An Ego for the Ages

With the news that Barack Obama will be giving his acceptance speech on a set that looks like an ancient Greek temple, Political Inquirer posts this classic Photoshop by Tennyson Hayes: An Ego for the Ages in a Classical Setting.

I saw a "set" this morning on TV that was identified as the place that Barrack would address the masses. It looked more like a portion of the white house than a greek temple.

Only one Dkos diary on this...
Please, Obama, no Greek Temple

[Update:] There are a lot of people ridiculing me for this diary and that's fine. People are certainly entitled to their opinion and I'll recognize that I may be oversensitive. But also understand that the frame is already beginning. MSNBC, ABC, and Reuters have already made the link. It will become the narrative before Obama even gives his speech. The republicans will have an ad out Friday morning hitting him for the celebrity theme and there will be specific mentions of the stage.

If you think I'm over-reacting that's fine, just accept there will be over-reactions from the media, too - and that it will become an issue.

The Messiah needs a temple. Behead those who suggest otherwise.

Protestors update...

Overnight the City of Denver fenced off Civic Center Park. This weekend is an event called "A Taste of Colorado," which will have about a hundred food booths set up in the park.

We, Recreate 68 ALSO has a permit to use the park TODAY for some activities.

This was obviously a clever move by the city to mitigate any protesting. I don't know the legalities, but Recreate 68 is pissed.

It may get interesting, or dangerous, tonight.

Ego for sure, but I'm sure his staffers are also going to try and claim that it will show Obama as Mr. Smith - going to Washington, and attempting to link Obama to the common man - figuring that having Obama appear with the stately columns behind him it will be like the steps of Congress.

The problem of course, is that this is all a stage show - expensive and overblown and overdrawn given the DNC money woes. Why spend even more on a second set that will be used for Obama's speech rather than the set at the Pepsi Center? Is the Pepsi Center insufficient to get his message across?

Does this greek stage go deeper at showing obama's psyche? Is this some sort of Oedipal complex manifesting itself?

Yes. Narcissism is a form of arrested Oedipal complex. Barack Obama spoke about his mother in surprisingly sensual terms ("white as milk"). He resented the way his father abandoned her ("punished with a child") when Obama was young. Growing up, Obama has filled this void with one older angry man after another (Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers, Frank Davis).

Oedipus for sure.

I think the obama people also didn't factor in how this could also smack ego and elitism. He's elevating himself to a god-like figure. It's hard to blame Sen. Clinton for being bitter. Here she is, the smartest human ever, PLUS she spent all those years standing loyally behind Bill Clinton wearing uncomfortable pantyhose (I mean Hillary was, not Bill) (although there are rumors), PLUS she went to the trouble and expense of acquiring a legal residence in New York State so she could be a senator from there, PLUS she assembled a team of nuclear-physicist-grade genius political advisors, PLUS she spent years going around to every dirtbag community in America explaining in detail her 23-point policy solutions for every single problem facing the nation including soybean blight. And after all that, she loses the nomination to a guy who has roughly the same amount of executive governmental experience as Hannah Montana. Hillary is like: "Are you KIDDING me?''

Worth the read.

re: #195 buzzsawmonkey

Last night's speeches seemed to be all about malaise. I listened to Hillary as long as I could stand it, but in the end I realized, as I switched off, that though she intended to sound inspiring there was nothing, nothing whatever, that was inspirational for the country as a whole.

There was whining, and recrimination, and nay-saying aplenty; there were promises to give all sorts of goodies to all sorts of disadvantaged, or allegedly disadvantaged, or simply unfortunate people. But for me--someone who doesn't make nearly enough money, but is plugging along doing what he can without wanting or expecting a government handout--there was nothing at all. And nothing which offered a unifying vision of the country for all of us, handout-takers and non-handout takers alike.

The Democrats truly believe, I think, that this alternation of negative whining with giveaway promises is "inspiring." That is, perhaps, even more dismal than the litany itself. The question before the country is whether this endless focusing on the donut hole is considered inspiring by the bulk of the American public, at least as measured by Electoral College votes. I profoundly pray that it is not.

Beautifully said, and says exactly what I couldn't say as well in words of my own.

But he's more like something from Lovecraft:
Nyarlathotep

And it was then that Nyarlathotep came out of Egypt. Who he was, none could tell, but he was of the old native blood and looked like a Pharaoh. The fellahin knelt when they saw him, yet could not say why. He said he had risen up out of the blackness of twenty-seven centuries, and that he had heard messages from places not on this planet. Into the lands of civilisation came Nyarlathotep, swarthy, slender, and sinister, always buying strange instruments of glass and metal and combining them into instruments yet stranger. He spoke much of the sciences – of electricity and psychology — and gave exhibitions of power which sent his spectators away speechless, yet which swelled his fame to exceeding magnitude. Men advised one another to see Nyarlathotep, and shuddered. And where Nyarlathotep went, rest vanished; for the small hours were rent with the screams of nightmare. Never before had the screams of nightmare been such a public problem; now the wise men almost wished they could forbid sleep in the small hours, that the shrieks of cities might less horribly disturb the pale, pitying moon as it glimmered on green waters gliding under bridges, and old steeples crumbling against a sickly sky.

For arrogance there are always these lyrics.

[SOLDIERS]
One, two! One, two!

[MILES]
We not only fought, but we won, too!

[SOLDIERS]
One, two! One, two!
Left, right! Left, right!

[MILES]
There's none of the enemy left, right?

[SOLDIERS]
Right! Left...right...right? Left?

[MILES]
Halt!

[PSEUDOLUS]
Hail, Miles Gloriosus.
Welcome to Rome.
Your bride awaits you.

[MILES]
My bride...
My bride!
My bride!
I've come to claim my bride,
Come tenderly to crush her against my side.
Let haste be made!
I cannot be delayed:
There are lands to conquer, cities to loot and peoples to degrade.

[SOLDIERS]
Look at those arms!
Look at that chest!
Look at them!

[MILES]
Not to mention the rest.
Even I am impressed!
My bride!
My bride!
Come, bring to me my bride.
My lust for her no longer can be denied.
Convey the news!
I have no time to lose:
There are towns to plunder, temples to burn and women to abuse.

[SOLDIERS]
Look at that foot!
Look at that heel!
Mark the magnificent muscles of steel!

[MILES]
I am my ideal!
I, Miles Gloriosus,
I, slaughterer of thousands,
I, oppressor of the meek,
Subduer of the weak,
Degrader of the Greek,
Destroyer of the Turk,
Must hurry back to work.

[MILES & ROMANS:]
I/he, Miles Gloriosus,

[SOLDIERS]
A man among men!

[MILES & ROMANS:]
I/he, paragon of virtue,

[SOLDIERS]
With sword and with pen!

[MILES]
I, in war the most admired,
In wit the most inspired,
In love the most desired,
In dress the best displayed--
I am a parade!

[SOLDIERS]
Look at those eyes, cunning and keen,
Look at the size of those thighs, like a mighty machine!

[PSEUDOLUS]
Those are the mightiest thighs that I ever have theen!
I mean...

[MILES]
My bride!
My bride!
Inform my lucky bride:
The fabled arms of
Miles are open wide.
Make haste!
Make haste!
I have no time to waste:
There are shrines
I should be sacking,
Ribs I should be cracking,
Eyes to gouge and booty to divide.
Bring me my bride!

Cool. Let me know when the finished film is released. ;)

There are a lot of obstacles to overcome. The most likely outcome is that the screenplay will be archived with the fan fiction on the FREELANCE TRAVELLER website.

Basically I've reached the beginning of act three on the project. I can send you a PDF file of the current craft if you're interested.

Citing from remote and unchecked memory:
The standard Roman toga was plain white and called "toga virilis" - [toga of manhood]. A The "toga protecta" (toga of protection) had a red-purple stripe to ward off evil spirits.

The toga protecta was worn by a boy up to the age of 12, and then in a formal ceremony he assumed the toga virilis. (A kind of Bar Mitzvah in Latin).

But if he became a senator, then he went back to the toga protecta.

By putting out these ads, day after day, on different topics, the McCain campaign has gotten well inside Obama's OODA Loop. It takes one to two days for Obama's campaign to respond, by which time the next ad is out, coming at him from yet another angle. This is how McCain has taken the initiative away from Obama even during the Democratic coronation convention.

The temple set is a bad facsimile of a Greek temple with Doric straight columns and flat capitals capped with a stripped down Doric entablature with Triglyphs. Definitely Doric. Not at all like the White House which has ornate ionic influenced columns.

However, the Greeks would never have made a curved façade either.

It's like bad Albert Speer architecture who was very into Greek Doric orders and creating the image of a long lasting empire.

If the words "sharp" or "peppery" or "somewhat like mustard greens," don't come to mind, then you probably haven't eaten arugula -- or maybe you have eaten it, but thought you were eating actual mustard greens.

It's in the botanical family Brassicaceae, which makes it something of a cousin to cabbage, but unlike actual cabbage, it's not one of the eleventy-umpteen cultivars of the wild mustard species Brassica oleracea.

The toga protecta was worn by a boy up to the age of 12, and then in a formal ceremony he assumed the toga virilis. (A kind of Bar Mitzvah in Latin).

I may misremember some of the details, but the principle is obvious.

Heh. Clio was the Muse of History, but it was the mother of Clio and the other Muses, namely Mnemosyne, who was the Goddess of Memory. And your memory is just slightly off.

The Roman man-wrap with the reddish/purple border was called a toga praetexta, not a toga protecta. The adjectival/participial forms praetexta and protecta do ultimately come from the same root verb tegere, which means "to shelter" or "to cover." But the derived form praetexta simply means "having a border" or "fringed" or "decorated on the edges," without implying "protection."

However, your other points were correct -- young boys wore a toga praetexta with a red/purple border, much like elected officials did, but upon reaching manhood, a boy traded in the toga praetexta for a plain-white toga virilis.

If he ran for public office, he would don a toga candida -- literally meaning "bright-white toga" -- which was a toga virilis that had been treated with the strongest bleaching chemicals available and then dusted with chalk or talc to make it as gleamingly white as they could manage.

And if he were elected to certain public offices, he would wear the toga praetexta again, as Clio said.

(Former high-school Latin supergeek here.)
