Why I am Voting Democrat this November...

I'm voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a much better job of spending the money I earn than I would spending it on my family.

I'm voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

I'm voting Democrat because the minute we pull out our troops out of Iraq, I trust that the bad guys will stop what they're doing because they now think we're good people.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell me if it will rain during our picnic this Saturday CAN tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away and the polar bears will drown in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius or taking public transportation, even as they continue to fly in their Lear Jets to tell us how we're killing the planet while they're flying to their numerous mansions.

I'm voting Democrat because I'm not concerned about the slaughter of millions of unborn babies so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that businesses should not be allowed to keep most of their profits for themselves. They need to give most of their profits to the government for redistribution as us compassionate liberals see fit.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe four or five pointy-headed elitist liberal judges need to rewrite the Constitution whenever they see fit to suit some other pointy-headed elitist kook-fringe liberals who would NEVER get their agendas past the American voters.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that when the terrorists don't have to hide from us over there, then they come over here, and we don't have any guns in the house to fight them off with, they're just go back home.

I'm voting Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whoever and whatever I want. I've decided to marry myself.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 8 cents on a gallon of gas are obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of gas 60 cents isn't, and because those evil oil men at Exxon-Mobil made $4000 a second profit is ripping us off, but Exxon-Mobil paying $14,000 a second in taxes to the government sounds fair to me.

Actually, I'll NEVER vote democrat...

UAW endorses Obama for president

[UAW President Ron] Gettelfinger cites Obama's promise of $4 billion in low-cost financing for automakers to retool to make more fuel-efficient vehicles.

OT-please excuse the interuption

I received this information earlier today, and have posted it on a
3 or 4 threads already. Some have bnot seen this yet. It is for them and the interested that I re-post it here.

My son Todd, who is on the Staff at Saddleback church, sent me
a letter from Dr. Rick Warren to all his staff to set some rumors and out-right lies to rest. I send it to you verbatim.

It is my intention to post this letter to other threads tomorrow as well.

To: Everyone - SVCC
Subject: Stupid Rumor/ and other thoughts

Dear Saddleback Staff,

We're being swamped with positive comments about the format of the forum, about both candidates, and about how people learned more about each of them than they knew before and actually seemed to appreciate both men more than before. If we can increase the level of civility and lower the level of "gotcha" partisanship in this election cycle, that will be a great thing. I was personally pleased with the way both men's personalities shown out and I wrote a personal congratulations to both men on the fine jobs they did. I was proud of both of them

However, it seems that somebody who didn't like the Forum is systematically calling media to raise questions about McCain possibly hearing part of the Forum. Of course McCain didn't hear anything. Both men agreed to the terms of the Forum and I trust both of them. They are questioning the integrity of McCain, the Secret Service, and our own security.

Actually, I'm afraid this rumor will hurt the Obama campaign, because if someone asks me, I'll have to say that I told Barack in advance about one of the questions, that I never got a chance to tell John McCain about because he wasn't on campus yet.

I did an interview with Dan from Beliefnet which felt pretty antagonistic. He charged "An anonymous source told me that John McCain was watching a monitor in his green room." Flat out Impossible! But Dan had called Tim Farley at XM radio and talked to Tim about this. Other media had been called too. Whoever is spreading this, is going to look like a fool when the truth gets out, and it may have repercussions. Of course, everyone is trying to force me to take sides, which I steadfastly refuse to do. But pray for me because this dishonest rumor angers me.

Here are some facts

1. There were Secret service staff and Saddleback staff with McCain with him thee, and there was no way McCain could have listened to anything without being seen. There were cameras on him when he arrived.

2. "When I said 'cone of silence' I was obviously being silly-the crowd laughed at the obvious metaphor reference to Get Smart. But Senator McCain was put in a green room in a DIFFERENT BUILDING without any contact.

3 Chuck Taylor, Saddleback staff member DISCONNECTED the TV from the source as part of creating a silent green room. If anyone had even tried to turn the TV in that room all they would have got was static!

The truth is , both candidates did an OUTSTANDING JOB at the Forum. They were both articulate, and not only did America get to hear their different views for America's future, but we got to see their God-given personalities (their SHAPE) in action.

I am overwhelmed by the incredible work of our staff team, the leadership of Erik, David, and so many others of you who played a vital role in pulling off the weekend. WOW! I thank God for you, for your service, for your talent, and for the great testimony it was to the world.

Today, I received word from the President of the nation of Georgia (which has been under attack by Russia). In near tears, he thanked Saddleback Church for mentioning his country under attack during the forum for the whole world to hear.

He had watched the Saddleback Civil Forum in his nation, and was so moved that their situation was mentioned, and he asked me to personally ask our church and our network of churches to pray for Georgia in this crisis.

Rick

OT OPEN QUESTION to our military minded LGF'ers.

Soldiers killed in battle, in this case Vietnam, had "toe tags." Do any of you know if that was the small metal version of the dog tag, or the paper type tag we see in movies like in morgue shots.

I am starting to prop out our next show "Summertree" and I need a Vietnam era "toe tag" but the script doesn't specify, metal, paper or what.

I've done some googling, but some descriptions are not that clear.

Yes, and there is a rubber liner that goes around them so they do not make noise. I don't think the toe bit is accurate, that is for civilian morgues. Plus, many military casualties have missing body parts. The one that stayed with the body was often placed between the top front incisors.

Ok, but I found a website that sells metal dog tags, and they mention standard size ones and the smaller ones being used as toe tags, so I'm curious.

I guess what I am most concerned about is 1) A Vietnam era toe tag would be metal, similar to a dog tag, and 2) not the paper ones we see in morgue shots in movies.

The dogtags issued are a standard size. There were no toe tag versions. The rubber edge was a sleeve that fit around the tags. I don't know how old that innovation is but you will see some movies and t.v. shows that the soldiers used gun tape to wrap around them to silence them and to remove the shine from the metal.

Ok, this from a website that makes tags, from WWII style and up.

"However, tags have numerous good uses and when you order more than one complete set, the cost per tag decreases. The military isses two dog tags per soldier. The reason is that as morbid as it may sound, in the unfortunate situation of a soldier being killed in combat, one tag would stay with the soldier (usually on the smaller tag, called a toe tag, the other would go to next of kin). Obviously, you would not need two tags for such a purpose. However, if you have more than one complete set then you may tag other items or share similar messages with a friend or loved one. "

They mention small and large.

re: #65 Walter L. Newton

Ok, now I have a new description. I'm confused again. Small metal dog tag like, or 3"x6" luggage tag type?

dog tags are the small metal ovals with basic info stamped on them, Name, Social, Blood Type & Religious Pref, IIRC.

each soldier is supposed to have two, so that if they are KIA, one can be taken, assuming the body isn't evaced immediately, and one stays with the corpse. i was told, unofficially, that they best thing to do with that tag was to put it between the front teeth, on edge, and kick the jaw shut so that the tag would be weged between the teeth, where it could be recovered for forensic use.

the "toe tags" come in what looks like an oversize checkbook. the one i have is blue in color on the outside, with black printing, and the contents are fairly stiff paper (think 3x5 card texture) printed in English & French, and a carbon copy.

there are a variety of blocks to fill in, who, what, when, where, how, morphine given, etc.......

the original is affixed to the patient with the wire, and the carbon is kept by the medic for their records.

i'll see if i can find mine, or get current data from friends who are still in.

email is blue, should you wish to contact me off LGF regarding this. i'll be happy to help.

I think the company meant the little metal-beady chains, one of which was long (around the neck) and the other being about 2-inches in diameter, perfect for a toe-tag...

Another Saudi Arabian marital horror story.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- A forced marriage drove a 16-year-old Saudi girl to drink bleach rather than marry a 75-year-old man, she said.
Her own father was "swapping" her for the 13-year-old daughter of the other man, said the girl identified only as Shaikha, who saw suicide as her only way out of an unwanted marriage, Dubai's Online news service al-Arabiya reported Monday.
The 16-year-old described being taken to meet the old man and the 13-year-old in a marriage office where all had premarital tests done. Shaikha has since appealed to the National Society of Human Rights to stop the marriage, asking to go live with her mother, who is separated from her father.
At least one authority is in agreement while the case remains under investigation.
"Judges can punish men who force their daughters to marry like this," Sheikh Abdul Mohsin al-Obeikan, Shura Council member said, adding that the marriage contract was necessarily void because it violated Shariah law.

Some of the guys wore the long chain around the neck, and the other around either the wrist or laced in a boot. Mine were exactly the same size metal, in those days (67-68) we didn't use the social security number. It went RA =Regular Army., US=Draftee, NG=National Guard, ER=Enlisted Reserve, O= Officer, followed by 8 numbers, mine started with number RA 19 which = Regular enlistee, West Coast. My brother was drafted, his started US 56=Draftee West Coast. I don't know the other services system.

Yep, doing fine right now. I tried to get my sugery consult for my hernia pushed up sooner, since the damn thing is poking me on a daily basis, but no go.

So, I have to wait until next Monday. And then, I hope they schedule the darn thing ASAP. I don't know how many more weeks I can get along with this before it becomes nasty critical.

I'm hoping to get this done BEFORE our next show opens on Sept. 19th. I can get coverage during this show, but we are short one staff member during the next show.

Joke received via email today:

A public school teacher was arrested today at John F. Kennedy
International Airport as he attempted to board a flight while in
possession of a ruler, a protractor, a set square, a slide rule, and a
calculator. At a morning press conference, the Attorney General said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-gebra movement. He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

'Al-gebra is a problem for us,' the Attorney General said. 'They
desire solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on
tangents in a search of absolute value. They use secret code names like 'x' and 'y' and refer to themselves as 'unknowns,' but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, ''There are 3 sides to every triangle.''

When asked to comment on the arrest, Senator Obama said, 'If God had wanted us to have better Weapons of Math Instruction, he would have given us more fingers and toes.' Democratic leaders told reporters they could not recall a more intelligent or profound statement by the Senator.

World’s Financial Problems Solved: Afghan Hobo Finds $723 Trillion in Ditch

KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN (AP) — All financial problems worldwide were solved yesterday when a hobo from Kandahar found $723 trillion in a ditch.

“I was just looking for a shady place to lie down,” the unemployed vagabond said through a translator. “I prefer ditches, when I can find them. This seemed more comfortable than the average ditch, but then I realized, ‘Hey, I’m lying on money.’”

The hobo, who goes by the single name Abdul, hasn’t yet decided what he wants to do with the money. “They tell me there’s enough here to pay off all national debts, provide free health care for everyone in the world, to end starvation and eliminate class differences around the globe,” Abdul said. “But then where am I going to sleep?”

Upon hearing news of the discovery, Alan Greenspan, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve, said, “Well, looks like I wasted my entire life. Sixty years of studying economics and enforcing monetary policy for nothing. I could have been partying the whole time.”

In the late '90s I went back to school to finish up my Bachelor's (abandoned in 1965)... they made me take freshman math (2 f'ing semesters!). I was so afraid I'd fail, I studied almost 24/7 just hoping for a C. Got an A both semesters! And that including acing the Quadratic Formula!

Arrested in 1980, Muhammad Abu Ali had been jailed for life after killing 20-year-old yeshiva student Joshua Saloma in 1980. He was later convicted of killing a Palestinian in jail whom he had accused of collaborating with Israel.
In addition to these two prisoners, designated as having "blood on their hands," an additional 197 Palestinians convicted of terrorism were released.

Its hard to believe that someone was in jail for 28 years just for killing two people and one of them a Jew.

Israel is becoming a brutal country.

Trouble is with e-books is that most of them are sold by most publishers. And to format it takes some time since it's done mostly through an HTML format. There is some software out there that can do it, like MobiPocket for one. Unless she can find some company willing to take a risk, this one might die on the shelf.

Must be something like those Russian "peacekeepers" that seized the Georgian port of Poti this morning.

I did a cartoon once during the Bosnian conflict. The Serbs were moving to seize a certain town, (Gorazde) and the U.N. kept telling them "no" but not doing anything. In my cartoon, there's a motherly arm labeled "U.N.," an evil-looking kid labeled "Serbs," and a jar of cookies labeled "Gorazde Cookies."

The kid keeps moving to get himself some cookies...he has his hand on the lid, and the UN says, "NO cookies for you, young man!" Then the kid gets the lid off, on the UN pats him on the arm and says, "Now what did I tell you? NO cookies!" Then the kid gets the lid off and has his arm in the jar, and the UN slaps him lightly on the arm again and says, "If you take any cookies, you will be punished!" Finally you see the kid with an armful of cookies and his mouth stuffed with 2 or 3, and the UN says, "Oh, for heaven's sake! Very well, if you want the cookies, TAKE the cookies! But don't blame me if you've no appetite for supper!"

How many big companies would be willing to stoke that furnace of rage just waiting to burst forth. If it's a smaller company? That's even worse. I wish her the best of luck, and I hope some companies will grow a pair. Unfortunately the only company I can think of that has one mostly sells science fiction and fantasy. I worked for about 10 years in the bookselling business. Random House could certainly sell the publication rights back to the author or to another company, but chances are they have such a large investment into the book already, with advances and publication of the book, that the price they would ask would be prohibitive. The author likely could not afford it, and most publishers would shy away due to the cost and potential security issues. I am very disappointed in Random House for backing down on this. They are learning the same thing that so many others have already learned - give them an inch and they will want a mile.

It is a huge misconception that Freedom of Speech is something "given" to us or regulated by the government. It is exactly the opposite - something tht is an inherent right, one that the government cannot touch. When we - individually, collectively, corporately - cave in to this kind of ludicrous demand then we are willingly abandoning our right to freedom of speech. There is no "publisher did it on their own."

Mike Huckabee Goes To Jerusalem: Huckabee for POTUS! (dang, Mike for PM of Israel!)

Here is what he had to say:

While touring Governor Huckabee also had time to make statements and respond to questions from journalists.

Gov. Huckabee said he understood the need for a Palestinian state, but that it should not interfere with the Jewish one.

"There are many, many places where a homeland for the Palestinians could in fact take place that would be consistent with their roots," he said. "But there is only one place on earth where the Jewish people could have a homeland that is consistent with their roots."

He emphasized that the international community agreed to recognize clear, definitive boundaries of a Jewish homeland in Israel as early as 1919.

"We have a moral obligation to the Jewish people to honor the commitment that has been made through decades and decades of understanding that there is going to be a homeland for the Jewish people," he said.

"The question shouldn't be 'Do Arabs have a right to live in Jewish territory,'" said Gov. Huckabee, "but, 'Do Jews have a right to live in Jewish territory?'"

"To say that Jews can't live in Jerusalem is the equivalent of telling the Boston Red Sox they can't play in Fenway Park. Obviously, that would never go over very well on Beacon Hill."

Here is the rest of the article.

Tom Waits is the best of his genre (IMHO).

It sounds fine to say that "adults are responsible for their own actions", and in theory they are, but we live in an imperfect world and that is why rescue and emergency personnel are pledged to respond to all those in distress without regard to how they got there- that's for the insurance adjusters to determine after everybody is out of danger.

I think we've got two senses of the word "responsible" here. In the case of a false alarm the responsibility for turning in the alarm is that of the person who turned it in. In the case of responding to an alarm, well that is the responsibility of the first responders. And the reason it is the first responder's responsibility is is because when they gave you that badge you raised your hand and said that you would.

You gave your word.

Many good men and women have died because they gave their word that they would come when somebody called for help.

Good morning, all dear Lizards!

Did anyone sign up to get the All Important Text Message from Obama?

You mean give him my cell phone number so I can be pestered endlessly with requests to donate to his campaign? :-)

No.

You know, yesterday the Russians destroyed the Georgian port at Poti and sunk one of their coastguard boats. Looking at this link at the top that the Russian Baltic Fleet is approaching Sevastopol and the full on NATO special meeting (I cannot remember there ever being one of those before) I think I will go fill the tank and lay in some extra staples this morning.

Good point. I'd have to block the future ones. :) But then, I don't get many text messages so it would make my life more exciting. Heh.
