Citizen Journalism Workshop at Blogworld

Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 2:38:54 pm PDT

If you’re going to the Blogworld & New Media Expo next month, here’s an interesting workshop you might be interested in attending; they need to get some signups soon or the workshop may be canceled: Citizen Journalism Workshop.

The new journalism training certificate workshop AT BLOGWORLD & NEW MEDIA EXPO is for bloggers seeking to deepen and broaden their journalistic skills. This workshop focuses on tools and skills news and information bloggers can use to improve the quality, and impact of their blogs.

Bloggers and new media journalists will learn techniques of traditional journalists, including styles of opinion writing, investigative reporting techniques and fact-sourcing, avoiding legal pitfalls and tips on what makes a post most likely to get one quoted or cited by larger blogs, as well as the mainstream media.

Obviously I’m doing the “avoiding legal pitfalls” part, in a session called “Top 10 Ways to Blog Your Way Into a Lawsuit.” which I’ve billed as a fast paced romp through the legal risks that bloggers might face. As serious as this topic is - I think people’s fears cause them to not want to think about the risks - but actually looking at them makes them much easier to prevent. So I’ve tried to make this session fun and easy to handle.

I hope my blogging friends will sign up for program.

Perhaps the NYT, LAT, and WaPo should also consider sending some staff.

No, I think we're on our own for that one.

Are you attending, Charles?

Or do you need to keep the stalkers from knowing your itinerary...?

No. Thats currently Kragaristan's chief export and a tightly guarded state secret.

I'm sorry, but you'll need to form your response as a question.

And now the Daily Double...

Not too bad, keeping very busy with stuff on Friday nights now, so being in the Lounge is a bit more difficult.

I'll be there a couple of days later for Interbike. Maybe I should go early and hold a "pithy commenters" workshop.

Getting Mainstream Media Attention: How to Reach Out to Journalists (CJ4)
[Professor David Perlmutter, U. Kansas]
In a crowded online world, how does an independent blogger stand out and be heard? Being cited, quoted, published or used as a source by mainstream media is a significant way to build a larger and wider audience.

Looks like zombietime will get a mention, most likely! Perlmutter loves my stuff.

Just an observation, I picked up a rental car at the Kansas City Airport early this morning. It was odd. There were Black women in Burquas & guys in prayer caps working there.
They were not NOI , so I figure foreign.
This is the airport. Is this a good idea?

This workshop sounds interesting.

I would prefer to an anonymous blog like zombie time (personal safety of family and friends and so on).

Next, I would like to know the equipment costs and hosting costs of setting up a blog.

I do have a family budget and responsibilities so I need to know the total costs associated with blogging and any possible off-setting revenues.

39 Ledger1  Thu, Aug 14, 2008 8:11:30pm

Take two:

I would prefer to setup a blog like zombie time with the anonym of zb (personal safety of family and friends and so on).

Next, I would like to know the equipment costs and hosting costs of setting up a blog.

I do have a family budget and responsibilities so I need to know the total costs associated with blogging and any possible off-setting revenues.

Well, my situation is a bit unique, so I can't say exactly what your "costs" will be. But:

First of all, it doesn't cost a cent to set up a blog -- as long as you don't mind using one of the many free blog services, such as WordPress, Blogger, etc. It's simple enough -- just go to any of the free hosting sites and follow the steps to set up your blog.

This Google search for "free blogs" will set you on the trail with all the links you need.

Personally, I like the style of WordPress better than Blogger, but there are literally dozens of other options as well that I know nothing about.

As far as anonymity is concerned: Simply don't reveal anything about yourself on your blog, and you're safe. And that includes your email address -- it you want to ensure anonymity, don't use the same email address you use in your private life. Get a throwaway email address from any of the mainstream sites, like Yahoo, etc.

Those free hosting sites are good enough for 99% of people, because most people don't get anywhere near enough visitors for it to matter.

However, if you want to take it up a notch, you can reserve your own domain name, which makes your blog be personalized and stand out. However, be aware for maximum anonymity, that you get a hosting company to reserve the domain for you -- otherwise, if someone does a "whois," they can see who owns your blog.

Reserving a domain is not very expensive -- somewhere between $20 to $35 per year, I think, depending on how you do it. Then to host your private domain blog, at the beginning it will only cost you $10/month maximum, because you pay by the bandwidth, and new blogs generally don't get many visitors. Some hosting companies are even cheaper -- $6/month and so on.

Later, if you become famous, and have to pay more per month, hopefully you can put ads on your blog, and the ads will actually bring in more revenue than the hosting costs are. I'm actually quite ignorant about ads, so others can answer those questions better than I can.

As for equipment -- you're typing on it! No equipment needed besides your home computer.

So, really, the costs are minimal. In fact, you can have a blog up in ten minutes.

The main questions are: What are you going to put on it? What will make it unique? What will attract visitors? That's where you've got to put your energy.
