Monkeys, monkeys everywhere an not a drop to drink. Gotta go back to Georgia.

Somehow I think the monkey is more technologically sophisticated than the Iranian nitwits who came up with this (ht to jcm for the initial find).

The Japanese should probably have offered the monkey a nice hot bath, a nice soothing massage. All that time in the subway system is sure to leave one in need of rest and relaxation.

So there's a little monkey in the huge airport and everyone is hysterical. Pathetic. That's how green/back to earth most people are. Nature is fine when you watch it on NatGeo but if it's in the same room, Valium is required.

Beheading threat made on Canadian bus

EDMONTON, Alberta, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Alberta arrested a man on an Edmonton-bound Greyhound bus for allegedly threatening to behead two passengers.
The news emerged Wednesday of the incident Monday night in which brothers Josh and Andrew MacDougall said the man sat beside them and was behaving and talking erratically, the Edmonton Sun reported.

They said the man went to the washroom and returned with a knife and began stabbing the seat. They told the RCMP they told the driver three times about the man and each time the driver cautioned the man but continued driving, the report said.

Beheading threat made on Canadian bus

What's in the water up north?

Made the really bad mistake of taking the bus from Atlanta to Chattanooga to pick up a vehicle from parents. It is nothing like an airport. I missed two buses and arrived 8 hours late because I couldn't understand the bus departure announcements. On the bus I sat next to the only recognizably sane person, and he was a truck driver, a pretty reasonable fellow. Problem was he had the window seat and I had the aisle exposing me to more of the unstable passengers. We struck up a conversation between me and the veteran truck driver and Mr. Newbie truck driver, who had the brains of a government educated 8th grader, and absolutely knew everything about driving a rig. By this time twilight had faded to darkness and about midway into the trip the fellow in the next aisle, a Hispanic and unable to speak English started to have an excited and serious conversation with himself in Spanish for the rest of the trip. When we arrived in Chattanooga my parents met me and had the pleasure of watching Mr. Newbie Truck-driver arriving, and finding the company wasn't providing Transport to HQ, and Greyhound had lost his luggage go absolutely ballistic. Nope I'll never forget it and I'll walk before I take the bus.....

I had a similar thing happen to me...

We were all out at the zoo one day, I was doing some acting, walking on the railing of the gorilla exhibit. I fell in. Everyone screamed and my brother jumped in after me, forgetting that he had blueberries in his front pocket. The gorillas just went wild. They jumped all over his body and threw him around like a rag doll to get to those blueberries. One gorilla would throw him to another gorilla who tossed him to another. Everyone panicked and cried out for somebody to help but it was too late. The gorillas beat him to death before the zookeepers could gas them all.

The gorillas beat him to death before the zookeepers could gas them all.

re: #189 Silhouette

While it may be PC to insist upon African American instead of black, it is not a matter of PC that it is wrong to call an adult black man "boy."
It is demeaning because it denies him his adult status.
Likewise, calling grown women "girls".

Is calling a white man "boy" demeaning?
Doesn't it depend on the context?
Racist/sexist PC - IMO.

OT ... Some interesting reading tonight for my son's storytime. "Mister Seahorse" by Eric Carle belongs a few thread back with NatGeo and the Evolution of Sex. "Duck For President" by Doreen Cronin appears to be the story of Barack Obama's meteoric rise throught the Illinois Legislature, US Senate, and onto the national stage.

229 Bob in Breckenridge  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 7:48:21pm

Ice Fishing...

The Presidential election was too close to call. Neither McCain nor the Obamessiah had enough votes to win. There was much talk about ballot recounting, court challenges, etc., but a week-long ice fishing competition seemed the sportsmanlike way to settle things. The candidate that caught the most fish at the end of the week would win the election.

After much back and forth discussion, it was decided that the contest take place on a remote frozen lake in northern Minnesota .

There were to be no observers present, and both men were to be sent out separately on this isolated lake and return at 5 P.M. with their catch for counting and verification by a team of neutral parties. At the end of the first day, John McCain returned to the starting line and he had ten fish.

Soon, Obama returned and had no fish. Well, everyone assumed he was just having another 'bad hair' day or something and hopefully, he would catch up the next day.

At the end of the 2nd day John McCain came in with 20 fish and Obama came in again with none.

That evening, Harry Reid got together secretly with Obama and said, 'Barack, I think John McCain is a low-life, cheatin' son-of-a-gun. I want you to go out tomorrow and don't even bother with fishing. Just spy on him and see just how he is cheating.'

The next night (after John McCain returns with 50 fish), Reid said to Obama, 'Well, tell me, how is John McCain cheating?'

Obama replied, 'Harry, you're not going to believe this, but he's cutting holes in the ice!'

Experience counts!

Ok, this is going to sound corny, but as a writer, I LOVE TO MEET UNUSUAL people. For what ever reasons, I get along with almost anyone. And I can have them talking up a storm in no time.

I can't think of a single script that I have written that didn't use my interactions with different people as the foundations of my characters.

I love that - and I'm going to look up your stuff now, Walter.

It's good to be bold and not shy. I love to meet people wherever I go, talk to them, and bring them out of their little shells. I'm totally not shy.

I get along with everyone everywhere I go, and I have them chatting away. As far as I'm concerned, whether a person is a security guard, a bum, or a fund manager, I will talk to him or her the same way. My boss chided me for taking the subway home at midnight from a Marilyn Manson concert. I had no problems - both to the concert and back, I ended up making friends. Everyone was very nice. On the ride home, I had a great conversation with a security guard just getting off work. He said sometimes he thinks all he does is work and go to church. :D

I went to the San Diego Zoo once, and went up the hill to the gorilla exhibit.

There was a glass wall. On one side, a large tree trunk provided seating for a parabola of gorillas. On the other side, an arc of Homo Sapiens was seated on benches.

Both were watching each other intently.

Suddenly, a gorilla with a proud silver back charged the glass and pounded it, eliciting a gasp from the clothed primates. As he turned to shuffle back to his seat, his back looked strangely purple, as if it had been stained by blueberries.

I'm not much for most gore films. Although I have to admit, I like the "Saw" series. Probably becuase I thought the first one was very clever, more so than a lot of those sort of low budget movies.

Then of course, since they kept adding to the story of the killer in the sequels, I got hooked into the others.

what kind of bear? grizzly or a bk bear?

No, a cinnamon (sp?) bear. Brownish, a bit smaller than the grizzly or black. At least that's what it looked like, I didn't ask it for it's I.D.

293 Cartman  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 8:06:19pm

My Pop and I were fishing in Canada one time, and a moose stuck it's snout right through an open cabin window. I could swear it was smiling. I was kinda glad I was indoors vs. out.

I have an animal story (true one, really). I was camping in New Mexico, and I was using a tarp as a tent, "v" folded, open at both ends.

About 11 pm at night, I have this bear decide to sniff oround my feet, he walks right through the tent, in one side, out the other.

Laid very still... very, very still.

We've only seen bear tracks in our yard. No actual bear, but we did hear one.
The little dogs would be snacks.

Well, when I was living up north, we use to go to Saranac Lake (NY) and there was this garbage dump there where calls would line up like a drive in movie, with headlight on, watching the bears come foreging (sp?).

A lot of times you would have to jump up on your car roof or hood when they decided to saunter down between the rows of cars.

In light of the rising frequency of human grizzly bear conflicts, the U.S. Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field. We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat. Black bear scat is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear scat has little bells in it and smells like pepper.

LOL That's a keeper.

Anyway, every Canadian has some horror story about bears (I've got mine -- happened decads ago in the northern regions -- think I've told this story before -- it was traumatizing...about a little kid who went camping with his dad and their dog; neither the dog nor the child survived..)

This thread may have gone way OT by now, but anyway I'm writing from Tokyo. It's about 12:30pm Thursday afternoon and I'm home with a bad viral bronchitis.

The monkey was probably one used by a street performer outside Shibuya Station--plenty of those, and I think I've seen monkey acts before there. Ueno Zoo is nowhere near enough for the monkey to have ended up where it was, unless it got on the Yamanote Line at Ueno station, rode the Shibuya-bound train for about 30 minutes or so, and then alighted at Shibuya.

One of the pics I saw showed signs for the Tokyu Toyoko Line with trains bound from Shibuya Stn. down to the Chinatown in Yokohama. It would make sense for a monkey to dash from the Hachiko Statue open area in front of Shibuya Stn., scamper up the stairs that lead to either the Toyoko Line or to the Ginza Subway line farther upstairs, and then make for the Toyoko tracks area, which is at the first "landing" level of the stairs.

I don't know if that monkey type is carnivorous, but if so he'd have had plenty to feast on in the Shibuya area. A couple of months ago, the TV ran a disturbing report on an infestation of huge "mega-rats" plying the mountains of junk-food garbage in Shibuya.

Thats not a turtle, its a sea monster....did you ever read about the guy who went into a Chimpanzee cage here in LA and got ripped apart....they even tore his groin off. He was dragged to safety, but I guess he's not really a guy anymore.

i read abt a guy and his wife who had been visiting a private primate sanctuary in L.A. for many yrs.
feeding the chimps and "bonding" w/ them.
they went one afternoon and the animals they had been 'relating to' had gotten loose.
and it was full on mayhem and near murder. the man tried to protect his wife and the chimps savagely assaulted him.
tore his fingers off. he lost an eye. just brutal. terrifying. a vicious attack. the owner of the park had to shoot his own animals. iirc.

Those little bastards are no joke. I once went to a monkey park in Kyoto, atop a small mountain. There were a couple hundred of them walking around, eating, lounging, touching themselves, etc. I wanted to get a close-up picture of a baby monkey. The mom's bared fangs convinced me otherwise. Point is, even though its not a "predator" so to speak, it could do a hell of a job on a fully domesticated commuter, especially an oldster or a kid.

Escape From a Bear

There’s a guy who’s hiking in the woods one day when a bear chases him up a really tall tree.
The bear started to climb the tree, so the guy climbed up higher. Then, the bear climbed down and went away.

So the guy starts to climb down the tree. Suddenly, the bear returns, and this time he’s brought an even bigger bear with him. The two bears climb up the tree, the bigger bear going higher than the first. But the guy climbed even higher still, so the bears couldn’t reach him. Eventually, the bears went away.

Naturally quite relieved, the guy starts down the tree again. Suddenly, the two bears return. But this time the guy knew he was in big trouble.

Each bear was carrying a BEAVER.

Ok, not really a DANGEROUS animal story, but maybe kind of funny.

Back in 1996, IIRC, I was working on the movie "Three Ninjas - High Noon on Mega Mountain." It was Oct. here in Colorado. We were on location at an upscale community. I was playing a moving man, moving the prebesent love interest and her family into a house.

Well, in Oct. the yellow jackets swarm, and this was a rather new home development, so a lot of natural habitat had gotten dug up to build this development. The yellow jackets were not happy.

It was a 12 hour shoot, call was at 5:00am. As soon as the sun was up, the yellow jackets started buzzing around. Lot's of them, all day long. Lunch was a mess, wasps dive bombing our plates of food, sitting in our glasses.

Oh, wardrobe put me in a BRIGHT ORANGE JUMPSUIT. Enough said!

i saw a nature show w/ a guy who was 'mentoring' abandoned grizzly cubs. he skeedaddled a big mean male bear w/ a 10 ft. stream of pepper spray from a can.
that was scary. the little bears were behind him and the massive male was charging up the river bank, in a serious way. he had murder on his mind.
the old man pulled the can from his waist band and sheeeeeeeew, right in the bear's face. he turned and ran so fast. buried his face in the water. and swam away.
i think it worked better than a bullet.

Polar bears stalk humans, like shadows flitting along (bears will follow people silently, then after the bear attacks, if another person approaches, the bear will lie down on top of the injured person -- hiding its prey -- and other people can walk by and not notice...look like a mound of snow...)

I saw a mom grizzly and two cubs one day - they were trailing along behind her. The one nearest her kept right up, but the second one in line stopped and sat down in a puddle. He hit the water with one of his paws and the water splashed around him. Then he did it again. And again - he looked like a baby in a bathtub. Mom finally noticed he was missing - turned and apparently told him to get his butt over there, because he got up and scampered after her. Cutest thing I ever saw.
From a long distance off.
