Installment 5 in my "What Media Bias: Yahoo Mail edition"

I just posted installment 4, and McCain was actually the lead story, albeit about his Hillary remarks. And the single pic was still of Obama/Biden, as it has been for the past 36 hours.

But that was last hour, and things have righted themselves.

Obama aims convention at blue-collar voters
Clinton expected to release delegates Wednesday (AP)
McCain intrudes on Obama's convention message (AP)
Protesters rally before convention (AP)
5 things Biden pick says about Obama (Politico)
Conventions speakers scheduled for Monday (AP)

Still one story about McCain, but he is intruding.

The Black Sea

The arrival of the USS Mount Whitney is interesting because it implies that the “relief operation” might get much larger. By exploiting the fear generated by the Russian incursion into Georgia, the USN may position a presence in the Black Sea than heretofore, something Russia probably doesn’t want. But how will they stop it without directly confronting the US? Maybe they should consider cashing in their chips and remove their forces from Georgia proper. Moscow has made its point but to carry things further may no longer be to Russia’s advantage.

Confrontation or climbdown? Your call, Putin.

I just heard Fox News mis-quoting Harry Truman. They claimed he said "I give 'em hell" .. Harry never said that

Once, a reporter shouted out "give 'em hell Harry" to which Truman responded "I don't give 'em hell, I tell them the truth and they think it's hell"

The reporter's phrase stuck.. Harry's response is often forgotten.

Barack Obama's association with Weatherman terrorist William Ayers has reemerged this week amid troubling questions surrounding a cover-up of Obama's failed leadership of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

Michael Barone indicates that "Obama Needs to Explain His Ties to William Ayers":...

...Obama's a classic Chicago machine politician, and as revelations continue to surface, Democratic buyer's remorse may be this year's October Surprise.

Hi all y'all - sort of a drive by post, but have any of you "seen" LGFer "nonic" around today? Aussiemagpie really would like nonic to e-mail her (as Aussie doesn't have nonic's e-mail addy, having switched computers and gotten bollock's up with saving her e-mail addys!).
If any of y'all have seen nonic, could you let me know and if any of you do seen nonic this evening, could you let nonic know that Aussiemagpie would like to "e-chat" with her but lacks nonics e-mail addy? (and of course nonic can contact me - my nic's in blue, if nonic doesn't have Aussie's addy!).
Thanks a lot all y'all!

It wasn't just the professors. Their parents deserve a heaping portion of blame too.

Channel will not be intimidated.....
Channel 4 announces return of Undercover Mosque

Three months after Dispatches: Undercover Mosque won a police apology and libel damages, Channel 4 has announced it is returning to the subject in Undercover Mosque: The Return.
....
It has now emerged that the same Hardcash production team have revisited the subject to "see whether extremist beliefs continue to be promoted in certain key British Muslim institutions".

In the new documentary, a female reporter attends prayer meetings at an important British mosque which claims to be dedicated to moderation and "dialogue with other faiths".

According to Channel 4, "she secretly films sermons given to the women-only congregation in which female preachers recite extremist and intolerant beliefs".

In one scene, as hundreds of women and some children come to pray, a preacher calls for adulterers, homosexuals, women who act like men and Muslim converts to other faiths to be killed, saying: "Kill him, kill him. You have to kill him, you understand. This is Islam."

Channel 4 also said that in the same mosque, "the reporter visits the bookshop and discovers books and DVDs still on sale, promoting extremist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic and intolerant messages".

Religion of fraud.....
Religious views cause sentencing 'difficulties'

Over several years mother-of-three Noreen Shah claimed more than £10,000 in benefits without disclosing up to £20,000, stashed in a secret bank account, to Watford Borough Council.

The 30-year-old “devout” Muslim pleaded guilty to eight charges of making a false statement to obtain Council Tax and housing benefits after a second Halifax account containing the cash came to light.

Shah, of Longspring, North Watford, has no previous convictions and was told she would not go to prison, but that the court was looking to impose a punishment in the form of a high level community order, or what used to be known as community service.

But Dacorum Magistrates Court’s bench, chaired by Sandra Caldwell, was informed that because of Shah’s religious beliefs the proposed community order could cause “difficulties” if she had to work alongside men.

Why Debka is a stupid source:

DEBKAfile’s military sources disclose that a powerful Russian naval contingent, led by the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov , left Murmansk on the Barents Sea Aug. 18 to dock at the Syrian Mediterranean port of Tartus Saturday, Aug. 23. It includes the Russian Navy’s biggest missile cruiser Moskva and at least four nuclear missile submarines.

That would be amazing! According to Debka, the Admiral Kuznetsov and the rest of its powerful Russian navy contingent is heading to Syria, traveling the 4,903 nautical miles at sea from Murmansk to Tartus in 6 days! Wow! Too bad they failed math, because according to Debka the Russian naval group is going to average 34 knots for every nautical mile. Jeez, and people believe this stuff?

Okay I'm moving to Nebraska.......
Law Lets Nebraska Parents Leave Kids
Nebraska's new "safe-haven" law allowing parents to abandon unwanted children at hospitals with no questions asked is unique in a significant way: It goes beyond babies and potentially permits the abandonment of anyone under 19.
"Whether the kid is disabled or unruly or just being a hormonal teenager, the state is saying: 'Hey, we have a really easy option for you,'" said Adam Pertman, executive director of a New York adoption institute and a frequent critic of safe-haven laws........
Hope this works and other states adopts it....maybe it will cut down on child abuse! !

Karzai claims 70 civilians killed in airstrike, US claims 5, and they were associated with the Taliban,

President Hamid Karzai's office issued a statement Saturday strongly condemning what it called a "unilateral operation of Coalition Forces" in the Shindand district of Herat Province.

The statement said local political and security officials reported at least 70 people, including women and children were killed in the airstrike.

The U.S. military disputes the civilian casualty figures and says troops called for airstrikes after a group of wanted militants fired on a joint patrol of coalition and Afghan forces.

U.S. coalition spokesman, First Lieutenant Nathan Perry, told VOA the troops were able to search the compound following the battle to confirm the casualty figures.

He says five civilians, who were believed to be related to the militants, were among the 30 people killed in the strike.

Sounds wrong. Here is the cost from Atlanta.

If projections hold, for the period 1991-1997 direct spending associated with the 1996 Summer Olympics will total about $1.2 billion.

and the nuclear submarine, the USS Dallas

There is this interesting tidbit in the wiki article on the Dallas. "As a part of the overhaul, Dallas was fitted with a removable Dry Deck Shelter configuration. This large chamber, fitted aft of the sail, has an array of air, water and hydraulic systems that allow Dallas to employ the latest submarine arsenal: the Swimmer Delivery Vehicle - a highly mobile and virtually undetectable means of carrying out special forces missions." Somewhat surprised the Russians didn't pull out all stops to get the Turks to say no to the submarine. The Russians should have the sea well covered with acoustic sensors since it is their bathtub. The Turks have some good diesel boats. At this point the Russians should just get out.

re: #200 Thanos

You'll know we are serious if you see RoRo's headed that way.

US amphibs are just to big to meet the Montreaux limits. I suppose a LSD with an LCAC would be nice to have but I don't know if I'd really want to put a whole Amphibious Ready Group in there. As I mentioned the LHD/LHA probably wouldn't be allowed anyway. Unfortunately we got rid of all the LKA cargo transports that would have been perfect for this operation as would have been the small LSTs. In this situation we can do like the Russians did and build up the troops as peacekeepers or humanitarian workers without using a Normandy type beach assault from landing craft.

If had to guess, I would think the US strategy is to deny the Russians the use of the Black Sea and/or blockade Georgia from the sea. Very dangerous gambit however, only one-way in and one-way out of the BS. Russians mine (air dropped) the BS approaches to the B/D and whoever is in the BS is stuck. But then mining an international waterway would mean that its on.

USN has been looking for something to do for the last seven years. Not sure the BS is the place to be seen as relevant.

Get the WHEC outta there before the USCG hurts themselves.

The USN isn't trapped, the Russians are. We control over 80% of the sea coast and most of the ports and the should be able to hold air superiority without a CV. The one way in and out when the passes snow in will be the rail ine for the Russians from Sochi to Abkhazia. That is a narrow thread between the mountains and the sea.

The knee deeps are expanding their roles and missions. They are taking more of the port security job over with the Navy focusing on unconventional combat and littoral operations. USCG presence in the Persian Gulf is increasing significantly. This operation may get the Navy to restart the LCS program that was just cut at only two ships. We need old fashioned larger caliber gun cruisers for shore bombardment.

Not sure how the port operations are being done now. The old post WW-II legacy system was a welter of Navy and Army Reserve programs.

re: #386 lifeofthemind

I'm looking at the Russian Black Sea Fleet OOB on globalsecurity.org. Granted, Ivan was always about numbers vice capabilities, but they have some guided missile corvettes and diesel subs. Plus, factor in the land based aviation and the USN has something to think about. USN current mix of ships is not adequate for the task, yet. Again, couple of Bears delivering air dropped mines and USN has issues.

Shore bombardment? You talking 'bout loosening up the defenders before an invasion? Don't think so. Although would not be surprised to see the USMC introduced. This type of op is tailor-made for a MEU. They must be chomping at the bit...but then again they are tired from OIF/OEF.

Again, my thing with this is I cannot discern the strategy. I can see the tactics but....
