You know, it was just so incredibly stupid of him to not have at least made a show of meeting with her, sending his vetting team to her home, even if it was just for lunch.

Just an ignorant decision to not even go through the motions, which would have cost him nothing.
Her 18 million voters have to see the disrespect there.
Even if they don't vote McCain, even if they do vote Obama, there will be an enthusiasm gap there re: money and volunteer time.

Perfect ad balancing McCain's appeal to her supporters while keeping up Captain Obamanation's celebrity status, his thinness of skin and inability to handle constructive criticism. Delicious.
McCain is a better psy-ops implementer than I thought possible. His ad guys are giving stellar performances and would win all sorts of awards if they were shilling for the Obamessiah instead of McCain.

I wonder how Biden's opposition to the surge is gonna work out Barry?
Did Biden ever acknowledge it's working? Fun stuff next week, lots of popcorn and nachos (two native american inspired muchies).

Yes. I agree. I had my ear to the wall earlier (literally) and all I heard them talk about was getting the word out to the "black" parts of town. I don't think they even care about the Hillary supporters (here locally anyway).

21 Sizzlack  Sun, Aug 24, 2008 8:43:16am

I love the fact that McCain needs to do nothing more than cobble together clips of the Dems themselves speaking ill of The One.
Too funny and too easy.

It all (D)s doing the trashing talking! How does BHO respond? It will resonate with those in the (D) who question BHO's qualifications and associations, and to the squishy undecideds.

57 Typicalwhitey  Sun, Aug 24, 2008 8:51:12am

Here ya go....

Dear Senator Obama:

I would like to apologize to you for assuming that your private assurances to me regarding your desire to cooperate in our efforts to negotiate bipartisan lobbying reform legislation were sincere. When you approached me and insisted that despite your leadership’s preference to use the issue to gain a political advantage in the 2006 elections, you were personally committed to achieving a result that would reflect credit on the entire Senate and offer the country a better example of political leadership, I concluded your professed concern for the institution and the public interest was genuine and admirable. Thank you for disabusing me of such notions with your letter to me dated February 2, 2006, which explained your decision to withdraw from our bipartisan discussions. I’m embarrassed to admit that after all these years in politics I failed to interpret your previous assurances as typical rhetorical gloss routinely used in politics to make self-interested partisan posturing appear more noble. Again, sorry for the confusion, but please be assured I won’t make the same mistake again.

As you know, the Majority Leader has asked Chairman Collins to hold hearings and mark up a bill for floor consideration in early March. I fully support such timely action and I am confident that, together with Senator Lieberman, the Committee on Governmental Affairs will report out a meaningful, bipartisan bill.

You commented in your letter about my “interest in creating a task force to further study” this issue, as if to suggest I support delaying the consideration of much-needed reforms rather than allowing the committees of jurisdiction to hold hearings on the matter. Nothing could be further from the truth. The timely findings of a bipartisan working group could be very helpful to the committee in formulating legislation that will be reported to the full Senate. Since you are new to the Senate, you may not be aware of the fact that I have always supported fully the regular committee and legislative process in the Senate, and routinely urge Committee Chairmen to hold hearings on important issues. In fact, I urged Senator Collins to schedule a hearing upon the Senate’s return in January.

Furthermore, I have consistently maintained that any lobbying reform proposal be bipartisan. The bill Senators Joe Lieberman and Bill Nelson and I have introduced is evidence of that commitment as is my insistence that members of both parties be included in meetings to develop the legislation that will ultimately be considered on the Senate floor. As I explained in a recent letter to Senator Reid, and have publicly said many times, the American people do not see this as just a Republican problem or just a Democratic problem. They see it as yet another run-of-the-mill Washington scandal, and they expect it will generate just another round of partisan gamesmanship and posturing. Senator Lieberman and I, and many other members of this body, hope to exceed the public’s low expectations. We view this as an opportunity to bring transparency and accountability to the Congress, and, most importantly, to show the public that both parties will work together to address our failings.

As I noted, I initially believed you shared that goal. But I understand how important the opportunity to lead your party’s effort to exploit this issue must seem to a freshman Senator, and I hold no hard feelings over your earlier disingenuousness. Again, I have been around long enough to appreciate that in politics the public interest isn’t always a priority for every one of us. Good luck to you, Senator.

Sincerely,

John McCain
United States Senate

Giuliani would be a perfect choice for any number of reasons.

Even at worst, he should be the choice because if you judge the pros and cons of the other possibilities he survives as the best.

Unfortunately, unless McCain really wants to be a maverick, not just play one, Giuliani won't be picked.

I remember that (funny times on South Park involving Diddy and PETA), but I had an interesting conversation with a liberal on my art site's political forum where she suggested it was because people then were "voting against Bush, not for Kerry." Old war vets don't appeal to the young voter regardless of their affiliation.

It also curiously reminded me of the early race for the nomination here, where people seemed to want to vote against Obama, not necessarily for McCain.

I can't help but point out the cognitive dissonance between the argument in this ad that Obama couldn't take criticism and the other ad running of all Biden's criticism of Obama, but I suppose they're playing to different audiences.

I guess if your problem is that there's just too much footage of criticism of your opponent by all of his 'allies' to run it all coherently, you're not in such a bad spot.

It should be noted that it depends on what part of Colfax you are on. It is considered the longest street in America (26 miles).

"Colloquially, the arterial is referred to simply as "Colfax", a name that has become associated with prostitution and crime. Playboy magazine once called Colfax "the longest, wickedest street in America." However, such activities are actually isolated to short stretches of the 26-mile (42 km) length of the street. Periodically, Colfax undergoes redevelopment by the municipalities along its course that bring in new housing, trendy businesses and restaurants. Some say that these new developments detract from the character of Colfax, while others worry that they cause gentrification and bring increased traffic to the area."

Don't know and doesn't really matter.

McCain drove attack aircraft off a carrier into the most heavily defended airspace at the time. It takes great big brass one to it once, let alone go back again and again and again.

He got shot down. Happen to a lot of fine aviators.

He spent 6 months in the Hanoi Hilton for every day Obama served in the Senate. He was busted up in the ejection never properly treated, his captors re-injured him. He was offered a trip home early and stayed following the prisoner code.

I suspect that there's another issue going on here -- and this has to do with "who's the machine that controls the Democratic Party?" (this is the "backroom power politics"). It has been stated over and over that the "Clinton Machine" was at the helm. (it's also about Bill Clinton's legacy -- whatever he says is supposed to go...) Biden has never ever attained this level in the Democratic Party. So dissing (snubbing and showing disrespect of )the Clintons means (translates) into "there's a new kid now in charge of the Democratic Party"..and, it's Obama.

If you are still here bella..here it is:

I generally don't contribute to the RNC, but I sure as hell am this year. And it ain't gonna be a small donation, the economy be damned.

I gave them a grand.

I lost a family member in this war and I want to win it, obambi wants to lose it.

I remember 9/11, watching it all happen and thinking....we are at war and my family member is going to have to go fight

I remember sitting on my front porch at my farm, two days after 9/11. Not a plane in sight. Seemed so odd, as we see them quite frequently.

About 30 minutes later, I saw a jetliner in the sky.
I knew that there was to be no planes in the air at that time.

And I called the FBI.
I called the frikkin FBI because of a plane in the sky!
Because I was afraid it was one of them.

I remember the phone call from my sister, informing me of his death.
I remember calling my Dad over and over, saying are they SURE?

I remember how they guarded his casket, day and night for 2 days.

I remember following the hearse to the gravesite, how people lined up and saluted, how the police blocked traffic and how every one of them saluted and we passed by.

I remember taps played at his grave.

I remember still not believing it a year later.
Getting an email from someone with the same name, and thinking, I KNEW IT!, he was on a secret mission or was kidnapped and he was emailing me to say he was ok.

I remember the physical blow of opening that email and finally realizing he was gone.

I don't want the promise of his life to be wasted. I do not want a President who will throw away the sacrifice he made.

This is why I support McCain

For other who wonder about that, the POWs modified the code for their situation. The CODE was written for when POW captivity followed the Geneva Conventions. The Hanoi Hilton's guest services did not follow GC.

They decided, and the POW commander issued the order for them to hold out as long as possible, then provide the minimum they could.

McCain's arms were broken in the ejection, and didn't heal correctly. The NVA would tie his elbows together behind his back till the elbows touched and lift him off the ground with those elbows. Watch McCain and how he holds his arms, that's what it did to him.

Found this little tidbit this morning while looking up 'Nam infor.

MEDEVAC helicopters flew nearly 500,000 missions. Over 900,000 patients were airlifted (nearly half were American). The average time lapse between wounding to hospitalization was less than one hour. As a result, less than one percent of all Americans wounded who survived the first 24 hours died.

MEDEVAC = DUSTOFF in military lingo.

Probably more of a fight in the "back rooms" of the convention.
And I AM serious here; Hillary can honestly say that she won ALL of the big electoral vote states in the Primaries (except for Obama's home state) and that she, arguably, won the popular vote, too.And don't forget that the superdelegates can switch their votes anytime they choose without telling anyone why or who they switched to.
Gotta love the way the DNC set up their primaries,
Hillary wins Texas popular vote, fairly handily, but Obama gets more Texas delegates than she did.
This really could get interesting.

That's why me and some other Vietnam Veterans in NYC started our charity. 8 of us altogether and we all had full time jobs. But after 11 long, hard years, I'm VERY PROUD to say that we found career type employment for over 4,000 Vietnam Vets.

You know I kind of agree.

He has to deal with an overbearing woman at home, he may be taking it out on others, I don't know.

I don't know.  He deals strongly with male opponents, and he's fine.  He deals strongly with female opponents and he's a misogynist?  And the accusations are getting ready to start, I'm sure, that if he deals strongly with Barry, he's a racist.

How about he just doesn't pull any punches and deals strongly with anyone?  No sexism, no racism, he just treats them all alike, equally.  Isn't equality what different races/genders want, or do they just want special treatment instead?

Anyone who wants to be the POTUS should be able to take the licks and have the chops.  If they can't, then I wouldn't want their whiney asses in the job.  Strength of character wins out as far as I'm concerned.  Your mileage may vary, though.

There's also Governor Sarah Palin...

After that ad selecting Gov. Palin would bring in a lot of the PUMAs.

Sadly, no, she wouldn't.

Don't get me wrong . . . I like Sarah Palin very much.

But if she were chosen mainly because people think she would grab disaffected Hillary voters, I think that would backfire:

Face it, liberal women like liberal women . . . and most PUMAs are liberal. They can’t stand conservative women. They are very catty about conservative women. Michelle Malkin, Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter . . . the list goes on and on.

Look at what was done to Katherine Harris after Florida 2000 - they trashed her clothing, her makeup (okay, they had a point there!)

Heck, Condi is not much of a conservative, and they trash the living daylights out of her, just because she’s associated with the Bush administration.

What do you think they’d have to say about a former beauty pageant winner? Not that there’s anything wrong with that, IMO, but they’d tear into Palin for that!

I am doing my best to stop an obambi Presidency.
I will do my best to make sure that any link I post is rock solid.
I am deadly serious when I think that if bambam is elected it will embolden the terrorists to strike here.

My husband thinks I am too dramatic about this but I have a young daughter to think of.
I will repost a previous post on my thoughts after 9/11 so you can understand how personal this is for me. (if I can find it lol)

I agree. I think the mere thought of Obamajebus winning the Presidency was part of Putin's calculations when attacking Georgia. Gods only know what the terrorists are thinking.

Somewhere mid way through the primaries Michelle Obama expressed her dislike for Hillery and said something that she didn't think she could support Hillery if she won the nomination. I would bet Michelle had a strong saying in keeping Hillery from the VP spot.

****EVIL THOUGHT WARNING****

HIllary started out as a young Republican... She has shown signs of willingness to trade position for power... She and John McCain have intimated that they are on friendly terms on the Hill...

I say: McCain/Clinton !..... Yeah... I know the arguments against, but it could draw a lot of folks back into the GOP, then we can set about educating them on the Free Market... I mean, the Dem's are almost out of "women's issues" anyway, they're down to trying to defend partial birth abortions, and looking through microscopes for gender discrimination that is pretty much gone (I'd suspect 90% of the supposed gender discrimination these days is actually personal dislike)...

Alright, it'd never happen, but seriously... entertain the thought for 30 seconds... kind of fun, isn't it? Imagine the Pelosi speeches... Imagine the Bill C. Super-Spin... Imagine Obama's attacks being stymied by fear of Gender Bias... hee.

Georgia's less a domina than a test balloon. Since we've got allies who "have our back" from farther and farther behind us lately, a president lambasted daily in the media we export to the world, a presumptive democrat giving "I don't know what I'm doing, but I assure you I won't do anything decisive" speeches around the world, and some large engagements overseeas already, they thought they'd put a toe in the water and see what our reaction would be.

Our best move right now would be to tighten ties with Georgia, and sweep in to rebuild their military installations, which Russia is currently in the process of blowing up. It'd be good practice anyway, and from what I understand, Georgia can afford new ones.

I think that when Obama pronounces: "Change!" this refers not just to a "change" in party affiliation at the White House -- it also signals "Change" in the Democratic Party...that is, "out" with the Clintons (the moderates) and "in" with the radical Obamas. That's the "change" the Obamas are hoping for...(a revolutionary change in the Democratic Party -- so that it becomes the party of the radicals, as opposed to the Clinton's Party of the Moderates.)

This post from No Quarter may be relevant:

I asked a friend who knows someone who has seen the video to Michelle Obama making disparaging remarks about “white” folks. You know, those angry God hugging, gun toting mouth breathers. He wrote me the following:

But there is a very strange air about Republican operatives. In the last three weeks, I’ve talked to real insiders in VA, GA, AL and here. They all remind me of a unit waiting to cross the line of departure on an attack. Quiet, determined, last cigarette, last “can of peaches out of the ration,” radio checks, confident. They all use the term “safely nominated” when referring to Obama. That is weird.

I'm pretty sure he will, once the convention is over (the Rep one, that is!).
Also - he needs to know what the dems are going to 'promise' - then he can lay into that and show what he's going to do better.
Lots of time still ...

These negative ads don't thrill me (well, most of them, anyway), but you're right. There's a time to show the other guy's flaws, and there's a time to present your own case.

This week is the Dems convention, so its all going to be about them. It's the perfect time for McCain to "talk about" them. And using the Dems' infighting to that end is an excellent way to go about it, since it doesn't put McCain, himself, out there as being "Mr. Negative".

Also, they're undoubtedly saving all the best "ammo" for October.

I think it's safe to assume that the McCain camp had a "response" ad ready for any likely Obama running mate. All around, there's a certain competence being shown. Contrast that with the awkwardness and misstatements of the first joint Obama bin Biden appearence. If McCain made half the misstatements Obama does, he'd be accused of having Alzheimer's.

306 Syrah  Sun, Aug 24, 2008 11:13:55am

re: #301 Ojoe

In that case let's say "National Common Sense Party".

Politics is ideological by its very nature.

A call for "common Sense" is really just a call for populism. Common Sense is too subjective to build a strong long term party movement around. Perot tried it, but neither he nor his supporters could develop an argument for election beyond simplistic "get it done" types of slogans.

Get what done? How shall it be done? That is were ideology offers guidance. With out ideological guidance, a political movement based on "action" will end up being dominated by Majoritarianism, which is very dangerous.

Populist parties can be very strong, but their Raison d'être makes them very short lived.

331 Urban Scorpion  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 7:38:51am

re: #330 Lizard by the Bay
I disagree.

Your average Clinton voter doesn't need to be walked through the process, methinks.

Like most Americans (heck people in general) they hate instruction and prefer to believe they have come to a conclusion themselves using the facts available. Anything more heavy-handed would likely brush them the wrong way as it would force them to look at a point-by-point comparison of the platforms. In that kind of war Obama would win, since despite McCains moderateness, Obama is a closer match to Clinton's policies.

Basically all that is holding them in a state of limbo is a somewhat irrational anger over Clinton's loss and Obama's refusal to take her as a VP. So McCain's camp is playing on the irrationality hoping to, if not gain a few votes, keep a moderate swath of the Democrat Party dissatisfied with, if not downright hostile to, the current choice.
