When Nerds Collide

CERN’s Large Hadron Collider will be firing up soon, hopefully not destroying the fabric of space and time, and the CERN gang is bustin’ some rhymes, cuz it’s party time.

Illegal Immigrants Returning to Mexico in Record Numbers.
DALLAS — Illegal immigrants are returning home to Mexico in numbers not seen for decades — and the Mexican government may have to deal with a crush on its social services and lower wages once the immigrants arrive.
The Mexican Consulate's office in Dallas is seeing increasing numbers of Mexican nationals requesting paperwork to go home for good, especially parents who want to know what documentation they'll need to enroll their children in Mexican schools.
"Those numbers have increased percentage-wise tremendously," said Enrique Hubbard, the Mexican consul general in Dallas. "In fact, it's almost 100 percent more this year than it was the previous two years."
The illegal immigrant population in the U.S. has dropped 11 percent since August of last year, according to the Center for Immigration Studies. Its research shows 1.3 million illegal immigrants have returned to their home countries.
Some say illegal immigrants are leaving because a soft economy has led to fewer jobs, causing many laborers to seek work elsewhere.
Others argue that a tough stance on immigration through law enforcement has spread fear throughout the illegal population.

Check the link I gave above to CERN. The energy level of the LHC will be enough to find the Higgs if it has a mass within theoretical limits. They should also be able to detect super-symmetric particles. Most versions of String Theory are based on scales still to small to detect with the LHC, but some some aspects of string theory might be accessible.

I'm thinking that the only reason it has been dragged out this long is because he has been turned down once or twice. Think about it here. He was apparently going to announce while he was on vaca. Didn't happen. He has been going downhill fairly steadily and has had a couple of really bad weeks now. He is barely tied with McCain - even though Obama is outspending McCain 10:1. If you were a Kaine or a Bayh with aspirations to the national stage, would you want to tie yourself to Obama?

If by enlighten you mean get folks worried that Obama is out of his league and clueless and yet has managed to bamboozle so many people simply by being able to say - hey I'm a Democrat and not named Clinton so there's hope and change for us yet, then, yes, he has enlightened.
The problem is, Obama doesn't sound enlightened the moment he goes off script.

I am not surprised at all. Obama doesn't really have much experience running for office or handling the press. He has never once had a real opponent. His style is to move heaven and earth to get them thrown off the ballot rather than actually engage. John McCain was practically born knowing how to play the game. If you don't think being a military officer isn't every bit as much playing politics as being an elected official is, think again. McCain isn't even trying hard yet. He doesn't have to because Obama keeps handing him desert on a plate.

Laugh it up chuckle heads, it going to be real funny when the generates a black hole and it sucks earth in!
/
The sober, spoil-the-party version of his point is this:
If the kind of energy CERN plays with could create black holes that would suck in the earth, how come cosmic rays, which are far more energetic, haven't already slagged the moon? A cosmic ray strikes it, with heap big energy compared to CERN...daily, even hourly. And never does the moon just collapse in upon itself into a black hole, showering out some spare change of energy, oh, say, more in a few seconds than the sun generates in a million years.
Not only does this not happen to our own moon. It doesn't happen anywhere in this galaxy, because if it did, it would be a spectacular fireworks show and we'd see it. And anyhow, all those fireworks shows would have happened long since, and there really wouldn't be anything left of anything. Just black holes spinning in the orbits where stars used to be.
The sky won't fall. Some doomsayers will have their souffles deflated, and life will go on.

Not at all. The Canadian and US govt have limited the amount of water going over Niagara to preserve it as much as possible - plus the water diverted goes to power production. They reduce the waterflow even more at night, storing it up in reservoirs nearby for release during the day into their power generation systems.
It's still a sight to behold, but not nearly as wild as it was 100 or even 50 years ago.

*Shudders*
My Hope is that Obama picks Biden. Next to Kerry, it's the worst choice he could make. I was really scared he'd pick Clinton (and become unbeatable), Caroline Kennedy, Governor Sibelius, or Bayh (who struck me as fairly impressive for a Dem when I lived in Indiana).
Biden? BIDEN? He's making it too easy.

Not fair. Science has its place also in life. There is work to be done other than fighting. In fact, the Soviet Union spun into economic and cultural collapse because they forgot that fact. Before them, also, Sparta.
Nothing wrong with expecting our best and brightest to step up and do a tour before entering the career that gives them the rewards they can earn. A military with a broad citizen base that uses our finest minds is what we need in these times. We are in a war. Do not want a narrow Spartiate military cast. The 5% who choose that career will be honored for it. More need to do 3-5 years.

Jury rules Duncan eligible for death penalty
BOISE - After deliberating for about two hours, jurors in Boise decided Friday that Joseph Edward Duncan III is eligible for the death penalty for the 2005 abduction, torture and murder of 9-year-old Dylan Groene.
Just so you know this human excrement (and that's insulting to excrement) has plead guilty. He raped and gutted Dylan, let him suffer then bashed his head apart. Too bad drawing and quartering are cruel and unusual punishment.

I wanted to address the point brought up in this link here.
As I replied, the thing people forget when talking about American technological infrastructure is how low our nation's population density is. Look at this map, and think of the nations our infrastructure keeps being compared to. And remember that in nations like Canada and Australia, the population is mostly concentrated in a small part of the actual land mass of the country. Think also of American cities in comparison with other major cities around the world when it comes to the relationship of population and square mileage.
Adequate bandwidth for a thing, be it broadband internet service, cellular service, Blackberry, or what-have-you comes from having adequate hardware to provide that bandwidth. In order to provide adequate bandwidth for a metropolitan area in the US, it can be a whole lot more expensive, as you will need to cover a wider area, and with fewer customers per box to offset your costs. Tech companies tend to wait until the customer-per-invested-infrastructure ratio gets better to expand beyond the largest cities, and Americans who don't live in the larger cities are used to muddling by with earlier technology.

Have been off line for about three/four weeks and have been pretty much not pay attention to all news. I was at home today and had the TV on in the back ground and was working on the computer. Local news (Houston, TX) was a story about a object that was found on the rail tracks (I think in Washington State). They showed a picture of it - it looked like a propane tank (one you would use with you back yard barbeque pit) with wires coming out of it. The guy that found it worked for the railroad, picked it up and carried it to his “base” and notified the management and it turned out to be a bomb. The then said that they suspected that is was not “planted” but may have fallen off the train.
Since I heard this story (about noon central US time today) I have not heard anything more about it. Attempted a google search after telling my husband about it tonight and did not find anything.
Again, this may have already been discussed here – I did search and did not find anything.

When we dedicate time to seeking vengance, plot, plan and perform, we are forever changed, and not for the better. Better to give it to GOD, and trust his judgement as to what they deserve.
We could punish him for all we are worth, and still not be sated. Best to give him a quick death. Scum like that are dead inside. They will not in most cases turn to Jesus, and so find the justice we can never give them.

I shot 180gr in my .41 Mag. A Ruger Blackhawk, IIRC. The same in my Taurus .40.
The magnum round has a lot more case/powder/pressure. I don't have my reloading manuals here, so that's all I have.
180 grains is authoritative! I like the .45 but it is heavy and I feel my 9 MM is to light. Just interested in the best round to do the job.

A Swiss collidor.
Soviets got a shipment of Swiss cheese, inspecting Commissar sent it back as defective capitalist trick, it was full of holes.
after months of deliberation and fierce lobbying from interested advocacy groups, after determined research and debate and consternation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (search ) finally issued its much-anticipated ruling:Henceforth, the majority of the holes in every slice of Grade A Swiss cheese (search ) sold in America would need to be between 3/8 and 13/16 of an inch in diameter. This represented a sea change from the previous guidelines, which set Swiss cheese holes parameters at 11/16 of an inch to 13/16 of an inch.
Also, “the cheese shall be properly set and shall possess well-developed round oval-shaped eyes which are uniformly distributed.” Since 1953, the USDA has had a Swiss cheese team of overseers, and employs a team of Swiss cheese graders, who evaluate the holes in your cheese using 22 different classifications, including “cabbage, collapsed, dull, dead, frog mouth, gassy, nesty, one-sided, underset, or uneven.”
I hope that cheese was regulation.

There was a significant US contribution to the LHC and the various detectors involved. Many fine US scientists & engineers have worked on this project, and hundreds of millions of US taxpayer dollars have been invested.
Over several years of building (components for) specific experiments... and funding salaries, etc.... the US will spend several millions of dollars... yes, that is true. However, compared to doing it by ourselves (SSC) or the overall LHC budget (and funding CERN), the US contribution to the LHC is small. I guess that was my point - we saved money by doing it this way.... millions compared to billions.

I've found the .40 is nice in between round, handles like a hot 9mm, but with the higher velocity terminal ballistics are close to a .45.
.45 has slower powder and lower pressures which translates to longer brass life if you reload, and longer barrel life.
In the sub-compact size I get 10 rd mags with the .40 vs. 7 with a .45.

A .45 is designed around 230gr ball, but modern ones are slicked up. I have shot the 210gr "flying ashtray" round in my Kimber, and it worked well.

Yes, but the SSC would have operated at a much higher power than the LHC and would have placed the US at the forefront of physics for generations to come. The industrial & scientific spin-offs would have been enormouse and well worth the investment. It was a terrible loss and a short sighted decision.

Everyone is busy trying to game things out and figure out who the VP nominee is. Whoever it is will be seen as a disappointment after all the hype and nonsense unless it turns out to be Hillary. Even then, you might still get folks asking the question I've been positing for a while - why is the more experienced person at the bottom of the ticket instead of at the top?
Obama has to pick someone who will not upstage him, but who lends gravitas. That narrows things down significantly, and leaves you with a bunch of Senators who are also-rans in the usual vanity campaigns they've run in the past, or someone from the business world that we haven't even considered.
Most people think he's going to choose a politician. That's probably the safe bet. However, he might try to go outside the box and pick some business guy - a Bill Gates type for example...

Clinton said the US electorate didn't want to spend the money. That's a different thing. Clinton was a follower, never a leader. Everything he did was for short-sighted gain at the expense of long term benefit.
I'm sure the US spent much more on CERN than Canada has. There are in fact several concurrent projects: the LHC upgrade, the major detectors, ATLAS & CMS, and a few other minor experiments. Canada contributed only to ATLAS. The US contributed to all of the projects.

I mean, seriously, 0bambi is going to go with exactly the fellow who labelled him clean and articulate? Who wanted to divide Iraq into three separate countries (well, so did I, for a while there)? Among Liberals, PET is considered a God, a cross between a Kennedy, a philosopher king and a rock star. Pierre was certainly a complex character. Very smart, arrogant, and self assured. In my opinion, he did a few good things (repatriating the constitution, screwing the FLQ and stopping the PQ) but he far outlived his good ideas. He also oversaw a vast expansion of government programmes. He seemed to relish pissing off people, like the time he gave the finger to some protesters in BC (they never liked him out west).
At his funeral, his official pal bearers were Jimmy Carter, Fidel Castro, the Aga Khan and Leonard Cohen. Go figure. He remains an enigma.

Yes. After the FLQ kidnapped and murdered a British diplomat & a couple of Quebec gov't ministers, Trudeau declared martial law in Quebec. When asked how far was he prepared to go, he answered,"Just watch me." The RCMP rounded up all the suspects, and hundreds of other separatist sympathizers. The civil rights types whined and cried, but the general public overwhelmingly supported Trudeau's tough response. The FLQ was finished.

There was a part-Filipino on the US Women's Medley Swimming team back in Athens. Grandma was from the provinces (our version of "countryside").
Still, one thing I notice is that they keep sending pretty much the same people every year, even in boxing. =_= We also rely on "half-breeds" a lot (to pick a word, sorry for the connotation.) Apparently they keep saying it's a lack of money to the facilities and training, but when you notice the heads of the sports associations driving the same kinds of SUVs afforded to local Congressmen...you know something's wrong.
As for "the ball," our national obsession is basketball. Even if - and I admit - most of us hardly reach Yao Ming's navel when it comes to height.

No, Davy Crocket was save. At those low yields, in tens of tons yield, the blast damage is a breeze and ionizing radiation and radiant heat doesn't extend past the blast damage. If you are close enough to get a lethal dose, you are more likely killed by the over-pressure wave.

John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were walking down a Washington DC street when they came upon a homeless man.
John McCain, gave the man his business card and told him to come to his office for a job. He then took out $20 out of his pocket and gave it to the man.
Hillary was very impressed, so when they came upon another homeless person, she decided to help. She walked over to him and gave him directions to the welfare office. She then reached into John McCain’s pocket and got out a $20. She kept $15 for her administration fees and gave the homeless man $5.
When they came upon yet another homeless person, Barack told him to “have hope…change is coming…” and gave him nothing.

But seriously. Isn't it interesting that Caroline Kennedy, the last blood member of Camelot, has been working so much for Obama and the MSM has not reported on it at all?
This is a HUGE story.
(As is her lack in judgment of the candidate she's backing. Huge, that is.) Either she's willfully blind, or just stupid. Either way, it's sad.
Kennedy's don't marry for brains. This becomes more readily apparent with each successive generation.

A possible explanation. This is from the HotAir link I put in my previous comment:
This entire exercise in announcing a running mate for Barack Obama has provided one puzzlement after another. The campaign at first said that they would announce Obama’s selection in the week before the convention — a wise choice, given Obama’s steep drop in the polling and the limited amount of time between the Democratic convention and that of the GOP the following week. Obama had an opportunity to demonstrate his gravitas and wisdom with the most important decision he has to make in this race, and enjoy a media blackout of McCain’s suddenly powerful campaign.
Their first fumble came when Team Obama decided to gimmick the announcement by texting it to the world. As a campaign strategy, it resembled late-night advertising for dating services. It hardly lent any dignity to the Obama campaign, and made this critical decision into a cheap marketing strategy.
But even that looks wise next to the strangely delayed rollout — now at least day later than Team Obama led people to believe. Instead of gaining extra media attention, they have wound up burying the story on the weekend. The VP announcement will gain Obama little earned media, and most people will have other activities keeping them busy rather than paying much attention to the move. That makes perfect sense as a strategy — if Obama’s embarrassed about his pick.
In fact, one has to wonder whether Obama really had made up his mind, or whether his first or even second choice didn’t turn him down. That would explain the delays in the announcement, and the apparent disorganization of Team Obama in handling an event that should have underscored the seriousness of their candidate. After all, they set the expectation that the running mate announcement would come this week, and they missed their own target.
Not only has Obama turned this into a game show, he has also now built up expectations to the point where almost any selection would be a letdown. The two rumored picks, Joe Biden and Evan Bayh, do not scream excitement. They don’t have the kind of star status that would justify this kind of NFL Draft Day engineering. Only Hillary Clinton or Al Gore might approach that kind of celebrity. Hillary would be better announced at the convention than on a Saturday afternoon, and Gore has already done the VP gig for eight years.
Obama has made a mess out of this announcement, and blown a natural opportunity to demonstrate his leadership. He also has given John McCain a wide opening to handle his own running-mate announcement in a manner which will demonstrate the Gravitas Gap which has widened considerably this month between the two candidates.

Yeah - like I said on the other thread,
The point of the text message was to get their phone numbers. It's incredibly easy to do mass communication that way - people will feel like they're in the loop (as they're hit up for donations) and statistics show that people who are sent reminders of the election a day or so before are much more likely to vote. Besides, it's hip, it's young...

Mr. McCain was certainly not my first choice, but tomorrow I'll be at the local campaign office volunteering my time - the first time I've ever done so for a candidate for anything.
I've worked full-time since I was 17 and I've saved so that one day I could retire - not so it could be taken from me and redistributed.
I spent 5 years in uniform defending this country against Communism and I'm sure as hell not going to vote one into the Oval Office, or sit on my ass and watch it happen.
If this wasn't life or death I might have the luxury of feeling sorry for the young Obama supporters - they've had their birthright stolen from them and they don't even know it. They were born into the greatest country on earth and don't realize or appreciate it.
So the podkids can wait by their cell phones - tomorrow I'll start doing as much as I can to get Mr. McCain into the White House.
I urge the rest of you to do the same.

Biden, who has twice sought the White House, is a Catholic with blue-collar roots, a generally liberal voting record and a reputation as a long-winded orator.

My fave part so far from the dread NYT:
[Biden] has a long history of making statements that get him in trouble. He was forced to apologize to Mr. Obama almost the moment he entered the race for president after he was quoted as describing Mr. Obama as “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” a remark that drew criticism for being racially insensitive. While campaigning in New Hampshire, Mr. Biden said that ”you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.”Mr. Biden quit the presidential race this year after a barely making a mark; he came in fifth place in Iowa. He was forced to quit the 1988 presidential race in the face of accusations that he had plagiarized part of a speech from a Neil Kinnock, the British Labor Party leader. Shortly afterward, he was found to have suffered two aneurysms.

Good prose! I wonder if he'll bother to resurrect the text-messaging thingy. Kos has some disenchanted posters today. Here's JHannon on Obama's "secrets"...
This protracted "watch us keep a secret" business has made a game out of a tremendously important aspect of a presidential campaign. For such a drawn-out keep 'em guessing process to result in gum-flappin' Joe Biden is ludicrous.
What other choice would upset Clinton supporters more? Clinton got 18 million votes in the primaries; Biden about 18. What a slap in the face to her voters. And he never even consulted with her about the Veep choice. Wow. That really IS arrogant.
Biden will present a list of Sunday morning quotes that will praise McCain, provide justification for the invasion of Iraq-those findings of weapons of mass destruction were certified, you know. He is in the POCKET of the credit card companies and voted for the bankruptcy reform act. And Kossites are supposed to salute this pick?
And the old media being left out in the cold? Who are you kidding? Cnn is blasting the Biden pick. The text message was held TOO LONG to have any relevance. And we're supposed to buy this is brilliant and innovative? Who's zoomin' who?
This is just whistlin' past the graveyard. If you want to know more about why this is not just a boring, pedestrian, hack pick, but a bad one, try, just try reading Biden's autobiography. The most self-servingt junk I have ever seen passed off as a political autobiography.
And would someone please explain Caroline Kennedy as one of a two person-team to analyze/vett/screen
potential veeps? How is this anything other than a grossly outsized thank you for a timely endorsement? This is new style politics?
I think this costs Obama the election. And you can hide me, trash me or troll rate me if that will make you feel better. But consider this question: do you really think Biden is the best choice for Vice-President? Better than Hillary Clinton, Brian Schweitzer, Wes Clark, Sebelius, Richardson, Reed, Kaine, Webb and even Evan Bayh. Do you really?
