Monday Morning Zombie Update

Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:25:42 am PDT

We should have some more photos from Denver soon; I’ve been keeping in touch with Agent Z via SMS on a jailbroken iPhone. Upcoming highlights: the Falun Gong protest, and Angry Joe Biden’s arrival.

There is fire at the travel agency.
Wounds my heart with a monotonous languor.

The drive-by DNC media are not doing the job. The reports I hear on the radio are essentially: "there are 3 protectors and tons of police".
That's not what the photos in the previous thread portray.

Also about The Villages....

Doctors said sexually transmitted diseases among senior citizens are running rampant at a popular Central Florida retirement community, according to a Local 6 News report.

A gynecologist at The Villages community near Orlando, Fla., said she treats more cases of herpes and the human papilloma virus in the retirement community than she did in the city of Miami.

Just got this, courtesy a WaPo DNC convention "LiveWire" update:

Clinton Takes on New McCain Ads
DENVER, Colo. -- Hillary Clinton struck back today at John McCain's efforts to woo her supporters in new television ads.

“I’m Hillary Clinton and I do not approve that message," Clinton said of the ads that suggest Obama passed over the New York senator because he was threatened by his primary rival. Clinton spoke at the New York Democratic Party’s delegation breakfast this morning at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Denver.

Democrats open their national convention today with an ambitious agenda of selling the presidential candidacy of Sen. Barack Obama to a national audience and unifying a party still recovering from a bruising primary.

Yawn.

Democrats to mock McCain's torture in Veitnam....
Convention alert (w/poll): Jangling keys could backfire on Dems

However, one of my coworkers, who frequents Democratic Underground, alerted me to an article in Salon that reveals an inconvenient reality for delegates planning to jangle keys at the convention.
....

McCain has himself described having an adverse reaction to the sound of jangling keys, which reminds him of his Vietnam jailers.

....
At first glance, I tend to agree with Denise that, by going with the "jangling keys," we run the risk of being painted with the Traditional Media Megaphone as being insensitive to McCain's PTSD and, as is customary for right-wingers in general, as "not supporting the troops." All fodder for McCain's pet right-wing noise machine.

So I walked into my room and bigger than life, there was a man standing by my desk holding the room phone with a screwdriver in his hand!

I immediately said; "What the hell are you doing? Are you putting a bug on my phone?" He looked like he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar and stammered out: "N--no, we are having problems with the phone." I told him to get out of my room because my phone was fine and I called the front desk and the person at the front desk stammered something out about "problems" with some of the phones.

The Democrats have embarked on a highly visible effort to make their convention the "greenest" ever, focusing on everything from expanded recycling to more creative programs like encouraging Denver restaurants to offer "lean 'n' green" meals made with healthful, organic, and locally sourced ingredients. But not all of their environmentally friendly initiatives have gone as planned. Take the hotel card keys, for example. Instead of the traditional plastic cards, the Sheraton in downtown handed guests Visa-sponsored swipe cards "made from sustainably-harvested wood." The plan lasted all of a few hours. By Saturday night, enough guests had reported problems getting into their rooms with the wooden cards that the front desk clerks had abandoned them and switched back to the plastic cards. A clerk said they were now handing out one of each and suggested that the wooden one could kept as a souvenir.

I love it when a plan comes together!

Speaking of keys, the idiots wanted to go green, so had hotels create wooden keys (don't ask how that is more green than the plastic keys since wood has to come from trees that are raped from the earth, but I digress). Well, everything changed from Day 1. Oh wait. It didn't. The keys didn't work, and the hotels had to issue the plastic keys anyway. So, they not only had to use wooden keys that didn't work, but had to issue the plastic keys.

Epic fail.

I'm not surprised that the majority in the poll there see no problem with this, almost hopeful it will trigger a PTSD reaction in McCain. These people really are sick, and this will surely backfire on them just like the General Betrayus stunt did. Not only are the sick, they're really stupid too.

They can't help themselves.

Speaking of tried....
Rain washes out 'car free' day in Seattle

"A car passes by every once in a while, just people trying to get home. And they don't know how to get home," said resident Matt O'Connor.

"I think most people are scratching their heads. I've seen people move the signs and drive through anyway," said Hubbard.

With more police officers diverting traffic than actual people, the city decided to end the event two hours earlier.

O'Connor said the idea was good in theory, "but in practice, it needs a little bit of work."

Adding insult to injury, the cars owned by some residents in the neighborhood were towed because the city wanted to clear the streets.

The seniors are feeling frisky these days.

Maybe.....or maybe not.
There is no reason to suppose that they contracted the diseases recently.
An OB/GYN friend of mine has noted that the period between the widespread use of anti-biotics and the AIDS crisis was the heyday of unprotected sex. The folks born just before the baby boom and the earlier boomers were young and frisky during that period, and they are the people logging into retirement communities right now.
My friend maintains that almost all of the newly diagnosed disease in senior women dates back a long while.

The big fear of an Obama Presidency is Iran. Israel destroyed, and Iran in charge of Saudi and Iraq (at least where the oil is in Iraq) in addition to the Persian Gulf and Iran'sown oil supply. A nuclear Iran could bring all of that about, and Obama promises to be weak enough to allow it.

A collapsed economy will bring that chicken home to roost, and a resurgent Soviet Union would just be icing on the cake, as it were. But, hey, we'd implement the Kyoto Protocol, so the world would love us, right?

It'll take a lot of digging to get out of the hole Obama will dig for us. But then, Obama would count it as a success if fewer people were getting rich. Especially if only the right people were getting rich, while the wrong people (read: the vast majority of us) were getting poorer. Anything to cut our carbon footprint.

I think we need the term back. IMHO, a parlor is a sitting room kept nice for entertaining.

Decades ago, it was replaced with one sitting room for both guests and for the family use on a regular basis: the living room.

But with the rise of the family room, the rooms now still called the "living" rooms in most homes are not for everyday living, but are indeed really parlors - nice rooms for receiving guests.

You are absolutely right, on all counts.

I'm an incurable optimist (what can I say). Never give up, never give in, fight for right always.

Maybe but as politics has intruded on who I consider friends, there are fewer and fewer "guests". But that is just me.

They're thinking that someone shouldn't profit off of what you genuinely need.

It all ties in to the corresponding opposite belief that those making a profit are tricking people, selling them "junk they don't need."

It is how they can look at someone who forces an unpopular tax through in order to subsidize a local puppet theater that couldn't make it on its own in the free market and call that someone a "public servant" although they are clearly serving a project the public chose against.

Then they look at a man like Sam Walton who made billions and would never think to call him a public servant, although he served up exactly what the public wanted.

I don't think race has anything to do with it. I think the right black man (or woman) could win this year, but I don't think Obama is the right one. His Messiah act may be good for firing up the moonbat base, but it is somewhere between creepy and repulsive to the rest of America. Again, this has nothing to do with his race. A white man playing the same schtick would get the same results.

Ronald Reagan didn't portray himself as a god incarnate, and he was the last President to really decisively win the Presidency. Obama's overplayed his hand, and now it's just a matter of McCain shoring up his base (what I meant about McCain fucking it up earlier), and being himself. He'll have to fight for it, but I think he got what it takes to win this election.

Obama doesn't. He's too inexperienced (even he agrees on this; why else did he pick Biden if not to shore up his weakness in experience?) to close the sale. With the media four-square in his court, pushing the meme that what we need is change, voters are still going to ask "Change how?"

Obama can't truthfully answer that question and win, and he can't not answer it at all and win. He's hoping to distract from it, but I don't think that'll work. And he's not a good enough liar to lie about it to the American people and convince enough of them to win.

Jones: 'Doubting Thomas not Uncle Tom'

Perfectly illustrating the role of "identity politics" in today's Democrat party is this quote from the President of the NOW Illinois Chapter, “Women in Illinois had that pressure, and it was particularly hard for African-American women who were placed in the untenable position of having to chose between their race and between their gender,” Grabenhofer said.

If we don't have a government health service already, it's only because Hillary was such a bitch. Both sides were ready to pass something in 1993. She's delayed it 15 years so far. It will happen, y'know. Look how broken we are today, can't run an ER, because you have to take all comers, and most never pay. Just so you can buy premium coverage as well, we maintain some market forces. Yeah, it will cost more federal money, but (this is a standard donk argument) most of the money is already in the system, just badly spent. And much of the current system sucks, quality-wise, hospital-errors and such.

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) — President Bush is dispatching Vice President Dick Cheney to Georgia, the latest burst of political support for an ally reeling from war with Russia.

The White House announced Cheney's trip Monday as the administration blasted Russia anew for failing to fully honor a cease-fire deal with Georgia, a former Soviet republic. The administration also chided Russian lawmakers for endorsing independence of Georgia's two breakaway regions, saying its Cold War foe has no authority to make that decision on its own.

That's how I see it shaping up. Remember, all John McCain has to do is win the same States George Bush won, and he's President. It'd be nice if he picked up some Blue States, but some of them he's never going to win. California, for example, and New York.

OTOH, Obama's already written off the entire South. Add the small Western States that Bush won, and Obama has to win about everything else to win. That is a daunting task. I don't think he can do it.

That's more than Hope. Obama should have been the Democrat's Reagan. Things aren't nearly as bad as they were coming out of the Carter Administration, but the Media has made it seem like things were awful. Perception is reality, to a lot of voters, and Obama will win all of those.

But that won't be enogh to put him over the top.

"Parlor pink" has a number of interesting associations. "Pink," of course, suggests that one is oh-so-delicately tinged with red; "parlor" adds to the air of faux-gentility.

One should, however, also remember that a "parlor" is a house's public room where people gather to "parler," i.e., to talk. So a "parlor pink" also suggests someone who talks a good game but does not really have the courage of his or her own convictions.

Your analysis is excellent. You've explained exactly why I love that expression.

We lost a fairly decent local supermarket chain up here in the Twin Cities because the grocery worker's union got greedy and went on strike.

Good evening, my fellow Barack Americans!

I am Michelle Obama. (Pause for adulation. Frown at insufficient applause. Wait for more.)

I am just an ordinary working mom from an ordinary town. A “civilian” innocent in the ways of politics. Just like you.

(Well, except for my hard Left thesis-writing skills. And my hard-core Chicago family political ties. And my high-powered, $317,000-a-year affirmative action job. And my role in organizing the Woods Fund panel that Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers and Barack appeared on together.)

Some have referred to me as Obama’s “bitter half.”

But, really, truly, I am so grateful to be here tonight.

(Well, except for all the burdensome sacrifices I have been forced to make throughout this campaign in pursuit of the White House and my victimization at the hands of those wife-beating racist Republicans.)

Excellent points. Despite the gloss by the MSM, the spin placed on it by the left leaning politicians that seek to expand government control and management of people's daily lives everywhere socialized / nationalized health care has been implemented has resulted in a far more limited and restricted system than available in the free market.

Health care is no different from any other economic market - or even societal condition. Markets and society thrive with limited regulation and controls based around the simple principles of freedom and liberty. Markets and societies that are heavily regulated, without basic freedoms and liberties, and lacking the flexibility that freedom and liberty provide are stagnant failures.

This is a little old but I'll post it anyway:

The Green Left Weekly whines about "The Nightmare of Food."

Who suffers most? “Poverty. Class. Income. Over and over, these emerge as the key determinants of obesity and weight-related disease,” Critser says. He is no socialist though, and Marx doesn’t get so much as a mention in the book (Critser actually has a swipe at what he calls the “self-proclaimed ‘progressive left’”). His final chapter, on combating the epidemic, is the weakest in the book, and doesn’t go far beyond advocating better education and stronger parental control over diet and exercise. Still, despite its limitations, Critser’s book could very usefully be read by all socialists and all parents: he does us a great service in painting a vivid picture of the lurid world of McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Coca Cola, and their partners in corporate crimes against human well-being.

If someone, in the time before the birth of Karl Marx, stood up on an old crate at a street corner in London, Paris, or Berlin, and tried to describe a world where food was plentiful and affordable to the working classes as "a nightmare" or in any other was as evil, he would dragged away to an insane asylum if he was lucky.

The Left, whenever it has gained unrestrained power as in Soviet Russia, Red China, North Korea, and Rouge Kampuchea, has enforced poverty and starvation and in some cases has seized or destroyed local food supplies as a means of killing off resisting populations.

Lefties...feh!

For the coal mines, they seem to go on strike every ten years, for about a year. Because the union tells them to. They tell me they love the union because it pay them a salary during that time.

Probably equaly to the amount they put in in dues, minus Union official salaries, of course.

Ever wonder why union emloyees (secretaries, etc) aren't union? And why the unions hire day laborers from the streets to do the picketing? That was specifically the case here when they were picketing Publix for years because the employees refused to go union.

The answer is that the tax laws are written, not to protect the rich, but rather, to act as an agent to increase opportunities for all.

If we don't have a government health service already, it's only because Hillary was such a bitch. Both sides were ready to pass something in 1993.

I'm sure we'll get it eventually. There are far too many people who believe they are entitled to medical care on someone else's dime. For now, I'll stick with my high deductible catastrophic policy and my HSA. I have no desire to pay for people who don't give a shit about their own health.

437 formercorpsman  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 1:49:11pm

re: #380 galloping granny

To some degree, yes.

The scenario to unfold will be:
There is no way for the government nationalize health care without doing one of two things. That would be to cut reimbursement or raise taxes, or most likely, both.

First think about it this way. One of the largest financial sectors in our markets is health care. Start limiting reimbursement, it will have a negative effect on that sector of the economy. As well, health & human services is already the largest expenditure of the federal budget, whoever implements such bureaucracy realizes, being on the hook for that tax hike will not see anything close to a second term.

What you have left, is what has been happening all along. They will decrease the amount of money they reimburse now, to people actually delivering the damn service, and put the profit margin solely on their backs.

This will subsequently limit access, because it will not be worth the while of anyone working in this field to be motivated to give more care, let alone go to school for upwards of 15 years to become a specialist.

Sorry for long rant, I could go on for days.

re: #309 Cap'n DOC

The color of his skin gets him 90%+ of the Black vote, and that is huge in the Democratic Primaries. That's only about 10% of the vote, though, when it comes to the General Election. Likewise, a lot of white Democrats want to vote for a black man (or, presumably woman) out of white guilt. Again, though, these are a minority of Democratic voters. Combined, this is a sizable percentage of the 35% or so of the Population that will always vote Democrat. These are the people that vote in the Primaries, so in a sense being black is a huge leg up in the Primary. It was enough to beat Hillary Clinton in the Primaries, but only barely.

And Obama still hasn't closed the deal with those Hillary voters. Polls indicate that a sizable minority of them may indeed vote for John McCain rather than Barack Obama. This is really bad news for Obama.

After two terms of Republican rule, the Democrat base is very energized, very driven to win. I think that is why Obama's BS snowed so many of them for so long. They wanted to believe. Add that to the color of his skin and what that buys him with the Democrat base, and I think you can explain the Barack Obama campaign to date and why he's the nominee.

That's all politics within the Democratic base. That doesn't translate into strong numbers in the General Election. Barack Obama won slightly over 50% of 35% of the vote. He's got to reach out to the roughly 30% of the voters who actually determine the election, the swing vote (roughly 35% of the vote goes Republican no matter what, too. 35+35=70%, leaving about a 30% swing). Obama will get some of this, but probably not based on skin color. He's already won all the vote he can on skin color alone.

So in a sense it gave him a path to the Nomination, but I don't really believe that it will win him the Presidency. He's going to have to do that on the merits of his arguements. That doesn't look so rosy, at least right now.

Maybe the number of doctors should be doubled.
That would increase supply and lower the cost.

I had an interesting discussion with one of my daughters yesterday. The rather large corporation that she works for has so much work that nearly everyone is working 30 hours a week overtime. They can't easily expand the space that they operate from, so I asked her if they were considering starting a third shift. She told me they were not even considering that because by the time you added up the cost of extra supervisors, extra managers, extra security guards, and all of the insurance and benefits for a new third shift, they would lose money hand over fist. Cheaper to pay the employees they have to work 30 hours a week overtime.

What does that have to do with doubling the supply of doctors? Every doctor has to have a support staff - extra nurses, extra medical assistants, extra secretarial and billing staff. All those people require training and training in some fields - like nursing - is limited and not readily increased.

On national health care. My HR person (not a moonbat) said that we still had to supply private health care when we opened a London office, because the national health service is so bad we wouldn't get anyone to work for us. So England has a two-tier system. Lousy for the poor and those who can't get it from their employers, and good for everyone else.

We'll end up with the same here, but the good tier might be too expensive for anyone but the 5 million and up rich.

4 years undergrad. 4 years medical school. (most waiting to pick up a residency will do 1-2 years internship) 5 years of orthopaedic residency. If then you want sports medicine or total joints, another 1-2 years in fellowship.

I agree with you wholeheartedly and could go on for a few days myself. Already we are seeing large numbers of doctors leaving the profession because of malpractice insurance rates and horrendously slow reimbursements. Try getting an OB-GYN in some parts of the country.

We are also seeing physicians who no longer accept insurance at all. Cash - period.

Socialized medicine is nothing new. It is the norm in every country in Europe, Russia, China, Cuba, Canada. In every single case it is a disaster. Those who are wealthy get the easiest access at home and have the money to go wherever they must for treatment. And then there is everyone else. Folks that think that ER waits are lengthy here because of all the "uninsured" should take a long hard gander at wait times under socialized medicine.

Involuntary euthanasia in Netherlands.

Worse, the Groningen hospital, after which the protocol is named, has already begun to administer the procedure, even without formal legal sanction. To date, Dutch prosecutors have refused to step in. Hey, if we can get rid of society's "deadwood," why let niceties of law or morality get in the way?

Wind Turbines Give Bats the "Bends," Study Finds

Scientists aren't sure why, but bats are attracted to the turbines, which often stand 300 feet (90 meters) high and sport 200-foot (60-meter) blades.

The mammals' curiosity can result in lethal blows by the rotors, which spin at a rate of about 160 miles (260 kilometers) per hour.

But scientist Erin Baerwald and colleagues report that only about half of the bat corpses they found near Alberta, Canada, turbine bases showed any physical evidence of being hit by a blade.

A surprising 90 percent showed signs of internal hemorrhaging—evidence of a drop in air pressure near the blades that causes fatal damage to the bats' lungs.

BAN KILLER WINDMILLS!

Debate on Calif. windmills turns toward bird safety
Conservationists suing to limit 'killer turbines'

By Bobby Caina Calvan, Globe Correspondent | February 22, 2004

ALTAMONT PASS, Calif. -- The first of thousands of giant windmills began sprouting atop this landscape two decades ago. The rolling hills and canyons seemed the ideal place for harnessing the breezes that sweep inland from San Francisco Bay.

But mounting evidence shows otherwise, according to wildlife activists who say scores of golden eagles and hundreds of other raptors -- lured to the area by a bounty of prey -- are falling victim each year to the whirring blades of so-called killer turbines.

One other point to make about health care: there is no crisis. If 47 million people in this country are uninsured, that means over a quarter of a billion people have health insurance. And taking a closer look at the uninsured, roughly a third are illegal aliens, and another third qualify for medicaid and are either too lazy or too stupid to fill out the paperwork. Some crisis.

What is the current average income of an orthopedic surgeon - around $400,000.00?
The supply has been artificially suppressed by graduating/admitting too few doctors, nurses and other paramedics. Increase the supply dramatically by importing qualified foreigners and doubling the number of medical/nursing/pharmacy schools. That will lower the price/cost of medical services substantially.
Of course this will mean much lower incomes for doctors and other health professionals.
What other rational solution is there?

Most abroad are from a bureaucratic level.

Ours are from groups of specialists looking at the dating, and holding to their oath.

Free is great. Your kid has a tummy ache, free chewable tylenol, excellent.

Get really sick, and free is what you get. Free from getting any care.

From the onset of formal diagnosis, there are suggestions for initiating care in reflection of survivability percentages.

What might be 2 weeks here, can easily be 4 months if you are lucky over there.

That is huge when factoring in success.

Heck were all having trouble finding both Nurses & Doc's

That we are. Our doctors have so much red tape to wade through they are often hard put to actually practice medicine at all. And often what they are allowed to do for a patient depends not on the judgement of the doctor but the dictates of the insurance company.

Nursing is a bit of a different problem. The next time that you see a "nurse" wearing a name tag that give her the title "nursing staff" rather than RN, it is likely because the facility uses mostly people who have 6 weeks nurse's aide training - or even no medical training at all. It has become the norm in many facilities for there to be but one real nurse per shift on a given ward, mostly there to shuffle paperwork and take legal responsibility. Why pay a real nurse $25 - 30 an hour when you can pay "nursing staff" $10? Meanwhile, most of our schools of nursing have closed their doors. Nurse's training is very hard to come by in most states.

Somebody upthread noted there was a feature covering Biden eating barbeque.

What happened to all that healthy food with no transfats that was going to be shoved down the conventioneers' throats? Once again, one law for the Inner Party and another for the ordinary Party members, just as in 1984.

I noted that. The DNC backed off of the healthy food thing because it was almost impossible for the caterers to comply with all the rules.

Remember, the Progressives love crises, whether natural or maufactured. Without them, they can never get the public's attention and impose their will upon them. Thus, the Progressives will make a mountain out of flat ground.

Yes, and that's why removing people from the federal income tax rolls is a bad idea. It's easy for vote-whoring politicians to promise people more and more shit when the people they're pandering to know it isn't going to cost them anything.

Interestingly, when people talk about how much our system sucks, it is with regards to the biggies that come up - cancer, heart problems, knee replacements, etc. And how people who aren't insured don't get access to it. But then when they give an example of how great it is in Europe, they say "I went to the doctor and didn't have to fill out any forms or anything.. just went in and they didn't charge me anything" But this is apples and oranges and you would think anyone with half a brain would see that.

Sure, those evil trans-fat eating Rethuglicans will tell you that "they knew all along it was impractical and that is why they didn't even TRY to have all health foods" (that and that Rethugilicans have a real knot in the panties about enforcing correct behavior, what's up with that anyway?) but we know they really secretly want their delegates to eat the fatty food because they're all in the pocket of Big Diet.

Granny, another big problem is the fact that about twenty years ago the powers that be thought it would be a great idea to get rid of LPNs in the acute care setting. Also 3 year diploma nurses, trained onsite at teaching hospitals. Some of the finest nurses I ever worked with treated like garbage. That is when I left nursing.

Yup - though that is not the case in every state. So now, instead of an LPN or diploma RN providing care, we have people parading around as "nursing staff" that have literally 6 weeks of "education" in the medical field.

The rich pay way more than anybody else.

I've seen all sorts of statistics, but never the one I really want to see.
I hear that the top n% families pay m% of the taxes, and it is much more than n%. What I don't hear is what percentage of the US income those families make.
If the top 10% make, say 30% of the income, but pay 20% of the taxes, they probably pay too little; if they pay 50% of the taxes, then they probably pay too much.
And both sides have statistics to make their point.
I'm beginning to think that the numbers aren't as outrageous as both sides say.

In any case, I will say that most of us do get socked, and will really get it with national health care. If for no other reason than we'll pay in our taxes, but we won't get raises to cover it, or to cover what we're actually getting now in company-paid insurance. We'll get the same pay, but with higher taxes (if the French model is at all correct, our burden would go from 30% to at least 40% and possibly 50%)

I think you have to go back to the 70s when the government started managing how many hospital beds were available in any given community ----------> many hospital closures, including most of those run by churches. That is also about the same time that medical insurance became common and just a few years after Medicare was put in place in the 60s.

re: #628 sparrowlake

It is all about the decreasing reimbursement.

As well, it is the insurance companies also.

Think about it this way.

We do quite a bit of viscosupplementation knee injections. The product for inject is pretty expensive, but we have an increasing population of baby boomers with arthritis becoming a problem.

Let's say the material costs us $175.00 per syringe.

We might make $10.00 profit on the product, and another $35.00 - $50.00 on the actual service of the injection.

Factor in the carrying costs for each syringe of this stuff, and it adds up.

Now, do 100 per week, have the insurance company reject 20 of the claims for bogus reasons, pay your office staff to run around trying to rectify the rejections, and pretty soon, you have lost any profitability on the service.

I could go on, and on, and on.

Kudos to the ADL. They got this one right~

ADL Condemns Madonna's Use of Hitler in Concert Photo Montage

New York, NY, August 25, 2008 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today condemned as “inappropriate and offensive” the use by Madonna of an image of Hitler as part of a concert photo montage that also included photos of John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, and Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe.

The images were projected on a screen as Madonna launched her world tour with a live concert in Cardiff, Wales.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director and a Holocaust survivor, issued the following statement:

Comparisons to Hitler have no place in a music concert, or in the presidential campaign.

Whatever Madonna’s political or personal views, it is outrageous to invoke Nazi imagery in the context of John McCain’s candidacy or to make a comment on American political leadership.

It is inappropriate and offensive to compare any current or former world leaders with the man ultimately responsible for the death of six million Jews and the suffering of countless others during the Holocaust. Doing so trivializes the history of the Holocaust and is an insult to the memories of the victims and their families.

More from the "We Heart Ourselves Media Forum" yesterday:

CBS's Bob Schieffer defended the media's reluctance to cover John Edwards's extramarital affair, saying Edwards's candidacy was over and "I don't see that we have time to be fooling with this."

But ABC's George Stephanopoulos noted that "the level of the coverup here was kind of astonishing," and Brokaw expressed concern about this question: "What if it had been Mitt Romney? Would the press have gone after that story more aggressively?"

re: #684 formercorpsman

Sounds like you've got a system that is about as bad or worse as the Canadian model, at least from the doctor's perspective.

716 RememberSekhmet?  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 2:46:11pm

re: #639 Kosh's Shadow

The problem is, when politicians try to "soak the rich," the difference between someone who makes $400,000 a year income from trust funds and $400,000 a year from a salary becomes very plain. In short, the first guy shifts his assets to avoid the new taxes. The second guy, who needs his money closer to hand, is left holding the bag at that bracket.

All the politicians' figuring for what they planned to with the new tax income was based on being able to get their hands on the incomes of people who, like my first example, could easily shift their money out of the way. The deficit has to be made up somewhere, so the tax burden gets redoubled on productive people like my second example. This discourages productive people from pursuing further economic productivity.

re: #639 Kosh's Shadow

Under our "progressive" tax structure, there are numerous tax brackets. A married couple filing a joint return pays 35% of every dollar of taxable income over roughly $300,000. So every single dollar of taxable income over that threshhold is being taxed at a higher rate than what a middle-class or poor person pays.

Tax shelters? Completely overblown. Most of them are a sham, and the people who are stupid enough to invest in them end up getting burned badly. There are tax-exempt bonds that are free from federal income tax (they're still part of your estate for federal estate tax purposes), but they generally pay a very low rate of interest.

By the way, I've never understood the notion that it's fair for a rich person to pay more tax. Why is that "fair"? In reality, a fairer tax would have the poor paying more as they are disproportionate users of government services.

I think they don't actually turn that fast, the problem is the air currents because they are so big? So a mesh wouldn't really help, I think.

Mr. w was in the parking lot of Albertson's, and passed a couple of old moonbats loading their groceries into their Outback. They had a bumpersticker that said, "Nobody Died When Bill Lied." These folks had already annoyed Mr. w, so he leaned closer, pointed to the sticker and said to Mrs. Moonbat, "Yes, but what about Teddy?" She said, "What about him?" Mr. w said, "Mary Jo died for your sins." Mrs. Moonbat turned white and gasped. Mr. Moonbat looked puzzled, she had to explain it to him as Mr. w walked away.

Day 5 of "What Media Bias: yahoo mail"

Additional note: Yahoo mail has disabled the copy function. If I were as egotistical as Obama, I'd declare they were afraid of my five day investigative report.

McCain gets a slight mention two days in a row, as Yahoo/AP carry water for the "McCain's Houses" angle.

Democrats open 2008 national convention.
Clinton, Obama working out deal for roll call vote.
Michelle Obama out to show husband's personal side.
Obama says Clintons are fully on board.
Dems' attack theme: McCain's houses

Bad entertianer?
Your too kind!
She's a HO!
A rich HO,but still a ho!

Damn it! please don't delete this comment charles..
Listen.. I'm not a big Madonna fan.
and i believe in being fair.. Listen my friend..
This woman started out as a dancer and became a world class singer and entertainer. She has the numbers..you don't. period
She is not a HO..and to call her that is like saying A-Rod is a ho because he was successful..he certainly ain't a saint but she is no Ho.. and nether is Madonna...Did she use sex like everyother entertainer to make millions a month? yes..Is it wrong? You ain't god and neither am i..but i don't hear anybody calling the sex pistols HO's so give her her due..She was an attactive girl singing ok songs in the 80's..she has never been accused of being a coke head or selling sex to man as a ho...She is one of a million girls a year that try to make it..and she did..
I don't like her morals..i don't like her politics...
I respect her as a person and never would call her a whore..
She is rich beyond imagination and i feel sorry for her life...But she has worked hard...She is no whore..( somebody better not say..she sure likes sex alot..yea..who doesn't?)
The convention is going to be fun...
i hope i don't get deleted..

re: #476 rawmuse

I like it when they cover their faces. It lets me know which ones will be violent.

I'd love to get in their face and spoil their guerrilla carnival, but I also believe it's borderline irresponsible of the police to accommodate these seditious posers, and I bet they don't like having to, either.

And it's silly to think of her as a whore..
whatever.. I refuse to ever be put in the position of defending Madonna..Some folks think she is over the top in selling sex in music,
lost like Brittany in the 80's.. Whatever...Let's address her career in terms that are fair to all parties..
She is not a whore...

Wow! sorry!
But her "show" if that's what you want to call'em!

Yet you think since she came up through the ranks of dancers to become a "star"!
and is successful in the "entertainment" industry she deserves a
little respect?
My post stands!
No A Rod fan either!
Amoral...Both of 'em!
Next your gonna tell me Alec Baldwin need some respect?

re: #784 HoosierHoops

I think that while Madonna wouldn't call herself a whore, she certainly used sex as a tool to promote herself. Of course there are many women who have done so. The difference is that she seems proud of that aspect of her life. If she uses sex to promote herself, she has to deal with the consequences of people disapproving of that lifestyle.

re: #565 galloping granny

Well OK, but how do we fix this?

re: #639 Kosh's Shadow

I'm beginning to think that the numbers aren't as outrageous as both sides say.

In any case, I will say that most of us do get socked, and will really get it with national health care. If for no other reason than we'll pay in our taxes, but we won't get raises to cover it, or to cover what we're actually getting now in company-paid insurance. We'll get the same pay, but with higher taxes (if the French model is at all correct, our burden would go from 30% to at least 40% and possibly 50%)

But look, if you pay 30% now, say (for round numbers) $30k out of $100k, and then you (plus your employer) pay another $10k/year to insure a family of four, that's $40k, you're just splitting the revenue stream now.

re: #363 formercorpsman

As someone with close to 20 years now in medicine, I can say without any reservation whatsoever, cede more control of the health care system to government, and overall access will diminish.
...
It will be a disaster. The general public has NO idea what the average person in a Doctor's office spends their day doing just to get a patient treated trying to run through the red tape.

Nationalize the system, and will drive a wedge a mile wide between those who can afford better care, and those on the dole.

You draw a dark picture, I understand why, but I'm more optimistic we could get it (closer to) right, something like the current medicare prescription plan, you get a voucher and then spend that, plus cash, for the care you want.

And perhaps I'm more negative than you about the quality of the current system, even if you are insured and can (and do) pay. I already see an immense difference between the quality of care the average guy gets on insurance, and the care the rich guys get for a couple of million out of pocket. And yes, the horror stories from the British system, especially, are rampant, and yes it sounds worse than even my jaundiced view of the current US system.

But also, I suggest, realistically, the politics of the thing will govern as much as the economics, and it is going to happen, so let's just find a way to make it work as best we can.

Well, nobody in the campaigns seems much worked up about this right now anyway, on either side. I'm not sure I could stomach what either candidate would say about it, off the teleprompter.

re: #728 David Simon

Fair tax.

re: #793 itellu3times

The discrepancy you describe plays throughout life in general.

However, allowing the government to find a fix for anything results in an instantaneous increase in cost.

I can agree, the current system can have flaws pointed out, but nothing will ever be perfect, as close as you can is the best to hope for.

I have studied this quite a bit, and I know what I am talking about, being I live this day in and day out.

The interesting part of your description as it relates to the service one gets for paying more, is how Canada addressed such perceived inequality for their own people.

They made it illegal for their own doctors to accept private payment for delivering care.

As you can imagine, once someone has decided to have their knee replaced, the idea of going on a waiting list is absurd. That list exist because of the care being rationed under a socialized system. That is the natural outcome every single time.

Needless to say, some Doctors took the chance, realizing their patients were going across the border for things such as I described, hence, the Canadian economy losing that revenue to the American, thus going against the law, opening their own hospitals, doing the service, and accepting the patients payment for service.

The government attempted to come down on the physician. But how do you square a law like this, when the government does not find it illegal for the citizens to purchase things like alcohol or tobacco? However, it is illegal to purchase your own health care?

Quote from one these physicians:

"We've taken the position that the law is illegal," Dr. Day, 59, says. "This is a country in which dogs can get a hip replacement in under a week and in which humans can wait two to three years."
