I was very happy for the Chinese people. Okay, the politicians "cheated", they spent $40 billion, etc., but it feels like we'll look back and see this as a turning point in Chinese history. After nearly 500 years, China is finally joining the [post] modern world standing on their own feet. And they've suffered long enough and hard enough to thoroughly deserve it.

Hopefully, I think she has good polling that shows that he is in trouble and has a few silver bullets to drop after she embraces and supports his historic candidacy - all the while getting her claws on that fund raising Rolodex and charting a path to 2012.

She will not be caught off guard in the caucuses again (funny how that happened twice this year in two very difference contexts) and will destroy Reid and Pelosi over the next 12 months.

I don't know if I can agree with you. This was mainly a show for the ChiComs to demonstrate to the world that they are a "modern" nation. The real problem is that most Chinese live a meager existence in either a rural backwater or an industrialized cesspool.

While I would like to see this be the end of the line for the Communists there, I don't think it will happen any time soon. Freedom in the sense that we conceive it does not exist there, and will not until the Communists decide to let it happen. Given what happened to Russia after Gorbachev introduced Glasnost, I don't see the ChiComs as willing to take the chance of losing power by loosening any part of their grip on power.

Hey there Typicalwhitey - loved this line from your link:

Paul Begala, a former operative who has spoken to both Clintons in recent weeks, agreed. He said the former president, whatever mixed feelings remain from the primaries, will work to elect Obama because, “It’s killing him to watch what has happened over the past eight years. It’s been torture to watch the slow unraveling of so much of what his administration achieved.”

What the hell was there to unravel? Seriously? I do think the link is also wrong about Bill being more pissed off than Hillary; it's just that Hillary is sooo much better at hiding her feelings. She'll say all the right things, but I suspect she's going to damn Obama with faint praise.

Yeah, I’d say there’s ‘bad blood’ between the Clinton and Obama camps.

Earlier I watched that video (posted by funky chicken)
http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com/video/index .htm

The part I thought was the MOST disgusting was Part 3, minute 3:53 – there’s an interview with a woman who was a Civil Rights Activist; she’d marched with MLK. She describes witnessing two African-American males deny an elderly African-American woman her Civil Rights; turning her away from the polling place and saying, "If you're not voting for Obama, go home. You're not voting here today."
She describes the look on the woman’s face, and I thought ‘here’s a woman who suffered through the disenfranchisement of the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s; saw the triumphs of the Civil Rights movement, and is now back to being threatened at a polling place to prevent her from voting, only now it’s by members of her own race’.
This is the Democrat Party?

Of course China has horrendous problems facing it. The point, however, I was try to get at was that I don't think the Chinese people will allow their government to turn back the clock. Yes that, but we also built the institutions and infrastructure, educated the populace, and invented a form of government that supports capitalism.

FWLIW, I don't think the ChiComs are going to "let" it happen; just as with the Soviet Union it's going to be forced upon them.

You know, with all the foofrawing about the conventions and Obama or Clinton vs Mcain, the fact is that it's something WE should take pride in; every four or eight years, power changes hands in this great nation and it does so peacefully. And it has for our entire existence (excluding the Civil War).
And I think it's a remarkable testament to the wisdom of the Founding Fathers and to all of us that this peaceful handing over the reins of power happens.

And, I like those multi-flush toilets. I never saw anything like that until my first trip to France 8 years ago. For a matter of fact, I was fascinated by the many types of toilets in Europe. Multi-flush, Turkish style, bidets (I really liked them), co-ed, some co-ed rooms with no doors on the stalls, public kiosk style on the streets (after you leave, they spray water all over the inside, washing it all down) and so on.

So much to see in Europe.

150 Walter L. Newton  Sun, Aug 24, 2008 9:56:27pm

A bathroom story from me.

I found a unisex restroom today. It was Sunday, June 10th 2001 and we were eating lunch at La Gourmandiere in the little town of Germangy. This was the first Sunday of our trip. The restaurant was filled with after-church families, children in their Sunday clothes and young French couples.

After eating lunch, nature called. I didn’t have a clue. I scanned the room and saw a door marked “Toilettes” (pronounced “twah-lets” in French). Clue number one should have been that the word was PLURAL. So I passed through the door into a rather large room. On the other side of the room was a stall marked “Hommes.” I was so proud of myself. I had been studying my French before I left the states and I knew that “Hommes” translated to “men.”

I open the door and went in and sat down. My second clue should have been “why is the word men hanging on the stall door INSIDE OF THE RESTROOM.”

So here I am sitting, waiting for that great big one, when I hear the restroom door open and two chatty restaurant patrons walk in.

They are women! I figured that my limited knowledge of French had failed me and then at that moment my bladder failed me. I couldn’t control it. Now I know why the French call restrooms “water closets.” I almost pissed all over myself. I tucked my feet up on the toilet seat, wrapped my arms around my knees and assumed a fetal position balanced on top of the shit can. I didn’t want them to get a peek of a pair of men’s shoes planted on the floor tiles of the stall.

I broke out into a cold sweat and went on an auto pilot prayer vigil. “Please God, don’t let them find me in the woman’s restroom. I don’t want to get to know the local police and end up wasting away in some rural version of the Bastille.”

I heard another stall door open and shut, two minutes of silence, toilet flush, door open and shut again and then the whole sequence repeated. If I were paying any attention my third clue would have been the fact the two women had used the SAME stall, never even peeking into my little cell.

They left the restroom. I wipe, zip up and bolt out of the stall. I looked around the room to make sure that one of the women had not stayed behind to powder up or fix her makeup.

And then I saw the light. A sign on the other stall read “Femmes.” Of course, this is a typical European co-ed restroom. I sauntered out and sat down with my fellow travelers, bragging about how much I understood the French culture.

Ya know, I still remember folks saying we shouldn't go into Afghanistan after bin Laden cause the Afghani's had fought the might Soviet Union for 10 years and beat them. So Bush says, basically, so effin' what and we took Afganistan in what - six weeks?
But having to deal with his own party (he's not conservative enough, he's not liberal enough, he's not well spoken etc etc) and all the frankly UnAmerican activities of the Dems, I'll bet he's glad to step down and get some well deserved rest.

The real tragedy of this entire election season is that there are some lefties so divorced from reality that the DNC could nominate a trained rodent...(ah, wait, anyone check to see if Barack has a tail?) because they have built a reality for themselves that makes Bush/Cheney more evil than Iran/China/UBL/terrorists and anyone else you care to toss in. I can find about 46 things I could slam Bush on, but given the alternatives to leadership by someone we can count on to be consistent, I would vote for him a third time against the junior senator from Illinois and the Shrew.

I grow ever more concerned that win or lose these people (that might make up 1/3 of our nation) become ever more disconnected with reality. How do you have a rational conversation with someone that is an Obamaton? Will we need to get a 12 step program for these people? Where is Al Franken (a/k/a Stewart Smalley) when you need him?

Someone talk me down.

Daily Affirmations for your Inner Pirate
Once you've gotten in touch with your inner pirate, the job is not over. Remember to consult the Affirmations for your Inner Pirate:

Stuart Smalley's Daily Affirmations for the Inner Pirate

Monday:
"I'm going to rape and pillage today just for the heck of it because, gosh darn it, I deserve to have a good time."

Tuesday:
"I am not a fraud, a thief yes, but not a fraud."

Wednesday:
"I deserve all the loot and booty I can carry without feeling ashamed or being grandiose."

Thursday:
"I will express my feelings today. I will not hide them behind my eyepatch. My eyepatch is not a mask for my feelings, but rather a small swatch of leather that covers a hideous scar."

Friday:
"When I overtake that merchants vessel, I will not be playing those parent tapes in my head: "You wield a cutlass like a girl" . . . "Why can't you be more like Blackbeard's son?" . . . "Philosophy? What kind of major is that? It's useless!"

Saturday:
"Just because I indulge in wine and wenches does not mean I'm an alcoholic sex-addict like my father."

Sunday:
"If I must violently put down a mutiny today, it is not because I am a bad person or that I am not worthy of love; it is because my crew are a bunch of yellow-bellied, lily-livered sons-of-whores--and I am mean enough, ruthless enough, and dog gone it, people fear me."

Reagan was different in that he did not cater to the middle, but tried to bring the middle over to his side.

Republicans need to believe in their agenda enough to actually be able to persuade people to follow them.

When Republicans move to the middle, they are conceding ground to the enemy. Big mistake. it makes their whole program that much more difficult to fight for, especially since it makes their faith in their own cause look doubtful.

Alright, Sage, I can see the attraction. Seriously, I can...

But help me out: Isn't Gov. Palin a newbie? Sure she is an executive and has some great story lines, but doesn't her inexperience hinder McCain's line on Obama not being up to the task? Then there is the fact that she has as poor name recognition in the rest of America and comes from a electorially light state.

Well, much like Denny Green, I am not ready to "crown his ass", however, his central point was that Obama dropped the ball bigtime by not naming a woman as his running mate. Obama is running virturally even with McCain among women, and he shouldn't be.

Morris's point is that McCain can sweep in and really screw up BHO's demographic picture with a female VP. I think there is something to that, but is has to be the right woman. I can't be Olympia Snowe. It can't be Christie Whitman, and probably not even Condi Rice.

So if McCain can't find the right woman, it's moot anyway.

I know. It made me sick to see Costas gushing over China with a very distracting picture of Mao directly over his shoulder. Subliminal message...gee China is so wonderful thanks to good 'ole Mao. NBC could have cropped that picture tighter. As it was, the composition of the shot was weird. Too much headroom. Too wide for a talking head closing remarks shot. Makes me think NBC was required to include Mao in the shot.

It's just the opposite of what nObama did. He picked a guy who had 30+ years of experience to offset his lack thereof.
McCain has the experience, what he needs is a young, fresh face. Palin brings the youth that McCain is lacking. Plus, she'll help pick off the disgruntled Hillary supporters who are already leaning toward McCain. This would just give them the perfect excuse to abandon nObama.

With this, it is the question that is more important than is their answer. What ever their answer is, no matter how offensive it might be, it would be best to shrugged it off and not respond at all. It is the kind of question that would work on them on the margin of their thoughts, like a worry that won't go away.

It may have no affect at all. Some uber leftist are just too far gone to understand or even care that their vote could have negative and potentially deadly consequences.

The targets here are those that still have enough of a mind to think with and enough of a conscience to understand that the consequences of their actions are more important than are their intentions for them.

People are always more on their guard against quick silver bullet arguments against their weltanschuung then they are the arguments that take time to grow in their mind.

Sowing doubt and assigning responsibility are part of the persuasion game. They do not work on a person instantly, they work over time. Time is our ally as long as we are confident in our goals.

We tilt at windmills as world war looms

Is the world drifting towards a new global war? From this week the dominant super-power, America, will for three months pass through the valley of the shadow of democracy, a presidential election. This is always a moment of self-absorption and paranoia. Barack Obama and John McCain will not act as statesmen but as politicians. They will grandstand and look over their shoulders. Their eye will stray from the ball.

Ball? What ball? Women's volley-ball? Who's got the ball?

...drifting towards war...uh-huh…at terminal velocity. Sheet...we're in the midst of the most dramatic shift in the balance-of-power affecting, at least, Europe and Asia and what are we doing?

Picking belly-button lint.

The good news, if Hussein & Plug’s get elected they won’t have to worry about foreign policy, they’ll only need to pick-up the red-phone to get directions from the Kremlin - no muss, no fuss.

Mornin folks...vunderbar day in zee neighborhood, ya?

So McCain, knowing whatever he said they were going to jump all over, said "I'll have my staff get back to you." It's a stretch to reach one of the Dem's perennial favorite drum-beats about the Reps; class warfare. I.E. "McCain's so rich he can't remember how many houses he has". Of course all the houses belong to his wife and many are occupied by relatives. How many folks out there know EXACTLY the state of things that are handled by one's spouse? Agreed. And if he wants to get into a Dems v Repubs house pissing contest there is always Ted Kennedy & Co - an entire compound in Hyannis, apartments in NY, they did have a couple of house in the DC area, a mansion in FLA. Or Kerry, who owns at least five, all mansions - one in Switzerland.

The Kennedy family has a huge compound in Hyannis - more of a smallish gated community. And yes, at one time every Kennedy had a home there. There are thousands of archival pictures of the gathering of the clan at Hyannis. Among the many other places that they own property. My point was that if Obama wants to start a pissing contest about how many houses who owns, there are plenty of wealthy Democrats that have a lengthy list of houses themselves.

Panic? We really can't and probably won't do anything, that was pretty obvious in the first 72 hours. Yup, they are just plain sick and tired of being the bears lunch every time the bear gets hungry...

I'm surprised how willing the old satellite states were willing to become part of the missile shield plan...I would have thought they would be the first to come out against "escalation."

The current generation of leaders of the former Soviet Republics understand completely what it means to live with a totalitarian fist around their neck and will have no part of a Soviet- style retrenchment.
Any real movement in a backward direction will only come when the young and newly affluent who've been mesmerized by the strains of The Internationale and radicalized by their nations' own fifth columns begin to move up through the ranks of power.

Tragically, no. The Poles really finally got a definite state they could call their own after WWII ended (the previous one got divided as bounty between the Germans and Russians.) As is our own. Note the musical orientation and name of the band that Obama chose to headline for him in Portland, Oregon - The Decembrists, whose opening number is the national anthem of the USSR. Most of their other music is straight out of the soviet revolutionary era.

Does this piss anyone off as much as it does me? This can't be true:

Go look again laZardo. Poland has been an independent nation repeatedly since before the 1400s. After WWII they were steam rolled by the Russians, who stood back on the other side of the river while the Germans obliterated the Warsaw uprising. Poland did not again achieve indpendence as a nation until Lech Walesa came along - with a little help from a Pope. They will not let that go easily.

Easy enough. John won't advertise his son's service - or his own very willingly. But there is no reason that other people can't. How many of us have blogs that can feature this? How many of us make videos that can go up on Youtube? Letters to the editor, etc.

And do remember that Biden was almost as quick to condemn the Haditha Marines as Murtha - and he hasn't apologized yet. Should be some clips of that floating around somewhere. Archival statements of exactly what he said.

I wouldn't worry - they have given us a pretty big head start.

Obama's teenage mentor liked sex with kids

The Telegraph UK is reporting that Davis, a close friend of Obama's mother and his maternal grandfather, published an autobiographical, pornographic book, "Sex Rebel:Black," under the pseudonym "Bob Greene."

Marshall admitted to having written the book, which he said describes factual sexual encounters that he and his wife had with minors and other couples. "I could not then truthfully deny that this book, which came out in 1968 as a Greenleaf Classic, was mine," said Davis. The Telegraph states that, "In the introduction to Sex Rebel, Davis explains that although he has "changed names and identities...all incidents I have described have been taken from actual experiences."

Marshall's book describes, in lurid detail, his sexual encounters, including multiple group encounters with his wife and a 13 year old girl: "I'm not one to go in for Lolitas. Usually I'd rather not bed a babe under 20. But there are exceptions. I didn't want to disappoint the trusting child. At her still-impressionistic age, a rejection might be traumatic, could even cripple her sexually for life."

Time to order a new bus, Barry.

Good Morning Lizard Nation!

Hope everyone had a good weekend....

Happy to see the subject of Biden planning to pimp his son's deployment to Iraq is being discussed.

I read this a few minutes ago and I was sickened

The pair have actively sought clients that might have business before committees that Biden serves on in the Senate, and have dabbled in hedge funds, which, say Democrats on K Street, did not go well. Biden's other son from his first marriage is scheduled to be deployed to Iraq in early October, an event the Obama campaign has factored heavily into its early October campaign schedule.

"Biden is very well aware that his son's deployment is going to be a big part of what we do in October. It's part of our narrative and we're going to milk it for all it's worth," says one of the Obama advisers. "Republicans would do the same."

The same? Really? Show me a clip of McCain doing anything of the sort.

It's the Dems that feel they have to stoop to such levels because they lose on this issue every time.

Kerry -reporting for duty
Webb - the boots
Now this?

What the heck is it with you folks today. I specifically did NOT diss the national guard, who have been bearing a huge part of the burden in Iraq. Our Vermont "national guard" - the Green Mountain Boys (and girls) have had people there since the very first day in very large numbers.

I dissed Bidens' son, who is just now getting around to a tour of duty.

It's getting ugly out there, kids....

Operation Chaos gets more chaotic: racial slurs against Hillary supporters

Cobb said the confrontation started when she and Jones, who is also African-American, were talking about an earlier conversation they had at the Bud Billiken Parade in Chicago. “One day, you’ll be on the right side,” Cobb said Jones told her. She told him she was on the right side. She said Jones pointed at his Obama hat and said, “No, this is the right side,” she said.

“Then he came up behind me. He said ‘Thirty-five thousand people went to Springfield [to support Obama on Saturday],’” she said. “I said, ‘Then 35,000 people drank the Kool-Aid.,’ He said, ‘Barack is a clean-cut guy. He never liked gutter politics, that’s why the Clintons did so-and-so. …’ I said, ‘I don’t want to get into this. So I went over to the elevator, and he said, ‘Uncle Tom!’ Then he grabbed me and hugged me and started laughing. I said, ‘What did you say?’ I turned to Freddrenna Lyle, and I said, ‘What did he say?’ She wouldn’t say anything, That’s when I said some bad things to him.”

So much for being post-racial.

Obama the Cluless,

"He really wanted [Kansas Gov. Kathleen] Sebelius," says one Obama insider with knowledge of the Democrat candidate's vetting process. "And if our European tour had played better here at home, she might have been the pick."

But, says the insider, the campaign's internal polling indicated what the public polling indicated -- that Obama failed in his European sojourn to build out his foreign policy credentials. "We needed the foreign policy on the bottom of the ticket more than we want to admit," says the insider.

Sebelius would have helped Obama in several other ways domestically, particularly in the Midwest, where her success as a moderate governor in a borderline "red" state would have perhaps diluted his extreme leftist tendencies.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The DNC convention gets underway today in Denver, and while most folks are thinking that the lasting images will be those of Obama or perhaps the Recreate 68 crowd, I think the real lasting image will be that of Ted Kennedy attending and speaking before the convention for what is likely to be his last time. He's been a strong Obama backer, so it will likely be especially poignant for him.

I agree with you about Sara Palin. The very argument against Obama - that he is not ready - applies equally to her. If McCain is going to choose a woman then he needs to choose either the newly retired head (founder I think) of eBay or the woman currently involved in recruiting Hillary supporters, who is a former head of Hewlett Packard. Those two might not have government experience, but they have huge experience in the business/economic field.

Fast Eddie Rendell: 'MSNBC Official Network of the Obama Campaign' - Coverage 'embarrassing'

"Ladies and gentleman, the coverage of Barack Obama was embarrassing," said Rendell, in the ballroom at Denver's Brown Palace Hotel. "It was embarrassing."

Rendell, an ardent Hillary Rodham Clinton supporter during the primaries, now backs Obama in the general election. Brokaw and Rendell began debating campaign coverage, including the on-air comments by Lee Cowan, and when MSNBC came up, Rendell went after the cable network.

“MSNBC was the official network of the Obama campaign," Rendell said, who called their coverage "absolutely embarrassing."

Chris Matthews, Rendell said, "loses his impartiality when he talks about the Clintons.”

Woodruff allowed Brokaw to respond, and in defending the network, he said that Matthews and Keith Olbermann are "not the only voices" on MSNBC.

McCain's response to Katie Couric's question about "his" houses explained they are due to the opportunity his father in law got in this country. Mr. Hensley, Cindy McCain's father, was a high school graduate and World War II veteran who did good selling beer!

McCain was right to celebrate his beer-selling high school graduate father in law's spectacular success in business.

We had one together.
When he was 40 and I was 38 he decided to start his own business.
He left his job, apprenticed for the paltry sum of 11 bucks an hour, for 3 months.
Learned what he needed, quit that job, we sunk about 100K into equipment and there he was.
8 years later, I live in a beautiful home (avatar), I am a stay at home mom, we just purchased additional farmland etc.
People think we are 'lucky', but the truth is, my husband works 12+ hours a day to get us to where we are.

If we could do it, especially with 4 kids and at 40 years of age....ANYONE can do it!

I personally think that the decision to choose Biden weighed more on the Marketting/Branding side than anything else.

I'm sure they compared how Obama/Biden sounded and resonated compared to the others on the short list. Also, they probably are making a good gamble that Mitt will be McCains choice, so they needed an "image veep" to counter Mitts advantages.

Kaine would never be picked because his name sounds too much like McCain.

Georgia and The Stakes For Ukraine
By Victor Yushchenko

KYIV, Ukraine -- The conflict in Georgia revealed problems that extend well beyond our region. Recent events have made clear how perilous it is for the international community to ignore "frozen conflicts." The issues of breakaway regions in newly independent states are complex; too often, they have been treated as bargaining chips in geopolitical games. But such "games" result in the loss of human lives, humanitarian disasters, economic ruin and the collapse of international security guarantees.

Ukraine has become a hostage in the war waged by Russia. This has prompted Ukrainian authorities and all of our country's people, including those living in the Crimea, to ponder the dangers emanating from the fact that the Russian Black Sea fleet is based on our territory.

The tragic events in Georgia also exposed the lack of effective preventive mechanisms by the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and other international organizations.

This weekend Ukraine celebrated the anniversary of its independence. This conflict has proved once again that the best means of ensuring the national security of Ukraine and other countries is to participate in the collective security system of free democratic nations, exemplified today by NATO. In accordance with national legislation and its foreign policy priorities, Ukraine will continue following the path of Euro-Atlantic integration. This is the path of democracy, freedom and independence.

Choose you Own Hate Crime!

Have you ever wanted to violate Section 13.1 of the Canadian Human Rights Act, but been unsure where to start? Our busy twenty-first century lifestyles often leave little time for ordinary working Canadians to get involved. Sometimes, it seems as though there is little that any of us can do to participate in the debate. But now, science comes to the rescue.

Complete this form, and without even breaking a sweat, you'll have communicated or caused to be so communicated, repeatedly, in whole or in part by means of the facilities of a telecommunication undertaking within the legislative authority of Parliament, a matter that is likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt by reason of the fact that person or those persons are identifiable on the basis of a prohibited ground of discrimination.

It's easy, it's fun, and in the polite Orwellian nightmare we call Canada, it's illegal!

Rudy is liberal when compared to the deep red conservativism found elsewhere, but he's made it a point to push a law and order approach that jibes well with originalist judicial philosophy. In other words, he'd be for judges like Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, and Alito. I suspect that Rudy would have a place somewhere in the McCain government should he win, but not sure if it would be the VP slot. In Denver, Deep Doubts About Obama
Undecided swing-state voters have trouble supporting the Democratic nominee.

And after two hours of talking, and a pre-convention buildup here in Denver in which Democrats have received lots of positive coverage in this critical swing state, you’d have to say that the news is pretty good for McCain. The undecideds have plenty of problems with him, and they can’t stand George W. Bush, but they seem more deeply concerned about Obama than McCain, because they have still not answered the threshold question about the Democratic nominee: Is he ready?

When Luntz goes around the room, pressing each person to give his or her best one-word description of Obama, these are some of the answers:

“Scary.”

“New.”

“Terrifying.”

“Charismatic.”

“Unknown.”

“Innovative.”

“Inexperienced.”

“Change.”

“Hopeful.”

“Smooth.”

“Unaffordable.”

“Apocalypse.”

McCain's own mother the 96 year old oil heiress bragged her military husband the four star admiral "Jack" never made more than blankety blank dollars a year--Roberta McCain (Mrs. John Sidney McCain also) was proud her military husband didn't care about money, which SHE supplied.

It was Mrs. McCain the 96 year old who always bought the houses and managed the financial estate in the McCain family, when they weren't living in military quarters.

Apparently McCain adopted a kid form Bangladesh with his second wife, along with having a few biological kids on there own.

He also has one kid at Annapolis and another who joined the Marines when he was seventeen without the knowledge of his parents. That kid spent part of 2007 in Iraq as a grunt. He likes to play this down. I followed a link someone posted above that took me to snopes.com. They have quotes and sources to back this up.
