believe at the moment--the war is right or the war is wrong; neo-conservatives are intelligent and far-sighted or neo-conservatives are idiots and fools; Bush is awesome or Bush is awful; those charging Jewish Americans of having "divided loyalties" are engaging in libel or they are doing a wonderful thing for public discourse--you can count on him to hold those views with absolute certitude and to condemn in the harshest terms those with whom he disagrees. (I suppose this is what he means by proclaiming himself a "conservative of doubt.")

I have argued before that many columnists and commentators suffer from the opposite syndrome. They write with passionate conviction and certitude in The Moment--even when what they believe at that moment is significantly different than, or even the opposite of, what they once said and believed. They are, to amend an observation Michael Kelly made about Bill Clinton, "existential pundits, living with absolute sincerity in the passing moment." In Robert Bolt's A Man for All Season, Thomas More says to an associate: "Listen, Roper. Two years ago you were a passionate Churchman; now you're a passionate--Lutheran. We must just pray that when your head's finished turning, your face is to the front again." Like More, those of us who admire Andrew's intelligence and talent can hope that when his head is finished turning, his face is to the front again.
