Associated Press: Biden 'Talks Too Much'

Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 8:52:36 am PDT

Bitter disappointment just drips from Associated Press writer Ron Fournier’s piece: Analysis: Biden pick shows lack of confidence.

DENVER - The candidate of change went with the status quo.

In picking Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate, Barack Obama sought to shore up his weakness — inexperience in office and on foreign policy — rather than underscore his strength as a new-generation candidate defying political conventions.

He picked a 35-year veteran of the Senate — the ultimate insider — rather than a candidate from outside Washington ...

So the question is whether Biden’s depth counters Obama’s inexperience — or highlights it?

After all, Biden is anything but a change agent, having been in office longer than half of all Americans have been alive. Longer than McCain.

And he talks too much.

* * *
Sec. Rice is a Bush family loyalist and has not held elected office, plus her foreign policy accomplishments, especially in carrying on the charade known as the Middle East Peace process, probably piss off McCain.

McCain doesn't want to be a broker between islamofascists & Israel.

McCain is a strong unapologetic defender of Israel and Democracy.

61 collegeguy85  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 9:05:33am

The change he is aiming for is the change towards greater corruption (lobbyists), socialism and disarmament. He is advocating change and Biden is consistent with those principles. The chosen release time of 3 am is to set the claim that he is ready to make key decisions in the middle of the night.
The principal dangers for the Democrats I for-see are the lack of executive experience on either part of the ticket, the video of Biden saying Obama hasn't enough experience and the fact that there isn't a consistent message of "anti-DC establishmentarianism." (my word).

The official spin.

Mr. Obama’s selection ended a two-month search that was conducted almost entirely in secret. It reflected a critical strategic choice by Mr. Obama: To go with a running mate who could reassure voters about gaps in his résumé, rather than to pick someone who could deliver a state or reinforce Mr. Obama’s message of change.

Mr. Biden is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and is familiar with foreign leaders and diplomats around the world. Although he initially voted to authorize the war in Iraq — Mr. Obama opposed it from the start — Mr. Biden became a persistent critic of President George W. Bush’s policies in Iraq.

re: #90 cblesz

Biden's wife died in a tragic accident, right? Has he ever remarried? I would assume he is not married for this reason...

Michelle OBAMA was very much involved in this decision. I am sure she loves this pick becuase if Biden is not married, she does not have to pretend to "get along" with another wife and the spotlight would never be taken away from her.

He remarried in 1977.

The question was rooted in Biden's occasional gaffes. He had apologized earlier for describing Obama as "articulate" and "clean" in one unguarded episode that was taken by some to have a racial overtone. And he'd had to defend his remark that "you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent."

Biden confronted tragedy five weeks after his first election. In 1972, his first wife, Neilia, and 13-month-old daughter, Naomi, were killed when a tractor-trailer broad-sided her station wagon as she drove home with a family Christmas tree. His sons Beau and Hunt were badly hurt.

He was sworn in from the hospital bedside of one his sons and still won't work on Dec. 18, the date of the accident.

In 1977, Biden married Jill Tracy Jacobs. They have a daughter, Ashley. Both of his sons are lawyers, and the elder son, Beau, was elected state attorney general of Delaware in November.

Biden himself had a close brush with death in February 1988, when he was hospitalized for two brain aneurysms. It was seven months before he could return to the Senate.

Hmm, I wonder what the left will have to say about a running mate that had two brain aneurysms?

re: #108 Kenneth

Experience, like wisdom & judgment, is not transferable.

But that's not stopping some at the ap from trying:

Analysis: Is Obama ready for world's toughest job?

Americans picking a president usually turn to people who have run states or armies. The biggest thing Barack Obama has ever run is his own presidential campaign.

But the heart of Obama's sales pitch isn't what he's done. It's who he is.

He wants to be seen as someone who can empathize with people's problems, use his obvious brainpower to come up with solutions and then motivate everyone to work together. Any lack of experience he makes up for with sound judgment, according to this argument.

Exhibit A is Obama's early opposition to invading Iraq. He warned in 2002 that it would be a long, costly diversion from the war against al-Qaida in Afghanistan.

Exhibit B is his personal story. Black father and white mother, raised in Indonesia and Hawaii, a scholar who also spent years helping the poor in Chicago neighborhoods — Obama is a walking billboard for bridging divides.

Those who know Obama best express confidence he can handle the Oval Office. They describe him as calm under pressure, someone who studies all angles, gathers advice from the best people, then makes a decision.

Again they peddle the bs that Obama was always against the war. From April 2004 to April 2005, Obama supported the war, in particular, he voted to fund private security contractors. This period coincided to within days, the period of time during which Obama's friends Tony Rezko & Nadhim Auchi were involved in a major hydro-electric dam project in Iraq, which, coincidentally, required private security teams.

Biden's gaffes will not hurt BO.

McCain and Biden have very similar off the cuff speaking styles. They come across very similar to how GWB came across before 7 years of media filter telling us how stupid he was.

Biden's "gaffes" will be no more damaging during the campaign then GWBs were or McCain's are. With so much attention paid to what is said during the campaign - and so much air time to fill - it is hard take a simple a mis-statement out of context to make someone look like a fool.

It's after the election that the MSM was able to portray all the recent republican presidents, and some vice presidents, as fools because they would use a sound bite and not much time would be dedicated to understanding the context.

A great example would be Trent Lott's crucifixion for paying a complement to Strom Thurmund at a birthday party a few years ago.

BO's problem is going to be all the past statements made by Biden. Those are going to be run and run again to fill the air between now and election day.

Wright (who just happened to have married them and baptised their children).

Now Barack Hussein Obama selects someone who’s been in the US Senate since 1972 and twice failed for the White House because he was a proven cheat. Either Obama is a Republican plant or the Democrats have a deathwish.

They all have their faults, but ANY of 'em are MUCH better than Biden.

Sad that in this day and age that matters. I recall the flap over Kennedy being Catholic. That was almost 50 years ago! With all the Presidents/ Vice Pres's we've had, Religion has NEVER played a part in them doing a good or poor job, IMHO

Biden's gaffes will not hurt BO.

McCain and Biden have very similar off the cuff speaking styles.
...
Biden's "gaffes" will be no more damaging during the campaign then GWBs were or McCain's are. ...

It depends what the gaffes say about the person. In Biden's case it's that he's an arrogant, condescending, borderline racist elitist. He's an out of touch Washington insider.

Palin has plenty of time down the road. We've got an election to win here, not a beauty pageant.

Please. Massachsetts? NO freaking chance. I know it is not a beauty pageant. However, a majority of the voting public view it that way. If we are going to choose the running mate for political purposes (put a state in play), then why not pick a young woman who has the same amount of experience as Romney and Pawlenty? She may not bring a state into play, but she surely adds plenty of the disgruntled Hillary vote simply because she is a woman.

Romney, Pawlenty are two on the short list. How are THEY "ready" and someone like Palin is not. She is the governor of Alaska, very conservative and drilling, oil is a big issue. She is very much for drilling here and specifically is Alaska.

OK.
But, other than the oil drilling issue, what do you find her qualifications to be?
Yes, she's conservative.
And yes, Alaska is big - real estate wise. Not exactly massively populated though. I used to live there.

Romney and Pawlenty are both way too slick. Romney is OK because he has strong economic credentials. Pawlenty is a weasel, with his condescending "Sam's Club Republican" schtick.

McCain now has the opportunity to put together a ticket that's more forward-looking and "fresh" than the stale/bitter Obama/Biden ticket.

Palin would not be about Alaska, but about 'drill here, drill now'. She'll help win over the PUMA Hillary supporters and may help win in other north-western states.

There's a fraction of (mostly) Evangelical voters who will find Romney's Mormonism unacceptable enough for them to stay home, but their numbers will be far smaller than we saw in the primaries, with the spoiler Huckabee out of the picture. I think those Romney warning flags have been mostly raised by MSM Dem pundits afraid of a ticket lightyears more powerful than their own.

The theme of the Democrats campaign will not be the war. It will be Class Warfare.

McCain can not pick Romney.

Two super rich guys will be a Democrat dream target.

Florida was going to McCain. Maybe not so fast.

Biden has a reputation of being very pro Israel. He may mitigate the unease of Florida Jews toward Obama.

Biden will be an attack dog. McCain needs one too.

One man fills in all sorts of needs for McCain.

Happiness is a thing called Joe [from Power Line]

Barack Obama's selection of Joe Biden as his running mate is underwhelming for many reasons, but it affords an opportunity to review a few of the moments that might have provided all the embarrassment a normal man would have needed to escape from public life. Michael Crowley profiled Senator Biden for the New Republic in October 2001, opening with a memorable scene:

It's a bright early October morning on Capitol Hill. Joe Biden is bounding up the steps of the Russell Senate Office Building, wearing his trademark grin. As he makes for the door, he is met by a group of airline pilots and flight attendants looking vaguely heroic in their navy-blue uniforms and wing-shaped pins. A blandly handsome man in a pilot's cap steps forward and asks Biden to help pass emergency benefits for laid-off airline workers. Biden nods as the men and women cluster around him with fawning smiles. Then he speaks. "I hope you will support my work on Amtrak as much as I have supported you," he begins. (Biden rides Amtrak to work every day and is obsessed with the railroad.) "If not, I will screw you badly."

A dozen faces fall in unison as Biden lectures on. "You've not been good to me. You're also damn selfish. You better listen to me..." It goes on like this for a couple of minutes. Strangely, Biden keeps grinning--even fraternally slapping the stunned man's shoulder a couple of times. When we finally head into the building, Biden's communications director, Norm Kurz, turns to me. "What you just witnessed is classic Senator Biden."

Crowley also pointed out one of Biden's characteristic verbal tics, emphasizing the disparity between his jocular tone and his serious intent:
In an odd verbal tic, he routinely interrupts himself to offer the assurance that he's "not being facetious." He opened his May 17 tax cut speech by saying: "I find this the single most fascinating debate I have been involved in in 28 years. I sincerely do. It is not a joke. I am not being facetious." Or when the anti-terrorism bill came up on CNN's "Crossfire" last month: "In full disclosure, I wrote that bill. I'm not being facetious." When "Crossfire" host Bill Press offered Biden the avuncular assurance that "it's really a great bill," Biden pressed on: "No. No. I'm not being facetious. I'm not being facetious when I say that."

San Diego Union-Tribune blogger Chris Reed recalls Biden's 1988 response in Claremont, New Hampshire to a question about his law school record from a man identified only as ''Frank.'' Biden looked at his questioner and said: ''I think I have a much higher I.Q. than you do.''

Biden of course couldn't leave it at that. He is not known for his concision or care with the facts. He added that he ''went to law school on a full academic scholarship -- the only one in my class to have a full academic scholarship.'' He also said that he ''ended up in the top half'' of his class and won a prize in an international moot court competition. Biden still wasn't done. In college, Biden said, he was ''the outstanding student in the political science department'' and ''graduated with three degrees from college.''

Reed then turns to Biden's subsequent statement on this exchange. At Syracuse College of Law, Biden graduated 76th in a class of 85. He acknowledged: ''I did not graduate in the top half of my class at law school and my recollection of this was inacurate.'' Just a slip of memory.

As for receiving three degrees, Biden conceded: ''I graduated from the University of Delaware with a double major in history and political science. My reference to degrees at the Claremont event was intended to refer to these majors -- I said 'three' and should have said 'two.''' His arithmetic was off.

Now Barack Hussein Obama selects someone who’s been in the US Senate since 1972 and twice failed for the White House because he was a proven cheat. Either Obama is a Republican plant or the Democrats have a deathwish.

313 jester6  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 9:52:51am

re: #251 realwest

Those are two great examples to make my point.

He was paying Obama a compliment... if Biden had said that about a white guy it would not have been a big deal. Those middle-of-the-roaders not offended by that comment. Further the MSM reaction to the comment probably earned Biden some sympathy from swing voters.

Same thing about the Indian so-called-Slur. Biden was talking about how his state is very immigrant friendly. And so what if he made a crack about Indians owning all the 7-11s, gas stations and convenience stores. Not only does that statement match the swing-voters real life experience, but it certainly is not offensive to note that a certain immigrant groups use these small businesses as the first step on the ladder up to the middle class.

Make those two statements (in context) to a non-ideologue swing voter and they will not find them offensive. It matches their perceptions of the real world. Not only does it not hurt Biden, it gives him credibility when he talks about something that particular voter does not understand... because they feel Biden "gets it".

It's the same reason McCain can get away with gaffes that would kill a pre-processed politician like Obama or Romney.

Right, the Dems are going after the gullible idiot vote.

I wouldn't consider the swing voters who voted for GWB gullible. As a matter of fact, I would consider them much more thoughtful then most voters on either side who vote straight ticket. These people actually think about who they are going to vote for. There are not a lot of them out there but it only takes 2% or 3% points to win an election.

The election is really about appealing to that %5 or %10 who might switch parties. Most of the people who claim they are undecided just haven't checked who is in what party yet - they vote ticket/ideology anyway.

I want to come back to this idea that the 3am announcement somehow shows obama as being ready for a 3am phone call-

Trying to display this with a VP pick is weak at best and idiotic otherwise. He's had weeks to make this decision, and the press was buzzing well before 3am. If that was really what the obama camp was thinking- they must think the electorate is pretty stupid. Announcing your veep at 3am on a Saturday morning just shows no ability to grasp and manipulate timing. Friday afternoon would have been best- he really screwed manipulating the news cycle, and I think it shows incompetence. Worst Veep announcement ever.

When Joe Biden was first elected to the Senate, John McCain was still a POW in Hanoi.

McCain spent more time as a POW than Obama has a US Senator.

* * *
When John McCain was stuck in POW camp in Hanoi in 1972, Joe Biden probably voted AGAINST Nixon's mining of Haiphong Harbor and bombing of Hanoi = the SURGE which got our POWs released in 1973.

Biden was running his mouth in the Senate while McCain was still cursing out VietCong torturers from his bamboo cage.

According to Michel Medved, and most you may know this, McCain was stumped because the question was worded how many houses do you and Cindy own. It turns out that McCain owns no houses. All 7 properties are in Cindy's name and McCain has never asked that he be put on title nor has he paid much attention to Cindy's money. In fact he may not even know her net worth. That is why he was confused. The fact that he once asked to be put on title does say a lot about his character as well as how solid his marriage is.

Crowley's TNR profile concludes with a striking example of Biden's foreign policy sophistication. In the wake of 9/11, in a meeting with his staff, Biden experienced an epiphany:

Biden launches into a stream-of-consciousness monologue about what his [Senate Foreign Relations] committee should be doing, before he finally admits the obvious: "I'm groping here." Then he hits on an idea: America needs to show the Arab world that we're not bent on its destruction. "Seems to me this would be a good time to send, no strings attached, a check for $200 million to Iran," Biden declares. Primary was for Republicans only. Even there, by Florida a vote for Giuliani was a vote against McCain.

With Biden, they will be more comfortable voting the usual Democrat ticket. Only Giuliani helps change that equation.

I wouldn't call Biden moderate, but neither was GWB in 2000. There are a lot of people out there who want someone to tell them the truth - even if they do not agree with it.

GWB went built a case for war that largely was not true (at least according to the hard left) and should have lost in a landslide in 2004. But swing voters still believed him when he said that based on what he knew at the time he made the correct decision. They forgave him because they thought he was a straight shooter - even when he was wrong.

No, I thought Guliani campaigned there and only there and got drilled...he came in third, right? How does he help with Florida, which incidentally is already in McCain's column.

re: #404 Lawrior

Does anyone think that she will let that happen? Given the video of a drunken Biden dancing posted earlier, why should we think that the Clintons will do anything other than sabotage this run? Who on the Right would have access to video like that?

I actually give Biden a pass for this. He got drunk and started singing and dancing. He was caught on camera having fun while inebriated.

It's the stuff he does when there's no whiskey around that's a problem.

Biden is a slick smarmy egotistical deceptive candidate who makes Edwards look like a paragon of virtue.

ROFLMAO! +1

Hey all! It's humid in my part of the world.

When hubby told me of Obama's Choice (how do I add that little tm tag), my first instinct was to log-on here. Alas, I had chores to finish.

So what is the consensus?

AND how are you-all doin'?

Isn't he making fun of a Florida retirement community, The Villages?

It's a restuarant chain. That is it's theme song.
