RoP Doesn't Strike in Restive Thailand

Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 8:31:05 am PDT

You may have noticed a sharp decline in the number of LGF posts about murderous attacks by Islamists in South Thailand. The reason: a “surge” by the Thai military.

The main reason for the drop in the violence was a change in counter-insurgency strategy with a more unified command structure. No longer were security personnel confined to the barracks and being on the defensive. Patrols became more regular and larger in number. As most of the terrorists operate in cells of 8 or less, the increased number of troops on patrols has meant that when the security forces have been ambushed, they have the numbers to fight back. For example, in May 2008, there were 18 ambushes on such patrols, but security forces only suffered one casualty and 8 injuries. On the other hand, the security forces themselves killed 25 terrorists in the first 6 months of 2008.

Raids with hundreds of personnel were also conducted in major terrorist strongholds and areas where cordoned off while houses and people were searched. Instead of arbitrarily detaining large numbers of villagers for 7 days at a military base for questioning and then for months at re-education camps, forensic equipment was now used to test for explosive residue and fingerprints were checked on the spot. Those who were not involved were released which has lead to better relations with the local community. Tip-offs started to increase and security forces now regularly find caches of weapons and training camps on raids.

Whether a corner has been turned or the progress can be maintained is still open to question, but there is no doubt there has been a dramatic drop in the violence.

NO way! but were all of these home grown incidents=?

Dead terrorists & islamothugs. A good thing.

Things have been a little better, but not by much. There was a terror attack yesterday where the jihadis were busy trying to blow up a rail link. They succeeded in shutting down all rail service in the south of the country.

Meanwhile, the jihad has been real busy today with attacks in Algeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Did Obama also oppose this surge?

7 laZardo  Tue, Aug 19, 2008 8:36:17am

Meanwhile, over here in "the P.I.," the military's been wrestling with the MILFs (don't laugh...okay, maybe you can) while at the same time the government debates on whether to expand the Autonomous Muslim regions.

Thing is, the MILFs (and original pre-splinter group MNLFs) want in on that action, and this latest action's gotten everyone in a whirlwind trying to figure out WTF to do next.

8 Honorary Yooper  Tue, Aug 19, 2008 8:37:11am

But, according to Senator Obama, surges don't work. No way, no how.

The incidents might have decreased at a faster rate on their own if the surge hadn't taken place. We will just never know.

Not if it's done by America. Thailand, maybe, depending on if America's "assisting" them or not.

Note the mandatory negative spin at the end of the article. All good news in the WoT gets this treatment. Yeah, things are good now, but wait! The Jihadis could stage a comeback.

This is in the catagory of "No, shit, Sherlock". Whether the Jihadis can come back after such dramatic losses is also open to question. It is all in how you want to spin it.

Which depends on which side you are on.

John Edwards: "Yes, and, hopefully, the next president will understand that what we've been doing is not working. And I actually, myself, believe that this idea of surging troops, escalating the war, what Thailand Sen. Well, I guess Thailand thinks their restive Islamo-fascists are dead wrong. Literally.

70 Land Shark  Tue, Aug 19, 2008 11:10:20am

The results in Thailand underscore again how the only way to deal with Islamic terrorism is force. Any attempts to negotiate and accommodate them only lead to more demands and attacks. They interpret them as signs of weakness, period.

The left continues to be our Achilles heel in the fight against Islamic supremacists. They continue to demand negotiations and concessions, and they constantly try to undermine our will to fight. They blame us for everything while they ignore Islam's murderous hatred of anything non-Muslim. Truly those people are nuts.

71 Daryl Herbert  Tue, Aug 19, 2008 1:01:44pm

Let's all take a moment to remember former PM Thaksin, who was deposed by the foot-king of Thailand for being too tough on the Muslims.

The foot-molesting King of Thailand raped his own country's democracy, and all he ended up doing was delaying the proper response to Muslim terrorism. Good work footy!

Also: good work banning YouTube. That was real clever. We wouldn't want anyone to see you with a big foot mark on your forehead. Good idea to crush free speech at the same time as you crush democracy.

So when does Thaksin get to be PM again?
