McCain Takes 5-Point Lead in Zogby Poll

Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 8:28:27 am PDT

Big trouble for the little messiah: Poll shows McCain in 5-point lead over Obama.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama’s solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.

Andrew Sullivan hits bottom, digs,

In all the discussion of John McCain's recently recovered memory of a religious epiphany in Vietnam, one thing has been missing. The torture that was deployed against McCain emerges in all the various accounts. It involved sleep deprivation, the withholding of medical treatment, stress positions, long-time standing, and beating. Sound familiar?

According to the Bush administration's definition of torture, McCain was therefore not tortured.

Points to note:
1) This is Zogby, which has been unreliable for some time now;
2) This may be part of massaging the numbers so as to make Obama look like he gets a bigger bounce from the convention than otherwise.

I'm already expecting a dead cat bounce from the Convention, but Obama really has to be concerned that things are as close as they are given that this should by all rights be a lock for the Democrats given the way the economy is, energy prices, and the general outlook on war. Yet, it would seem that the Left's lockbox on energy has turned the public against the Democrats. If you don't drill, you keep prices high, and people are recognizing the Democrats as being in favor of high prices. That's going to have some effect.

Oh, and Obama's flip-flopping ways, associations with terrorists, and other assorted unforced errors is having a cumulative effect. And not in a good way.

That should be a good trick, since so far, they haven't been able to swing a tack hammer. McCain is a war hero, Obama is a puff of bean gas.

Obama is also a beta male, and mocking and ridiculing a genuinely patriotic war hero (unlike Kerry who made himself easy to mock on this point)and respected senator is going to make Obama look obnoxious because he won't be humorous about it - he'll be as heavy as lead.

This creep cannot distinguish between panties on the head of a jihadi and beating a man with clubs, knocking his teeth out and suspending him until his shoulders dislocate. All the same to Sully.

I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it, but I really don't think we even beat Jihadists.

That is a flat out lie. Torture was already precluded by another statute.

I only hope McCain doesn't take it as a sign he needs to put Lieberman on his ticket.

He's been steamrolling to the front, had a lot of momentum, but putting will kill his support. Some conservatives may still go out and vote for McCain, but it'll be a party killer. The President is usually the head of the party and the conservatives are close enough to tell the limp republicans to go sod themselves and quit the party. The republicans are the new dems and as long as the republicans continue to drift away from my principles, they will continue to lose my support.

I was listening to Hannity yesterday for a few minutes and he had someone on who was talking about how McCain winning would be a disaster for the GOP and the nation, and that we need Obama to win in order to bring about the second coming of a Reagan revolution. He was some kind of GOPer from the sound of it and kept citing to history as being his guide. He noted that we needed Carter's victory in 1976 to usher in the 1980 Reagan win.

He was noting that McCain was socialism-lite compared to Obama's straight up socialism. McCain's economics may be misguided (especially his global warming outlook), but McCain would do far less damage than anything that Obama could impose with the House and Senate in Democrat hands. The damage done by Obama would be incalculable and as long lasting as anything done during the Carter days.

We're still living with Carter's mess, and will do so for the foreseeable future. Obama would bring back Carter's policies, and double down on the messes already created - Iran being the most visible, followed closely (and related to) the energy policy.

Carter's failure to stand up to the Russians emboldened them back then, and Obama would do backflips to appease the Russians. You already see that the media is trying to portray Russia as the victim in Georgia - that it was the Georgians who sought out war in South Ossetia.

Obama's first instinct is to appease and make America weaker by giving in to aggression. That's a presidency we cannot afford.

We're still dealing with Carter's mess, and yet this guy thought that if McCain won, it would then result in a one-term run for McCain followed by an Obama or Clinton win in 2012. McCain could indeed be a 1-termer, but the nation doesn't need a leftist as President, especially when Democrats hold on the House and Senate looks like it may cement itself going forward.

Jennifer Rubin notes some progress McCain is making in Iowa, Minnesota and NY, though she doesn't think he's likely to win any of them, such progress is good as it forces Obama to play defense in places where he thought he'd have it easy. re: #51 DistantThunder

Careful, folks, here in NJ in his senate race, Torricelli was diving in the polls due to corruption charges, Dems forced him to resign, so the NJ supreme court ruled that the people have a right to a choice, and allowed a replacement (Lautenberg) AFTER the official deadline for changes had passed.

The Democrats changed the rules mid-game - and we're stuck with senile (D)Lautenberg who is like 81 years old.

The Dems always rewrite the rules when it's to their advantage. That's what the Florida flap was about eight years ago: Whether Gore could demand yet another recount past the time the Florida constitution declared was the final deadline for recounts. That's why they whine about the Electoral College when they win the popular vote but lose in the College. (You will notice, however, they're all for the College when they win the Electoral vote.)

Now this is interesting:

Poland & the Missile Deal

The real problem with NATO’s eastern frontier was highlighted by Poland’s demand it be provided with Patriot anti-aircraft missiles to as a precondition to hosting anti-ballistic missile basing on its soil. The Poles needed tactical reassurance to participate in the strategic equation...

...The irony of the deal is that it was held up by Poland’s desire to have US patriot missile batteries installed on Polish soil. … Whereas the US missile silo is designed to intercept long range missiles from Iran or North Korea however, the US patriot batteries are very clearly a measure against what Warsaw considers its own “rogue state” - Russia.

On the polls, again.
Based on noticing bumper stickers (I haven't seen any house signs yet), I've seen more McCain stickers than Obama recently.
I live and work in Massachusetts, but somewhat out of the uber-liberal Boston/Cambridge commune, and near the NH border, so there is some bias from NH vehicles. This does constitute bias in my "poll".
But I'd still expect to see a fair number of Obama bumper stickers, and I haven't.

I'm not seeing any Obama stickers or signs here in Vermont or in Western NH either.

Obama's recent threat that McCain "doesn't know who he's dealing with" is something a guy says when he's trying to psych himself up for a bigger fight than he thought he was in for.

And we all know that this kind of bluster indicates that Obama, deep down, doesn't have the stuff. I like theory that Obama and his team were totally unprepared for his success in the primaries. They've been winging a campaign ever since, pinning Obama to programmed speeches, throwing anything damaging under the bus, and spending money like water on advisors and image. They are making it up as they go, and they are scared.

Not as scared as the rest of us, though. An Obama administration, lacking any serious content at the center -- something Obama practically admitted at Saddleback -- would be a domestic and geopolitical disaster.

The polished aluminum was for weight considerations. Weigh less, go faster. The colorful markings were originally for intimidation in WW1, but turned out to be near-necessary in the jet age for "friend or foe" identification until that was put into the electronics.

That McCain came out strong just as Obama displayed his inability to field direct questions about policy laid to rest any doubts. He and some of his people have even referred to him as "president obama" as if he currently is the president. A Fox announcer blasted one of them a few weeks back for that.

Obama's never been in a real fight with a real man. He recently said, "Why are we even having to run commercials?"

They can't run their primary process, their policies have made a basket case out of michigan, the hike in minimum wage destroyed youth jobs last summer, oil prices doubled since Pelosi took the house and promised to lower them, etc., etc., etc.

......but trust that they would be much better job in managing the country.

And those oil prices doubling in the cold parts of the country are a BIG deal. We may actually have to choose between heat and the mortgage. And to boot, the town revalued everything so the taxes literally doubled plus some. I'm worried, I don't mind telling you.

Funny, it wasn't for the MSM when Obama was leading.

I don't care about the MSM. The question still is - despite the positive indications - are these fluctuations indicative of a trend, or is it just so much noise that's just as likely to swing back a few times over the next 2 1/2 months. I really don't think we have enough information to answer that question defintively.

The only thing I think we can conclude that the "celebrity" meme was an excellent tactic.

Nothing to do with Obama being unable to lead and continuing to be obsessed with Obama to the exclusion of all else and nothing to do with the public making it's own judgements based on Obama's campaign and his reaction to the Georgian crisis.

When was this poll taken? Before or after the Rick Warren event?

"On the polls, again.
But I'd still expect to see a fair number of Obama bumper stickers, and I haven't."

Based on my daily travels in Lancaster and York County PA (both lean more Rep than Dem), the yard signs and bumper stickers for Obama outnumber the McCain signs and stickers 20-1. However, I am starting to see more and more McCain bumper stickers. I think the Republican party in Lancaster Co finally woke up and realized that a conservative candidate was not in the cards this year and they finally seem to be hitting the streets. I live in Lancaster City (full of moonbats) and the moonbats have their Obama signs/posters proudly displayed in the windows of their expensive townhouses. The Saabs, Volvos, and Prius parked in front of the Episcopal, Unitarian, Lutheran, and Presby churches downtown are covered with Obama and "God Bless the Whole World-No Exceptions" stickers. However, even some of the suburban areas, which are traditionally Rep strongholds, have a lot of O signs in the yards.

Despite all of this lack of McCain signage, my prediction is that McCain will sweep Lancaster Co by a landslide. Those who do not have an Obama sign in their window or front yard are closet McCain voters. Because why would you be an Obama supporter and NOT want to "show off" to your fellow travelers that you are as cool, intellectual, non-racist, and One Wordly as they?

415 jackfetch  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 9:40:06am

Yes, living in urban Portland (OR), we fear to put a McCain sign up. It's rather ridiculous that anyone should feel afraid to use their right to free speech on their own property in this day and age in the U.S. Yet a lawn sign we had for the least horrid mayoral candidate (a Democrat, because they ALL were... we're sooo open-minded here) was vandalized repeatedly during the primary season.
------------------
By the way, these new poll results are priming the pump for a Clinton takeover in Denver. They've already agreed to hold a roll call, the Clintons are all over the event, and now the argument that Obama would win in a virtual steamroller of a campaign has been deflated. Procedurally, it is not too late for Sen. Clinton to be nominated. Especially if the first roll call is indecisive, then the thing is wide open.

In a way, I'd love to see that. For one thing, she'd be a known quantity if she won the White House. A third Clinton term wouldn't have too many surprises, and while they did mangle huge swaths of the federal government with the first wholesale swap and replace ultra-partisan makeovers, we did prove that the country can survive them.

For another, it'd be interesting to see the reaction of the 90+% of the black population who support Obama come Hell or high water, should she "steal" the nomination. (If the left is going to constantly stoke the dying flames of race issues for their own political purposes, it'd be fun to see them have to stand in the flames.)

Nope. $10K+ to change it to anything other than wood or pellets. IF an electrician or heating technician can be found with time to convert the thing. There is not a single suitable place to hook up a wood stove in this house. We could do a pellet for a couple thousand, but there are no pellets to be had for love nor money - already. And we do not have that kind of cash.

I winterized the dickens out of it last year and we kept the heat on 62, 55 at night. Even though oil was up quite some bit, we did manage to hold the line. But with the cost of oil doubled?

That's OK, I've got more.
My block has about 8 cars with McCain bumperstickers. 3 houses have McCain window signs.
Did I mention I live in San Francisco?

* * *
McCain's mother grew up in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CAlifornia, where McCain probably spent many hours as a young man--California was a home away from home for their military family.

McCain's grandfather lived on Coronado Island, off San Diego, and died the day he arrived straight from witnessing Japan's surrender on that carrier.

McCain's got plenty of California relatives and California connections he could exploit.

"On the polls, again.
But I'd still expect to see a fair number of Obama bumper stickers, and I haven't."

Interesting! I noticed the same when we went up to Woodstock (NY) for the weekend - a nest of liberals and far-leftloons. I was bracing myself for a kaleidoscope of Obama shirts, buttons, signs and stickers - but I saw not a ONE. This was odd to say the least.

My in-laws were getting together at a family home; most are Jewish academic/university liberals, and many were Obamites. But my MIL & FIL, lifelong Dems, will NOT vote for Obama - they despise him, and they may just not vote at all.

However, they BOTH would vote for Mac, if Leiberman is on the ticket... Wondering how common this demographic dynamic is.

re: #426 BeerDrinking_VictoryMonkey

Not just any F-16s, but the Israeli's custom F-16I Sufa. Look at this thing - It's like the Barry Bonds of fighter jets!

From the F-16 Air Forces Website

The first foreign customer, beyond the four European NATO originators, of the F-16 program was Iran. As a part of the Shah's plan to modernize the Imperial Iranian Air Force, Iran signed a letter of intent on October 27th, 1976 for 160 F-16 aircraft, with the possibility of a follow-on order for 140 more. However, the Iranian revolution of 1979 which resulted in the overthrow of the Shah and the rise of the Islamic fundamentalist regime which currently rules the country, caused the order to be cancelled.

Unfortunately, one immediate effect of the cancellation of the Iranian order was that the individual unit cost of the F-16 was sharply driven upward. However, many of the F-16s intended for Iran were eventually sold to Israel.

That last blurb is ironic.

One thing I find interesting is that even with the MSM in the tank pulling full time for Obama, McCain has never been far behind. And let's not forget those polls are "weighed" to favor Democrats, so the Obamination faces a lot more opposition than people realize.

Once the conventions are over and the Presidential campaign shifts into high gear, it may become increasingly difficult for the MSM to cover up Obama's many liabilities. People will start to pay closer attention to what he's really all about, and that's no good for this unqualified empty suit the Democrats are trying to elect.

It's going to take all conservatives voting for McCain to beat Obama, though, so I hope McCain wises up and chooses a Pro-Life candidate. While I like Joe Lieberman and would vote for McCain anyway if he chooses him for Veep, it would be disastrous because of the GOP's base strong anti-abortion stand. Just say no to Joe, John.

472 Aylios  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 9:59:24am

Haha, I just came across this choice quote in this article which was linked to earlier: [Link: www.americanthinker.com...]

We follow Obama down to Springfield, where as a state legislator, he voted "present" over 120 times. What this means, as far as I've been able to discover, is that he voted "present" nearly as much as he voted "yes" or "no".

Now, statehouses work very simply: a member approaches his colleagues and asks them them to vote for his bill. Some comply, some do not. Some ask, "Is it a good bill?" and some don't. Either way, they customarily, except in unusual circumstances, vote "yes' or "no". All except for Barack Obama. And how did get away with it? How did mollify his colleagues? How did he square himself with the party bosses? Echo answereth not.

(A good slogan could be made of this: "You can't vote present in the Oval Office." I hereby commend it to the McCain campaign.)

WASHINGTON (AP) - After months of careful deliberation, presumptive Democrat Party presidential nominee Barack Obama today announced the identity of his vice-presidential running mate - an American Flag. The announcement comes amidst - and possibly in response to - recent attacks by Republican candidate John McCain, who has repeatedly questioned the patriotism of Mr. Obama...Still, not everyone approves of the selection. Bubba Gumperson, self-appointed "Town Bigot" of Hogeye, Arkansas, says that Obama's veep choice won't affect his vote. "Well, I ain't votin' for that colored fella, 'cause he's half white & half black. I sure as HELL ain't voting for the other colored fella - he's half white, half red, and half blue. I went with a wood stove over pellet because of that. I use North Idaho Energy Logs Cheaper than cut wood, energy dense, no fillers or binders. Plus little smoke or ashes.

the poll is clearly a fake in order to galvanize obama's rabid base

Zogby is a wholly owned subsidiary of Clinton Inc. I think this, while it's probably closer to the truth than any other polls, is being put out there now so Herself! can take the nom from bam at the convention.

IOW, I question the timing.

It was the Gallup as just announced on Fox news - and they made quite a thing of McCain being ahead.

I didn't see them - I typed them just as Fox announced them - and then made a big deal out of Obama being behind.

Iran Unveils Prophet Mohammad Painting

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian city of Zanjan has unveiled the largest miniature painting, which portrays the Prophet Mohammad's (PBUH) ascent to heaven.

But the painter wasn't Danish, so it doesn't count.

LARGEST miniature? No wonder people who follow Mo get so confused. Black is white, up is down, big is small.

If John McCain picks an ok running mate, he will be in good shape. Otherwise his lead will vanish quickly as conservatives abandon him. But Obama, what can you say? He is a cipher who speaks profoundly about nothing. I fear for our future if he gets in the White House.

Good.

Since most of these polls tend to favour Dem's, it's very likely that McCain is up 7-10pts. When he adds Romney, add a few more.

I've said it before, I'll say it again:

McCain wins big in November.

I'm really looking forward to finishing this book in the next few days.

547 captainzot  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 3:22:56pm

I have to say, I'm delighted to see this, but I hope this isn't a double secret ploy by Zogby. Thinks like this could alarm the previously celebratory democrat rooters who were sure that their uh... man? ... was carrying the day. Lets hope that their heads don't get dislodged from their common resting place long enough for them to put 2 and 2 together. Of course this may not work either... the new math may have already done it's work on it's supporters :)

A new definition of "post-partisan" politics

549 SalsaNChips  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 6:17:32pm

I gave $25.00 to McCain's campaign and may give another $50.00 in September. That's about all McCain is worth to me (I gave the GWB campaign $170.00 in 2004).

Voting for him. Hope he wins. Obama sucks. McCain kinda sucks too, but you have to choose sides at some point...

re: #6 Shug

Here is a poll statistic FWIW

I contributed $25 today to the McCain campaign.
I have never given 5 cents to a candidate before.

Me neither, and I may yet follow suit. The Dems have been taken over by Socialists, and "You get what you pay for."

551 Optimizer  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 6:59:40pm

This will surprise no one here.

I was at a Dr's office a few hours ago, and they had some MSM network on (don't remember which one, but the guy was filling in for Katie Couric). They showed some poll numbers and ... shocka ... BHO was up by a couple of points. I scarcely had to look at the numbers - we all know in here that if BHO wasn't ahead in the specified poll, they wouldn't air it. I guess they could still find one somewhere that has The One ahead.

On a side note, does anybody know how they do these polls? I mean, do people with only cells phones ever get the call? Or can they get those numbers? Hell - I'm in the phone book, and they probably wouldn't get past my Caller ID. Who are they really polling?

re: #218 BeerDrinking_VictoryMonkey

I've always found it odd that back in the 40s & 50s, before radar when you actually had to see your enemy, fighter planes were flying around in polished aluminium & bright colorful warkings, but today, when most dog-fighting is done beyond visual range, fighter planes are painted in a uniform dull grey.

In the early WWII days, fighter planes were painted mostly with camo, with limited bright markings for identification (basically visible when you got close.)

But paint has higher drag than bare metal. Once the air war was basically won (1944), the allies decided that it was more important to be fast and fuel-efficient than to be stealthy -- you can't hide a thousand bombers anyway, so they may as well be smooth with minimum drag and minimum fuel usage.

The brightest planes were in the WWI days -- the Germans' "flying circus", for example.

Since radar has become more powerful, modern air forces do everything possible to reduce signals. Shape, material, paint color, and paint type are all important. Take a nice stealthy plane and paint it with the wrong type of drab gray paint and it'll show up nice and bright on radar.

Re: #233

I thought there was something odd about that pic... then I looked at the Air Force Thunderbirds poster up on my wall. LOL!

With every dip in Barack's poll numbers, Michelle gets less proud of America.

How long before she goes off again?
