Obama's Angry Veep

Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 7:51:58 am PDT

The McCain campaign couldn’t have asked for a more angry, arrogant Democrat as Obama’s VP: Breaking: Obama selects Joe Biden as his VP running mate.

So the recent events in Georgia involving Russian troops sent shock waves all the way down Chicago’s Michigan Avenue to Obama headquarters. He decided to call in one of the Senate’s top foreign policy experts to counter another of the Senate’s top foreign policy experts.

Sen. Barack Obama, the Democrats’ about-to-be presidential nominee, has chosen a fellow senator, Joe Biden of Delaware, as his about-to-be running mate for the Nov. 4 general election.

Two high-ranking Democratic Party officials have confirmed the choice of the veteran to The Times. Republican reaction is included at the end of this item.

Last year Kos had this to say about Biden:

(Via Hot Air)

Really, if we live in a just world, this will be the end of Joe Biden's political career. On Barack Obama:

“I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” he said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”
"Articulate". "Mainstream". "Bright and clean".

It's clear his career has dragged on one election cycle too many.

Some interesting comments on CNN's Political Ticker blog in response to news last night that Hillary had been informed she wasn't the gal.

Karen August 22nd, 2008 11:04 pm ET

Well, if that's true, the entire election is over for me. I either won't vote or will write her in.

One way Obama could've softened the blow to us Clinton supporters and gained some respect back from us was to send us the first message explaining why he didn't choose her.

He shouldn't be favoring just his supporters now anyway. That is the most divisive move he can make. It's really foolish of him.

At what point did the Obama campaign label Biden a racist?

During a conversation with an Indian-American political activist, Biden said: "In Delaware, the largest growth of population is Indian-Americans, moving from India. You cannot go to a 7/11 or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking."

Dr. Raghavendra Vijayanagar, popularly known in the Indian-American community as "Dr. Vijay," said this isn't the first time a Senate Democrat has insulted Indian-Americans.

"In 2004, Sen. John Kerry referred to Sikhs as terrorists and Sen. Hillary Clinton jokingly referred to Mahatma Gandhi as a gas station owner," Dr. Vijay said. "A clear double-standard in the mainstream media will likely ensure Sen. Biden gets a pass over these comments that would get a Republican in deep trouble if he ever made a similar statement.”

Vote Democratic...We're Not Racist...You Are!

Levin calls [Biden] the dumbest man in the U.S Senate and that is not a reach. Of course Joe would remind you that his I.Q. is higher than yours...

However, Jonah Goldberg said this:

I have something of a weak spot for Biden. I think he's an honestly smart guy. I think he's a bleeding heart in many of the best — and worst — senses of the term.

But the kicker is this:

Yes, Biden could conceivably be effective as an attack dog. But Biden is such a gasbag he makes the Hindenburg look like a sack of rocks.

Ouch!

59 LesLein  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 8:09:47am

Jim Geraghty finds something Biden said that we can agree with:

Obama's Running Mate, in 2007: 'I think he can be ready, but right now I don’t believe he is.'
Man, the attack ads on Obama featuring quotes from his own running mate are just going to be brutal:

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos: “You were asked is he ready. You said ‘I think he can be ready, but right now I don’t believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.’”

Sen. Biden: “I think that I stand by the statement.”
(ABC’s “This Week,” 8/19/07)

Picture the voice over: "If his own running mate has doubts about whether he's ready for the job... shouldn't you?"

I'm sure the MSM will play this up.

We should have a contest to find the Biden quote that's most embarrassing to Obama. My entry is number 59 above. Here's another one, from October 2001:

At the Tuesday-morning meeting with committee staffers, Biden launches into a stream-of-consciousness monologue about what his committee should be doing, before he finally admits the obvious: “I’m groping here.” Then he hits on an idea: America needs to show the Arab world that we’re not bent on its destruction. “Seems to me this would be a good time to send, no strings attached, a check for $200 million to Iran,” Biden declares. He surveys the table with raised eyebrows, a How do ya like that? look on his face.

82 Areopagitica  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 8:23:27am

I'm not sure what to make of this VP selection by the Messiah. I think Biden will give him a boost in the polls to my dismay. The second presidential debate will field questions from the audience and the internet. I think we lizards should send lots of email questions asking Obama, in light of Russia's freezing of relations with NATO, why hasn't Obama, in his 199 days as [my sorry state's senator], failed to hold a single hearing of his senate subcommittee? How can we elect someone as president when he failed to undertake this sort of fundimental task expected of a senator?

I think McCain has to now hit a homerun with his VP choice. Romney, I agree has some strong business credentials and his experience as a governor has weight. However, he came off looking like an arrogant putz toward the end of the primary and McCain should be concerned about this. You recall there was one instance where his comments made at a hotel luncheon made one of the hotel's staff (a legal immigrant) cry. I believe Romney blamed pharmaceutical companies as the primary reason why the health insurance system in this country is horrid. One othe factor is that as someone who comes in and buys up and flips companies, he has had to layoff lots of people. In this job market, that might play into the Messiah's hands. That is not a good image McCain wants to be connected with. I'd like to see a more moderate traditional republican. Tom Ridge is not bad although wasn;t he caught up in some scandal where he had department outings to Hawaii? Liberman I think would get McCain Florida. I think the country is sick of extremist politicans both left and right, this is the chance for a more pragmatic candidate to change things, IMHO.

As I said before, the Christian right has to get over the abortion litmus test. They are still going to have influence with the courts, but I think the days of using religion in the general election are waning. Its just not a pressing issue on most voters minds. A recent poll indicated that a majority of people want less religious influence in politics and government.

83 Red Cloud  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 8:25:26am

For all the hype and anticipation that was generated about this pick in the media I find the timing and time of the release to be utterly underwhelming and nigh on inexplicable. Once again it looks like the O is playing to a foreign audience, and dissing America and Americans.

Looks like the stereo gaffe machine is on the air.

Biden's also a change candidate. After all, he changed his hairline pretty significantly.

...Then he hits on an idea: America needs to show the Arab world that we’re not bent on its destruction. “Seems to me this would be a good time to send, no strings attached, a check for $200 million to Iran,” Biden declares. He surveys the table with raised eyebrows, a How do ya like that? look on his face.

Well, right off the bat Joe, Iran is NOT an Arab country. They're Persians. For years now, the Iranian regime has been sponsoring terrorism against several Arab neighbors. So if you're trying to bribe favor with the Arab world, sending $200 million to their arch enemies the Persians is a pretty stupid way to start.

If John McCain selects Gov. Palin as his Veep it will lock down a huge number of PUMAs for his side.

Obama Bin Biden said:
"I have three degrees." Had a double major= one degree.
"I was tops in my class." He was about 75th out of 86.
"I went to college on a full scholarship." Half truth.
He likes to plagiarize, given an F in a law course because of it.
Threatened to impeach Bush, if he attacked Iran. One week later Iranian gun boats taunted US ships in hopes of provoking
gun fire. (a dangerous man)
As posted on LGF before. He is the gift that keeps on giving. He just can't help himself. A perfect choice.

At what point did the Obama campaign label Biden a racist?

Vote Democratic...We're Not Racist...You Are!

The Dems probably really believe they need someone like Biden to win over those racist Americans to vote for Obama.

re: #25 loppyd

Here's another golden quote about Biden from that same Kos thread:

Why was this guy running anyway (0+ / 0-)
Don't forget: This is the guy who fucked up the Clarence Thomas hearing allowing a perjurer on to the Court.

The nerve of this guy to run again after stealing lines from Neil Kinnock 20 years ago.

And he has nothing useful to add or say.

I'm enjoying this...oh, the irony!

Palin is the ideal candidate. Savvy on energy issues and from an oil rich state that isn't Texas. A hunter and fisherwoman and NRA life member she appeals to us outdoorsy gun clinging types. A woman who has managed to combine family and career who as you say will appeal to the PUMAS. What's not to like?

Forget Mitt Headroom...

The choice for McCain just became easier. There is a black hole in the Dem ticket on Economic experience. Romney is the guy. Plus while some have said Romney appears too slick, Biden's smarminess factor makes Romney seem pleasing.

Romney would do, but McCain now doesn't have to play safe. My pick would still be Paul Ryan, a young rising star in the Republican party with strong economic credentials. Sarah Palin may be too light weight, but in this context, why not? McCain now has the chance to put together a ticket that's more original, forward looking and "fresh" than the stale/bitter/corrupt/racist Obama/Biden combo.

99 Peter Verkooijen  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 9:04:58am

Or Giuliani. Forgot about him...

100 socratease  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 9:06:02am

Oh, jeez, another senator. I sure hope McCain doesn't pick one for a running mate. All they do is talk and write laws they have no intention of living by themselves and never suffer the consequences of their decisions. They're my last choice for an executive post. McCain is better than most of them, but that's not saying much.

Good points. She would really put the 'drill here, drill now' issue front and center.

A hot air plagiarist with bad hair plugs subordinated to a vapid airhead with a saccharin smile. Sounds like the perfect ticket to me.

Biden will be explaining how the plagiarism stuff is overblown in his upcoming autobiography, The Audacity of Hope.

I believe Romney blamed pharmaceutical companies as the primary reason why the health insurance system in this country is horrid.

I don't believe that is correct. Anyway, I clearly recall in one debate Romney stating that the pharmo companies are the ones who make the investments to develop the drugs which we rely on to improve our health. My wife and I were shocked to actually hear a politician get this one right, so it stuck very clearly. We have a son with a condition that awaits new and effective therapies. We don't appreciate the vilification of the brilliant private sector which strives to help him. If it makes them rich, then I rejoice.

re: #102 ploome hineni

what does the VP do anyway?

According to what I've seen on TV, the US Vice President's only duties are:

1. Take over for the President, should the President be killed or otherwise become unable to perform his duties.

2. Cast tie-breaking votes in the Senate.

3. Protect the space-time continuum.

Obama has insisted that one of his strengths is being a good judge of character and yet he continually displays an inability to demonstrate this "gift" of his.
I had the pleasure of hearing this windbag in person...even more arrogant than he appears on the TV if that was possible. An A-One Arsehole.

This election just got a whole lot more entertaining! Joe will be a gaffe-o-matic machine.

Now if McCain would pick someone really interesting like, oh, Ron Paul, it'll be a laugh a minute!

The other day, Obami said he wanted a VP candidate who was angry NOW. So, let's see...he's angry, his wife is angry, his ex-preacher is angry, and now he has an angry VP pick. That should be a hit in flyover country come November. Great pick, Barack Hubris-Obama! I would love to have the concession stand for umbrellas in Denver this coming week. When "she who must be obeyed" comes zooming in with her flying monkeys, it's not going to be a pretty sight!

113 Miss Molly  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 11:50:23am

Of all the people in the Democratic Party and he picks Joe Biden! Joe is this temper tantrum, ego-centric twit. It is possible that rather than help The Obama out with this choice all Joe will do is emphasize all the weaknesses that Barry has. This is a good example of how Barry makes decisions. The damage he could do when required to make an actually important decision is way to scarey to think about.

Yeah...couldn't remember for sure if Kinnock had ever been mayor or not, and it being Saturday morning I was too bloody lazy to check. Thanks for the correction.
