OK, I bought an HDTV for use in my studio. My idea was that it would double as a monitor for my computer (which is the way I have it configured now).
It is a good one, a Samsung 22". But, it seems to be a little rough on the peepers. Does anyone know why? I am about 2 feet away from it, and my vision is 20/20.

No sweat. We survived the nazis. We've been living through generations of cold war. Global jihad has entered the mix, recently, but at least we're beginning to wise to it. Not that much has changed. We just keep letting ourselves get complacent during the lulls, thinking somehow that that should be the natural state of the world, even though it never has been.

The little "m" is throwing me off the most.

I have yet to see a refresh rate in anything other than Hz. I have displays in the lab up to 24", and once as a joke I put a 50" Plasma TV on the boss' desk as a monitor. Actually got the settings working pretty nicely.

The bad thing is he kind of liked it. We had to take it away from him before he hurt himself. ;)

It is then fair to say, after a basic investigation into this matter, that Obama is NOT an American (in the TRUE and LEGAL sense of the word) and that he WAS in fact a Muslim for most of his early life (this has been already confirmed by other sources, read “The Hussein Dynamic“).

It is now up to the proper authorities (FEC) to investigate further into Barack Obama’s/Barry Soetoro’s legal background and either confirm or finally disqualify him from running towards the Presidency of the United States.

I think Savage is a little nutty on this one. It ain't gonna happen.

UAB Spam Data Mine Uncovers Russian-Georgian Escalation

The UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) Spam Data Mine is seeing new escalations in the so-called "Russian-Georgian Cyber War". More than 500 e-mails were received in a 90 minutes period this morning at UAB claiming to be a BBC story revealing that Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili is homosexual.

“Clicking on the headline or the image, which is really being loaded from the BBC Web site, will take e-mail readers to a virus-laden Web page,” said Gary Warner, UAB Director of Computer Forensics Research. “The danger is that almost no anti-virus products detected this virus when it began to be distributed this morning. Only 4 of 36 anti-virus products knew that this was a suspicious file in our tests this morning.”

My trainer is from the Ukraine originally (now naturalized). He is an enormous man, barrel chested, benches his own weight easily. I asked him how he got in such great shape, he said, without humor
"I buried the dead".

I was at a Japanese steak house, and two high school girls were flirting with the cook, from Laos. They asked him why he came here, the implication being "here" is lame. He said, "Because I was taken up on a truck at 13 to be forced into the Army. My parents got me out and we fled here before they could come back for me." He was still smiling and matter-of-fact, but the girls were quiet and probably learned a good lesson.

McCain and Obama were tied today on the Gallup Poll, both at 44% first time since Hillary dropped out. Everybody knows that Obama polls higher than he gets, routinely ten points discrepancy such as in CA and NH.

This means McCain is substantially ahead and this fact will reek havoc at the convention with the Clinstones. This is going to be more fun than 1968!

They were tied at 44 for 2 days a couple weeks back.

But it is great news nonetheless. Especially when you consider a few things:

1) 2 days ago it was 6 points. Gallup runs a three day average, so we are seeing a 6 point shift in an averaged poll - that means things may be +2 McCain tomorrow.

2) It is a registered voter poll, not likely voter. Registered voter samples tend to pad Democrats by 2 to 3 points.

Not looking good for the O team.

Polls are increasingly less reliable. People with land lines may be more conservative and traditional or they may be liberal retirees or they may be stay at home welfare recipients. The pollsters depend on published phone numbers of home land lines. Like many people I switched to my cell phone and dropped the land line. How that skews the sample for or against either party I don't know. Without serious research no one knows and the pollsters resort to speculation.

US demographics have always been in flux. At 1st, the "majority" were English descendents. Then, as time went on, it became more Eoro-centric (Germans, Italians, etc matched numbers). True, they were all still caucasion, but again what changed?

The key will be assimilation, not numbers. Will Hispanics for the most part do what my Italian grandmother did (assimilate to America in society, yet keep her Italian heritage alive at home). African Americans, even with some cultural divides aren't any different than me.

US demographics have always been in flux.

Here is a fasinating map of the US based on "ancestry." It shows the plurality, or what ethnic group has the most, if not the majority in the area.

My favorite part is the wide swath through the Bible Belt (and presumably people of Scotch-Irish, English, and German decent) we have people who refuse to see themselves as anything but "American." More people gave the "American" answer than anything in those areas.

As far as "in their own language", I somewhat agree and get frustrated with the 'Press 1 for English" I would love to see an amendment that states English is THE language, but I'm not holding my breath. With the current wave on Latino immigration (both legal and illegal) I look at it as a safety issue that many things are in Spanish as well as English. I'm positive (seeing their children are going to our PUBLIC schools ) that the next generation of Latinos will be fluent in English.

Busy couple few months (well years really). CIA software in DC (sneaky stuff, alway fun). Vision enhancing stuff (IEDs) in Dallas and now; new threat = new armor in CA (Don't ask, F**kin' Chinese!). Hello,

Just dropped in to say hi. Keeping track with you guys as best I can. I don't want to here about weekends (what's that?) or bloody vacations!

Busy couple few months (well years really). CIA software in DC (sneaky stuff, alway fun). Vision enhancing stuff (IEDs) in Dallas and now; new threat = new armor in CA (Don't ask, F**kin' Chinese!). And all that after I got to hang around while USN shot down a dying satellite with last year's missile (just wait hehehe...).

Not bad for an old retired guy. I plan to keel-over dead eventually, if I can schedule it.

well come on greg..don't tease us.Since you started telling us a story
give some more details...what new armour? you hung around while the navy shot down a satellite? hung around where? and what am i waiting for?
jeez work with me here greg :)

Russian convoy moves deeper inside Georgia:
Fri Aug 15, 2008 3:28pm EDT

IGOETI, Georgia (Reuters) - A Russian military convoy advanced to a village 45 km (30 miles) from Tbilisi on Friday, in the deepest incursion since conflict with Georgia erupted last week.

The advance of about 17 armored personnel carriers (APCs) and about 200 soldiers coincided with a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to secure Georgia's signature on a French-brokered peace plan to end the fighting.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said tanks had also advanced on another two towns -- Khashari and Borjomi -- in central Georgia, but the information could not be independently verified.

I was asking around at work today, and they were asking if I was interested in art of natural history. St. Louis has a pretty world-class art museum, so I'd be inclined to look at mummies and Chinese vases and Neanderthal dioramas instead.

I know I won't have time to do any of it justice. I'm leaning toward the Museum of the American Indian.

DNC Chair Howard Dean Calls GOP the ‘White’ Party

if ya can't succeed, find a stupid wife to support you and then destroy your country

Howard Dean best get his nose out of his medical journals and look up a little bit of not so long-ago history. It is the DEMOCRATS who are the "White Party" - not the Republicans.

It was the Democrats that supported slavery before the Civil War.

It was the Democrats that passed all of the Jim Crow and segregation laws after the Civil War.

The KKK were all - you've got it - DEMOCRATS.

The entire South voted DEMOCRAT for a hundred years after the Civil War.

And for all those reasons Martin Luther King was a REPUBLICAN!

For an open thread.

I was watching the DVD "Miracle" on my laptop on the flight over here. It's one of my faves. Below is the speech Kurt Russell (playing Coach Herb Brooks) gives to the American hockey team before they achieve the Miracle on Ice in the 1980 Winter Games. Awesome stuff, and with the resurgence of fascist Russia, more than a little interesting.

Herb Brooks: Great moments... are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here, tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game. If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it.

Heh. Looks like the G-8 is toast.

GWB said:

Secretary of Defense Gates will keep me briefed on the humanitarian assistance to the people of Georgia. We're working closely with our partners in Europe and other members of the G7 to bring a resolution to this crisis.

The press gaggle amplified that:

Q: Along that line, the President referred today to consulting with other leaders of the G7, which I thought was interesting. Does that portend that there's going to be more employment of the G7 as a framework, as opposed to the G8?

MR. JOHNDROE: You know, to step back I think to the broader point of your question, let me answer it this way: Our immediate focus is that the violence stop, the Russian forces withdraw, we get back to the status quo ante of August 6th. There will be a time and a place to deal with what the repercussions of all this is.

But we will continue to work with the G7 partners because those are the countries that you would naturally work with. Many of them -- those are our NATO allies. Those are EU countries. So when we work with our G7 partners, we're working with France, UK, Italy, Germany. So these are the appropriate countries to be working with to deal with the situation with Russia.

Q: But it had to be deliberate, though, for him to say G7, right?

MR. JOHNDROE: Well --

Q: -- not Russia in the G8?

MR. JOHNDROE: -- but this is based on -- we are working with these countries because of the actions that Russia has taken. So these are the natural allies that we would work with and that we're standing with to deal with the situation with Russia.

Q: The President could have said NATO allies, though.

MR. JOHNDROE: It's a combination. They are NATO, they are EU, and they are G7 allies.

Q: Is it sort of a veiled kind of a threat to tell Russia that maybe they won't be a part of the G8?

MR. JOHNDROE: There will be a time and a place to deal with the consequences and the repercussions of Russia's actions.

Just say that the "Missile" community is still true to President Reagan

"Tonight, consistent with our obligations of the ABM treaty and recognizing the need for closer consultation with our allies, I'm taking an important first step. I am directing a comprehensive and intensive effort to define a long-term research and development program to begin to achieve our ultimate goal of eliminating the threat posed by strategic nuclear missiles. This could pave the way for arms control measures to eliminate the weapons themselves. We seek neither military superiority nor political advantage. Our only purpose -- one all people share -- is to search for ways to reduce the danger of nuclear war. " -March 23, 1983

So the dentist says, "okay, we'll have to go with the gas."

The man replies, "absolutely not. It makes me very sick for a couple of days. I'm not having gas."

So the dentist steps out and comes back with a glass of water, "here," he says. "Take this pill."

The man asks "What is it?"

The doc replies, "Viagra."

The man looks surprised, "will that kill the pain?" he asks.

"No," replies the dentist, "but it will give you something to hang on to while I pull your tooth!"

AUGUST 15--Following an undercover operation, Colorado police this month broke up a prostitution operation running out of a massage parlor known as Tokyo Sauna. Broomfield Police Department officers arrested a 54-year-old woman on a prostitution charge and a 65-year-old male customer for patronizing a hooker. But the big catch was the 48-year-old woman who allegedly ran the prostitution operation. She was charged with pimping, pandering, and keeping a place of prostitution. Mi Sook You is her name. Honest. She is pictured below in a mug shot taken following her August 6 arrest. (2 pages)

I just have to vent on the complete insanity of congress. They cannot be bothered to seriously address the energy situation but Rep Conyers can ask for a return to congress to file impeachment articles against a president who has only 4 months left in his term! What a GD waste of taxpayer money.

Why anybody would thing it wise to elect both a democrat president and congress at the same time would bring anything good to our country.

Oh & I do not know if I can stand the word "change" with no ideas whatsoever about what "change" might mean. It seems like so many on the left are just plain angry and want some sort of revenge. That will never be a reason for "change".

More right than the story says; Sook is a variant the name Suk which is pronounced precicely as that action in English.

I know a very pretty girl in Japan who is conversely named "Aguri" the self introduction of which always gived foreigners a double take. One friend her calls her the pretty girl with the "ugly" name.

I expected some loon poster at Huffpo or Kos would claim that the Russian invasion of George was cooked up by Bush and or McCain in order to make the Republicans look more palatable, but The Nation?

Here it is

[Link: www.thenation.com...]

The Nation once again going slap-your-knee stupid with a tissue thin story that, since a McCain staffer used to be a lobbyist hired by Georgia, then McCain cooked up the Russian invasion. The story has more holes in it than pair of Seattle blue jeans, but hey who cares? They managed to blame it on President Bush and Senator McCain, which is finally all that matters.

But why write the story? Because the supercilious response of Obama hurt him with the voters, especially the voters who were around for the Cold War.

And The Nation has been around long enough to know it.

In earlier generations, there were nightschools where immigrants learned English. There were few if any benefits for anyone--citizen or not--and certainly not for illegals; if you wanted to be able to vote you had to learn English and become a citizen, and you had to learn the basics of how the country worked to become a citizen.

None of that exists now. We give benefits to illegals, we do not pressure even legal immigrants to learn English. We do not absorb immigrants; we merely acquire them.

Immigrants used to practice blending in.

"Georgian troops and South Ossetian rebels". The other feed with
translations says they were held "by the militia" for 4 days after they
were captured.

South Ossetian rebles...a militia...so how do you conclude it's "Russian
military" shooting at them?

From what I've heard the South Ossetians have been going hog wild.
Looting villages, burning homes, terrorizing Georgians, the kind of stuff
normally associated with "ethnic cleansing" if it's done by someone from
a different country. The Russians don't seem to have lifted a finger to
stop it but that doesn't mean they're the ones doing it.

The data from NavTec or TeleAtlas is converted into a proprietary format which is optimized for a very specialized and very fast search engine. Google buys a license for that engine from a vendor and uses that subsystem in the Google Earth displays.

There is a server-side API which the Google web developers can use to perform searches and call up the displays.

Data updates come monthly or quarterly and Google does not have much control over them.

As noted in other comments, the underlying data is sketchy outside the US, Canada, Australia, and Western Europe. Detailed, accurate data from the gray regions is simply not coded and available for Google to purchase. It will take many years and quite a bit of money to change that.
