Hi all:

I have a big problem with my computer, not NY Nana's. It is an old Gateway that we got December 1998. I tried to turn it on yesterday and nothing happened. The button turned yellow but nothing works. When I opened the case there is a green light on on the motherboard, but nothing else. The power supply does not start nor does anything else.
Any suggestions on what I might be able to do to get the old unit working again?
Thanks all.

re: #21 NY Grampa

unplug the power supply from the back of the computer not just the wall. leave it unplugged like 5 minutes then plug it back in and try it.
i have a power supply on one of my kids computers that does that, i just leave it on all the time now because it does that randomly and its a pain.
also make sure there isnt a little toggle switch there at the power supply input that may have been switched, not sure if power supplies had those in 98 tho.

anneurysims, once repaired do not represent an ongoing risk of rupturing nor are they indicative of a tendency toward future anneurysims.

There are two fans, one on the power supply, one over the motherboard. Neither runs.

I am pretty sure it is the power supply. Go with the "disconnect and wait" advice from upthread. I'd wait 20 minutes just to be sure. If it doesn't fire up after that, try one more thing - see if you can replace the power cord and give it a try. Low likelihood of it being the power cord, but try it to be sure.

BTW - Is the green light on the motherboard by chance associated with the Ethernet cable port? That may be where it is getting its power.

On 22 August 2008 Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Grigol Vashadze met with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, President of Ukraine’s special representative Konstantin Eliseev.

The Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia provided his Ukrainian counterpart with exhaustive information concerning the situation resulting from the unlawful actions of the Russian occupation army as well as on the population affected by ethnic cleansing.

Mr Eliseev reaffirmed the Ukrainian side’s readiness to assist Georgia in overcoming the crisis. He also focused on the measures considered to be expedient in terms of Ukraine’s national security interests.

There is some discussion of McCain/Clinton.

I don't think McCain should RUN with Hillary - but I do think he should INTERVIEW her. (I'm sure that in a civil discussion McCain can find some point to disagree with her on, so they can agree to 'thanks but no thanks', while showing PUMA types that their participation is taken seriously. For Hillary - who I don't think would WANT to run as a Republican as it would derail her 2012 fantasy - it would have the benefit of making her look 'important' for ego-purposes. So... win win. )

re: #55 LEGION

Malt does more than Milton can
To Justify God's ways to man...

Here's the poem, "Terrence this is stupid stuff", by A.E. Housmann

"Terence, this is stupid stuff:
You eat your victuals fast enough;
There can't be much amiss, 'tis clear,
To see the rate you drink your beer.
But oh, good Lord, the verse you make,
It gives a chap the belly-ache.
The cow, the old cow, she is dead;
It sleeps well, the horned head:
We poor lads, 'tis our turn now
To hear such tunes as killed the cow.
Pretty friendship 'tis to rhyme
Your friends to death before their time
Moping melancholy mad:
Come, pipe a tune to dance to, lad."

Why, if 'tis dancing you would be
There's brisker pipes than poetry.
Say, for what were hop-yards meant,
Or why was Burton built on Trent?
Oh, many a peer of England brews
Livelier liquor than the Muse,
And malt does more than Milton can
To justify God's ways to man.

Ale, man, ale's the stuff to drink
For fellows whom it hurts to think:
Look into the pewter pot
To see the world as the world's not.
And faith, 'tis pleasant till 'tis past:
The mischief is that 'twill not last.
Oh I have been to Ludlow fair
And left my necktie god knows where,
And carried half-way home, or near,
Pints and quarts of Ludlow beer:
Then the world seemed none so bad,
And I myself a sterling lad;
And down in lovely muck I've lain,
Happy till I woke again.
Then I saw the morning sky:
Heigho, the tale was all a lie;
The world, it was the old world yet,
I was I, my things were wet,
And nothing now remained to do
But begin the game anew.

Therefore, since the world has still
Much good, but much less good than ill,
And while the sun and moon endure
Luck's a chance, but trouble's sure,
I'd face it as a wise man would,
And train for ill and not for good.
'Tis true, the stuff I bring for sale
Is not so brisk a brew as ale:
Out of a stem that scored the hand
I wrung it in a weary land.
But take it: if the smack is sour,
The better for the embittered hour;
It should do good to heart and head
When your soul is in my soul's stead;
And I will friend you, if I may,
In the dark and cloudy day.

There was a king reigned in the East:
There, when kings will sit to feast,
They get their fill before they think
With poisoned meat and poisoned drink.
He gathered all that springs to birth
From the many-venomed earth;
First a little, thence to more,
He sampled all her killing store;
And easy, smiling, seasoned sound,
Sate the king when healths went round.
They put arsenic in his meat
And stared aghast to watch him eat;
They poured strychnine in his cup
And shook to see him drink it up:
They shook, they stared as white's their shirt:
Them it was their poison hurt
- I tell the tale that I heard told.
Mithridates, he died old.

Biden's career provides grist for McCain's mill

In August 2007, three men who later became entangled in a Mississippi bribery scheme raised money for Sen. Joe Biden's run for president.

A month later, two of the three were overheard in a phone call recorded by the FBI discussing federal legislation and a prospective meeting with Biden's brother, Jim.

It's unclear whether any meeting ever occurred or whether legislation was ever discussed, so the episode may mean little — except as an example of the potential political vulnerabilities that Barack Obama's running mate brings to the Democratic ticket.

re: #77 karmic_inquisitor

I am pretty sure it is the power supply. Go with the "disconnect and wait" advice from upthread. I'd wait 20 minutes just to be sure. If it doesn't fire up after that, try one more thing - see if you can replace the power cord and give it a try. Low likelihood of it being the power cord, but try it to be sure.

BTW - Is the green light on the motherboard by chance associated with the Ethernet cable port? That may be where it is getting its power.

If you have a green LED on, chances are you have at least the standby +5V working on the PS. There is a green wire going to your motherboard power
Connector that is grounded when you press the ON button. This turns the power supply ON. Perhaps the ON-OFF switch is broken. It connects to a dual header socket to the mother board.
Power supplies are cheap and pretty much standard [except DELL]. Replace it if all you do is E-Mail and web-surf.

No. The quote is "warm bucket of spit".

[Link: www.usatrivia.com...]

From USA trivia: Garner is most noted for saying the vice presidency wasn't worth "a warm bucket of spit," although reporters allegedly changed the spelling of the last word for print

From Wikipedia (yeah, I know, I know, but it's footnoted): Garner once described the office of the vice presidency as being "not worth a bucket of warm piss."[1] [This quote was Bowdlerized for many decades to "not worth a bucket of warm spit" by the media. The incorrect version is still used on occasion by writers who say they never heard or read it any other way. Garner once described a writer who quoted it this way as a "pantywaist."][2]

You tell em Roseanne! And we want someone in the White house who's going to actually help the Lower working class because I don't know how much more I can take! I have no money to buy my child school clothes or even a new outfit for next week. She's entering 5th grade. It's been a non stop hell ride every week of do we eat or do I put gas in my car to get back and forth to work. I hate this government right now! And my right shoulder has tendonitis for the last four months and it's freaken painful!
I just want a break! I haven't had one in a long long time! I've visited foreclosure's door now 3x and it is not pretty. When do us lower class hard working people get a break?

Obama is going to buy her daughter a new outfit and cure her aching shoulder. enough already!

re: #158 right_on_target

If you have a green LED on, chances are you have at least the standby +5V working on the PS. There is a green wire going to your motherboard power
Connector that is grounded when you press the ON button. This turns the power supply ON. Perhaps the ON-OFF switch is broken. It connects to a dual header socket to the mother board.
Power supplies are cheap and pretty much standard [except DELL]. Replace it if all you do is E-Mail and web-surf.

Hopefully NY Nana will pass that helpful info on to NY Gampa. Thanks.

re: #39 trailortrash

The basic theory of circuit breakers is that there are two parts. 1 part is a solenoid which if it gets a lot of current through it opens the circuit immediately. The other is a bi-metallic strip when too much current goes through the strip for too long it gets too warm and opens the circuit. AC breakers do not have an in and an out. (Given that the current goes in and then comes out, that is rather logical). DC breakers DO have a positive and negative end since the solenoid has to pull the circuit open and not jam the circuit shut tighter. Magnetism is like that I am afraid.

It sounds like the power supply is being run at the edge of its rating. Either that or the bi-metallic strip is defective. Removing the power from the wall for a period of time will let the bi-metallic strip cool down, but if this gets to be to big a pain, I would consider getting a bigger power supply.

I have just finished my Olympic 250 lb per battery 6V lead acid event with 16 batteries. Damn but they are heavy. I want to see pencil neck put one of these solar systems together himself. Gore would throw a heart attack. Being over 60, its my workout for today.

Okay, I've seen some hard times, and my family wasn't good with money, but it taught me how to be VERY good with money. I'm freaking up to my eyeballs in student loans and I'm hurting for money too, but asking the government for a handout isn't on my short list of things to do. It sickens me that people hold out a hand to the government and expect this.

Of course, my family's struggles with money happened during the Clinton's happy years of economic greatness, but no one wants to hear that sob story...because Dems never screw up the economy (/MSM spin)

September 1987. "...the campaign ran into serious trouble when he was accused of plagiarizing a speech by Neil Kinnock, then-leader of the British Labour Party. Though Biden had correctly credited the original author in all speeches but one, the one where he failed to make mention of the originator was caught on video; the New York Times reported 'Senator Biden began his remarks by saying the ideas had come to him spontaneously on the way to the debate.'"

248 victor_yugo  Sat, Aug 23, 2008 3:41:51pm

Dang, there's more:

Within days, it was also discovered that as a first-year law student at Syracuse Law School, Biden had plagiarized a law review article in a class paper he wrote. Though the dean of the law school in 1988 as well as Biden's former professor played down the incident of plagiarism, they did find that Biden drew "chunks of heavy legal prose directly from" the article in question. Biden said the act was inadvertent due to his not knowing the proper rules of citation, and Biden was permitted to retake the course after receiving a grade of F, which was subsequently dropped from his record. Biden also released his undergraduate grades, which started off poorly and remained unexceptional. Further, when questioned by a New Hampshire resident about his grades in law school Biden had claimed falsely to have graduated in the "top half" of his class, (when he actually graduated 76th in a class of 85) that he had attended on a full scholarship, and had received three degrees. In fact he had received two majors, History and Political Science, and a single B.A., as well as a half scholarship based on financial need.

Faced with these revelations, Biden withdrew from the nomination race on September 23, 1987, saying his candidacy had been overrun by "the exaggerated shadow" of his mistakes. After Biden withdrew from the race it was learned that the Dukakis campaign had secretly made a video showcasing the Biden/Kinnock comparison and distributed it to news outlets. Dukakis fired John Sasso, his campaign manager and long-time Chief of Staff.

OK, I'll buy that. Snark really must used sparingly or else it just sounds like a lot of adolescent posturing. But I think there is a fine line between biting, incisive wit and snark.

I personally use the philosophy if its not broke, then don't fix it. But, I am not running one of the hottest blogs on the planet. Very depressing talking to my parents, I think my dad is in the Obama camp and he used to be a conservative. My sister and brother are voting for the big "O" also but they have always been libs. Biden is a poor choice for Obama, it shows no imagination from the "hope and change" candidate. I pray that McCain's choice is much better. Did you notice how all three major networks and all the news networks were broadcasting Obama's VP announcement live. When McCain announces his VP Fox news might cover it live, but I wouldn't count on it. The others will carry it later as a non-event.

Yea there are a lot of Mitt supporters around here but I just can't warm to him. I was really turned off back in the primaries when he was asked, since he is such a supporter of the Iraq war, why none of his five sons (ages 27 to 38) never joined the military. His answer was they have chosen to help their country in a better way, by campaigning for him for President. And as someone said, he was apparently equivocating renting a winnibago and driving around Iowa with military service. I would like to see McCain really break out with an out of the box candidate.

I'm sorry to hear about your money troubles. but like you, I don't see
government as the solution. Then no one gets out. Dependency on the government is a bad bad thing. When government acquires way too much power - then we all sell our souls for security. Now I do think private charities should help those in need in their time of need. and we Americans are generous and we can expand on that. but not through an inefficient and corrupt government bureaucracy.

Talk about bias -- last night whilst surfing the channels I saw a CNN ad for their upcoming DNC Convention coverage, featuring all their key talking head-types: Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, Soledad O'Brien, Larry King, et al. The thing is, each of those personalities was shown onscreen portrayed via the same Obama-style graphics, like those of his posters (you know, that pseudo-Bauhaus, Soviet-esque blue-and-red thingy we've all become familiar with).

re: #102 NY Grampa

I went online looking for a new power supply, but only found one through Gateway at $80! I could not find a model number or manufacturere for the power supply in the tower. When I get the tower back I will try to take it out and look further.

Local computer repair service on a quick check says it is not the power supply. He thinks it is a problem on the motherboard.

Grampa, I'm not a computer guru, no do I play one on TV, but if it's a power-related problem, sometimes the fix is easy. You may have had an electrolytic capacitor on the motherboard short out, blowing a "picofuse", located either on the motherboard or in the power supply.

On a PC motherboard, the electrolytic capacitors are little upright cylinders, with the top made of an aluminum disc, commonly formed with a cross imprint, and the sides formed of shrunk-on plastic sleeving, which could be black, blue, green, or other colors. The sleeving will almost certainly have a white stripe on it, rendered as arrows, with repeated (-) signs on it. Anything coming close to this description will be an electrolytic capacitor; and there will be many of them, in various sizes.

A shorted electrolytic capacitor will usually have a bulged-out convex top, rather than the normal flat top. Normally, it'll be one of the larger ones that fails this way. A new one costs under a buck, and all you need in the way of tools to replace it is a soldering pencil, and a little hank of solder.

A picofuse is just a small tubular glass fuse, usually equipped with wire leads so it can be soldered into a circuit board. Again, available cheap at a Radio Shack, or electronic supply house.

On a desktop machine, the complete power supply can be changed out with no more in the way of tools than a screwdriver.

If the alternative to attempting this repair is replacement of the complete motherboard or power supply, you really have next to nothing to risk in making the attempt, and if you are successful, the bragging rights are priceless!

Disclaimer: I did in fact fix the motherboard in the machine I'm posting from now, replacing a blown electrolytic with one robbed from a surplus PC power supply, but since I use this machine for work, and have to be accountable for it, I subsequently replaced the MB as a CYA measure.

National Geographic has a pretty good article on historic Iran.

Worth a read some good insights into the people, some BS.

It's argu ably the world's first modern constitutional theocracy and a grand experiment: Can a country be run effectively by holy men imposing an extreme version of Islam on a people soaked in such a rich Persian past?

Part BS, but some good insight.

Being smooth and seeming sincere while hiding your true feelings—artful pretending—is considered the height of taarof and an enormous social asset. "You never show your intention or your real identity," said a former Iranian political prisoner now living in France. "You're making sure you're not exposing yourself to danger, because throughout our history there has been a lot of danger there."

Good insight, something we need to be aware of always.

So Persia was arguably the world's first superpower.

"We have a nostalgia to be a superpower again," said Saeed Laylaz, an economic and political analyst in Tehran, "and the country's nuclear ambitions are directly related to this desire." The headlines are familiar: A consensus report of key U.S. spy agencies—the National Intelligence Estimate—concluded last December that a military-run program to develop nuclear weapons in Iran was halted in 2003. Iran continues to enrich uranium, insisting that it wants only to produce fuel for its nuclear power plants, but highly enriched uranium is also a key ingredient for a nuclear bomb. As a deterrent, the UN has imposed increasing economic sanctions. But Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a conservative hard-liner, is giving no ground while at the same time making frequent threatening remarks about nearby Israel, denying the Holocaust, and, according to the U.S. government, sending weapons and munitions to extremist militias in Iraq that are being used against Iraqis and U.S. forces there.

Again something to keep in mind.

RTWT

Excellent photo essay also.

The number of houses McCain does or does not own is neither an issue of public policy nor a reason to vote for 0bambi.

Even if it showed McCain as uncaring or senile, it would STILL not be an affirmative reason to vote democratic.

What *I* think it shows is just how little attention McCain pays to anything economic. It ALSO shows how little 0bambi understands anything about micro or macro economics, or campaigning, or the role of the parties, or the role of the president, or sound rhetoric, or pretty much anything at all.

Kerry/Edwards was a poor choice for strong candidates for the DNC. The Obama/Biden ticket is even worse. When will the DNC learn that (A) Americans are smarter than they think. (B) Conservative Internet blogs have taken over the hard hitting questions and fact finding that the MSM refuses to perform with Democrat candidates nullifying Democrat media domination. (C) pandering to the liberal socialists does not set well with middle America. (D) Americans will vote for what is best for the country, not what is best for the party.

It could go the other way. I think all but one houses is in his wife's family investment trust. McCain has lived in the same modest condo in VA since he came to Washington and they sold their Phoenix home when the kids left. Rush pointed out that the McCains are providing a home for an elderly aunt while Obama's half brother lives in a squalid hut on $1 a month. He added that all Obama has to do is send a $20 bill to his brother and that would almost double his yearly income. But , of course, he hasn't.

During the primary campaigns Republicans were always saying, "This is what I'll do." Mr. Obama has a greater tendency to say, "This is how we'll feel." Republicans talk to their base with, "If we pass this bill, which the Democrats irresponsibly oppose, we'll solve this problem."
