Obama: We're Not Setting a Good Example for Russia

Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 10:29:20 am PDT

Barack Obama’s naïve, almost schoolyard-level attitude toward international politics is on display again today, as he says the US needs to set a better example for Russia: Obama: Russia, U.S. should not ‘charge into’ other countries.

“We’ve got to send a clear message to Russia and unify our allies,” Obama told a crowd of supporters in Virginia. “They can’t charge into other countries. Of course it helps if we are leading by example on that point.”

This is normal “progressive” thinking, and you find these bizarre assumptions everywhere in leftist circles: if we just achieve some noble ideal of behavior, that alone will be enough to usher in a new era of peace and global good will — and in the meantime, it’s important to let our adversaries know that we’re not perfect and we understand their feelings.

But not even Jimmy Carter was this starry-eyed.

Amazing -- does Obama actually think there's a valid comparison between the US invasion of Iraq and the Russian rape of Georgia...?

Or does he believe that if America acts "nicer"--by allowing totalitarian murderers to remain in power everywhere--we'll bring out the better angels of Russian nature?

He's commenting on this? Did he get a promotion into a higher pay grade?

And he doesn't see the difference between throwing out a tyrant who threatened others, allowing him to be replaced by a democracy, and invading to overthrow a democratically elected government that was doing nothing other than defend itself.

He shouldn't even be in the Senate.

Let's see...

US goes in on UN mandate to remove Saddam Hussein. Establishes democratically elected government, and manages to defeat AQ in Iraq. Gets country peaceful, and the biggest complaint people have in Iraq is the electric utility not having enough capacity for all the new appliances.

Russia goes into Georgia unilaterally to remove democratically elected government. Establishes military control over country. Pisses off locals and surrounding nations in the process. Biggest complaint is regarding the Russian occupation.

Nice moral equivalency there, Barack "The Zero" Obama.

How about using more than one synapse, Mr. Change-WE-Can-Believe-In?
Georgia was not putting people into shredders, invading neighbors, attempting (however poorly) to develop weapons capable of blackmailing the world, funding suicide bombing, or ruling by force and intimidation.
The US was not trying to take territory or resources, and has gained in no way other than an increase in global security that might develop and dead terrorists.

The issue is not a "charge into other countries." The issue is conquest of a free people.

Ironically, the 40th anniversary of Soviet agression agaisnt another small state with aspirations for freedom-like reforms is upon us; the 1968 occupation of Czechoslovakia was only 40 short years ago. The present echoes the past.

71 lawhawk  Thu, Aug 21, 2008 10:40:07am

Lead by example?

How's this for an example:
We're the beacon of freedom and human rights and democracy. Iraq and Afghanistan freed 50 million people from the yoke of oppression due to totalitarian regimes that permitted no freedom of speech, freedom of religion, or other freedoms.

You had to watch out for religious police, who could string you up for showing too much skin, playing music too loudly, etc.

You might get scooped off the street and fed into a plastic shredder for the amusement of the leaders. Or watch as your daughters were taken away to be brutally raped.

Yes, lead by example...

What is Russia doing now? They aren't following our example, but adhering to the same policies that George Kennan noted the Russians (and Soviets) had long done. They treated all of their neighbors either as enemies or as vassals. If you weren't one, you were the other.

That's why freedom loving neighbors are so fearful of the Russians. They know what might be coming next as Georgia found out by trying to fend off the South Ossetian separatists - it provided just enough pretext for the Russians to engage in their own little Anschluss.

The last time I went to Walmart, I discovered an aisle about the same size as the one that has baby clothes - full of doggie clothes and booties! (I kid you not!) This morning I heard a TV commercial targeting "pets and pet parents." Pet parents?

another symptom/effect of the low birth rate and "alternative" lifestyles. they are filling a need, both purchaser and seller.

I don't dress my cat up, but I am guilty of calling myself her parent. Pet care can be a bit like child care. You'd be surprised how helpless they are sometimes.

No I wouldn't. We have 3 full time cats, a part time cat and one who has recently adopted himself. And a dog. They might be helpless, but the cats make it very clear who is in charge, who holds the reins of power and just exactly who is the servant. The dog, not so much. She is extremely good at having dinner with the family and making me take her for a ride. She also starts licking her lips when we turn into the mall - because of the ice cream place in the middle of the parking lot.

Obama says: “We’ve got to send a clear message to Russia and unify our allies,” Obama told a crowd of supporters in Virginia. “They can’t charge into other countries. Of course it helps if we are leading by example on that point.”

Charles says: This is normal “progressive” thinking, of course, and you can find these bizarre assumptions everywhere in leftist circles: if we just achieve some noble ideal of behavior, that alone will be enough to usher in a new era of peace and global good will — and it’s important to let our adversaries know that we’re not perfect and we understand their feelings.

Charles, I think you're vastly underestimating the disgustingness of Obama's remark. It's not just that he has the naive moonbat belief that America is the Daddy and if Daddy models good behavior for the kids (rest of world) then the kids will grow up to be nice little adults; but if Daddy is mean and lashes out with violence, then that will turn all the kiddies into abusive, violent grownups. No, it's worse than that, because Obama is directly drawing a moral equivalence between the foreign policy actions of the US and the foreign policy actions of thugocracies and dictatorships. He's saying the invasion of Iraq has the same moral foundation (i.e. none) as the invasion of Ossetia. He's agreeing with the moonbat bumpersticker that says "War = terrorism."

He is not fit to be President of the United States. Yes, perhaps, just to keep us on our toes, American society needs a insulting cynic off on the sidelines to occasionally point out our failings. But we don't want that person to be president!

When my opponest refused to vote yes or no in the state assembly and US Senate, it was to decieve the American people so that he could better achieve his personal ambitions."

Obama in his extensive world travels must have been impressed with the way London bobbies deal with criminals: "Halt! Or I shall ask you to halt again." as they would say across the pond, "What an arse."

Isn't that exactly the way that Condi Rice is dealing with Russian in the Georgian crisis?

50% say UN Peacekeepers Should be Sent to Georgia, Only 22% Want U.S. Troops Involved

A plurality of voters (48%) continue to believe that Republican presidential candidate John McCain is better able to deal with Russia, but 40% think Democrat Barack Obama is the more capable. Last week, 51% rated McCain as the best equipped to handle the crisis in Georgia, compared to 36% who believed that of Obama.

Interestingly, while 88% of Republicans now say McCain would handle dealings with Russia better, so do 20% of Democrats. But 65% of Democrats – and 8% of Republicans – believe Obama is the better choice. Unaffiliated voters give McCain the edge 45% to 38%.

Kind of tired of hearing the invasion of a sovereign country stuff myself. Just a few points.

We had been at war with Iraq ever since 1991 with a conditional cease fire in place.

Many people would consider firing cruise missiles in to a country an act of war. I don't know the exact quantity fired in to Iraq during the Clinton years but I do know that several dozen were used in October 1998.

Why were the cruise missiles fired you ask? Because of WMD's of course.

Right. Fix the economy. As in spay and neuter.

That's the kind of fix that Obama has in store. Tax and spend; brand new entitlements that take money and throw it into the morass of government bureaucracy and call it insufficient - therefore demanding more money and tax hikes to cover low levels of service and satisfaction.

Barack Obama's Junk Is Presidential

Let's take a look at all the reasons he is a clear-cut choice for the next leader of our nation.

1.) The resemblance to Will Smith.
2.) He's good-looking.
3.) He is well-endowed. Some will argue that this is less important than foreign policy experience. These people have obviously never dealt with a man with a tiny penis and the ensuing problems of arrogance and short-temper that result from years of over-compensating.

These reasons, combined with the fact that he is Oprah-approved, make the man practically unbeatable. So, there you have it. Now you don't even have to skip 'The Hills' next time they have one of those stupid debates.

Why people should have to pass some kind of test before voting.

A lot of Dems are already ticked off because Clinton did not get it (so far). Many still maintain she won the votes necessary, she won the states needed and many of the states Obama won are going to the Republicans anyway. If my conversations with Democrat neighbors and relatives (by marriage) are any indicator, many Democrats are voting for McCain or will stay home if BO is the candidate. The only exception I found was my Yellow Dog Democrat neighbor who is near apoplectic about having to do it, but will vote for BO anyway.

So yes, they are between a rock and a hard place, but they are the ones that climbed in there.

Yeah, he'll fix it.

295 razorbacker  Thu, Aug 21, 2008 11:23:29am

I vaguely remember another US President seeking to set a good example for the Russians. He went to a conference and jaw-jawed with the Russian leadership.

How'd that work out? Well, within a year we had 14 days in October.

"Nuclear catastrophe was hanging by a thread ... and we weren't counting days or hours, but minutes."

-Soviet General and Army Chief of Operations, Anatoly Gribkov

The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. The United States armed forces were at their highest state of readiness ever and Soviet field commanders in Cuba were prepared to use battlefield nuclear weapons to defend the island if it was invaded. Luckily, thanks to the bravery of two men, President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khrushchev, war was averted.

In 1962, the Soviet Union was desperately behind the United States in the arms race. Soviet missiles were only powerful enough to be launched against Europe but U.S. missiles were capable of striking the entire Soviet Union. In late April 1962, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev conceived the idea of placing intermediate-range missiles in Cuba. A deployment in Cuba would double the Soviet strategic arsenal and provide a real deterrent to a potential U.S. attack against the Soviet Union.

History. It stutters.

I recently into a new neighborhood surrounded by academics from Kent State University. I am less then a thousand yards from where the shootings occurred in 1970. My neighborhood is filled with 100 year old trees, big green lawns and big 60+ year old houses. The President of the University used to live not 5 doors away. Obama signs outnumber American flags 5 to 1 (I really counted) and I have not seen a McCain sign within 3 miles of here.

I have told my children repeatedly that we now live in the bubble. And although it is nice to live in the bubble you cannot come to beleive that the whole world is like this bubble.

The bubble-folk are really nice people - I have not met anyone that I would not want to have over for dinner and a cocktail. But what I have learned is that they think everyone shares their values and background - educated, peaceful, rational, cultured, intelligent, tolerant etc. The idea that someone might think differently is hard for them to comprehend. I know they find me hard to comprehend.

But the idea that there are some people in the world who are just not peaceful and rational is simply incomprehensible to them. They just cannot wrap their head around the idea of some people being bad - I guess that is why they snicker when Bush says Evil-Doer.

Just an EXCELLENT POST zombie - wish I could give you a thousand updings for that one!

Yes, but even zombie misses the point. The far Left (which in control of the Democratic Party right now, of course) is severely outraged at the disproportionate share of wealth and power the US possesses. They - literally - only embrace actions that would tend to bring us down, while strengthening our competitors and enemies. "Equity", you know.

They know that energy fuels our wealth, for example. Notice that the only additional supply of oil Pelosi is willing to agree to pursuing is tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. From her perspective it has three advantages: 1) It would almost certainly be almost completely ineffective. 2) If it is effective, it could only be so for a short time. 3) It works towards weakening our national security. If #3 were not on the list, there would be no reason for Nancy to back it, barring a major grassroots backlash that could strip her of her power.

Their policy of weakening us - as a moral imperative - is actually quite treasonous.

Ponderous John, more interested in slewing to the left than shoring up a conservative Republican base, should write a thank-you note to Putin for invading Georgia, since it has boosted his largely clueless and floundering campaign with both conservatives and independents.

As poor Barry tries to substitute nuance for experience in foreign policy he is more and more exposed. However he can probably rely on McCain hewing too far to the left to compensate for voter defections.

For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. As for the Obamanation, I guess I missed it when Georgia invaded another separate country at peace with it, occupied it, tried to burn it to the ground, and that the UN adopted resolutions against Georgia, then Russia got a coalition of scores of nations to restore sovereignty to that invaded country, then after sovereignty was restored, sixteen additional Resolutions were passed against Georgia over the following decade which Georgia completely ignored and evaded until another final Resolution was passed by the UN Security Council against Georgia?

The bad guys throughout the world are just licking their chops at this election if Obama wins. Wow.

This bozo is not setting a good example for folks thinking of going to the schools he went to. His critical thinking- executive managing skills- are non-existent! This boob must be stopped. Many Dems may be having buyers remorse. Don't let your guilt destroy the country!

For those of us who are old enough to remember the cold war this logic, and I use that term in its loosest sense, sounds frighteningly familiar.

That's it. I'm canceling Comcast. No more Internet, no more cable. This shite is beginning to drive me insane.

We've got to stop "barging into" other people's countries? Hey, Barry! We were occupying Iraq for 12 years before we sent in ground troops in 2003! You can't barge into a place when you're already there, at the invitation of the UN and the Kurds, dipshit!

I'm sorry everybody, but I'm mad as hell and I just can't take it anymore.

This is the Ted Baxter that we're about to elect President? But wait, I'm sorry. That's not fair. To Ted. Millions of people all over the world are still watching him in reruns because he's funny as hell. Our presumptive President-elect can't manage to utter even one coherent thought, let alone a funny joke.

I think I'll just spend the next two months eating myself into a coma.

He's saying the invasion of Iraq has the same moral foundation (i.e. none) as the invasion of Ossetia. He's agreeing with the moonbat bumpersticker that says "War = terrorism.

He'd be agreeing with the cover of the UK's biggest selling political satirical magazine Private Eye then, which has Rice decrying Russia's invasion of a sovereign state and Bush saying "Yeah, aren't we the ones who do that?" Or something alone those lines - don't have a copy to hand.

A satirical mag can get away with it. [Those that can't think these rather simple things through will buy it for the "laugh-at-chimpy" cover. Those that take issue will ignore it, assuming it's as poor a joke as many others on the cover have been and buy it anyway].

Whether a presidential candidate can is another matter. Unless he gets called on this in a debate I can't see it mattering a jot, however.

Leading by example? Okay, so let's all become friends with unrepentant terrorists and racist America-hating clergy!

This guy is just a hypocrite and a complete asshole.

Dear Barack, go F yourself.

re: #8 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Obama should keep his remarks to his pay grade.

Pathetic little weasel turd.

Obama should keep his remarks to his gay parade!

He is saying that if America hadn't invaded Iraq, then Russia would not have invaded Georgia.

I couldn't help it. America made me do it!

"we" = "his supporters"

Obama is advisising Hillary that bombing Chinese emassies is not a smart choice.

Why is this news to Republicans?

The visit to Belgrade on April 18-21, 1999 [two weeks before the embassy bombing], by US Congressman Jim Saxton (Republican, New Jersey), under the auspices of the International Strategic Studies Association (ISSA), the publisher of this journal, was therefore an important breakthrough in attempting to wrest control of the strategic agenda from the Clinton march toward Armageddon. Not surprisingly, Congr. Saxton returned to Washington to face outright hostility from the Clinton Administration and skepticism from the media and some other members of Congress, all well-steeped in the propaganda version of the conflict.

At first, a curious media besieged Rep. Saxton, requesting that he speak on CNN's Larry King Live, and other prime time network television news shows. But, following a 45-minute telephone harangue of the Congressman by Secretary of State Albright, State Department pressure ensured that the networks withdrew their invitations for the Congressman to speak. Few in the Washington media want to jeopardize their access to the White House or State Department.

Those Democrats drawing a Georgia-Iraq parallel should better be reading the Pravda where the Russians themselves insist on a Georgia-Serbia parallel, making no mentioning of Iraq.

Hardly a day goes by without some idiotic, anti-American rant from this asshat.

He and his leftist mob refuse to recognize the difference between overthrowing a mad dictator (Saddam), bent on regional domination and a mad dictator (Putin) bent on regional domination overthrowing a free and peaceful democracy (Georgia).
