How does one prepare for the unforeseen? Wouldn't preparations for things yet to happen indicate some foresight (or "foreseeingness", as it were)?

OHIO:
PPP (a very Dem firm) has Ohio tied at 45- 45. Great news for McCain! It probably understates McCain's support because the poll had 56% female and 44% male respondents. Huh?

On my Firefox, the search tool at top right also defaulted to Google. By clicking the down-arrow thing on it, one can choose Manage Search Engines. I added dogpile some time ago. It seems to remember the last-used search engine as the new default.

“Michael Graves of the Misfits

Ted Nugent

Alice Cooper

Danny Elfman

Neil Peart of Rush

Kid Rock

C.C. Deville (of Poison)

James Hetfield (of Metallica)

Dave Mustaine (formerly of Metallica, now Megadeth)

Gene Simmons

Britney Spears (note: insane)

Jessica Simpson

Chaka Khan

Frankie Avalon

Jeff “Skunk” Baxter

and Meat Loaf.

And more country singers, of course, than you can shake a stick at.”

Serious question:

Why did obambi tilt his head to his right continually during his q and a with the reverend?

I've heard that that's a classic sign (body language) of lying, or of no confidence/personal belief in what you are saying. Look also for blinking (especially loooonnnnnnnng blinking) and avoiding eye contact altogether.

Heh.

re: #92 hermeneutics

I believe (but am not sure) that tilting of the head indicates that one is trying to figure out a person's motivation or feelings. Thus, Obama was trying to understand his questioner's motive.

I was talking more about when he's on stage giving one of his scripted hope and change talks. Like esch said, it's a real look down your nose pose.

112 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)  Sun, Aug 17, 2008 11:30:22pm

Dems are getting nervous about this whole "hope" thing:

Allies Ask Obama to Make ‘Hope’ Specific

party leaders — while enthusiastic about Mr. Obama and his state-by-state campaign operations — say he must do more to convince the many undecided Democrats and independents that he would address their financial anxieties rather than run, by and large, as an agent of change — given that change, they note, is not an issue.

“I particularly hope he strengthens his economic message — even Senator Obama can speak more clearly and specifically about the kitchen-table, bread-and-butter issues like high energy costs,” said Gov. Ted Strickland of Ohio. “It’s fine to tell people about hope and change, but you have to have plenty of concrete, pragmatic ideas that bring hope and change to life.”

Or, in the blunter words of Gov. Phil Bredesen, Democrat of Tennessee: “Instead of giving big speeches at big stadiums, he needs to give straight-up 10-word answers to people at Wal-Mart about how he would improve their lives.”

Obama's real hope; that he could have avoided this a bit longer.

Oh, great. Just great. Now someone's broken the code. Obama's election is assured at last...Will Obama play in Arkansas?

Ms. Burrow, a lifelong Democrat, was discomfited to learn from a recent article in The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that she is distantly related to Mr. Obama, whose maternal ancestors helped settle the Ozarks. “I don’t claim him,” she said, as she played dominoes and talked politics with a group of friends.

Ms. Burrow said she would not vote for Mr. Obama because she believed he is either a Muslim or would, if elected, rejoin Trinity United Church of Christ, the Chicago congregation that he left after a controversy over the former minister’s racial views.

Ms. Burrow’s son, Dennis, tried to convince her that Mr. Obama was not a Muslim.

“He’d have to come to my home and eat some of my purple-hull peas before I’d believe him,” Ms. Burrow said. “And my fried okra. Anyone that breaks bread with me, I’d have more confidence in him.”

So to summarize, if Barack Obama eats peas and okra with every aging Democrat in the state between now and November, he stands a strong chance at walking away with Arkansas’ six electoral votes.

He just has to tell everything that he knows, he does.

Yeah you'll notice it a lot with people with Asperger's (like myself). It's not meant to be rude. It's part of an internal, often visual synthesis of the topic and formulation of the reply. Basically, it's hard to concentrate fully when looking someone in the eye. I know it's weird.

Yeah, a lot of times we Aspergers people come across as rude or strange, when really we may well have no idea what we're doing "wrong"... Just trying to cope, is all.

I've seen some funny behavior from Obambimessiah, he may be a bit socially stunted and is trying to over-compensate with his "community organizer" identity, but I don't see him having a full-on syndrome of any sort. You know, there are all kinds of theories and maxims on that sort of thing ("a person is lying when they look up and to the left", etc.) but those kinds of things should be taken as loose guidelines at best... Billy Jeff Clinton never showed anything in his eyes, but the left corner of his mouth elevated a touch when he was bullshitting, and we know that that was most of the time; he managed to pass it off as affable charm.

I thought about doing that off and on since 2000 and in light of events over the past ten days, I thought I'd 'adopt' Georgia. Of course, before I even decided on that, I belatedly found out that Georgia has already won two gold medals (Judo & Greco-Roman wrestling) and a bronze (shooting or archery...I forget which).

Amen to that. I didn't find out for sure until I was 26/27 (about two years ago). I've had to basically re-tool my mental model of humanity from the ground up. In some respects it's much easier to problem-solve as an adult, and in other ways, as you said, "I wish I had been told this when I was a preteen" because life would have been so much less confusing, unfocused, and painful.

On a technical note, I've found that a lot of my problems increase in severity depending on diet. My current theory is that sugary stuff is just plain bad fuel for my brain. If you've got a kid with Aspergers, do try to keep him the hell away from junk food - there has been research that indicates carb-heavy eating is bad for Autistic symptoms and my experiences match those findings.

So, one maintains eye contact with Arabs and avoids it with Asians. Interesting!

/lots of room to roam in the definition of game theory

The part of it that has to do with human decision-making, iterations, and so-called optimal strategies. They've been getting it wrong since 1944 and no one seems to realize it. Well, not "wrong" so much as focusing on one special-case scenario. (Just as Newton unwittingly did in physics: he wasn't "wrong", just merely describing a single optimal state.)

There are just too many unacknowledged assumptions built into how human-centric game theory is analyzed, assumptions which ignore reality. Game theory has traditionally focused on decisions, but that to me is the "trivial" aspect; much more important are motivations, which are rarely discussed.

I try not to rely on my entertainers for political advice. That said...

I think that I'd really like to talk to Mike Rowe at a party. He seems like a nice guy who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty.

I'd like to talk cars with Jay Leno, and see if I could manage to steal the keys to his garage.

That Niles Crane character that the little blond guy played just cracks me up. So rare to see a fop played in today's world.

I've been generally amused by Owen Wilson. He doesn't seem to take himself too seriously. If you know different, please don't tell me.

And I guess that's about it. I just don't watch enough TV or movies to have much of an opinion. But I did hear that Jessica Simpson worked with a personal trainer for a solid year to get the legs to play Daisy Duke. Time well spent, if I may say so.

Other than that, I guess my star-struckness is pretty lame.

Where I live most of the women have facelifts around age 40. They hide their recent surgeries behind big glasses. The joke here is that the women wearing glasses indoors are those who just had their eyes done.

Sick, but true.

Thank you for taking the Creativity Test. The results show your brain dominance as being:

Left Brain Right Brain
54% 46%

You are more left-brained than right-brained. Your left brain controls the right side of your body. In addition to being known as left-brained, you are also known as a critical thinker who uses logic and sense to collect information. You are able to retain this information through the use of numbers, words, and symbols. You usually only see parts of the "whole" picture, but this is what guides you step-by-step in a logical manner to your conclusion. Concise words, numerical and written formulas and technological systems are often forms of expression for you. Some occupations usually held by a left-brained person include a lab scientist, banker, judge, lawyer, mathematician, librarian, and skating judge.

i am so screwed...

Another discovery from Karradine's PDF:

"During the Hajj, pilgrims must be in a state of ihram (consecration or blessing). Men typically wear two pieces of white unstitched cloth – covering the waist and legs, the other around the shoulders covering the upper body."

Compare with this:

"Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout."--John 19:23

I wonder what significance that has in ME culture?

Well, having a seaport on the Black Sea means your only access to the oceans at large is via the Bosporus. That was a huge drawback to Russian seapower.

In normal peaceful times, a seaport is a seaport. In time of war, a seaport on a land-locked sea isn't much of a military advantage.

Musharraf said in a televised speech that he will turn in his resignation to the National Assembly speaker later Monday. He said he leaves office knowing whatever he has done "was for the people and for the country."

"I hope the nation and the people will forgive my mistakes," Musharraf said.

It was not immediately clear whether Musharraf would stay in Pakistan. He said his fate was in the hands of the Pakistani people.

Now, that's plain tacky, besides being bad policy. Musharraf hasn't exactly been unswervingly loyal to the U.S., but he's been cooperative to some extent. What sort of message does that send to other third-world dictators when it comes to weighing the benefits of coming on-side in the War on Terror?

Rice has been a real disaster in State.

Could be a pinched-back. First check the paw and in-between toes for a sore or burr. If nothing, pinch gently along both sides of the spine with 2-fingers, starting at tail and working about half-way up the back. You'll get a response if back-pinched.

I've got a question here. I'm reading the article Life Lies listed above in the links. The very first paragraph reads -

In 2001, Senator Barack Obama was the only member of the Illinois senate to speak against a bill that would have recognized premature abortion survivors as “persons.” The bill was in response to a Chicago-area hospital that was leaving such babies to die. Obama voted “present” on the bill after denouncing it. It passed the state Senate but died in a state house committee.

Does anyone know which particular Chicago area hospital this was taking place at? It would be amusing/telling if that particular Chicago-area hospital happened to be the hospital that pays Michelle so well.

What about Dionne Warwick's Psychic Friends network filing for bankruptcy? How come they didn't see that coming?

Well I guess if their batting average was bad enough, bankruptcy would be a foregone conclusion, and perforce, they would be unable to foresee it.

In other words, if you patronized the Psychic Friends Network, and consistently acted contrary to their prophecies, you'd be a net winner.

Which, ironically, would in fact make them effective in spite of themselves.

A couple of odd things - I noticed last night that one of the people on Fox called Obama either "Mr. Obama" or just "Obama" every time she referred to him, but McCain was Senator McCain every single time. I thought that was telling.

Also, there is a story up top - Life Lies. In reading it I noticed that Illinois tried to pass that Born Alive legislation in response to a particular Chicago-area hospital which was setting this infants aside to die. Anybody know what hospital that is? Doesn't Michelle Obama hold a very well paid position in a Chicago area hospital?

Michelle Obama works for the University of Chicago Medical Center, heading up Community Outreach (Largely , a make believe job)
When that vote came up in the Illinois Senate ,the driving issue was a local Chicago hospital network , according to the Chicago Tribune that the Obama's held an interest in. I believe either Advocate or Adventist.

I hear you there! My Dad lives in Florida - no thank you. Though I will tell you I used to have a Canadian friend from the Toronto area that one winter could simply not get away, so he had several truckloads of sand dumped into the basement, set up a huge bunch of sun lamps, lawn chairs and beach umbrellas and then proceeded to throw a Winter Party. I've always found that amusing along about mid February.

I've often thought that a bar built upon this concept would be a real winner. Get a big barn of a building, scoop out a large pond in the center, and surround it by sand. Equip it with sunlamps, a floating swim-up bar, and beach bars, and pool toys. Have entrance by way of change rooms, where patrons would switch from street clothes to swimsuits.

You'd have to have lifeguards on duty, of course, even if the water were not deep.

Jordan wants Kurt Westergaards - the guy whom drew the cartoon of Mo - extradited for prosecution on charges of blasphemy. Like it was possible to blaspheme a heathen cult.

Even so the colourfull cartoonist, who is often seen in flamboyant clothes and dark red trousers, insist on keeping on with making jokes of the situation.

With the indictment in Jordan, he risks three years prison, wherefore Kurt Westergaard has sent a mail to the Jordanian embassy. But not to appologise.

"I have asked if I – like back here – can have a cell with colour television and access to the library, if I go down there. And I have enquired if I can have pig chops two times a week, since that is a normal dish here in Denmark – so I suppose they’ll accomadate an old man like me."

...

"If I appologise, I will have lost all professional honour. I have only done my job. I made a drawing, because it provoked me, that terrorists used religion to justify terrorism. I will never appologise"

Who owns Christ Hospital? In much of the country most of the "independents" are actually satellites of the larger "university" hospitals these days.

Yeah, the $350,000 she makes is way, way out of line. By way of contrast, the POTUS makes $400,000. On 911 the then RedX national director was making $450,000. Michelle has no medical degree or training and has long since given up her law degree . . . . .

BINGO! Yes that's the one thing I thought of, besides don't discount the possibilities of "flashers", and other such incidents. It sounds like a good idea, but I would rather do it for myself and fellow friends. The insurance and liability you would need could be ruinous. Yes, election season can make it very hard to maintain relationships if you are not a flaming liberal. Last time around I hung up on my sister about every 5 hours rather than tell her what a complete ignoramus she was. This time, by sheer miracle (and it is!) everyone in the family has independently decided that under no circumstances will that vote Obama. It was a huge surprise.

It is online I believe if you wanted to watch it. "Weak" is not exactly the word I would choose. He appeared to be very comfortable in front of the audience. Did things like slouch and not wear a tie to make himself come off as relaxed and open. He didn't handle some of the tougher questions well though. And while his hmmming and hawing might give an impression of "thoughtfulness" he also gave an impression of not ever having closely examined himself or his actions and having big problems making moral decisions. Nor really comfortable in his own skin.

All in all he wasn't "bad" - he just wasn't Presidential by a very long shot. The job might come with a lot of power and prestige (that is the part Obama sees) but is also carries more responsibility that any other single job in the entire world. Responsibility that requires a very firm moral stance and the ability to make a decision on the turn of a dime. Obama has neither of those things and he never will.

A good father is definitely not supposed to keep his kids at home. A good father gives his children sound moral principles, enough discipline that they can discipline themselves, the ability to make a decision and the character to take responsibility for decisions that they make. And then the good parent shoves their children out of the nest and lets them fly.

re: #428 galloping granny

I went to school in the South for a few years growing up. We didn't have air conditioning then at all. If it got too hot inside, we would take the books outside under a tree.

It's funny, I joke about having to walk to school uphill both ways, but my mother actually did have to do that. She lived in a very small town in CT, one room school and all, and she lived at the top of a large hill. The school was also on a hill. And she had to walk home for lunch everyday as well. The whole walk was probably about three miles. Today, if there is no sidewalk in your neighborhood, the bus stops at the end of your driveway and won't drop off if there isn't anyone there to pick the kid up. It is sad, both that the kids are coddled like this, and that we feel like we have to in order to protect them.

I should'nt have told him about my Army days....a good Father is supposed to keep his kids at home and I failed.

You told him about the hookers?!

re: #430 galloping granny

Is that the one with the medical school? Or do both U of Chicago and University of Illinois at Chicago have medical schools?

They both do. UIC is the medical school for the U of I system.
University of Chicago is independent. They view themselves as a Center of Excellence in oncology. In reality they are more of a research hospital rather than a treating facility.
The smart move for treatment in my opnioion is Northwestern.
Michelle Obama's job at the U of Chicago facility apparently requires her to do pretty much nothing.

Chris Rock said this. If you are the father of a daughter, you have one job...keeping her off of the "pole".

He didn't refer to sons, but I'd rather have my kid in boot camp than sitting at home with the latest hot video game.

That would be because Michelle Obama, lacking either scientific or medical training and having surrendered her law license, is qualified to do pretty much nothing in a medical &/or research setting.

Apparently there is a strong connection between Wright, Obama and Christ. I posted the link above.

A good father is not suppose to keep his kids at home, a good father ensures that his children grow up strong and prepared to survive in a world that does not care if they live or die.
