Veep Thread 1

Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 5:13:27 pm PDT

What the heck, we’re all waiting on tenterhooks for Barack Obama to announce his running mate (I know I can hardly stand the suspense), so here’s an open thread for predictions, venting, and persiflage.

P.S. You may notice I’ve rounded off the corners on a lot of our boxes and widgets, if you’re using Safari or Firefox. If you’re still on the Internet Explorer mainline, you’re stuck in Squaresville until Gates catches up with CSS 3.

UPDATE at 8/22/08 5:25:21 pm:

If you browse to a page at the official Obama site that doesn’t exist (for example, this one), you get a wonderful logo that could serve as the metaphor for Barack Obama’s whole foreign policy:

Notice that the magnifying glass is trained on the American flag part of Obama’s logo. Rich with symbolism.

UPDATE at 8/22/08 5:28:17 pm:

On Fox News, Laura Ingraham just announced that a private plane has landed in Delaware and there’s activity at the home of Joe Biden.

Is the plane already on its way? Steve Clemons of the New America Foundation and the Washington Note reports that a key Biden staffer has cut short his family vacation in Hawaii to return to D.C.:

Biden has a few people he's had around forever and some new additions to his insider crowd. Three of the best -- though there are more I won't mention -- are Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chief of Staff Antony Blinken, Senate Foreign Relations General Counsel Brian McKeon, and Senate Office Chief of Staff and former Biden presidential campaign director Luis Navarro.

Working Mother magazine -- the journal of record for juggling moms -- just commended Joe Biden and his staff with its "Best of Congress Award". And along with Biden's "family friendly" disposition with his office staff, he said "get out of here" to Foreign Relations Committee Chief of Staff Tony Blinken who went off to Hawaii to vacation with his family.

Blinken enjoyed the surf and sun for about two days -- and then guess what, he's back in D.C. I know that he would not be thrilled by my reporting this.

And some in the Foreign Relations Committee office in the Senate have said that I should not read anything in to his being back in Washington.

Right. . .

NObama!

29 rightymouse  Fri, Aug 22, 2008 5:21:52pm

If Obama was smart (which he isn't), he should go with Sibelius to stave off the frothing Shrillery feminists at the Dem convention. Then we'd find out if they were really feminists or not.

From my point of view, Senator Joe Biden is an inspiring, experienced, over-the-top smart, fast-running boss who is a handful. He wrestles with ideas. He wrestles with his team. They knock him back. If it's a Bayh-genre VP, the tailspin that began a few weeks ago will simply continue and accelerate, perhaps with a short Convention reprise (perhaps; if the Lefy freaks don't pull a feces festival.

Obama is either a moron, or a socialist moron; his latest disgrace is lauding the ChiComs for being "vastly" more advanced than us in infrastructure.

I am sure he would do anything to get to ride on Air Force One as Prez and the first black Prez meaning instant top-ten list of historic presidents. If he thought picking Hillary would get him there, he might do it.

re: #206 tokyobk

Yes, and he does provide experience and knowledge and also would show that Obama is not a fraid to have someone with experience next to him.

It would be a good choice for Obama.

I don't agree. I think that Biden was the least offensive of all the Democratic candidates for President (a more pathetic endorsement I could not make). But he's a lousy choice for Vice President. Like Obama, he's a legislator, not an executive. Like Obama, he's a man, not a woman (hell hath no fury etc.). He needs to follow through with the narrative of his candidacy: change (i.e. choose a running mate other than an old, white male).

Biden has been in office since 1973. How does he fit the fairy tale of "Change"?

And they can't claim that it brings experience, because with Obama, they're saying expereince isn't necessary.

What am I saying? Of course they can contradict themselves and boldly have a double standard:

McCain = old = bad,
but Biden = old = experience = good.

Report from the other side I

Before I left work today, I asked a co-worker, a real Daily-Kos-reading moonbat, if he had given his cell phone number to be notified when the 0 picks is VP candidate. He, of course, had. No news yet.
Anyway, this got him talking about McCain's "gaffes", and another moonbat joined in.
I couldn't hang around, or my brain would implode, but here are some observations:
One, they don't believe the polls, and think 0bama is doing better than shown.
Second, they think debates will actually help their candidate. No comment on the forum last weekend. Or maybe not, because they went on how if debates really made a difference, Kerry would have won, because he did better than Bush. I really wonder what planet they're from, but given they have or had rock bands, I wonder how much the drugs did to them.

Anyway, they don't seem to realize that I think 0 is a danger to the country and shouldn't be in office at all, so they kept talking and said more than I wanted to hear. My ability to not scream at them was limited, and it was late, so I left to save my sanity.

However, over the next few months, I'll give further reports, but not so many that I risk my sanity. I hope to have a final report on how moonbats deal with the McCain landslide, including the sound exploding moonbat heads makes.

If it is a Messiah/Judith ticket, McCain gets slaughtered unless he appoints Palin as his Veep in hopes of canceling out the woman vote and getting the base.

The moonbats at work think the announcement was delayed to give 0bama more time to talk about McCain not knowing how many houses he has. Seems not that likely. I wonder if the potential VPs are deserting the 0bamatitanic now that it is sinking in the polls.

Biden is so "retro". Everytime I watch/listen to him speak I'm reminded of the Austin Powers movie.
Except Joe is so..."70's". And he has the demeanor of one the "Saturday Night Live" crowd used to love to goof on ! Seems like an odd pick - like picking ones uncle for the "gravitas" angle - "OK, I'm young and inexperienced but my uncle Joe will be right here with me in case I make a mistake".
Anybody check to see how this is going over with the petruli oil and sandals crowd ?

Biden? I was watching his YouTube debate videos. On the surface, he's good, but there's buffoonery under the surface.

I think a Biden pick promotes Romney; with Bayh, Pawlenty's blandness wouldn't be as glaring.

Some goes for HRC: Pawlenty just doesn't have the gravitas of Romney.

XII Amendment
.... . But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

XXII Amendment
Section 1
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. ....

XXV Amendment
Section 1
In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.

Section 2
Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress
....

As I read this it is possible to be elected Vice President an infinite number of times but only serve as President for a Maximum of 10-12 years. So two things seem to be true.
1. Obama can serve for up to 10 years or more as he stated he would, if he is elected twice and then his succesor's VP dies in office and Obama gets selected by the new President and Congress after which the President who nominated him resigns. This is the Putin conspiracy fantasy and I want book , TV and movie rights.
2. Jimmy Carter can be elected Vice President.

katemaclaren, I disagree. I think the people superficial enough to dig Obama will view Biden as having gravitas; even if it's oldster gravitas; it will also reassure some HRC people; it's not going to get many current Obama supporters to flee for McCain; it might suppress voter turnout amongst the Dems, but overall, not a pick worse than anyone other than HRC.

Will Biden attract many people now leaning towards McCain? No, because he's still just the VP

Separately, I think one strategy will be to use Biden's experience to highlight Obama's inexperience.

Chet Edwards:

* Supported allowing the assault weapons ban to expire in 2004.

* Opposes federal firearm owner licensing and registration.

* Supports barring civil liability against firearm manufacturers and dealers.

* Believes background checks at gun shows should be timely and protect the privacy of gun buyers and vendors.

* Supports Right-to-Carry reciprocity legislation.

* Supports independent evaluation of universal ballistic testing programs.

* Opposes banning ammunition magazines.

* Opposes new waiting periods for handguns.

* Believes no records should be maintained on any lawful gun buyer.

* Supports restoration of Second Amendment rights for the District of Columbia.

Chet believes our nation's first priority is to secure our borders and to protect our homeland and he strongly opposes amnesty in any form. While others have talked about securing our borders, Chet has done something about it.

* Chet helped write the law that added 1500 additional border patrol agents and has supported legislation that would add 6000 more, to better police our borders and stop the influx of illegal immigration.

* Chet secured $16 million for Waco's L-3 to build P-3 aircraft, a surveillance tool for securing our borders, catching drug smugglers and stopping illegal immigration.

Oh yeah? Take this:

Rice will travel to Israel and the Palestinian territories on Sunday, a statement by State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

"There, she will meet with senior Israeli and Palestinian Authority officials to discuss a wide range of bilateral and regional issues," he said.

These would include "ongoing efforts to create positive and lasting peace in the region and progress towards the shared goal of a peace agreement in 2008," McCormack said.

He provided no details of her schedule or meetings, and did not say how long Rice would remain in the region.

The United States has said it hopes to conclude a framework peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians before President George W. Bush leaves office in January. But the talks have stumbled on disputes over Israeli settlement building and the future of Jerusalem.

Chet IS a real democrat though.

# Chet has voted to strip big oil companies of certain tax breaks and subsidies, because he believes that it is wrong, during a time of war, for big oil companies to post record profits while charging consumers over $3.70 a gallon for gas.

# Chet voted to halt deposits of oil into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) for the remainder of the year and supports the releasing of oil from the SPR to increase supply on the open market and further help reduce rising gas prices. Chet believes doing so would demonstrate a U.S. commitment to reduce speculation in the oil market which, some energy experts have said accounts for as much as 20-30% of rising gasoline costs.

# Chet supported the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which increased fuel mileage to 35 miles per gallon by 2020, the first increase in mileage standards since 1975, and provided $21 billion in tax incentives to increase production of domestic renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar energy.

re: #629 lifeofthemind

Israeli Arabs are citizens of Israel. They can be Moslem, Christian or Druze. Palestinians are stateless persons, either former citizens of Jordan and their descendants or persons registered as refugees by UNRWA and their descendants or inhabitants of Gaza when the Mandate ended (who were not given Egyptian citizenship) and their descendants.

So, "Palestinians" are either Jordanians, Egyptians or persons registered as refugees by UNRWA (which includes people who had migrated to Israel - whether Arab, Kurd, Bosnian, Algerian or otherwise - a couple of years before Israel became a state). Got it.

Uh, no. The point of the text message was to get their phone numbers. It's incredibly easy to do mass communication that way - people will feel like they're in the loop (as they're hit up for donations) and statistics show that people who are sent reminders of the election a day or so before are much more likely to vote. re: #722 OldLineTexan

Now that's just mean.

I think McCain is playing his stength and letting Obama play his weakness. Obama is living a dream running for president and all he wants to do is keep in the news. The MSM is feeding this, but it perhaps will play against him as we learn more and more and as we get more and more bored by the antics. By the time he texts the VP message, we will all know its Biden. Boring.

But, if he comes out with a true suprise (that isn't Kermit the Frog) it will be a huge win for him.

As others have mentioned, however, I don't think the Secret Service messes around so if they are with Biden, its over.

Hillary got whacked hard. Apparently she learned of her irrelevance through friends not even from Obama himself.

Now that's just mean.

If it is Al Gore, than even the biggest Obama haters are going to have to admit he has fierce media skills.

But it makes sense with change and going back to the place we were when Al Gore "won" as he did in many Democrat minds and it would be like," lets reset the clock and do everything over without that mistake Bush."

It would be a bounce for Obama but otherwise nauseating.

Rising Sun: Sean Connery, " You beat the grass to drive the snakes"!

So, has Mac been driving BHO to Biden with his 2-3 weeks of humors ads selling "no experience/skill to serve as POTUS vis a vis foreign policy, vapid & empty "Hollywerid Celeb" that have the snakes so rattled at the poll numbers that the DNC brainless trust took the bait and picked Biden to shore up the glaring weakness here, or, is there some more intrigue about to unfold?
BHO is so "crafty!"

When my Blackberry buzzes, I'll know fo sure.

Bigger intrigue is why, if so, dose Mac want Biden as the Demwitted Veep? He's looking mo & mo clever, as the "old, hapless guy!"

Stay tuned, if Cohei is correct - film at 11. If Hillery is passed over - Obama is burnt toast on 11/4/08! Will Oberman's head explode live on TV after BHO get all 3 District of Columbia electorial votes as his total?

Off buying Orville Redenbacher stock prior to DEM meltdown in Denver - a must C TV event! My son will be capturing all the pix/vidoe he can as a "Zombie" stand in there! Stay cool Alex!

Whatever you do Mac, keep those funny TV jabs a'coming! The Polls say, "yea ya right!"

Biden My Time

Well, early in the mornin'

'Til late at night,

I got poison poll results,

I'm too left to be right.

I'm Biden my time with you,

Hopin' you'll come through, too.

Won't you come with me, Biden?

I'll take you where you wanna go.

And if it don't work out,

I'll be the first to know.

I'm Biden my time with you,

Well, they sent for the voters

In fact, one has to wonder whether Obama really had made up his mind, or whether his first or even second choice didn’t turn him down. That would explain the delays in the announcement, and the apparent disorganization of Team Obama in handling an event that should have underscored the seriousness of their candidate. After all, they set the expectation that the running mate announcement would come this week, and they missed their own target.

I agree, I think all of the possible choices have set back and watched the train run out of coal and decided real quick that this race was not going to make it to the station. I think he had at least two others on the list who told him no.

I will say that Biden has a great story of survival and his personal loss will make Elizabeth Edwards look like a cheap amateur. There will be a fair amount of sympathy vote he can pull. He is not all together an idiot and only recently has he started being a total leftie on a consistent basis. He does have a long voting record that has some meat to it.

Beckel goes "Well, there's only so long you can run with a comment, you guys have had that one for what, seven months?"

Amazing how just earlier in his interview with Shep, he talked about how Biden would mop the floor with Romney because of all the stuff Romney has "accumulated' in the past year.

What a joke.

re: #815 TheMole

I want Biden I want Biden I want Biden. Find the video clip where he tells a witness at a Senate hearing "that's above your pay grade". Replay his early career as the Senator from MBNA. Get out the old pictures that showed the fresh hairplugs. And reflect on the tragic consequences when the holes are drilled too deep.

Excellent, Obama copied the pay grade line from a plagiarist fantasist who also does not have the military background that would justify using such terminology.

P.S. You may notice I’ve rounded off the corners on a lot of our boxes and widgets, if you’re using Safari or Firefox. If you’re still on the Internet Explorer mainline, you’re stuck in Squaresville until Gates catches up with CSS 3.

Any idea why Opera 9.52 - which is even more CSS 3 compliant than Firefox - also seems stuck is Squaresville?

Pauvre Petit! Try typing w/ this Yellow Tail excuse for merlot. I am jealous.

But, hey, making blog history to The ONE'S over-the-top promo-ed text VEEP message screw-up is so good, I'd do it w/ a Barq's rootbeer. At least I got a hot version of Luis Miguel's Ahora te Puedes on Youtube to help me on! Nothing like a Spanish version of our 60's top 40 bubblegum to hit the spot. Got a real hot sax rift on it though. And BHO would approve of my appreciation of Spanish vibes.

2008 Democratic Ticket

Obama (Patrick) - Biden (Kinnock) 08!

Does life get any better than this? I submit that it does not!

I'm plagiarizing this one! LOL!

Okay. So it's Obama bin Biden. Well, it does have kind of a beat and you can maybe dance to it if you're drunk enough.

With all the ID threads lately, I've been having some theological thoughts. Selecting logorrheic Biden, pompatus of imbecility, proves that, whether or not God exists, at least She has a sense of humor and is either a Republican of Libertarian.

I'm going to send the Guinness Book of World Records a videotape of Biden's first interview on Charlie Rose's show. That'll be at least an hour of watching two pituitary glands pump out overwhelming masses of self regard hormones in the midst of the most lavish tongue bath you will ever see (until Chrissy interviews the Big O).

825 mannyishere  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 12:59:34am

It's slow Joe Biden people!

Party time! Bring out the problematic Biden quotes!

828 hilljack  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 2:11:42am

If defeating Biden doesn't light a fire beneath the conservative base's collective asses then nothing will.

829 canadianconservative  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 4:42:01am

Rush Limbaugh got his wish and he'll ahev a field day. The fact that HRC was not even vetted was the ultimate insult to the PUMAs and with his already precarious problem with women (most of whom like real men, and not metrosexuals), where he only has a 2% lead, when normally Dems lead with women by double digits, Obambi is toast.

As for the GOP, the Veep selection I am far more interested in, I would be very happy with Romney, but if McCain goes with THIS person as running mate, I believe we will see a national landslide for the GOP.

I've never been so happy to have been SO completely WRONG!

No Hillary! YEAH!

re: #757 Cicero05

At this very moment, Biden is trying to decide whose life story he's going to steal for his convention speech.

oho

832 barry the baptist  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 7:15:29am

Obama at press coference announcing Biden (no teleprompter): 'I, uh, want to thank you, uh, you know, for coming tonight, you know? Uh, I've chosen, or am going, to uh, choose as my VP in this, uh, race....uh, uh-huh? Oh, right. Bob Bi- er, uh, uh, JOE, JOE Biden the congressman from Delware.'

Biden repsonse: 'Thanks Barry. I am smarter than you, John McCain, God, Stephen Hawking, Dick Cheney-he's an asshole! And, Rudy Guliani amongst others. I can't wait to start in this campaign b/c you need some on the job training now. Thanks, again.'

McCain / Farve then he gets New York and Wisconsin

834 Alan K. Henderson  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 7:44:44am

If Obama were smart, he would have gone with Edwards - not John or Chet, but Elizabeth.

I'm not a fan of this rounded corner look.
