Zombie: Biden to Boxer and Beyond - Celebrity-Hopping Convention Style

Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 7:59:08 am PDT

(Zombie’s reports are cross-posted at Pajamas Media.)

The rumors are true. Political conventions are prime territory for star-chasers and celebrity hounds. In the space of just a few hours, I shook hands with the potential next Vice President (Joe Biden), had lunch with my Senator (Barbara Boxer) and a movie star (Danny Glover), then not long after met Dan Rather and San Francisco Attorney General Kamala Harris, and finally caught a glimpse of Hillary Clinton. And I wasn’t even trying. Real fame addicts have innumerable other opportunities in Denver this week to chum around with lawmakers, legends and superstars.

The Democratic National Convention is like a political Hollywood.

IMG_4787.JPG

I was walking through downtown Denver on Monday when, completely unexpectedly, I ran into Joe Biden at the corner of Lawrence Street and 16th. I saw a crowd of people surrounding someone, and at first, even after getting a glimpse of him, I have to admit I didn’t even know who he was. Partly because he was inside a barbecue shack at that moment, and partly because I’ve been traveling since he was first nominated and haven’t had any time to read the news, so I wasn’t really familiar with what he looked like.

IMG_4792.JPG

But then he came straight toward me and I realized it was the Vice Presidential nominee. Before I knew it, I was shaking his hand. (Now I’ve shaken hands with the entire Democratic ticket — I also unexpectedly shook Obama’s hand during a fundraiser appearance in San Francisco.)

An odd detail: notice the guy with the glasses hovering in the background.

IMG_4791.JPG

He not only looked like the real Joe Biden, he looked exactly like the real Joe Biden. In fact, over the following minutes, some people in the gathering crowd couldn’t tell who was who.

IMG_4803.JPG

As Biden waded through potential voters pressing the flesh, his doppelganger tailed behind (partly obscured by the guy with the green armband in this photo.) It was only later that it dawned on me that he wasn’t just another fan — he must have been Biden’s body double, used as a security measure I suppose.

IMG_4798.JPG

Joe then hopped into the Bidenmobile — an eco-friendly armored Chevy Suburban (coughcough) and was on his way.

IMG_4822.JPG

Minutes later I found myself at a banquet for an AIDS fundraiser, where Danny Glover and Congresswoman Barbara Lee ate lunch with us and then gave speeches.

IMG_4834.JPG

To everyone’s apparent amazement, Barbara Boxer, my Senator, walked into the room right past me and went up to the podium to accept a surprise award. The theme of her speech was: We need a minimum of 60 Democrats in the next Senate.

IMG_4837.JPG

The two Barbaras are good buddies.

IMG_5591.JPG

The next day I swung by to check out “The Big Tent,” an alternative media center co-sponsored by Daily Kos. By chance, the speaker at that particular moment was Dan Rather, former CBS news anchor. I didn’t catch the title of his talk, but the portion I heard seemed to be about media ethics. (Ethics? Dan Rather?)

IMG_5589.JPG

Dan then unleashed his greatest weapon: sarcastic scare quotes!

IMG_5592.JPG

This was the size of his audience. And he used to have an audience of millions every evening at five o’clock. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

IMG_0033.JPG

Later, I was downstairs in the blogger area, using the wi-fi, when Dan came in for a tour and was corralled into giving an interview in front of a “Daily Kos” backdrop.

IMG_5700.JPG

From The Big Tent, my next destination was the “Emily’s List Gala,” with the most star-studded speakers’ list all week: Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and Nancy Pelosi. But as soon as I showed up, I ran into San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris (captured here in an unflattering moment), currently the center of a major controversy over her “humane” policy of extremely lenient sentencing for serious offenders. Despite that, she is widely considered to be a possible nominee for United States Attorney General should Obama get elected.

IMG_5710.JPG

Turns out the Emily’s List event was overbooked and I couldn’t actually get a seat. I watched Hillary through the door briefly, but the security detail forbade photographs. Luckily, her speech was being simulcast on huge screens outside the auditorium, where I got a better view of her anyway. This is as close to Hillary I got that day. (Immediately after the Emily’s List event, she headed over to the Pepsi Center and gave her globally televised big speech.)

The rest of the country must be experiencing a severe celebrity shortage this week, since everyone even halfway famous seems to be in Denver.

These pics remind me of an escapade I had with a n'er-do-well pal of mine, during the 1980 GOP Convention in Detroit. We invaded all the off-limits areas, stole and drank their beer, sat with our legs out the window while a few GOP blatherskites bloviated in Hart Plaza. We were only 21, and didn't much care about security, plus my friend was a con-artist who could bullsh## his way around anyone. How we didn't end up in jail, or face-down being "vetted" by security, I just don't know. Those were different times, I guess.

56 lawhawk  Wed, Aug 27, 2008 8:14:47am

Political junkies have to wait four years for these events. Hollywood gets annual events - Oscars, Golden Globes, Cannes, Sundance - to mix and mingle. Everyone wants to see and be seen - because future political success can be found here. Reputations can be made here. See Obama from 4 years ago to understand how it works. Give a great speech, and you too could be on the cusp of being the nominee.

These are the political Oscars, and if you have a few Hollywood types out and about, it just lends additional luster.

The fact is, the Obama people thought that the Pepsi center was insufficient for their needs, so they opted to spend even more money on a second venue to hold things. Money that the DNC doesn't exactly have. They're putting on a spectacle that most folks will see on TV, which means that they could have built the set anywhere, but didn't. It is hubris. It is ego.

Israel has subs as well, and I'm sure the US . My guess is Iran's won't last long in a shooting war. Especially since these are their first boats, and it is hard to get them exactly right. Israel has German boats, about the quietest Diesel boats around.
We just need to keep track of them near the Straits of Hormuz and, if a torpedo door opens, they go down. Let the Iranians wonder what happened.
We'd already have subs tracking anything near our ships.

re: #133 Kosh's Shadow

Interesting discussion on how the US would re-open the Hormuz in the event of an Iranian closure.

By now it should be clear that we do not believe the US will attack Iran during the Bush administration. With that said, we will not be surprised at all if one day Israel attacks Iran. The question for forward deployed naval forces must always be, if Iran decides to violate just about every possible international law, not to mention piss off just about every major world power except Russia and shut down the Strait of Hormuz, what will be asked of the US Navy to open the strait back up?

...I think that if a President asks whether the Marines can crack open those islands, it isn't in the nature of the Marine Corps to say "we can't do it." So from a theoretical position of a Strait of Hormuz contingency, we see the addition of the Iwo Jima ESG to the Peleliu ESG as a powerful 2 MEU capability that wouldn't wait 3 weeks during maritime traffic disruption before making an assault. Oh you think there are other options? You would be mistaken. Few people realize that there are only six total forcible entry brigades in the entire US military today. 6 means 4 airborne and 2 Marines, and the Marines being the only heavy armored troops. The airborne units are either deployed, recently returned from a deployment, or preparing for a deployment.

That means in that contingency, the only option is the Marines.

The building is one thing, the operating and maintaining are another. I used to work with a fellow who went to Iran (pre-revolution) to instruct ground crews on maintaining the F-14. He had LOTS of horror stories about the intersection of Iranian culture (even under the Shah) and technology.

One of them went like this:

"Put the pins in the seat" I told 'em, "and keep 'em there until the next flight". One guy goes out to a parked plane to work in the cockpit, he climbs up on the ladder, swings his leg in, GRABS THE FACE CURTAIN ON THE SEAT and tries to PULL himself in. WHOOSH goes the seat, the guy shoots about 200 feet in the air, and splats on the tarmac.

Israel has good boats and needs more. In warm shallow water small diesel boats have a definite advantage. I am not panicking but I do not think that we should get cocky and laugh at this possibility.

And riot cops are authorized to shove. Have you heard the phrase, "Read the Riot Act?"

They have to do what they must to keep the peace.

269 Kenneth  Wed, Aug 27, 2008 9:04:47am

re: #247 Cognito

There is still an escalation of force set forth -- a series of steps for dealing with someone who disobeys. Smashing her with your baton and screaming "Back it up, BITCH!" doesn't come until after the "I can't handle this job" step, but just before the "I'm under investigation," step.

You're talking nonsense. Again. Riot cops are authorized to use force in controlling crowds. The people were told to move away, they did not, and force was applied. That's lawful crowd control in a riot situation.

Some of the protesters have already been trained as soon as they see that, they fall down and start screaming and yelling whether you hit them or not.

From the Weekly Standard, Celebrities for McCain:

[Robert] Duvall then picks up our conversation from where we left it before the interruption. He is incensed by comments Gore Vidal made about McCain back in June. Vidal had questioned McCain's heroism. "Who started this rumor that he was a war hero? Where does that come from, aside from himself? About his suffering in the prison war camp?"

Duvall doesn't think much of Vidal, whom he called "an American icon-slash-dilettante." It's not only John McCain who could kick Vidal's ass.

"His 96 year-old mother could beat the crap out of Gore Vidal with her shoe," Duvall says. "And you can quote me on that."

This is actually a CRITICAL issue.

How Obama acts as nominee is a reasonable indication of how he might act as President. He's currently asking the Justice Dept to intervene here specifically to silence political criticism directed against him.

Is it a stretch to think he might do the exact same thing when he is POTUS and has more influence over the Justice Dept? In fact, he's ACTUALLY trying to do exactly what the Dems have long been accusing President Bush of doing, namely using the DOJ for his own political ends.

They always do this. Republicans are at a huge disadvantage. Democrats constantly decry the Republicans' "Rovian" tactics of fear-mongering and slander. Well, Republican have to do that; no one else will do it for them. The Democrats have most of the media, Hollywood, and the music industry to do their dirty work for them. Republicans have only themselves.

re: #349 Athos

It's so very ironic that the Democrats actually are doing the things that they accuse the Republicans of doing. Perhaps that's part of their self-justification to legitimize the action - we think they are doing it or have done it, therefore, we are entitled to do it.

In fact, he's ACTUALLY trying to do exactly what the Dems have long been accusing President Bush of doing, namely using the DOJ for his own political ends.

re: #351 buzzsawmonkey

By the way, as far as the "bitch" language is concerned, the verbal shock may well be intended as a means for avoiding the necessity of a physical response. That is to say, if a police person says to you, "Back off, bitch!" you response is not going to be, "This is nice Officer Friendly, whom I can reason with and perhaps charm." Your response is more likely to be, "Here is an angry and unpredictable person whose way I better get out of so I don't piss him off."

If the protester takes that no-brainer cue, he or she can save himself an unnecessary physical confrontation. And the officer can avoid having to respond physically.

So before anyone gets their panties in a twist about harsh or inappropriate language, consider that the language is actually a first line of attack which is intended to avoid the need for physical response.

Yes, However, I must say that logic has never worked with my wife. While I would never call her a bitch, the few times I have gotten mad at her, I find that harsh language usually does not work well. At least that is what I think, but I usually don't remember all that much after waking up in the hospital?

True, and civility goes both ways. I have a slight problem with the phrase "back it up, bitch". "Back it up" is fine, but no matter how much the adrenalyn is flowing, it is unprofessional at all times to call someone "bitch". If she lunged, then she got what she deserved by being pushed back. The officer has a right to self-defense as well.

This deserves a lot more attention than it is receiving:

Don’t panic if we disappear briefly…
By Brett on Admin

Harry’s Place may be removed (or rather have it’s DNS disabled) after a ‘complaint’ to the company that our domain name is registered with.

We assume after threats were made on the weekend that this ‘complaint’ originates from Jenna Delich or her supporters.

Though we have not yet seen the complaint submitted, we assume it runs along the lines that pointing out that Ms Delich linked to the website of a known neo-Nazi figure and former Ku Klux Klan leader is defamatory.

This is extraordinary since Ms Delich has not denied that she circulated links to David Dukes website. There would be no point since the evidence is in the public domain.

Nevertheless, a malicious complaint has been made to the company hosting our DNS.

We would like to assure readers of Harry’s Place that we are doing everything we can to prevent a disruption, but that - of course - we will not concede any ground. We have posted nothing defamatory, and we stand by the information we have supplied.

ISPs often run scared of UK libel law and malicious complaints are thus common. Sadly, it is a well known - and usually successful - way of censoring websites which publish truths that they’d rather not be generally known.

We ask our readers and supporters in the meantime to publish this information as widely as possible. The disgraceful tactic of dishonest and malicious complaining should not be allowed to succeed.

Those on the UCU list, please also make this know there.

Please spread the word.

If we go down, email us at harryblog at gee mail dot com for updates.

UPDATE: For those who can still see us - we’ve put up an archive of the Delich-related material here, which we will use to post updates on this saga:

re: #335 Iron Fist

Interestingly, when Neil Kinnock, whose speech was later pinched by sen. Biden, was leader of the Labour Party, he and all of Labour were so certain they'd win the 1992 election tat they ahd a huge, televised, festive, glorious final rally - very triumphant. They lost.
The dems don't seem to go in for historical lessons - perhaps John McCain and his team are a bit wiser, and do what the then Prime Minister and Tory party leader, John Major did:

"Major's Conservatives were widely expected to lose the 1992 election to Neil Kinnock's Labour Party. Major took his campaign onto the streets, famously delivering many addresses from an upturned soapbox as in his Lambeth days. This "common touch" approach stood in contrast to the Labour Party's seemingly slicker campaign and it chimed with the electorate, along with hard-hitting negative campaign advertising focusing on the issue of Labour's approach to taxation. Major won a second period in office, albeit with the small parliamentary majority of just 21 seats. Despite this Major won over 14 million votes, the highest popular vote recorded by a British PM."
(My emphasis...)

A member of the British academic union that voted to reintroduce a boycott of Israeli academia has posted a link on the union's Web site to an anti-Semitic article on the Web site of former Klu Klux Klan leader David Duke.

Jenna Delich, a member of the University and College Union, posted a message on the UCU Web site's activist list with a link to the article.

Delich's message was in support of a colleague who backs the boycott call. It reads: "John, in support to your link this may be a long but also an interesting reading: [Link: www.davidduke.com...] No comment necessary. The facts are speaking for themselves, Jenna."

The article, "Racism, not Defense, at the Heart of Israeli Politics," is an attack on the "Israeli oligarchs" and was circulated to hundreds of the union's active members. It was written by a 9/11 conspiracy theorist named Joe Quinn.

In the article he writes: "There is much evidence to warrant an in-depth investigation of the role played by agents of Israel in the 9/11 attacks. Yet the ubiquitous, tiresome and completely baseless threat of being labelled "anti-Semitic‚" for criticizing the actions of the Israeli government effectively prevents all but the most courageous from following the leads. Coincidence? We think not...

"Just what level of power do Israeli interests wield in the halls of power in the US that any investigation into Israeli spying activities on US soil against US intelligence agencies can be so completely quashed? Would this constitute a level of power and control that would allow those interests to carry off a terrorist attack like 9/11 and have it blamed on 'Arab terrorists?'"

Quinn links to the Web site of convicted Holocaust-denier David Irving saying: "On the morning of 9/11 and just as the WTC towers were crumbling, the five Israelis were caught doing the 'happy dance' as they videotaped the Twin Towers fall." The piece closes with the claim: "Either someone does something about these sick psychopaths, or they, and their kind in Washington and around the world, will destroy us all."

The link was discovered by Engage, a group of left-wing trade unionists and academics active in the anti-boycott campaign.

Dr. David Hirsh, lecturer at University of London's Goldsmiths College and editor of the Engage Web site, said: "Since 2003 academic unions have been dominated by a campaign to exclude Israelis, and nobody else, from UK campuses. We have warned the [UCU] general-secretary on numerous occasions that this campaign has imported anti-Semitic ways of thinking into our union, she either didn't understand or didn't care. That the union is now circulating racist material should be understood as a manifestation of its institutional anti-Semitism; it cannot be written off as yet another random accident."

Hirsh said Delich's e-mails on the activist list had already been the subject of two formal complaints to the union. However, the UCU judged that the evidence was unpersuasive.

Janet Reno, as AG was the head of the Justice Department. Of course, the Clinton's also placed Jamie Gorelick (creator of the wall of separation that played such a prominent role in not defending this country from terrorism) in Justice to keep Janet from messing up too much.

Firstly, the "ass kicking" portion was a reference to someone else's post, not mine.

Secondly, and finally for me: I'll wait until the city of Denver finishes its investigation.

I agree with you. I don't like the Code Pink ladies. They are unamerican nitwits. But as tough as the police job is they can not assault citizens. I am not saying there was no provocation, but was it sufficient?

"That policeman is way, way out of line.

He can't just make this crap up as he goes."

Mm-hmm.

No leaping to conclusions there, no sirree.

That's what it looks like to me. Sorry.

Regardless, I'll set aside my opinion until the city renders its own.

That's interesting. I really don't expect McCain to win in a landslide, but I do think that the election is now his to lose. Biden was a terrible mistake on Obama's part. He's got to be praying (to Himself:-) that McCain fucks up his VP pick.

Thzat might happen. A lot is riding on what McCain does over the next few days.

Well I just hope he does NOT pick Hutchinson from TX. She is to old and not particularly stimulating. McCain look to the far North!
