You won't hear Obama's gaffe on the news tonight (or ever). They're too busy playing the McCain "I don't know how many damn houses my wife has" clip over and over and over.

Good night all.

"But what do we mean by the American Revolution? Do we mean the American war? The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people; a change in their religious sentiments, of their duties and obligations...This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people was the real American Revolution."

Is it me, or is BO getting just as difficult to listen to as Bush? He's never been a great speaker, but Bush is a genuine guy. BO, OTOH, seems like he has just as tough a time without a speech or a plan.

Howdy All !

For the latest on Obama!

From "An American Expat in Southeast Asia"

"...For the advocates of this perverse militant egalitarianism, reasoned argument is replaced by a conditioned reflex as Obama's legions of lickspittle automatons mindlessly parrot as "evidence" whatever Obama himself has written in any one of his own self-serving books. You see this has never been about the free interchange of ideas or even the ascertainment of truth, this is all about entitlement and nothing not even freedom or liberty is going to get in the way...."

He comes off to me as somebody who thinks he is a vastly superior being having a temper tantrum. And he has been real busy attacking McCain instead of conveying his ideas.

Meanwhile, every time he opens his mouth he sticks both feet in it. Just in the last couple of days there has been the China comment and a comment that compares the Russian invasion of Georgia to the US invasion of Iraq. I hope the video makers get busy with those too.

I'm half seriously thinking of visiting Georgia for my next extended vacation. When one says 'former Soviet Republic', I almost immediately think of perpetually gloomy or smoggy weather and miles and miles of bland, featureless apartment blocks. While looking around for statistics about some of the places the Russians were threatening, I was surprised to see some narrow medival streets and these goregous 800-year old cathedrals with onion domes with a dramatic mountain backdrop (the mountain part didn't surprise me so much- it is the Caucausus after all)....

/ironically, I think Aeroflot is the only airline that provides quasi-direct service from the West to the Caucausus

re: #15 BigPapa

A whole week? Obama lately has been making a major gaffe at the rate of at least one per day. Got caught lying bout his Born Alive vote. (I am not going to label that as an "abortion" vote, because once a fetus is removed from the birth canal it is an infant rather than a fetus). He was foolish enough to attack John because John doesn't recall off the top of his head how many houses his wife owns.

And that is before anybody gets around to the two rather anti-American comments about the vast superiority of China and the moral equivalence of Russia that I noted above.

re: #3 Neo Con since 9-11

I love sake but it gives me the worst hangover

Back in my youth several friends and I used to patronize a local Japanese restaurant. One evening after consuming a particularly large quantity of warm sake we paid our tab and left. The next time we came in to the place we were treated like members of the Royal Family: formal greeting from the owner, our own private room, waiters bowing all over the place, and of course lots more sake. We couldn't figure out what the hell was going on until we analyzed our last visit and determined that, between the three of us, we had (in a sake induced fog) left about a $150 TIP!

Moral of the story, as "Ahnuld" would say: "you should not drink and tip".

Fortunately that was in my youth, when I had that elusive thing called "disposable income", would never happen today....

re: #18 galloping granny

Bush's worst gaffes seem to by idiosyncratic mannerisms: 'suiciders,' et al.
Sorta funny, just the way he is.

BHO, OTOH, has all kinds of complexity and nuance in his gaffes, in addition to being factually wrong or intellectually weak. You're right, if that's what your saying... there's no comparison.

But on a basic level, after all the talk about what a great speaker BHO is, he's not been speaking that well lately. It's been, it's been, getting, ... ya know... it's been worse.... ah ... ah.. worse than it's .. .it's been... since before.

I think it can be said that BHO doesn't really seem so be such a great speaker any more, not much better than Bush. It think that's a fair assessment. Of course it's unfair, maybe incendiary, to say or imply, to the, like, ya know... ah... wrong person... ya know.

I seem to be in a minority, but I thought Wyatt Earp was a better movie than Tombstone, though both very good. Maybe I drink too much sake :)

I was on the subway in Seoul about 10 years ago...it was late on a Friday night and it was pretty crowded. I was about ready to sit down next to a drowsy-looking guy when a bunch of riders started yelling something at me in Korean. I wasn't sure what they were trying to say, but I hesitated long enough to see the pool of vomit on the seat next to the intoxicated man who could hardly keep his balance while sitting down. This drill was repeated whever another passenger would board and hastily try to sit down next to the quasi-passed out guy, with me shouting out in english "You don't wanna do that!"

I think it comes down to style of movie. Wyatt Earp was made like Dances With Wolves, one of my favs.

I don't think Bush was a bad speaker, but he gets some lumps from time to time. He definitely has his mannerisms and idiosyncracies. I've seem him speak well, sometimes not so well. I think it's clear the BHO isn't the great communicator that he was all cracked up to be.... and that Bush can hold his own to him, not that they're running against each other. Just the thought of posturing that Bush is as good a communicator as BHO, with the ensuing frothing, it brings a snicker or two.

As for sushi... I live and work within site of the ocean. I eat more raw fish than cooked fish......

And at least a few of his more publicized gaffes were more figments of the MSM's imagination than real gaffes. I often wonder how the rest of the world might have felt about Bush and the USA if the media had just tried to remain neutral, rather than screaming at the top of their collective lungs that our president was an idiot...

i was "encouraged" as a child to emulate my parents love of all seafood. (read forced to eat it repeatedly, even after trying & not liking it)

as an adult, recognizing the source of my aversion, i have tried many different kinds of dishes, in many locales......

the result? fish is either so bland that i'm wasting calories, or it tastes like fish, which is nowhere as appealing as a good rare hunk of beef, or juicy pork chop or some fine BBQ...... so why bother?

if i'm ever stuck on a raft or an island, and that's all there is, i'm not going to starve myself, but until then, i'll make other choices. not liking it though doesn't keep me from being able to cook it well. %-)

Living with humans has taught dogs morals, say scientists

Dogs are becoming more intelligent and are even learning morals from human contact, scientists claim.

They say the fact that dogs' play rarely escalates into a fight shows the animals abide by social rules.

During one study, dogs which held up a paw were rewarded with a food treat.

When a lone dog was asked to raise its paw but received no treat, the researchers found it begged for up to 30 minutes.

But when they tested two dogs together but rewarded only one, the dog which missed out soon stopped playing the game.

Dr Friederike Range, of the University of Vienna, who led the study, said: 'Dogs show a strong aversion to inequity. I would prefer not to call it a sense of fairness, but others might.'

I'm sure as hell not a Russia or Aeroflot defender. But Aeroflot actually has a real good safety record. Their in-flight service is said to be great. It is probably due to the fact that a lot of their flyers are business types. What I wouldn't fly on , is any internal Russian carrier. The plane would probably be some converted surplus bomber with seats bolted to the floor and the guy sitting next to you would be traveling with a bunch of caged chickens he intended to sell in the big city.

Hmmmmm.

Overall production remains far below capacity. Last year, Russia manufactured just 26 civilian aircraft. For comparison, Airbus and Boeing produced more than 250 each.

Yet the Russian Transport Ministry says at least half of the 2,500 passenger planes still in operation in Russia are obsolete and need to be replaced.

So I looked up this enigmatic "Saki" (Hector Hugh Munro) to see if I could dig a few more quotes of his. The following are attributed to him:

Great Socialist statesmen aren't made, they're still-born.

I always say beauty is only sin deep.

and perhaps more in the face of some Lizards:

He spends his life explaining from his pulpit that the glory of Christianity consists in the fact that though it is not true it has been found necessary to invent it.

No one can be an unbeliever nowadays. The Christian Apologists have left one nothing to disbelieve.

re: #88 chicagodudewhotrades

Appears so:

At the start of World War I, although 43 and officially over age, Munro joined the Royal Fusiliers regiment of the British Army as an ordinary soldier, refusing a commission. More than once he returned to the battlefield when officially still too sick or injured to fight. He was sheltering in a shell crater near Beaumont-Hamel, France in November 1916 when he was killed by a German sniper. His last words, according to several sources, were "Put that damned cigarette out!"[citation needed] After his death, his sister Ethel destroyed most of his papers and wrote her own account of their childhood.

Oh, and his quote:

A little inaccuracy sometimes saves a ton of explanation.

... perhaps is made a bit clearer by this (from the Wiki biography):

Munro never married. Munro biographer A. J. Langguth cites evidence for the hypothesis that Munro was homosexual. Sexual activity between men was a crime, and the Cleveland Street scandal in 1889, followed by the downfall and disgrace of Oscar Wilde, convicted in 1895 after cause celebre trials, meant that "that side of [Munro's] life had to be secret".

Who's up for some Six Degrees of Seperation, Lightbringer edition?

I'll go first.

Waverly Brown- Nyack, N.Y. Police officer who was murdered by Black Sepratists and Weather Underground members in 1981 after they robbed a Brinks armoured truck in Nyack.

Kathy Boudin- Getaway Driver for the aforementioned Brinks Robbery, which killed Brinks guard Peter Paige. She was driving a U-Haul when she was stopped at a roadblock. Boudin managed to convice the four officers present she was alone and convinced them to holster their weapons before her accomplices jumped from the back of the van and opened fire with automatic weapons, wounding Officer Brown before he was shot execution-style. Sgt. Edward O'Grady would die from his wounds later that day.

Chesa Boudin- Kathy Boudin's infant son who was dropped off at a baby-sitter by both of Boudin's parents before the bloody robbery and shootout unfolded. With both his parents convicted felons, he was eventually raised by another Weather Underground member. In 2002 he was awarded a Rhodes scholarship and was the subject of a New York Times article highlighting the difficulty of growing up with both parents in jail (no mention on how difficult it was for Paige, O'Grady or Brown's children on growing up without a father).

Bill Ayers- Chicago resident and Weather Underground member who raised Chesa Boudin. Also serves on the Woods Fund of Chicago with Barack Obama, who launched his political career in Ayers' upscale Hyde Park home.

Barack Obama....hmm...that's only four or five...

a quick good morning, Lizards!

This may have already been posted ([Link: www.powerlineblog.com...]

Today Obama equated Russia's invasion of Georgia with our toppling of Saddam Hussein:

Democrat Barack Obama scolded Russia again on Wednesday for invading another country’s sovereign territory while adding a new twist: the United States, he said, should set a better example on that front, too.

The Illinois senator’s opposition to the Iraq war, which his comment clearly referenced, is well known. But this was the first time the Democratic presidential candidate has made a comparison between the U.S. invasion of Iraq and Russia’s recent military activity in Georgia.

“We’ve got to send a clear message to Russia and unify our allies,” Obama told a crowd of supporters in Virginia. “They can’t charge into other countries. Of course it helps if we are leading by example on that point.”

So our "charging into" Iraq--with dozens of allies, supported by a U.N. resolution, as a last resort after six months of build-up and negotiations, to unseat one of the cruelest dictators of modern times who had twice invaded neighboring states, was in violation of more than a dozen U.N. resolutions and was responsible for the deaths of something like two million people, who was shooting at American aircraft and had tried to assassinate a former President of the United States, in Obama's childish mind, was just like Russia's "charging into" Georgia, which resembles Saddam's Iraq in no respect. And, of course, we invaded a horrifying charnel-house so as to establish a democracy, whereas Russia invaded a peaceful democracy that it wants to re-incorporate into its empire.

Is Obama an idiot? I don't think so, really. But one of the many problems with being a leftist is that it leads you to say lots of stupid things. Today, the Obama gaffe machine went into overdrive. By November, I suspect that most voters will have heard enough to know that Barack Obama is unqualified to be a middle-manager in a well-run company, let alone President of the United States.

As president of the Harvard Law Review and a law professor in Chicago, Senator Barack Obama refined his legal thinking, but left a scant paper trail. His name doesn't appear on any legal scholarship.

But an unsigned — and previously unattributed — 1990 article unearthed by Politico offers a glimpse at Obama's views on abortion policy and the law during his student days, and provides a rare addition to his body of work.

I think that Big Papa has it right in #12. The advantage that Republicans have had in presidential elections comes in a large part when they have nominated 'real people'. When Democrats nominate 'real people', they win. Billy Jeff, for all his faults, was a real person. Carter was real.

Dukacus (sp. So quickly we forget) was a fake. Al Gore is a fake. Kerry is fake. And Obama is fake. And an empty suit and a product of the Chicago Machine.

McCain for all his faults, and I'm not going to list them again, is a real person. You know what you're getting. You know how he's going to react. You know what his value system is. It's American. The old-fashioned kind.

I would say that sometimes a scarf is just a scarf. Some people may wear them having no idea what they represent. I don't see Rachel Ray as being someone who is trying to make a political statement. Kirsten Dunst either. Ashton Kutcher on the other hand might do it just to ruffle feathers.

re: #74 chicagodudewhotrades

I'm sure as hell not a Russia or Aeroflot defender. But Aeroflot actually has a real good safety record. Their in-flight service is said to be great. It is probably due to the fact that a lot of their flyers are business types. What I wouldn't fly on , is any internal Russian carrier. The plane would probably be some converted surplus bomber with seats bolted to the floor and the guy sitting next to you would be traveling with a bunch of caged chickens he intended to sell in the big city.

Well... Aeroflot was originally a transport unit of the Soviet Air Force that was masquerading as a civilian airline. All Soviet airliners were designed to drop paratroopers and perform transport missions in wartime.

Okay, I don't remember where I found the link, but here is one man's opinion on Why We Are Losing In Afghanistan.

Why we are losing Afghanistan
BY Herschel Smith
6 hours, 49 minutes ago

Completely aside from any political point or campaign (TCJ is conservative), and in spite of having lost readers and links because of our stand, The Captain’s Journal has made it clear for more than half a year that the security situation in Afghanistan is degrading. We have pointed out that many NATO troops operate under rules of engagement that prevent them from participating in any offensive operations, that NATO has no coherent strategy of engagement with and provision of security for the population, and that the Taliban, once restricted primarily to asymmetric operations, have been able to field hundreds of fighters in heavily conventional operations such as the battle of Wanat, in a raging battle that U.S. soldiers describe as pure chaos.

Now we've been told for quite a while that Iraq is a distraction from the 'real war' in Afghanistan. And in Afghanistan there are a wide variety of NATO troops operating under widely varying rules of engagement.

This guy doesn't think that it is working out.

How ironic would it be for Obama to get elected just in time to preside over the lose of Afghanistan?

I surprise myself with the number sometimes...

As long as there is no country music involved...you have a friend in me. Well, Charlie Daniels Band...I'll listen to that...and the Johnny Cash covers of Nine Inch Nails: Hurt, and Depeche Mode: Personal Jesus.

I am with you there. I have actually tried to listen to country music because I appreciate the patriotic aspect of a lot of it, but I just can't do it.

From over at Glenn Reynold's Joint...

MICKEY KAUS on Joe Biden:

There's a bit of C-SPAN tape that should surface quickly if he's named. ... Remember, it wasn't Biden's plagiarism that knocked him out of the 1988 race. It was "'I think I have a much higher I.Q. than you do''--a bizarre videotaped putdown that Biden immediately called into question with five (5) boasts about his academic record, four (4) of which turned out to be easily disproved B.S.

If this stuff wasn't so important, it'd make a great sitcom.

I was in Ukraine not long ago, Lviv specifically. For the first day or so I felt kind of sick to my stomach and depressed, because the city just looked so gray and old and run down. But eventually I fell in love with it. It was old and run down, but people LIVED in it. Rich and poor and middle class lived in close proximity. Ancient churches and modern discos and clubs, a world-class opera house, and an international university were within walking distance of each other. And the people were largely Westernized and appreciative of their freedom.

Alcohol is the first leading cause of auto accidents and is involved in nearly all cases of domestic violence. And we have a constitutional amendment that prevents it from being included.

Alcoholism is a disease. As such, people suffering from this disease are probably protected under the Americans With Disabilities Act, and therefore they cannot be made to pay more for their insurance than any other person.

Food and tobacco addictions have not been classified as diseases (yet). So it is perfectly OK to make them pay for the horrendous burdens they impose upon society.

Not at all. The ADA also covers perceived disabilities. Further, addiction is classified as a disease.

I strongly suspect that someone will challenge this in court in very short order, particularly on the BMI thing. This would be overt discrimination on the basis of perceived disability under the Americans With Disabilities Act. Not going to stand long.

Not sure about that. Not obesity on its own.

Conditions as a result of obesity (diabetes, joint problems, etc) may indeed be covered.

I need help with some computer stuff. I took video (with our Kodak camera) last night of TS Fay and now I can't edit or import the image or send it to anyone; they can't view it. When I downloaded from my camera, the videos were viewable on my computer and automatically opened with quicktime.
Is there some freeware I can download to change the file format so I can share the videos?

We had a hundred year old oak tree fall down and I have video right before and right after, but of course, when the tree fell the video camera was off. Actually even if it was running, all it would have shown was me cussing and running into the house as I climbed over my husband who couldn't get in the door fast enough. LOL.

In 1947
Palestinians were 67% of the population of Palestine, owned 92% of the
land in Palestine and yet the UN Partition plan gave Palestinians a
mere 43% of the land (much of which was not useful for cultivation,
read: livelihoods lost). 57% of the most cultivable land was given to

Tour of Tskhinvali undercuts Russian claim of genocide

TSKHINVALI, Georgia_ As Russian troops pounded through Georgia last week, the Kremlin and its allies repeatedly pointed to one justification above all others: The Georgian military had destroyed the city of Tskhinvali.

But a trip to the city on Sunday, without official escorts, revealed a very different picture. While it was clear there had been heavy fighting — missiles knocked holes in walls, and bombs tore away rooftops — almost all of the buildings seen in an afternoon driving around Tskhinvali were still standing.

Russian-backed leaders in South Ossetia have said that 2,100 people died in fighting in Tskhinvali and nearby villages. But a doctor at the city's main hospital, the only one open during the battles that began late on Aug. 7, said the facility recorded just 40 deaths.

Huh, it seems the Russians were lying after all! How about that?

Researchers for Human Rights Watch, an international advocacy group, had similar findings as McClatchy about casualty numbers in Tskhinvali. A doctor at the city's hospital told the group's researchers that 44 bodies were brought by and was "adamant" that they represented the majority of deaths there because the city's morgue was not functioning at the time.

"Obviously there's a discrepancy there, a big discrepancy," Rachel Denber, deputy director for Europe and Central Asia at Human Rights Watch, said about the apparently inflated casualty figures. "It's not clear to us at all where those numbers are coming from."

I'll give you a hint: it starts with "M" and ends with "oscow"

Gosh, that sounds terrible! What did the "Christian predator" Gen. Petraeus actually say?

Petraeus endorsed a new book by Army Chaplain (Lt. Col.) William McCoy, "Under Orders: A Spiritual Handbook for Military Personnel," saying, "it should be in every rucksack for those times when soldiers need spiritual energy."
