The Bear Digs In

Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 9:50:23 am PDT

The Russian government continues issuing statements about “pulling back” from Georgia, but the Russian military is digging in.

SACHKHERE, Georgia (AP) — Russian forces on Wednesday built a sentry post just 30 miles from the Georgian capital, appearing to dig in to positions deep inside Georgia despite pledges to pull back to areas mandated by a cease-fire signed by both countries.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says his troops will complete their pullback by Friday, but few signs of movement have been seen other than the departure of a small contingent that have held the strategically key city of Gori. ...

Russian soldiers were setting up camp Wednesday in at least three positions in west-central Georgia. Further east, soldiers were building a sentry post of timber on a hill outside Igoeti, 30 miles from Tbilisi and the closest point to the capital where Russian troops have maintained a significant presence.

And Europe has blocked even a strongly worded letter from NATO.
The Europeans are keeping warm on the fire that is Georgia.
Someone should do an editorial cartoon that shows Europeans warming themselves over a burning Georgia.

Since Russia supposedly agreed to "cease fire" and to "withdraw", we should announce that if they do not live up to agreements, we cannot trust them on anything, and all agreements with them, including all treaties, are null and void.

15 bulwrk  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 9:55:40am

Who is in charge of the Russian Military? It's easy to say Putin but does he have any constitutional say in this? I can't imagine him micromanaging this. Whose orders do the Russian generals follow the Presidents or the prime ministers?

Even if they do intend to withdraw, which is by no means certain, they're going to take their sweet time about it to show they're not taking orders from anyone and their utter contempt for the impotency of the West and NATO. It also gives their paramilitary thugs plenty of time to terrorize the locals and cart off the loot. They know perfectly well they have plenty of water carriers and sympathizers in the West who'll repeat and excuse everything they say and do. Some will probably even show up here repeating the " but the Georgians attacked first, they killed civilians" line.

Russian Foriegn Minister Lavrov's pile of dung opinion in the Wall Street Journal today.

He fails to mention why they would KIDNAP 20 Georgian soldiers. Post-ceasefire it cannot be called 'capturing' the enemy.

He fails to mention why Russia would confiscate U.S. military equipment, our Humvees.

He fails to mention why Russian military move forward and setup posts while their President says they are withdrawing. In fact he doesn't even use the word withdraw(al) in the entire piece.

He does have this fine quote "Just admit that a democratically elected leader can lie."

Well we can certainly admit that an un-democratically elected leader can lie. And his foriegn minister.

Who signs the paychecks? Or... who is in charge of the political apparatus?

When Stalin was given the job of General Secretary of the Communist Party it was believed that the position was a dead end job of no significance. Being communists, the leadership of the party did not understand the inherent importance of the person whose job is to hire and pay people. An error that would never have occurred in a capitalist social and political structure. They did not understand that by giving Stalin "the keys to the office" they had basically given him control of everything.

I wonder how this affects the status of the Georgians deployed in Iraq. My brother worked with them and said they were really motivated and were quite well versed on the evils of [bigoted word]ism and Communism. Its funny how the Russians havent deployed any troops in Afghanistan (you'd think they'd like a little payback) they must have learned a lesson. Maybe a US backed and NATO supported Georgian opposition movement could teach the Russians/neo-Soviets that same lesson.

An article in the BBC a few days ago said that Russia was losing the PR war -- and today we have 2 articles, one from Russia's foreign minister in the WSJ and another by Gorbachev in the New York Times. Soviet-style propaganda with a 21st century twist -- blaming the U.S. for complicity in a genocide by Georgia and analogizing to Kosovo. Tried and true KGB tactics, guaranteed to convince moonbats and leftists the world over.

Speaking of old ladies. When I was in my twenties, I was living in Jerusalem one summer and while walking thru the city I happen to step off a curb while waiting to cross. A little old Jewish grandma yanked me back, slapped my hand, and admonished me to stay on the sidewalk until it was safe. And all I could say was yes maam.

A healthy society is one in which adults take care of and correct children. In a sick society, like urban America, adults are afraid of the "youths" who are allowed to run wild.

The Russian government -- lying?

Such a thing has never happened in the history of mankind.

Such as:

Katyn Forest is a wooded area near Gneizdovo village, a short distance from Smolensk in Russia where, in 1940 on Stalin's orders, the NKVD shot and buried over 4000 Polish service personnel that had been taken prisoner when the Soviet Union invaded Poland in September 1939 in WW2 in support of the Nazis.
[NKVD- Narodny Kommisariat Vnutrennikh Del. If you are Polish NKVD means "Nie wiadomo kiedy wroce do domu. Impossible to tell when I will return home."]

That may be an option to a carrier battle group which will be blocked from entering the Black Sea.

Ukraine is friendly and conveniently located for deployment and intelligence-gathering.

I think it's going to be a very cold winter in Georgia...disrupt the Russian supply lines and steadily degrade their forces through asymmetric warfare...make them pay a steep, and ongoing, price for their aggression.

You know, scratch this. There are so many creative ways we could deal with this situation. If we would only use our imaginations.

For example, we could make a statement like this:

"Russia has said it is pulling back it's forces, but it appears they are digging in instead. We can only assume that communication is very poor and discipline shockingly lax in the Russian armed forces. Perhaps these soldiers are acting entirely on their own, disregarding orders of Prime Minister Medvedev and their superior officers. Perhaps they have decided they prefer Georgia's democracy and want to stay. If so, we're sure the Georgian government would be glad to offer them political asylum.

"However, since at the moment we are uncertain of the motives and intentions of these troops, we are taking steps to ensure that they are unable to intimidate or otherwise interfere with the democratically elected government of Georgia or disrupt the day to day lives of Georgian citizens. NATO forces are now landing in Georgia's harbors and airports to act as protectors and peacekeepers until this matter is resolved."

Good points. I'd like to make two of my own.

1. At the time the actual bombing of Kosovo was going on, the Russians didn't seem that upset. Oh, yeah, they complained some. . but they didn't do anything.

2. The left was thrilled with the bombings. By G-d, those filthy Serbs were getting what was coming to them! I know they're going to try and turn around now, and say they were against Amerikkkan imperialism all the time; they shouldn't be allowed to get away with that.

Actually, three points:

3. If Russia's so worried about the Serbs, and Islamic imperialism, why do they continue to sell weapons to Iran, and support groups like Hamas and Hizbollah?

If the U.S. doesn't help out, Georgia is done for and democracy suffers a defeat - and what the hell will the U.S. do if Russia "roughs up" the Ukraine?

In front of the stove they have a small window that let's you see the fire burning . The pellets are stored in the back of the stove and by a small motor are pulled into the flame box.

Let's Be Completely Honest ... Lie

If you want to convert someone to your position, lie to them.

If you want to support Obama, lie about John McCain. hell, tell the truth about John McCain - but ad don any other thing you can think of that is outrageous.

If you are talking about the election to an NRA member, tell them John McCain hates guns. If you are talking to a religious figure, tell them that John McCain is an atheist (this pains me to say as an atheist, as it infers something wrong with atheism, but we all must sacrifice here!). Lie. Lie with abandon. Lie without regret.
....
This election is of paramount importance, with McCain trying to reignite the cold war, an Iranian War, and more love to corporations like Exxon ... morality is not a luxury we have available to us.

So let's be completely honest.... LIE.

True and I think there's a lot going on militarily that we're not hearing. The prisoner exchange yesterday, the Russians had only a handful of Georgian POWS. It looks like the Georgian main forces escaped getting caught in a bag, and have withdrawn to places they can defend better (southern mountains ? ), the Russian air was their biggest problem from what little evidence I've seen of their destroyed equipment. depends - you have to consider the cost of the stove (if you can get one), the install (if you can find someone to do it) and the pellets themselves (which at least here are pretty hard to lay hands on right now.)

I have some friends that have a couple of apartments. They've been quite worried too and asked me for advice some time ago. I suggested they convert the apartments to electric, reduce the rent $100 a month and have the tenants pay their own. Would have saved them a ton of $$ - but the cost of the conversion was $10,000 per apartment, with a wait time of months to get an electrician to do it.

Your statement would be a lie.

NATO has no intention of helping Georgia.

Perhaps not all of NATO but Georgia was given a roadmap to membership which puts them on the way. This was the same thing they were denied this past spring. This allows NATO members to assist Georgia in building up the infrastructure needed to meet the membership demands. In practical terms, this means military equipment, etc..

I do enjoy seeing UK and US moonbats echoing talking point.

Nick Brown, Labor party deputy chief whip:

"Cameron urges Nato to admit Georgia. Nato is a mutual defence pact. This position will have gone down very well in Tbilisi, but do we really mean to commit ourselves to an all-out war against the Russian Federation if something like this happens again? I don't favour that approach and I don't know anyone who does," Brown wrote.

That's exactly what happened. The "dog that didn't bark" in this adventure was the lack of a pitched battle. The Georgians wisely got away. Now Russia has to deal with coming guerrilla attacks. The Georgians will need to push back the Russian air cover (stingers) and hit their armor (javelins). The Russians will respond with rocket fire on Tbilisi. Oh, and btw all y'all - I've said all I can say about the Russia/Georgia thing. Apparently not enough people think going into shooting down Russian planes, sinking Russian Navy ships and using US airpower to take out Russian supply lines and armor is worth it - well, I guess except for those who recognize that Georgia is a DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC, AND AN ALLY OF THE U.S. IN IRAQ.

If the U.S. doesn't help out, Georgia is done for and democracy suffers a defeat - and what the hell will the U.S. do if Russia "roughs up" the Ukraine?

I'm with you, There are times you stand, stand for what is right, for what you believe, stand with your friends. You put your fear in a box and STAND!

If we don't stand up for Georgia, who will stand up for?
The world is watching. All those little countries are watching, the message of not standing is YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN!

If we don't stand up now, when?
Ukraine?
Poland?
German?
England?
Ourselves?

We are an idea, our national identity is not race, religion, it's and idea. Georgia is embracing our idea! We either stand for or idea or risk losing it all.

We delayed in WWII until it was almost too late.
The stakes of delay are higher now, delay more costly.

re: #75 Son of the Black Dog

The LAW might be a better choice, even if the design is 40+ years old. It's light, simple to operate, and after you fire it you throw away the container/launch tube. It won't do much to a T-80, but it'll go through everything else I've seen the Russians driving. Send the Georgians lots of anti-armor and anti-aircraft.

The Marines in the Nam chose the old WWII/Korea bazooka over the LAW because the bazooka worked.

Not sure if "improvements" to the LAW since then are real, or fall under the same heading as "improvements" to the M-16.

In any case, the countdown has begun on the Georgian "insurgency" with much crippled Russian armor adorning the landscape- just a matter of time until the weapons are in place with a trained cadre to operate them- whether those weapons be NATO LAWs or the elegant and available RPG.

On the coup front, each day brings Hillary closer to her moment of truth.

The question is, is this 1936 and the Rhineland, or is this 1938 and Czechoslovakia? I am thinking it is the latter rather than the former. Russia has allies out there that can cause us pain in the short run; Iran, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, the leftists all over the world.

Then there are the wild cards like Pakistan and China.

We may have delayed too much already by not taking a stronger stand with the invasion of Georgia as it is.

I've been feeling that way since the Brits decided to look the other way regarding forced marriage - and you'd be amazed at that 'new reality' playing out in our big cities here in the east, so many multiple-wife households.

As a former NY'er, the whole damn thing - the small lapses of order on the national stage mirroring the major lack of order on the world stage reminds me of Rudy's 'broken windows' insights (tho' I didn't agree with RG all the time).

Well, sort of, but not quite:

Although generally thought of as a Vietnam War era weapon which has been superseded by more powerful and sophisticated designs such as the SMAW and AT4, the M72 LAW has found a new lease of life in the ongoing (2006) operations in Iraq by the US Army and Afghanistan by the Canadian Army. The low cost and light weight of the LAW, combined with a proliferation of lightly-armored targets, make it ideal for the type of urban combat seen in Iraq and Afghanistan.[1]

Obama doesn't want to punish young women with children. This comes from first hand experience. When Obama's father was "punished with a child", shortly after completing his free education in Hawaii, he ran off back to Kenya, where he punished another woman with a child. Ironically, this child just turned up to punish Obama.

1 cup oil---I use sweet almond oil
3/4 ounce beeswax
1 cup lukewarm water --I use rosewater
30-50 drops of essential oil of choice--I skip this and the rosewater is lovely by itself.

Oli & beeswax in a pyrex jar, melt on top of a double boiler ( I cheat and nuke it slowly), just until the beeswax melts. Cool slightly but don't let beeswax harden; just let a thin ring form around the rim. Put the rosewater in the blender (I bought a cheap blender dedicated to lotion& creams), and remove the center ring from the lid. Turn blender on high speed and slowly add the oil/beeswax. Just like homemade mayo. Store it in the fridge. Keeps almost a year.

I have a bunch of 1/2 ounce containers I fill for Christmas bags, along with bath salt, glycerin soap, lip balm, and an ingredient list. They are great teacher gifts and leave no clutter.

Answer to #3: The same reason the PLO was allowed free access to Italy and Greece, a deal had been made.

320 R.A.D. Dad  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 12:37:31pm

It's time for the U.S. leadership to start LEADING. Start TALKING to the people of the U.S. and to the WORLD. Start calling the lies LIES, start DENYING LOUDLY that ANY ethnic cleansing was going. Start a CONSTANT drumbeat about the REAL violence on civilians and that the RUSSIANS are the aggressors. Loudly and often. This is the secret the LEFT has mastered. Keep you message going, keep it in front of the people, and eventually whether your message is true or not, the people will get it.

Thing is even when the right HAS THE TRUTH they FAIL to communicate it.

Iraq and it's unpopularity is PRIMARILY a result of absolutely ATROCIOUS leadership and communication on the part of the Bush administration. It was a just war from the beginning, and though there have been a number of screw ups (like not FLOODING the nation with ground troops until stability was achieved, instead letting things get out of hand before finally waking up to the need of a surge of boots on the ground) this wars BIGGEST failure has been NON-Communication on the part of our leadership.

Also, are the people of Georgia unarmed? I'd think those Russians would have to stay under heavy cover constantly for fear of having their heads blown off by snipers any time the poked it out of a bunker. An armed nation is VERY hard to pacify without taking paying a large price in casualties.

In fact I would say that the biggest evidence that our invasion and occupation of Iraq was viewed as a positive step towards freedom by most Iraqis is that the number of snipers was relatively low, especially considered almost every household was and continues to be armed. Were the majority of Iraqi's truly opposed to the goals of the U.S. we'd have to bomb most of that nation into complete rubble and kill of a large part of it's population before we could walk past any Iraqi household without taking fire. Fact of the matter is the biggest portion of Iraqi casualties were created by the Iraqi's on Iraqi's. We were very selective in our targeting and casualties as a result of OUR actions are only a very small percentage of the Iraqi causalities, and those casualties were very tightly targeted to actual fighters with minimal collateral damage resulting, probably the least in any war of this magnitude.

Not really, none of the US new and approved LAW replacements are effective against a main battle tank, especially those with reactive armor.

But it does appear that (by rumor only) anti-armor weapons that Georgia bought from Israel work just fine (evidenced by the junk of the Russian tanks sitting in various places in Georgia)

The missile rumored to have been used against the Russian main battle tanks (with reactive armor) is the: [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Spike Missile

I have been unable to find anything on the web to confirm this.

I guess we will find out some day. Meanwhile I hope that there are shipments of this weapon on the way to Georgia.

I hope they get there soon, because when they are needed, there will be no more shipments of anything into Georgia.
