The History Channel Has 'Sex'

Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 8:56:14 pm PDT

Coming up at 10 pm Pacific on The History Channel, the next episode in their very well-done series on the science of evolution: Evolve - Sex.

In the history of life on earth, sex may be the ultimate survival skill, because the bottom line is: reproduce or die. This episode looks at sex in its many forms, from sharks—among the first vertebrates to have intercourse—to dinosaurs that had to figure out how to join their giant bodies together to mate; from the stick insect (that mates nonstop for 10 straight weeks) to macaques monkeys (about once an hour)... and finally to humans. This driving force of life comes in many forms. How will sex evolve in the future? Are we evolving beyond sex? In fact, is a time coming when we will be able to seize control of our own evolution... not via sex at all, but through genetic engineering?

No, that kind of hunting is a pain in the ass, even if you find a likely subject, it gets even more complicated. With deer hunting, if its legal, you shoot! You don't have to spend money on it, and you don't have to be nice to it, and you aren't required to make a commitment.

I've often thought that the only way we are only going get over the racial tensions in when we a larger population of "multi-racial" people.

It's amazing how predjudice abates when grandparents and family members start seeing "their own eyes" staring back at them from a child that doesn't look look exactly like they do.

I didn't see where the article mentions mixed-race children --many of whom consider themselves and are "counted" demographically as the non-white. It's late, I could have missed that in the article.

Agreed.

And when I visited for a couple months in the late '80s, Hawaii was a wonderful example PRIDE in place of racial prejudice: King Kamehameha Day (something like that) was celebrated throughout the islands, and high-schools would have their King Kam Day princes and princesses, kings & queens introduced to all, and the ones I witnessed were SPARKLING!

"Hi, I'm Shelley LaFuenza, of Swedish-Irish-African-Portuguese roots, and I'm proud to be Hawaiian!" *raucous, supportive cheering

"Hello, I'm Yee-leung Smith, of Spanish-Chinese-British roots, and I am also PROUD to be American!" *raucous, supportive cheering

And it continued for 45 minutes, with kids proudly sharing multi-rooted ancestry black, white, yellow, red, purple and everything but GREY! :D

Oh, dear.

We've got it mapped out: first, I get my .45 carbine, then he gets a Kimber of his very own (so he can stop borrowing mine). We haven't figured the next set of purchases after that.

But everything's interspersed with household purchases - like a reverse osmosis water system, and battery-storage solar, etc.

Jewelry is pretty, but you can't shoot with it, drink it, or eat it.

A man is dining in a fancy restaurant and there is a gorgeous
redhead sitting at the next table. He has been checking her out since he
sat down, but lacks the nerve to talk with her.

Suddenly she sneezes, and her glass eye comes flying out of its
socket toward the man. He reflexively reaches out, grabs it out of the
air, and hands it back.

'Oh my, I am so sorry,' the woman says as she pops her eye back
in place.

'Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you,' she says.

They enjoy a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they go
to the theatre followed by drinks. They talk, they laugh, she shares her
deepest dreams and he shares his. She listens.

After paying for everything, she asks him if he would like to
come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast. They had a
wonderful, wonderful time.

The next morning, she cooks a gourmet meal with all the
trimmings. The guy is amazed. Everything had been SO incredible!
'You know,' he said, 'you are the perfect woman. Are you this
nice to every guy you meet?'

'No,' she replies. .

Wait for it. .

It's coming. .

The suspense is killing you, isn't it?

She says:

'You just happened to catch my eye.'

Russia weighs increasing military aid to Arab world

Syrian President Bashar Assad is scheduled to leave for Russia on Thursday for a two-day visit that has been described by analysts as important at a time when Moscow may be considering closer ties with the Arab world.

Syrian media have described Assad's visit to Moscow as "a working visit" to discuss closer ties in a variety of unspecified areas.

A number of reports in recent months have mentioned large arms deals between Russia and Syria, including advanced anti-aircraft missile systems. Russian and Syrian analysts have said that Israel's military assistance to Georgia has paved the way for a particularly successful visit for the Syrian president, whose country has taken a clear stance on the side of Moscow in the recent conflict in the Caucasus.

He is the stuff shirt program manager. He manages a team of consultants that service Kaiser. Kaiser through him a project in Jan. 2008 that required work on some legacy Visual FoxPro systems, which is one of my expertises.

Well, Kiaser doesn't even know that his firm is not working on this project. All correspondence comes from me, he reformats the emails and questions to look like they are from his team, and he passes it on to Kaiser.

They have spent at least twice the amount of money as they would have had to if I was just on the team, and I could deal with the Kaiser directly.

So, I'm always warning him that Kaiser can't get here from there, but a lot of communication gets muddled this way.

So, fires all the time, and payments showing up in my Paypal account.

But I don't like it this way. I'm too loyal to a project to just sit back and let them make mistake after mistake, and then pay out the nose for their mistakes.

But, what will be will be.

I wonder about where we are.

If Greece had been stronger, would we be ahead in terms of cultural evolution? Greece was never really strong. It was always city-states. It founded colonies in Sicily and other places. It had a huge influence on Rome. It only enjoyed real empire when a Macedonian, Alexander, extended Hellenistic culture far beyond Greece. But Athens, what we consider the epitome of Greek sophistication, did not accept Alexander, a Macedonian not really considered authentically Greek. And with Alexander's death, the Greek/Macedonian Empire was split apart, with the most successful possibly being the Ptolemaic that fell when Cleopatra committed suicide.

Then with the Romans, the West fell slowly over a period of hundreds of years, but historically it is pinned at 476 AD, despite that for decades before that the Western Roman Empire had ceased to be and was a puppet of invading Goths, some more appreciative of Rome than the Romans themselves. The Eastern Roman Empire (the "Byzantine Empire"), a completely Christian nation that gave rise to to the various Orthodox Churches, persisted until 1453 and fell to the Turks. It protected the rest of Europe from Muslim conquest on the eastern flank up to that point.

Would we be different or farther along culturally if Greece or Rome (intact or the West or the East) had persisted?

I don't know. Much happened in tumultuous Europe after that. The Renaissance (perhaps helped by Byzantines fleeing the Turks), the enlightenment and then the rise of modern science and technology.

Would science and technology and some cultural evolution occurred had these great civilizations not fallen? Yes, perhaps, or maybe what we consider the modern resulted because they fell and we wished to retrieve their glory.

At any rate, it is absurd that the level of discourse on a range of issues is so simplistic and stupid. Of course, we evolved. Of course, sex evolved from animals going at it to a huge part of our psyche. Without sex we wouldn't be here. We are friggin' animals - advanced animals, perhaps evolved because God willed it - but we are animals. With our bigger brains, we made sex into more than just going at it into a huge cultural affair. Duh!

This History Channel show would be something a few thousand years ago. Now, it's just so obvious.

In fact, is a time coming when we will be able to seize control of our own evolution... not via sex at all, but through genetic engineering?

Yes, I think so. With our intelligence and compassion, we take an active role in the manipulation of our genetic pool.

Ironically, by advances in medicine which allow life for individuals who might have perished in another age we alter in a negative sense what genes are passed on. It has been argued in places that by such we weaken the species, but I think more importantly that it speaks to our goodness and altruism as people. And in time we will learn to clean these messes as well, allowing for individuals with genetic diseases to have offspring which inherit all the good bits that a billion years of slugging it out for survival built into their parents, and avoid the malady which the parent suffered against.

The important point here I think is that even this is a natural process. We are ourselves a part of nature, and with the intelligence which our species developed comes new opportunity and responsibility.

If God had intended birds to build airplanes, he would have given them bigger brains.

55 is the minimum age to get in here.

There are a lot of senior seniors and over 200 clubs for activities.

A significant number of younger gals in a 9400 housing unit gated community.

Are you a leasing agent for these folks? I don't want to move anywhere near SanFran, or in Ca. in general, I don't care if they supplied a woman in every unit... wait... hmmmm.... ok, what kind of deal can you come up with.

The author of this email is Dr. Emanuel Tanay, a well-known and well respected psychiatrist.
A German's View on Islam

A man, whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II, owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism. "Very few people were true Nazis," he said, "but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories."
We are told again and again by "experts" and "talking heads" that Islam is the religion of peace, and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the spectra of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam.
The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honor- kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers.
The hard quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the "silent majority," is cowed and extraneous.
Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant.
China's huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.
The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet.
And, who can forget Rwanda , which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were "peace loving"?
History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our posers of reason we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points: Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence. Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don't speak up, because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.
Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late.
As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts, the fanatics who threaten our way of life.
Lastly, anyone who doubts that the issue is serious and just deletes this email without sending it on, is contributing to the passiveness that allows the problems to expand. So, extend yourself a bit and send this on and on and on! Let us hope that thousands, world wide, read this and think about it, and send it on - before it's too late.

Some Democrats Urge Delay in Building a U.S. Missile System in Eastern Europe

By ERIC LIPTON
Published: August 19, 2008
WASHINGTON — As the Bush administration speeds ahead with plans to construct a missile defense system in Eastern Europe, some Democrats in Congress want to put on the brakes, saying it has not been adequately tested.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was scheduled to be in Warsaw on Wednesday to sign an agreement on the missiles with Poland, which agreed to the basing of 10 interceptors last week, after the Russian attacks on Georgia. Justified as a defense against a missile attack on Europe by a rogue nation like Iran, the installation has provoked outrage from Russia.

Even before the agreement was reached, the Bush administration had proposed spending $712 million in the coming fiscal year to start digging silos in Poland; installing a related radar system in the Czech Republic, another former Soviet satellite that is now a NATO member; and buying initial parts for the first interceptor missiles.

But Democrats are now questioning all that spending as premature.

“Go ahead and move on with research and development,” said Representative Ellen O. Tauscher, Democrat of California, who is chairwoman of the House subcommittee that oversees the missile defense program. “But as far as putting holes in the ground in Poland, we are saying no.”

Yes, I think so. With our intelligence and compassion, we take an active role in the manipulation of our genetic pool.

I think it's possible that reproduction will might move in this direction, however- people enjoy sex and will continue to partake of it. Unless, that is, it evolves into something less pleasurable.

Charles, this is an amusing post:

If you can take the statement

sharks—among the first vertebrates to have intercourse

without a grain of salt, you seem very innocently trusting (of untrustworthy folks) to me.

Of course, I can almost hear you telling us that this is a "proven" truth.

Proven? Hardly.

From the creationist viewpoint, different species began having intercourse at virtually the same time, as they were all created within the same week.

But, of course, we "anti-science" folks are easily mislead.

I dunno....is "survival" and "fear of death" really the bottom-line reasons why anyone has sex?

"It feels good" seems to trump all.

If you indeed believe that all the species of the earth were created independently and as is within the span of a week some 6000 years ago, you indeed have been quite massively misled, since those particular myths have been empirically disproven via radimetric dating and artifactual retroviral DNA evidence, although I cannot vouch for how easily that misleading was effectuated.

Those who don't pass on their genes have no representation in the future. Sex feels good *because* of its biological necessity. We don't have to understand the underlying reason that we are bred like it for it to be effective at its true purpose.

Why do men enjoy breasts? It seems reasonable that the underlying reason is that they are useful for securing the health of our nursing offspring. Biology is clever though. All we have to know is "Booby Booby Booby Booby Booby".

253 spaceman  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 1:09:15pm

I think that we agree Sharmuta. My "yes" was in response to "is a time coming when we will be able to seize control of our own evolution... through genetic engineering", not to the "evolving beyond sex" statement.

255 Basho  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 1:44:41pm

"Are we evolving beyond sex? In fact, is a time coming when we will be able to seize control of our own evolution... not via sex at all, but through genetic engineering?"

Seems to be some confusion around. The point of that line was not that sex would be eliminated among humans, it's that reproduction will no longer be a factor in our evolution. Genetic engineering may do in one generation what would probably have taken hundreds of generation to do before.

Fish are the earliest vertebrates, sharks have intercourse. What is wrong with that statement?

The creation example you state suffers a problems. Not only do many species have to start having intercourse at the same time, but many species had to reproduce without intercourse at the same time as well. Why all the different methods? Why do some sea animals lay their eggs on the sea floor while the male then fertilizes them without intercourse? Evolution offers a wonderful solution to the diversity of life.

But is that really evolution? Wouldn't we be removing the random genetic mutation in favor of specified genetic manipulation? Might this actually prohibit the evolution of the human species, since we have no idea what sort of genetic mutation might occur and actually be of benefit for natural selection?

257 Basho  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 2:34:02pm

re: #256 Sharmuta

Well, it would be evolution. Evolution means change. It just won't be through natural selection. Same as the evolution of domesticated animals had nothing to do with natural selection but with selective breeding.

Perhaps a better term would be intelligent design, but I think that's been taken. Hah!
