Conventional Discussion Thread 2

Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 6:18:07 pm PDT

Tonight’s going to be a Kennedyfest, you’d better just get used to it, culminating in a Ted Kennedy extravaganza you may not be able to believe. Here’s another discussion thread as Caroline takes the podium.

Patriot Ted Kennedy!

Grove City College professor Paul Kengor sheds light on a letter written by KGB head Viktor Chebrikov to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov. The letter is dated May 14, 1983, right as the debate was heating up over Mr. Reagan's proposed deployment of intermediate-range nuclear weapons in Western Europe to counter the Soviets' medium-range rockets in Eastern Europe.

Most Democrats and much of the left were universally opposed to Mr. Reagan's plan, which they argued would lead to nuclear war. Heading the list of critics was Mr. Kennedy, who had, according to the Soviet letter, sent former Sen. John V. Tunney to meet with Kremlin leaders. Chebrikov writes that Mr. Kennedy "charged Tunney to convey the following message, through confidential contacts, to... Andropov."

According to the letter, Mr. Kennedy was concerned with "Reagan's belligerence," which he felt was in part the result of the president's popularity. "The only real threats to Reagan are problems of war and peace and Soviet-American relations," wrote Chebrikov, relaying Mr. Tunney's message. "These issues, according to [Mr. Kennedy], will without a doubt become the most important of the [1984] election campaign."

The letter goes on to say how Mr. Kennedy felt that the Soviets' peaceful intentions were being "quoted out of context, silenced or groundlessly and whimsically discounted." Conversely, Mr. Reagan "has the capabilities to counter any propaganda." In other words, if the letter is to be believed, Mr. Kennedy felt his own president was the real aggressor.

Ted's brother; that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

Caroline is a museum curator, married to an art collector.
That qualifies her to pick the vice president of the US.

Considering that Obama was a community organizer, a back bencher in the Illinois Legislature, and a 1st term Senator, that's about as good as it gets.

The thing to keep in mind is that Ted Kennedy was one of Obama's biggest backers. He was pushing Obama to block Hillary at all costs. That's why the convention is showing the Kennedys all the love.

61 DoubleU  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 6:24:57pm

CBS’s Schieffer Shares How Daughter Was Conceived at ’68 Convention

File this one under "too much information." On Sunday’s Face the Nation, host Bob Schieffer got very personal as he reminisced about attending the 1968 Democratic convention, the first convention he ever attended: “I have to say the first one for me was the most memorable -- not for political but for personal reasons. My first daughter was born nine months to the day after that one. As she later remarked, Chicago in '68 wasn't all fighting in the streets.”

I have sympathy for the Kennedy family but jeez, how much mileage can you get out of that tragedy? It just seems like they go back to that well over and over and over again.

I don't have sympathy for Swimmer or his family. He is dying . . . mostly of old age. Lucky him. His life has not been a net gain for the planet. Starting with killing Mary Jo, he has gone on to support the ideas and philosophies of America's enemies.

I try hard not to wish ill on people, but since he refuses to retire, then his death will have to do.

Maybe he will pull this one out as well.
But I think he is driven by the miserable failure of John F'ing to win the WH, and is trying his best for redemption, in some weird way.

187 pattio  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 6:45:41pm

Does anyone else see this as a grandiose coronation? The Kennedy's bestowing their blessing on "the one". Obama is about to hold forth Excalibur"and will reclaim Camelot. Except "The Lady of the Lake, (looking a lot like Caroline Kennedy) her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Obama, was to carry Excalibur. THAT is why I am your king, ...uh president" Anything with women in pools of water isn't the mental picture one would want to conjure up. I'm sure some youtube wiz could have a field day with that!

"Oh, king eh? Very nice. And how'd you get that, eh? By exploiting the workers. By hanging on to outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society. "

From one of the greatest movies of all time.

188 Devil's Advocate  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 6:46:53pm

217 LC LaWedgie  Tue, Aug 26, 2008 2:20:45am

re: #164 Zim

"Iraq" is not a war that we will ever win, as neither is the "War on Terror" or the "War on Drugs" or the "War on Poverty" or the "War for Unlimited Health Care".

"...Barack Obama will be a commander-in-chief who understands that young Americans in uniform must never be committed to a mistake but always to a mission worthy of their bravery."

All wars are a mistake on someone's part, and bravery is not a factor to judge mission worthiness. Apparently he has not taken the time to reflect on his brother's "mistake" during the Cuban missile crisis (either that or he feels that B.H.O. is a better man than his brother, which I would tend to doubt).

Senator Teddy proves once again that liberals either don't get it (as the deer-in-the-headlights Hollywood type), or worse, choose to ignore it.
