RoP Kills 23 in Pakistan

Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 8:53:42 am PDT

A suicide bomber blew himself up in a hospital in northwest Pakistan, killing at least 23 people.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AFP) — A suicide bomber killed 23 people at a hospital in northwest Pakistan Tuesday, highlighting the militant challenge facing the government after the resignation of Pervez Musharraf.

In other violence in the wake of the US-backed president’s decision to bow out on Monday, five soldiers and 13 Taliban militants were killed in a tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

The suicide attack happened as Shiite Muslims gathered to protest over the death of a man in a suspected sectarian attack in the troubled town of Dera Ismail Khan, said North West Frontier Province police chief Malik Naveed Khan.

“There are 23 confirmed dead and up to 20 wounded. We have found the legs of the suspected suicide bomber,” Khan told private Geo television, adding that tensions were high in the area after the blast.

Busy morning for the jihad. What exactly were the jihadis hoping to accomplish by bombing a hospital? Oh yes, further inflame sectarian rivalries between jihadis and those who aren't nearly as Islamic (or are Shi'a rather than Sunni).

What does the latest poll measuring Muslim support of suicide bombings say now?

76 realwest  Tue, Aug 19, 2008 9:22:26am

re: #43 Thanos That's the major problem facing jihadists - Al-Q, the Taliban and the like. You simply cannot win a guerrilla war without having a majority of the population on your side. In Iraq, the Iraqi's got so tired of seeing the "freedom fighters" blowing up and otherwise killing their fellow Muslims (of all branches and types) that they started pointing out to the US and Coalition forces where the bad guys were - result, Al-Q lost so many people, and leaders, that they have pretty much left Iraq altogether now.
Musharraf wasn't a great leader by any stretch of the imagination, but his basic problem - an unwillingness to killing vast numbers of other Muslims, was part of the problem that led him to be ineffective in the Frontier provinces.
Once he moved against the Red Mosque, he was a goner in Paki - but so too, ultimately, will be the jihadists. Because they will wind up killing too many of their fellow Muslims.

Didja tell Coke WHY you did that? I mean if enough folks DO BITCH AND MOAN about Coke's P.C. attitudes, those attitudes will change as soon as their bottom line changes.

No, the reason I kicked them out had nothing to do with this issue...I didn't know about it at the time. As a small business owner Coke tried to mussel me on pricing. They were going to increase my price per box by $10 and told I couldn't buy from my suppliers anymore...just Coke USA. They gave me three choices.
1. Buy from Coke USA @ $10 more per case and I get to use all of the equipment provided by Coke.
2. Buy from my regular supplier at a better rate, but Coke USA would pull my equipment and I would have to buy new equipment.
3. Buy from Pepsi.

I told them to get the fu*k out of my restaurant and started using Pepsi the next week.

True story...Coke was playing the Russian game...buy from me or else.

Coke still comes in trying to get back the business...I'll have a new reason to say HELL NO next time.

Sorry for the delay...but I got tied up for a while.

I go with the calendar theory. These are Sunni attacks. I'm guessing the rhyme or reason is in religious material presented to the Sunni by the local Imam. Dausi Arabia or Egypt is likely the source of some religious directive.

Musharrif leaving may have an unintended positive side effect: The US will no longer have to play nice nice with the "autonomous tribal regions" such as those bastions of innovation and progress, North and South Waziristan. It's time to get serious with the primitive cave dwellers of the region once and for all.

Let's take off the gloves and end their 7th century bullshit for good.

Oops, except for one minor detail...uh, um, um, um, er, uh, uh, er, um, um, er, uh, uh, um, um, um will probably be in the White House.

Hey, it's 0bambi who wants to invade Pakistan immediately.

But I say again, let's follow the Bush family practice of trying to project good thoughts onto situations, and say that Musharrif leaving is after all an opportunity that might prove beneficial for Pakistan and the area and the US all. Could happen.

Canada donates equipment, training

Boring headline right? Now read the story...

OTTAWA - The Canadian government has shipped chemical and biological defence equipment to the Philippines and will soon send personnel to that nation to train special forces and other units in its use.

Canadian officials donated the 300 protective suits to senior military representatives in Manila several weeks ago and an agreement signed by the two countries notes that Canadian personnel will train Filipino troops in the use of the chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence equipment.

The equipment will be used both to respond to a chemical, biological or nuclear attack as well as civilian emergencies such as a chemical spill or gas explosion, according to Filipino government officials.

Make one wonder what is going on, doesn't it?

Porte-cocheres are a kind of heavily swagged drapery. It seemed appropriate given that Kosher Wine Guy might have some kosher port.

Porte-cocheres are car ports. Portiers are curtains for doorways.

Scarlett actually made her dress from portiers rather than curtains. Great balls of fire! They're my portiers now!

I may be wrong (I'm getting used to being so) but I'm almost certain-sure that the porte-cochere is the covered driveway area under which the 'faithful ol' retainer' drives the carriage to let Massa and Missie out so's 'de don' has to git wet goin' into de house.

Forty years for me...I left the corporate world and politics three years ago...it was time to do something on my own. It's in Corpus Christi, TX.

Best burgers you'll find...fresh and hot off the grill...no pre-made crap...100% beef w/ sweet potato fries, freedom fries ( we don't serve anything french ) and homemade onion rings. Grilled chicken sandwiches and salads.
The best is a Grilled Tilapia meal or sandwich around. I grill the Tilapia in olive oil, seasoned with a spicy salt free spice and when finished we squeeze lime juice on it...served with my homemade Cilantro/Jalapeno Mayo with minced garlic.

We've take Best of the Best burgers three years in a row.

Thanks for asking...I got carried away...lol

What did you do?

Whew, now with Obama-unfriendly national security crises dominating the globe, and Obama drooping in the polls, the AP and other news services appear to be ramping it up with the economy gloom and doom lead media reports.

On my NY/NJ station there were three economy bulletins on top of the news just now (instead of the usual one); the latest general economy numbers, housing stats, and one blurb on 'soaring food prices' causing a dangerous epidemic of obesity across several states.

It's the kind of things they're reduced to eating.

i.e. Chips, pizza, bread, lots of fattening things instead of 'nutritious' things.

I agree about pricey veggies and steak, but so many processed carbs, with the addictive (i.e., unnatural) amounts of fat, sugar and salt are not only usually more $$$ per serving than oatmeal, bagged apples and sale meats (many of the food-addicted eat chips by the bag instead of the serving anyway), they're more fattening too.

People always blame the obesity of the poor on 'potatoes and bread' but few people eat whole loaves of plain bread or twenty unadorned baked potatoes - it's the more costly add-ons that add-on weight.

Full service can be tough, I spent ten years in fine dining. I had two mgrs that worked for me...one started drinking first thing in the morning and the other at age 32 blew up his heart because of achahole...I'm thankful I never went there.
I spent thirteen of the last eighteen years the Director of Operations for a company running their restaurants in south TX...then five years after that as a VP for a large QSR chain based in TX. I hated the politics and back stabbing and they decided it was time for me to leave. They fired my boss first because he was Jewish...a good baptist company, we were and still are very close. I knew I didn't want any part of that kind if company. I lost my job while I was on my first day of vacation with my family in Hawaii, two days after my boss lost his job. In all twelve of lost our jobs for one reason or another. Best thing is the company has had all kinds of problems since everyone was let go...lol.
At that point I told my wife that I could find another high paying job somewhere, but at my level there would continue to be shake-ups every two to three years.
I decided screw that...and went out on my own. I don't make the money I use to, but the fringe benefits far surpass what I lost. I go to work in shorts and tennis shoes, do what i want with the menu, spend a lot more time with my family and I can look myself in the mirror each morning...LOL

That's a better description. The cars aren't supposed to stay there long-term, and you can drive through without backing up.

But closer to a carport than drapes. ;-)

I mean that the news stories driven by the MSM changed rapidly to tilt content analysis (i.e., when the main news topic is national security the Repubs tend to gain in the polls, and when the primary story in headlines is the economy (especially if it's tanking) the Dems usually gain in the polls (percentage points, that is....not weight ;-) )
