-RetweetZombie: The Denver Games - Opening Ceremony

Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 7:48:10 am PDT

(Zombie's reports are cross-posted at Pajamas Media.)

Although the Democratic National Convention doesn't start until today, Monday, August 25, the protests against the convention started the day before on Sunday.

The PJM/LGF/zombietime photo team had not yet arrived in Denver, but luckily fellow photojournalist and LGF/zombietime stringer "El Marco" was on hand to record the day's goings-on.

(For this one report, all the photos are courtesy of El Marco; captions and layout are by zombie.)

Let the games begin!

_MG_0190.jpg

The day's theme was "End the Occupations" (yes, that's occupations with an "s," since anything the US does counts as an "occupation"). Recreate 68 -- the organization formed specifically to protest this convention, using as their guiding principle a desire to recreate the riots outside the notorious Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968 -- were the primary instigators, with various radical, anarchist and left-wing groups joining in. Later in the day was a more loosely organized "Reclaim the Streets" protest (shown here) which basically entailed anarchists confronting the police for the sake of confronting the police.

_MG_0260_0362.jpg

A banner from the "End the Occupations March." It is truly astounding that people can openly support Muqtada al-Sadr (depicted on the left of this banner), the hard-line Shi-ite religious leader, especially in light of recent revelations that his "Mehdi Army" operated a torture chamber inside a mosque and routinely executed people. Keep in mind that these are the same kinds of protesters who endlessly whine about Abu Ghraib. If opposing and defeating people like al-Sadr's torturers counts as "imperialism," I'll take imperialism any day.

_MG_0028_0415.jpg

The march kicked off with a rally in front of the Colorado State Capital, with various left-wing celebrities such as Cindy Sheehan, Ward Churchill and Cynthia McKinney speaking while standing next to this banner, which purports to merely make a case for moral equivalence (bad enough), but which is actually pretty obviously anti-US and pro-Saddam.

_MG_0273_0375.jpg

Yes, Virginia, there really are communists in this day and age. And most of them seem to have convened in Denver, as this banner from the "End the Occupations" march attests.

_MG_0118_0309.jpg

Later in the day, the Reclaim the Streets protest arrived at the state capital, where a series of heated but essentially fruitless confrontations between the protesters and the police ensued.

_MG_0136.jpg

The police did their best to try and keep a lid on the proceedings.

_MG_0236.jpg

When they needed to rapidly reposition themselves at the protest, they hopped on these specially modified "troop transport" SUVs.

_MG_0126.jpg

Wait -- is this a protest, or a fashion show?

_MG_0160.jpg

The communists shown in the earlier picture protested against capitalism as a concept. And here we see the anarchists doing the same. This is in fact their only point of agreement: otherwise, the communists want to institute total state control of society, whereas as the anarchists want, well, anarchy. But hatred of the United States makes strange bedfellows, and for now the natural enemies -- communists and anarchists -- seem to have set aside their differences and agreed to bring down capitalism together.

_MG_0184.jpg

Shades of what is likely to happen throughout the week: counter-protesters showed up to voice their opinions as well.

_MG_0224.jpg

I just love the sign on the right: "Hey Liberals: Can't get no satisfaction? Try liberating an entire nation from tyranny." Ouch -- that's gotta sting.

_MG_0225_0327.jpg

I must say, the messages put forth at this counter-protest were extremely astute, and highlighted the greatest weaknesses in the left-wing protest philosophy.

That's it for our first report! Thanks to El Marco for capturing some excellent images while we were still en route to Colorado.

The convention itself kicks off today, and the protests are sure to escalate. Stay tuned!

Maybe lots of people will just forget to show up at this shindig. They have enough protesters and all those street people with fresh hair cuts. Isn't that representative enough?

Looks like a pretty pathetic turn out. And from I saw, NO pretty liberal girls anywhere. Now I may be superficial, but these people don't exactly look like they fell off the Mensa wagon?

Oh Zombie, be sure to find Rage Boy and gets lots and lots of snaps of him. Look for the donkey stalls ...

12 Conservative in Liberal Hands  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 7:54:00am

I'm... speechless.

I will be hiding in my office and working for the duration of the Demonic Convention in Denver.

I guess you could say "I'm Biden my time."

Just for one day.

18 lawhawk  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 7:55:59am

Nice coverage.

I think I've seen some of these guys before (or maybe it's because they all look alike). They're professional protesters, who go from gathering to gathering, hoping to disrupt the proceedings.

Then again, I'm wondering who exactly the guy in the very first photo is trying to defend Denver from. Himself? Recreate 68ers? PUMAs? Neocons? Because this is a DNC leftist event, so I think he better do a better job of describing what he means.

As long as the Iranians don't know they're American. This way they don't roll out the Potemkin treatment.

22 calcajun  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 7:57:33am

Ah, the freak show commences.

But what goes on in the Denver streets is nothing compares with the games going on in the Pepsi Center. I really do not think that Hillary is going away that quietly and the poor reception Biden is getting from her followers--plus the post Biden announcement poll showing McCain and Obama to be neck-and-neck make-- me think some form of coup is being planned on the convention floor.

It will make the demonstrations on the street seem tame.

Hey, at least the report ended on a positive note.

All I want to know is WhoTF wants to live in the "Recreate 68's" world. Shaved heads and what's with the blue friggin glasses? If that were my kid, I'd shave his head completely, make him get on all fours and have him walk backwards.

I'm constantly of a baby screaming "I want my lollipop... NOW!".

On the other hand, I'm rather impressed with the counter-protest signs. Usually they are equally as irritating or useless, but here they have some very poignant points.

They are only anti-war because they need the US to be defeated in order to overthrow its existing government, to replace it with their Communist utopia. The war just gives them "legitimacy" and media exposure.

Why are there no Olympic athletes protesting on the streets? Why has there never been a figure skater screaming for anarchy? No Eagle Scouts, no kids from the Glee Club, the marching band, the dancers, musicians, former Future Farmers of America or 4-H clubbers? Because their parents were smart and gave their kids direction in life, encouragement to do something positive. These poor things probably had nothing to do but watch TV, wander the malls and feel an increasing and overwhelming despair that their lives have no meaning. And truly these lives have no meaning. It's as sad a spectacle as one would never hope to see. They are patsies and dupes for older editions of the same inner wasteland desperately attempting to find meaning in their impotence.

The thing is that most of the protesters in Denver think that the Democrats aren't sufficiently leftist. These protesters think the Democrats are not full-on Marxist or Stalinist. They're not sufficiently communist in their worldview.

So, in a way, these protesters are going to have the effect of making the Democrats look mainstream, even though their nominee is a full-blooded Marxist of the Alinsky family tree and his social and big-government policies are nothing more than massive redistribution of wealth schemes that will suck the life out of the economy.

Speaking of how this Denver spectacle reminds us of the freedoms we have in this country, the images of the Chinese during the Olympics brought home another cherished freedom we have: having babies.

The one-child rule in China was instigated in 1979 - 29 years ago. Population of China in 2007 was 1,321,851,888, and of that number 43.1% were in the 0-29 years age group.

This means that there are presently (appx) 568,396,311 people in China - those ages 0-29 - who have NO brothers and NO sisters.

So pathetic - so sad.

Communism sucks - and because the protesting twats in Denver never look beyond the Marxist noses of their college instructors, they all likely think that photo of Mao looking over Costas' shoulder during NBC broadcasts was c-ooo-l.

re: #108 jemima

I have been to some of these protests. These are not poor uneducated kids. They are not even middle-class kids without direction.

These kids are upper-middle-class well educated kids who think protesting is kewl. They may look smelly and disheveled, but this is not the same look of a homeless person or someone who is really poor and on the streets.

Look at the long hair cut with the near perfectly straight bangs, new pairs of swim goggle, the $20 black t-shirts, new shoes. The only reason they can attend these protests is they have some external support, be it a well to do parent or trust fund.

A few years ago I went with a friend, someone who did protest at the DNC in 1968, to see one of these protests. On the way she told me she had high hopes that these kids were going to rekindle the revolution. On the way home she admitted, reluctantly, that these kids had more in common with the trust-fund-babies in Boulder then the hippies of old.

Don't have pity for them. Have contempt for the parents that subsidize this lifestyle. 'Cause when the money runs out they really will be in trouble.

Standard disclaimers apply. All hippies do not smell. No purchase necessary. All protestors are not rich. Some protestors are crazy. Your mileage may vary. Not valid in Vermont or Nevada. See store manager for details.

Seeing these "anti-war" protests was what really turned me from a college-indoctrinated Socialist to a right-wing Conservative Republican. These people are not "anti-war"; they are anti-US and against everything the US stands for. They are only anti-war because they need the US to be defeated in order to overthrow its existing government, to replace it with their Communist utopia. The war just gives them "legitimacy" and media exposure.

322 leereyno  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 8:46:48am

I have a real problem with one of the counter-protest signs:

"Hey Liberals: Can't get no satisfaction? Try liberating an entire nation from tyranny."

When you call a leftist a liberal, you are playing into his hands. The term liberal is one that leftists have absolutely no right to. They began using this term to describe themselves back when its root meaning was still intact. This is a common ploy of the left. They take a term which describes virtue and use it as a label for their own evil. When the term no longer carries any positive connotations it is discarded and a new term is used.

There is nothing liberal about the ideology of the left. It does not seek to bring freedom and independence to humanity. It seeks tyranny, with the leftists as they tyrants.

Calling a leftist a liberal is like calling North Korea the Democratic Republic of North Korea.

Remember this the next time you're tempted to call a leftist a liberal. Jefferson was a Liberal, these crypto-marxist asshats are most definitely NOT and you are only helping their cause by allowing them to choose the labels that are applied to them.

Columnist Jimmy Breslin of the Denver Post (Chicago transplant) call those police weapons highly intimidating machine guns.

I imagine that the styling was specifically with intimidation in mind.

That carbine looks like a less-then-lethal weapon of some sort. The magazine is the wrong shape and size (to big for 9mm and to small for 5.56mm). And the orange stock probably means "don't take me to a gun fight".

Maybe rubber bullets. Don't know much about LTL weapons but I know enough of the real ones to say that thing is odd.

But if it intimidates without firing so much the better.

DENVER, Colorado (CNN) – Bill Clinton is perplexed and, frankly, not happy that he was asked to speak about national security Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention and not about the economy, the issue that he rode to the White House at another time of economic peril, a source close to the former president said Monday.

I can understand why he's upset.

He was a complete national security failure.

Seeing him up there speaking about national security, will only remind people who was sleeping as president during, 1st WTC bombing, Cole, Cobart (?) Towers, Embassies, and build up to 9/11.

Are we all Georgians? Not so fast

Lanny Davis

In regards to Lanny's piece in the W-Times, I conclude that John McCain is more like Thomas Jefferson than I would have thought. Shortly after the American Revolution, the French Revolution was unfolding as they battled with England. Many in G. Washington's government wanted to either a) play neutral or b) side with England which was more powerful and the likely winner of the conflict. However, Thomas Jefferson was fully behind the French effort describing the events in France as part of "the same revolution" as ours. A statement based on principles and beliefs in individual freedom. Lanny Davis implies that in order to protect other dealings with Russia we shouldn't give support to those who want their country our from under Russia's thumb. Whereas John McCain sticks to the principle of individual freedom and tells Russia to go screw (paraphrased).

But this excitement also has a dark side – suspicions that Obama is a traitor to his birth religion, an apostate (murtadd) from Islam. Al-Qaeda has prominently featured Obama's stating "I am not a Muslim" and one analyst, Shireen K. Burki of the University of Mary Washington, sees Obama as "bin Laden's dream candidate." Should he become U.S. commander in chief, she believes, Al-Qaeda would likely "exploit his background to argue that an apostate is leading the global war on terror … to galvanize sympathizers into action."

I can't wait to hear the excuses when it goes from, "They hate us because of Bush..." to this.

Because fighting terrorism is the reason for terrorism.

You'd think now that the Democrats and their nominee NObama are full blown America hating slime-balls just like those protester losers they would lighten up some on them. I wonder if they realize what pathetic losers they look like. I suppose not, otherwise they'd change their tired, worn out act. They don't know how to deal with tear-gas, I don't think. I keep seeing sandals, long hair and long earrings and necklaces. None of which should ever be worn if you're afraid there's going to be a riot.

In the movie "Airheads", Chris Farley played a cop who got surrounded by a bunch of punks with a variety of piercings who asked him how he was going to get away from them. His response? "Improvise!" One yank of a nipple ring and the lead punk was floored.

It worked against the left last time and it will be worse this time around. The media will not be able to whitewash the rioting hippies and enemy agitators. Oh, they will try; but a virtual army of internet citizen-journalists will call them out at every turn.
The media in their monstrous hubris will remain joyfully oblivious to the derision and rebuttal being heaped on their transparent propaganda.
It will help that this follows so closely on the heels of the ludicrous spectacle at the Olympics, with NBC slavishly kissing chicom ass for two weeks while the rest of the world laughs at the network's gullibility.

Nope. It happens, but feet are very vulnerable. The problem with earrings and necklaces is that people catch their fingers in them, and that can really get you hurt. It doesn't happen as much as getting your feet trampled, though.

If you think there's going to be a riot, closed shoes are a must, combat or work - or even motorcycle boots - are to be preferred. Long pants, long sleeves, a leather jacket, and a bicycle helmet, and bring some kind of scarf. Chapstick around the eyes, nose and mouth, and if you've a square of vinegar soaked gauze, stick it inside your scarf, and cover your mouth and nose. Then get clear as fast as you can.

...Some senior Obama supporters are irritated at how they perceive the Clintons fanned — or at a minimum failed to douse — stories that she was not even vetted as a possible vice presidential nominee. This is because she told Obama she preferred not to go through the rigorous process of document production unless she was really a serious contender, an Obama associate noted.

One senior Obama supporter said the Clinton associates negotiating on her behalf act like “Japanese soldiers in the South Pacific still fighting after the war is over.”

A prominent Obama backer said some of Clinton’s lieutentants negotiating with the Obama team are “bitter enders” who presume that, rather than the Clintons reconciling themselves to Obama’s victory, it is up to Obama to accommodate them.

In fact, some senior veterans of Clinton’s presidential campaign do believe this.

“He has not fully reconciled,” said one political operative close to the Clintons, “and he has not demonstrated that he accepts the Clintons and the Clinton wing of the party.”

While the Clintons have a relatively easy job in Denver — to deliver gracious speeches and accept what are likely to be loud cheers from their supporters — it is “Obama who has the heavy lifting” this week, this aide said.

This is because large numbers of Clinton backers — 30 percent in a recent ABC/Washington Post poll — are still not backing Obama over McCain. ...

He's another one who takes himself too seriously. It's almost comical, a couple of working-class boys made good who live in million-dollar homes and act like we're living in the Great Depression. Springsteen, for example, has a home in Rumson, NJ (near the shore and extremely upscale). I once read a news item about him -- he was escorting his teenage daughter to an equestrian competition in which she was competing. Keepin' it real, bro.

Coca Cola goes Islamic. It was the topic on my local talk radio today. Pic of the can here.

Coca-Cola plans to celebrate Ramadan this year by decorating cans with a crescent moon and star – a widely recognized Islamic symbol.
...

“In addition to the focus on Ramadan and Eid, the Coca-Cola system has also implemented policies and programs to meet the needs of Muslim employees, such as providing halal food in cafeterias and organizing special prayer rooms at company facilities,” it said. “Several bottlers have also funded employee pilgrimage initiatives.”

Coca-Cola has not responded to WND’s request for comment.

Traitorous Gitmo Imam, James Yee, will recite the Quran at the Dem convention...
Denver latest stop on Yee's unlikely journey

Yee said Obama has long ties to Muslim and Arab communities in Illinois and has been "by far the strongest advocate for following the Geneva Conventions, for habeas corpus, for following the Constitution for everyone and for reaching out to all faiths."

When he says this, we are sitting outside what's billed as the first-ever "interfaith" event for a Democratic convention. We listen as Christians, Jews, Buddhists and, yes, Muslims, openly profess their faiths.

Then there's a reading from the Quran, the same book Yee says he saw desecrated, as a form of psychic abuse, at Guantánamo. It's a passage about how the true nature of righteousness is more about compassion than "whether you turn your face towards East or West."

Yee taps the passage.

"That they'll now read from the Quran at a national political convention — that shows we have come a long way in this country," he says.

I hope the cops pay close attention to thugs dressed like this.

A media so fully in the tank for Obama will massage the message to keep Obama ahead at all costs. Even other Democrats who aren't on board the Good Ship Obama see this. But even then the media will shout 'em down.

The Democrats message so far: keep energy prices high; tax the energy companies and give a portion to the consumer who will be paying more because those same energy companies will pass on their costs to the end user; more taxes and new social programs that are not going to solve any problems; cut and run foreign policy that threatens national security; and abandoning our allies to the four winds.

They call themselves the Black Block. They are the worst of the worst.
They damn near beat a cop to death in SF a couple years back.
If you ever see any, prepare for violence, because that is all they do, sort of like "The Clockwork Orange". They burn and kill for jollies.

Those are the ones I wish we had a drone following in the crispy skies over Denver this week.

For the big AIM banner in back of Warm Turdhill, I notice that of the guys standing behind him, only the one on the far right wouldn't stand out on the rez---if he took off his bandana.

Now, I know there has been a lot of interbreeding, and a lot of Native Americans can look pretty Caucasian, and the ones who are part black look all black---but I strongly suspect the holders of the AIM banner, if Native American at all, grew up black or white and found Native Americans in their family tree later on---and the guy on the right probably is Hispanic.

I live in the Ohio and really do not know what a Native American looks like. So much so that when a woman accused me of discriminating against her because she was an Indian - looked more like a blue eyed Swede to me - I thought she was making a joke and laughed. Boy did that piss her off.

But knowing what I know of other groups at this event I would suspect you are right. Most of these protesters are doing this because it is cool, and they have a stash of money generated by the capitalist-war-machine-hegemony somewhere which funds their lifestyle.

Although this is fun to watch, it wasn't the riot outside that hurt the Democrats in 68. It was the presence of sympathizers on the floor of the convention. It was Dan Rather getting punched in the stomach by a cop who did not ask for the frequency. The Democrats got branded as the party-of-the-hippy.

We all know many of the folks on the floor of the convention are fellow-travelers with the folks outside. But it won't mean anything unless something happens on the floor during the network coverage. And I really cannot imagine the Democrats letting things get that out of control inside the convention.

Hell, if the rioters get too much attention Obama can throw them under the bus and score lots of points with Joe and Jane Sixpack.

That link to the column by the "award-winning" Yahoo sportswriter Dan whatsisface was really something.

The guy just raves on and on about China's Olympic program and how they're going to be dominating us for decades to come.

He talks about Chinese athletes not having a choice about what sport they will pursue as a positive, and American athletes' freedom to choose their sport and succeed or fail as individuals as a negative.

Amazing. Winning a lot of gold medals at the Olympics (cheating if necessary) and the "international prestige" that comes with it trumps individuality and free choice.

I wrote an e-mail to the idiot asking him how he'd like it if the State decided that he was better suited to be a waiter or a dishwasher than a sportswriter and it was in the best interests of society that he choose the former career.

The really scary thing is, he might be OK with it.

The 1968 winner, Richard Nixon, was probably the first prominent politician to directly confront the media-industrial complex as an institution.
His efforts were severely constrained by the media monopoly of the time (and not helped by his own ham-handed tactics, especially those of his hit-man Spiro Agnew), but I have always thought Nixon was prescient and wise to recognize the enemy so early in the game.
I wonder how much of this recognition was inspired by observations of media-radical collaboration during the Democrat convention riots?

The soul-crushing might of the fascist state can be warded off by a bandanna.

It warmed my heart to see that they were indeed wearing proper bandannas like authentic cattle-rustlin', hell-raisin' desperados of the Wild Wild West, rather than keffiyahs.

Besides being more American, bandannas have the bonus that you can slip 'em into your the back pocket of your jeans if you decide to go for a drink at The White Swallow Bar & Grill after the protest. (Just remember not to get your colors mixed up.)

It depends on if they choose to follow the path of violent revolution or not. If they choose the former they won't be around to be embarrassed.

Of course, I don't wish that on anyone else. Maybe A Christmas Carol style experience where they are sent to a parallel world and then brought back again.

re: #714 Nancy

my favorite bumper sticker is the one that says: "I was Indian before it was cool." And they also call themselves Indian --NOT Native American.

I was just at the Pow Wow about 3 weeks ago and the opening ceremony honoring the warriors --honored all the military veterans. And all those veterans in attendance --whether Indian or non-Indian were invited to march in the circle while the drums honored them.

I attended the Taos Pueblo Pow-Wow last month. They opened and closed the events every day with a color guard in native dress. I got some great pictures of "costumes" that had very beautiful beadwork featuring Eagles and American flags. A lot of Taosenos, both Indian and Hispanic fought and died in WWI, WWII and Vietnam. Nowadays, you have to go to the rez to see any real patriotism in this area.

Occam's Razor states, "never attribute to malice what is sufficiently explained by stupidity." I don't think this is sufficiently explained by stupidity.

Not to pick at nits because I am certainly not above posting something in accurate, but Occam's Razor is little more generic. The latin translates into something like this.

"All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best."

Your definition certainly would fit into the more generic version. A friend of mine has another one that is pretty good for North America.

"When you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras."

But I do like your version. I have been using it for years and it keeps me from hating people I would otherwise think are evil, when they are just run of the mill stupid.

I believe it. But when and where I grew up - Cleveland in the 70s and 80s - Blacks had a corner on the discrimination market. I just did not know about any other groups because the Black groups made sure Blacks were the only oppressed group on the radar screen.

I made the mistake of getting involved in Student Government. The Black students - and they were Black at that time - were protesting because the university was not accepting and graduating enough students. When I pointed out that our biggest pool of students was from the Cleveland City School system and many of the graduates were functional illiterates the other members of the Senate were stunned. I was impeached all in one meeting.

Afterwords a few friends who voted for me but obviously lost took me out for a beer. My friends told me that during the closed door deliberations everyone agreed what I said was true, but that I should know better then to say it in an open session.

Everytime, someone I know urges me to get into politics - even an appointed member to the sewer board - I remember that incident and tell them no.

(Yes it worked for Ghandi but entirely different circumstances.)

In every photo feature Zombie has presented, I can't imagine ANY of these protesters actually sticking around if REAL violence broke out! They are safe because they KNOW there are police who are going to protect THEM as well if things get out of control.

Short answer: Yes.

What do you figure the average age of the protesters is? 20? 20½?

And the patriotic counter-protestors are great. Kinda puts it all in perspective. The polls should see a 10 point bounce out of this convention... for McCain, that is.
