When Nerds Collide

Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 5:34:07 pm PDT

CERN’s Large Hadron Collider will be firing up soon, hopefully not destroying the fabric of space and time, and the CERN gang is bustin’ some rhymes, cuz it’s party time.

The GOP has decided for what can be described only as traditional and intimate. The Democrats went with rock star glitz - perhaps to make folks forget the fact that Obama is actually an empty suit.

Speaking of tradition... Tradition!

Illegal Immigrants Returning to Mexico in Record Numbers.
DALLAS — Illegal immigrants are returning home to Mexico in numbers not seen for decades — and the Mexican government may have to deal with a crush on its social services and lower wages once the immigrants arrive.

The Mexican Consulate's office in Dallas is seeing increasing numbers of Mexican nationals requesting paperwork to go home for good, especially parents who want to know what documentation they'll need to enroll their children in Mexican schools.

"Those numbers have increased percentage-wise tremendously," said Enrique Hubbard, the Mexican consul general in Dallas. "In fact, it's almost 100 percent more this year than it was the previous two years."

The illegal immigrant population in the U.S. has dropped 11 percent since August of last year, according to the Center for Immigration Studies. Its research shows 1.3 million illegal immigrants have returned to their home countries.

Some say illegal immigrants are leaving because a soft economy has led to fewer jobs, causing many laborers to seek work elsewhere.

Others argue that a tough stance on immigration through law enforcement has spread fear throughout the illegal population.

Check the link I gave above to CERN. The energy level of the LHC will be enough to find the Higgs if it has a mass within theoretical limits. They should also be able to detect super-symmetric particles. Most versions of String Theory are based on scales still to small to detect with the LHC, but some some aspects of string theory might be accessible.

That'd be the only legitimate reason for dragging it out this far, surprise.

/we all guessed it was Biden already, for at least a week now, it was the Bonkey poll league leader, you made us wait for this?

I'm thinking that the only reason it has been dragged out this long is because he has been turned down once or twice. Think about it here. He was apparently going to announce while he was on vaca. Didn't happen. He has been going downhill fairly steadily and has had a couple of really bad weeks now. He is barely tied with McCain - even though Obama is outspending McCain 10:1. If you were a Kaine or a Bayh with aspirations to the national stage, would you want to tie yourself to Obama?

If Hillary were the VP, Obama would probably win the election. Leave it to the dems to screw it up. In Kerry they found the only guy who could lose to Bush. Now they got Obama who is even further left than Kerry. But they could still win if they made Hillary the VP. But they won't.

I am not surprised at all. Obama doesn't really have much experience running for office or handling the press. He has never once had a real opponent. His style is to move heaven and earth to get them thrown off the ballot rather than actually engage. John McCain was practically born knowing how to play the game. If you don't think being a military officer isn't every bit as much playing politics as being an elected official is, think again. McCain isn't even trying hard yet. Laugh it up chuckle heads, it going to be real funny when the generates a black hole and it sucks earth in!

/

The sober, spoil-the-party version of his point is this:

If the kind of energy CERN plays with could create black holes that would suck in the earth, how come cosmic rays, which are far more energetic, haven't already slagged the moon? A cosmic ray strikes it, with heap big energy compared to CERN...daily, even hourly. And never does the moon just collapse in upon itself into a black hole, showering out some spare change of energy, oh, say, more in a few seconds than the sun generates in a million years.

Not only does this not happen to our own moon. It doesn't happen anywhere in this galaxy, because if it did, it would be a spectacular fireworks show and we'd see it. And anyhow, all those fireworks shows would have happened long since, and there really wouldn't be anything left of anything. Just black holes spinning in the orbits where stars used to be.

The sky won't fall. Some doomsayers will have their souffles deflated, and life will go on.

That picture reminds me: the democratic headquarters in my town has a "shrine" in their office of JFK. There is a large picture of him on a shelf with flowers around it. It reminds me of a memorial service.

I'm in Bethesda, MD, for my last night, and just down from an Obama office. I love all the posters in the window:

Not at all. The Canadian and US govt have limited the amount of water going over Niagara to preserve it as much as possible - plus the water diverted goes to power production. They reduce the waterflow even more at night, storing it up in reservoirs nearby for release during the day into their power generation systems.

It's still a sight to behold, but not nearly as wild as it was 100 or even 50 years ago.

Not fair. Science has its place also in life. There is work to be done other than fighting. In fact, the Soviet Union spun into economic and cultural collapse because they forgot that fact. Before them, also, Sparta.

Nothing wrong with expecting our best and brightest to step up and do a tour before entering the career that gives them the rewards they can earn. A military with a broad citizen base that uses our finest minds is what we need in these times. We are in a war. Do not want a narrow Spartiate military cast. The 5% who choose that career will be honored for it. More need to do 3-5 years.

265 RememberSekhmet?  Fri, Aug 22, 2008 7:19:58pm

I wanted to address the point brought up in this link here.

As I replied, the thing people forget when talking about American technological infrastructure is how low our nation's population density is. Look at this map, and think of the nations our infrastructure keeps being compared to. And remember that in nations like Canada and Australia, the population is mostly concentrated in a small part of the actual land mass of the country. Think also of American cities in comparison with other major cities around the world when it comes to the relationship of population and square mileage.

Adequate bandwidth for a thing, be it broadband internet service, cellular service, Blackberry, or what-have-you comes from having adequate hardware to provide that bandwidth. In order to provide adequate bandwidth for a metropolitan area in the US, it can be a whole lot more expensive, as you will need to cover a wider area, and with fewer customers per box to offset your costs. Tech companies tend to wait until the customer-per-invested-infrastructure ratio gets better to expand beyond the largest cities, and Americans who don't live in the larger cities are used to muddling by with earlier technology.

Have been off line for about three/four weeks and have been pretty much not pay attention to all news. I was at home today and had the TV on in the back ground and was working on the computer. Local news (Houston, TX) was a story about a object that was found on the rail tracks (I think in Washington State). They showed a picture of it - it looked like a propane tank (one you would use with you back yard barbeque pit) with wires coming out of it. The guy that found it worked for the railroad, picked it up and carried it to his “base” and notified the management and it turned out to be a bomb. The then said that they suspected that is was not “planted” but may have fallen off the train.

Since I heard this story (about noon central US time today) I have not heard anything more about it. Attempted a google search after telling my husband about it tonight and did not find anything.

Again, this may have already been discussed here – I did search and did not find anything.

When we dedicate time to seeking vengance, plot, plan and perform, we are forever changed, and not for the better. Better to give it to GOD, and trust his judgement as to what they deserve.
We could punish him for all we are worth, and still not be sated. Best to give him a quick death. Scum like that are dead inside. They will not in most cases turn to Jesus, and so find the justice we can never give them.

re: #320 lifeofthemind

A Swiss collidor.
Soviets got a shipment of Swiss cheese, inspecting Commissar sent it back as defective capitalist trick, it was full of holes.

In July of 2000,

after months of deliberation and fierce lobbying from interested advocacy groups, after determined research and debate and consternation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (search ) finally issued its much-anticipated ruling:

Henceforth, the majority of the holes in every slice of Grade A Swiss cheese (search ) sold in America would need to be between 3/8 and 13/16 of an inch in diameter. This represented a sea change from the previous guidelines, which set Swiss cheese holes parameters at 11/16 of an inch to 13/16 of an inch.

Also, “the cheese shall be properly set and shall possess well-developed round oval-shaped eyes which are uniformly distributed.” Since 1953, the USDA has had a Swiss cheese team of overseers, and employs a team of Swiss cheese graders, who evaluate the holes in your cheese using 22 different classifications, including “cabbage, collapsed, dull, dead, frog mouth, gassy, nesty, one-sided, underset, or uneven.”

I hope that cheese was regulation.

There was a significant US contribution to the LHC and the various detectors involved. Many fine US scientists & engineers have worked on this project, and hundreds of millions of US taxpayer dollars have been invested.

Over several years of building (components for) specific experiments... and funding salaries, etc.... the US will spend several millions of dollars... yes, that is true. However, compared to doing it by ourselves (SSC) or the overall LHC budget (and funding CERN), the US contribution to the LHC is small. I guess that was my point - we saved money by doing it this way.... millions compared to billions.

I've found the .40 is nice in between round, handles like a hot 9mm, but with the higher velocity terminal ballistics are close to a .45.

.45 has slower powder and lower pressures which translates to longer brass life if you reload, and longer barrel life.

In the sub-compact size I get 10 rd mags with the .40 vs. 7 with a .45.

Yes, but the SSC would have operated at a much higher power than the LHC and would have placed the US at the forefront of physics for generations to come. Everyone is busy trying to game things out and figure out who the VP nominee is. Whoever it is will be seen as a disappointment after all the hype and nonsense unless it turns out to be Hillary. Even then, you might still get folks asking the question I've been positing for a while - why is the more experienced person at the bottom of the ticket instead of at the top?

Obama has to pick someone who will not upstage him, but who lends gravitas. That narrows things down significantly, and leaves you with a bunch of Senators who are also-rans in the usual vanity campaigns they've run in the past, or someone from the business world that we haven't even considered.

Most people think he's going to choose a politician. That's probably the safe bet. However, he might try to go outside the box and pick some business guy - a Bill Gates type for example...

Clinton said the US electorate didn't want to spend the money. That's a different thing. Clinton was a follower, never a leader. Everything he did was for short-sighted gain at the expense of long term benefit.

I'm sure the US spent much more on CERN than Canada has. There are in fact several concurrent projects: the LHC upgrade, the major detectors, ATLAS & CMS, and a few other minor experiments. Canada contributed only to ATLAS. The US contributed to all of the projects.

I asked a Canadian friend the other day what the general impression in Canada was of ol' Pierre. He said. thumbs up. Then again, he's a lefty. I'm guessing he was... well, not being accurate, let's say. Your take on the question?

I agree that there's probably serious problems - starting with Obama himself. Then they decided to go with a rollout of the name online via text messages, which actually dilutes the power of the announcement. And then throw in the delays... it shows a campaign in trouble, not one that is running on all cylinders.

From what I've read, most of the "special" loads are crap. E.g. flechettes; sound really cool, but actually are too light to deliver serious stopping power. #1 plated buffered buckshot... nothing beats it. Possible exception if you're facing armored targets.

Among Liberals, PET is considered a God, a cross between a Kennedy, a philosopher king and a rock star. Pierre was certainly a complex character. Very smart, arrogant, and self assured. In my opinion, he did a few good things (repatriating the constitution, screwing the FLQ and stopping the PQ) but he far outlived his good ideas. He also oversaw a vast expansion of government programmes. He seemed to relish pissing off people, like the time he gave the finger to some protesters in BC (they never liked him out west).

At his funeral, his official pal bearers were Jimmy Carter, Fidel Castro, the Aga Khan and Leonard Cohen. Go figure. He remains an enigma.
