Giuliani to Give Keynote at GOP Convention

Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 9:30:16 pm PDT

Featured keynote speaker at the Republican Convention: Rudy Giuliani.

Former New York City mayor and presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani will be the keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday, September 1st. His Tuesday night address will follow primetime speeches from Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, who are seen as two of the most likely candidates to become John McCain’s running mate, were not granted primetime speaking slots. Romney is currently slated to speak on Wednesday, Sept 3rd, while Pawlenty is scheduled to join Charlie Crist, Sam Brownback and Mel Martinez to address the convention on Thursday, Sept. 4th, before McCain’s convention-closing address.(The schedule could change.)

Whomever McCain selects as his running mate will give an address in primetime on Wednesday, along with Cindy McCain and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindel.

Former Democrat Joe Lieberman and Vice President Dick Cheney will speak on the convention’s first day. They will be followed in primetime by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush.

I wish Rudy were our nominee but I hope this does not mean he is the VP pick. McCain needs to select either a conservative like Hunter to energize the base. Or a woman like Palin to attract the Hillary supporters away from the Democrats. The last thing he needs is another male, centrist Republican, like himself.

14 BGOH  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 9:37:24pm

Great to hear! I'm also thrilled to hear that Sarah Palin will be given a place of honor at the convention. I truly believe that she is a future leader of the GOP, and it is good to see her getting a prime time slot!

Now, it would be nice if CBS could spell JindAl's name right...

I'm still operating on my theory that the closer to the center a ticket is, the better its chance of winning. If McCain, a centrist Republican, chooses Lieberman, a centrist (former) Democrat, it would be like a quasar of centrism, expelling Obamatons to the fringes of the known universe.

I respect Lieberman even though I don't agree with him on most issues. The problem is McCain is likely a one termer and when he retires his VP has the advantages of incumbency. If McCain chooses Lieberman and he does retire in 2012 that leaves us with a Democrat in a very strong chance of winning the 2012 election.

re: #39 zombie

Me too. But by design, thats just about impossible.

The Presidential candidate has to win a majority, not a plurality of electoral votes. If no one wins a majority of the electoral votes, then it gopes to the House where each State's representatives get one single vote and to win a candidate would need to win 26 States. It is close to impossible for a 3rd Party candidate to ever be President.

re: #9 victor_yugo

Jindal had some promise, though I have cooled on him. I was very excited about him until the ID issue, followed by the pay hike flap.

I think it is far too early to grant Jindal the nod for VP. Just because the Dems have gone with a candidate of limited experience does not mean that we follow suit. I think we can look to Jindal in a few years, when it is more apparent how he has cleaned up Louisiana.

No matter who McCain picks, HE WILL AUTOMATICALLY GET THE CONSERVATIVE VOTE. If he therefore picks a centrist VP, he will pick up centrist voters, which will put him over the top.

55 Zimriel  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 9:52:23pm

McCain needs executive experience, for the country's sake as well as his own. That rules out another Senator like Lieberman. And he needs someone brave (not Jindal) and competent (not Huckabee).

If he chooses Giuliani he may as well appoint the skeletons of Theodore Roosevelt and Bismarck to his cabinet. It'll be four years of nationalist progressive "bully" B.S., ugh. What's more, the Democrats will campaign against that ticket ("war, war, war, war, neocon, war"). Giuliani would be a perfect AG though.

I'd like Palin but I will settle for Romney.

True. They have no convictions. And yet, they vote. They decide elections. They vote for Reagan one year, then Clinton twelve years later. They have no core beliefs. Hard as it may be for us to imagine, centrism and "not standing for anything" actually are a plus for many voters. But as I asked above, wouldn't Lieberman have to drop the Independent and become a Republican, even in in name only?
I'd personally rather have Rudy, but if not Rudy, then someone like Sarah Palin.

Not sure about that. If McCain picks him, wouldn't the Party have to cave?

Sure, Rudy'd be OK with me too, but I doubt he'll get the nod.

re: #74 Mich-again

I agree with your analysis. Whoever owns the center will win.

Well, yes and no. It truly depends on the turnout. Dems already outnumber Republicans in terms of registered voters and with Obama - so far - the Dem base does seem to be a lot more energized.
The real battle is for the Independents - or at least those who say they are independents and McCain would have to take a huge % of them AND HAVE the Republican Base all on board with him. While that would seem to make Lieberman a lock,
I sincerely think enough "conservative" Repub's would not vote at all. Not because Lieberman is an Independent, but because he ran for VP on the Dem Ticket and so I think it's fair to ask where his priorities are and where his loyalties are: he STILL caucuses with the Dems in the Senate.
If not Sarah Palin (who would, I believe, soldify the Republican Base, with McCain himself appealing to the Idependents) then Romney.

An Animals trial continues in the Northwest.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - A boy who was kidnapped, tortured and shot by Joseph Edward Duncan III likely suffered excruciating pain before his death, a forensic pediatrician told jurors Wednesday.

[snip]

Duncan pleaded guilty in December to 10 federal counts in the 2005 kidnapping of the Coeur d'Alene-area children and the murder of the boy. A jury must decide whether Duncan should be executed or spend life in prison without parole.

Duncan, acting as his own attorney in the sentencing phase, suggested in cross-examining Cooper that the girl was exaggerating her brother's injury.

"How much in your experience do children tend to elaborate or exaggerate and fill in details ... especially after a traumatic experience like that?" Duncan asked.

He is the guy who wrote a report for President Bush before the Iraq war (A Perfect Storm) warning him that if Saddam Hussein were taken out, it would unleash a bloody sectarian war between the Shia and Sunni. It was discredited initially, but then later his analysis turned out to be 100% correct. GWB eventually realized Crocker knew what he was talking about so he asked him to be Ambassador and formulate the plan to fix the situation in Iraq. And since he took that job everything has indeed turned around.

Since we're having a veep conversation, I think it is important to bear in mind that it is important to bear in mind that whoever McCain picks as a VP should be a strong candidate for the nomination in 2012. If we're all honest with ourselves, John McCain is going to be a one term president (and I think he will announce just that at the convention), so whoever is his VP has a leg up in the next cycle. I hadn't thought about it until recently, but that brings Jindal and Palin back into play immediately, even though I had been operating under the assumption that they were just too young.

If either of them could help McCain win this year, with the experience that either will gain as VP will be invaluable in '12. I like either of them much better than any of the boring choices that have been mentioned so far (Pawlenty, Christ, etc.).

According to the book, Soldier: The Life of Colin Powell by Washington Post reporter Karen DeYoung, as the Bush administration was preparing for war with Iraq in late 2002, then Secretary of State, Colin Powell ordered Crocker and then Special Assistant to the Secretary of State, William Burns to prepare a secret memo examining the risks associated with a U.S. invasion of Iraq.[4] The six-page memo, titled "The Perfect Storm", stated that toppling Saddam Hussein could unleash long-repressed sectarian and ethnic tensions, that the Sunni minority would not easily relinquish power, and that powerful neighbors such as Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia would try to move in to influence events. It also cautioned that the United States would have to start from scratch building a political and economic system because Iraq's infrastructure was in tatters.
174 zombie  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 10:24:07pm

And don't forget the Jew Factor with Lieberman: currently 70% of Jews are planning to vote for Obama. With Lieberman running, I'd be willing to bet many of those will switch sides. Jews are only 2% of the US population, but likely more like 3% - 4% of the voters. A substantial enough swing could move 1 million votes away from Obama to McCain. And that could be enough to swing the entire election, considering how close they are these days.

But if Lieberman actually has to officially join the Republicans, then I suppose he'll never get picked.

Jindal is just too young. And inexperienced. I think McCain's VP will be scrutinized very carefully due to McCain's age. There is a real change he might not make it through 4 years.

re: #150 BGOH

Is that smart to announce it right AT the convention? Americans like security. A lot of people would be wary of voting for someone who is limiting themselves to four years, dont you think?

Rudy's my first choice for veep, especially now that Russia's gotten frisky. Rudy could pick right up immediately if McCain were ill or worse. Joe L would be a fab Sec State.

But the keynote speaker's never been the VP choice, I guess. sniffle. Pawlenty would be good, Mitt would be good, Mark Sanford would be good. If Obama picks old fart Sam Nunn, even Fred becomes a possibility. I like Palin and Jindal (except for the ID thing) but they are too young. with Russia getting frisky, VP is very important.

shrug, we'll see.

Pawlenty's not boring. He tore poor Kaine a new one on that Sunday morning show, and one reason some of the blue noses don't like him is that he likes to tell jokes sometimes. Ingraham and Malkin have a problem with that, it seems.

Rove on capturing the center

Neither candidate will be well served by making their principal focus the demonization of the opposition. True believers inside the halls and loyalists in front of their televisions will demand a certain level of abuse of the other party. But more Americans are undecided than have been in nearly 30 years. Voters want to learn more about these two men, their personal values and their public vision. Every possible minute should be spent on these.

Is that smart to announce it right AT the convention? Americans like security. A lot of people would be wary of voting for someone who is limiting themselves to four years, dont you think?

It is absolutely smart to do. Given John's age, it is reasonable to expect that the age issue will not be major in this cycle, but it certainly would be in the next (he would be 80 in his final year in office if re-elected).

Plus, if he wins with the intention of being a single-term president, he has the opportunity to get a lot of things done that a president who is seeking re-election simply wouldn't be able to do. In short, a one term president can take many more political chances than one who is trying to run for a second term, or one who has won a second term and is, effectively, a lame duck.

A one-term announcement at the convention would be brilliant. And I don't think the polls would even be close from then until November 4th if he made such an announcement.

/I have an idea, why doesn't he just pick an uber lefty like Lieberman as his VP and flush all that directly down the toilet?

I don't think he's going to pick Lieberman anyway, now that I learn he'd have to convert to Republicanism in order to run. SO it's a moot point.

I think the McCain bounce came from his weeks-long ad campaign bashing Obama, not from the single church appearance.

Lieberman is neither a Republican, nor a Democrat. I'd rather have Republican socialism than Democratic party socialism. The last thing I need is daily anger management and tolerating diversity classes.

A friend of mine distilled the differences between the two parties thusly:

In the Democratic party you can have the freedom to act differently but thinking differently is verbotten.

In the Republican party, one can think differently but to act differently is verbotten.

Killian, I don't think there even is a Republican Party any more. I think what we now have is the Socialist Party, formerly known as the Democrat Party, and the Democrat Party, formerly known as the Republican Party.
Of course, I'm not registered as either, so what do I know?

A.) McCain is soft on immigration. That's a plus in their view. And B.) There is so much bad blood between blacks and Mexicans in LA that I think there is a lingering hesitation among LA Hispanics to vote for someone black -- to be perfectly frank.

"bad blood" must be zombie speak for "going around killing each other based on skin color and trying to run different races out their 'neighborhoods'"

anywhere else it'd draw either US intervention or the UN to do nothing. here, it doesn't even make the papers, unless it's an article to deny that it's racial.

Huh? Please explain this guiding belief system of mine. I just think that as far as domestic issues, he's a card carrying liberal no better than BO, Hillery, Kerry, Edwards, etc.

Not someone I'd want second in line to the President.

You answered your own question. You see a politician who votes liberal on various issues, that automatically is a negative in your book. To countless other people, that is NOT an automatic negative. Nor is a politician who sometimes or often votes conservative. These people choose who to vote for according to entirely non-ideological reasons, including: name-recognition, charisma, independence from existing structures, patriotism, etc. They couldn't care less who is branded a liberal or a conservative, nor how they vote once in the Senate or wherever.

351 Pawn of the Oppressor  Wed, Aug 20, 2008 11:30:55pm

Palin would be a provocative choice in every sense of the word.

If she is McPain's VP pick, mark my words - The lefties, seeing everything sexually as they usually do, will unleash an absolute torrent of bile. A relatively younger and attractive woman as VP? Please, we'll be hearing about how she's Mac's house mistress, a "trophy VP", she'll be called out as window dressing, named a "gender traitor" by the so-called "feminists", and of course there will be insinuations that she's a whore, and disgusting photoshops, and op-eds dripping with mysoginy and double-standards from left-leaning columnists, and all the rest of the bile and hypocrisy we've come to expect from that side of the aisle when somebody steps out of their identity politics categories.

Interesting! Then it's not as bad as I first feared. Obama is down to 57% of the Jewish vote. And hopefully dropping.

It was a pleasant surprise. I feel that more Jews are awakening to the danger he is for our country, and for the rest of the free world. He speaks trash...and I still feel that he would side with the arabs against Israel.

Can you imagine him taking a 3 AM phone call, if, G-d forbid, anything happened that needed a swift response?

9/11 is still very much in my mind. And now? The situation in Georgia, with the bad old days of the USSR being reconstructed by the KGB alumni, Putin?

Q & A here

Q81. "In current usage, both the President and Vice President are elected on the same ballot. Does the Constitution as currently amended allow for these executives to be from differing parties?"

A. The Constitution neither prohibits nor encourages the two be from the same party. They are voted on separately in the electoral college, so theoretically, the President and Vice President could be from different parties. However, many states have laws which force their electors to vote for the candidates that the winning party has chosen. There is question about whether an elector could be prosecuted for doing whatever they want once the election is over, but the point is mostly irrelevant - the party that wins picks the electors, who are generally party loyalists, so are unlikely to vote against the party.

I have studied both parties for 20 years, and neither has been consistent in their platforms, but a pivotal moment came in 1968 when the hard Left basically took over the Democrat Party. There were some hawks/conservatives still, but their numbers have steadily declined since then.

As for the Republicans, they have always been a fairly activist party, starting with their serious abolitionist roots in a small town in Wisconsin, in 1862, They have been consistent about using the power of the state for social change, and seldom been afraid of foreign entanglements, which the exception of the Pre WWII era, when, oddly, they were firmly isolationist. As for conservatism, it appears to have been a fluke, if measured over the entire span of the party.

My hope is Lieberman for DoD, Bolton for State and Giuliani for Justice. Who does that leave for the VP slot? Looks like a choice between Romney and Hunter. Here in the Bay Area almost all of the Jewish folks I know plan to vote for Obama. Pretty disheartening. But there are areas of the country where the Jewish population isn't so insanely left. Drawing a conclusion about the voting habits of Jews or anybody else based on a sample drawn within the Bay Area seems poor research technique. A large and rapidly growing percentage of the Jews are not 4th and 5th generation assimilated liberals but recent immigrant communities and allied highly orthodox groups. One group of them spectacularly sold their votes en bloc to Hillary last election cycle so there can be, as with all closed or new communities, ethical problems but there is also a sympathy for conservative positions and a fierce rejection of Communism and Islamism.

As for conservatism, it appears to have been a fluke, if measured over the entire span of the party.

There is some merit in this, I think. After 1968 the Republican party became more reactionary, against the (real or perceived) threat of the rise of the harder leftists in the Democrat party. The election of Reagan very much was a reaction against the trends in the Democrat party, IMO.

Of course one could counter with the argument that FDR was a socialist, and the Republicans of his day reacted strongly against him.

Then there were the movements of the religious conservative, formerly Democrats, into the Republican camp starting in the 60's.

We are left with today a larger nation (> 300 million, and growing) and that also means the factions within either of the 2 large parties will have more people... I'm wondering how much longer the 2 party system can keep trying the "broad tent" strategies.

It's a 92 Sedan de Ville nicked "Elvis", but he's left the building. Too tired of fixing stuff, but I still get people coming up to me with the likes of "wow. classic styling". And it is.

More on Cantor, and what the Demonrats said when they realized he is Jewish: DNC: 'Eric Cantor is Jewish, oh my!'

Any of my fellow Jews who see this, and still vote Demonrat?

You're nuts!

I am being dragged off the keyboard! Help! ;)

re: #408 lifeofthemind

One group of them spectacularly sold their votes en bloc to Hillary last election cycle so there can be, as with all closed or new communities, ethical problems but there is also a sympathy for conservative positions and a fierce rejection of Communism and Islamism.

Somehow, selling their votes en banc doesn't smack of "rejecting Communism." In fact, I'd say quite the opposite.

Oh boy; Barry just one upped his pay grade comment by trying to sound like a bug boy:

Obama: Russia, U.S. should not ‘charge into’ other countries

“We’ve got to send a clear message to Russia and unify our allies,” Obama told a crowd of supporters in Virginia. “They can’t charge into other countries. Of course it helps if we are leading by example on that point.”

Barry, from the bottom of my heart, and I really truly mean this:

Go eat a bag of dicks.

Just a bag? After a comment like that, I hope he dines upon a cubic ton of feces.

Sounds like some one wants you in bed at a decent hour. ;)

Have yourself a good night if you're leaving.

Well, its obvious he is already full of shit. The dicks would just be to cleanse the palate.

Barry Goldwater

Even if he were alive, there would be an issue , given that both McCain & Goldwater would be AZ residents ...
