Conventional Discussion Thread 6

Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 1:58:00 pm PDT

They’re going to take the roll call of delegates soon, and we’ll see whether Hillary’s last minute pleas succeeded in convincing many hardcore holdouts to join the Obamatons.

Also, several radical left wing groups have sponsored a concert by Rage Against My Allowance the Machine, going on now.

Excuse me, but I'm confused. Hot Air has a story about the roll call actually taking place at the hotels. All they would be doing, then, is to read off the votes. Are they actually going to read them off a sheet, state by state? Or are they going to read just a summary?

Wow. Talk about hiding what your hands are doing.

Charles, I do hope that at some point this evening you might consider a post about the ABC reporter arrested for taking photos on a public sidewalk of Democratic Senators and their donors.

It's bigger than one reporter. It's indicative of a trend -- a threat -- emerging in the Obama mentality. Same goes for his attempt to use the DoJ to suppress the Ayers advertisment. Same goes for him tossing the New Yorker writer off the campaign trail, following the (ironically) unflattering cover. And so forth.

It's a big deal, I believe. Perhaps the biggest of the moment.

From Geraghty at NRO:

Dang, dang, dang. No Springsteen concert after Obama's acceptance speech. We won't be seeing The Rising, for a guy who, it turns out, was actually Born in the USA.

And it would have been such a nice closing, after the convention opened with Michelle Obama's Brilliant Disguise.

I wasn't sure what to expect last night before the speech. After it, I was fairly certain that the influence of the Clinton family was almost over. Her only chance to continue is to play nice and hope for Obama's defeat, then stage a comeback for 2012. Seems obvious now, but I really thought there was a chance that her speech would be thinly veiled disappointment or contempt of the newcomer, especially after Gloria Allred pulled that gagged Schism stunt yesterday.

That sounds like utter and transparent rubbish. He trespassed by taking photos they didn't want him to take, and his "failure to follow lawful orders" sounds like he didn't hand over his film/cards.

If the sidewalk was in fact owned by the hotel (which I also think is doubtful), the public right of way in such places is, of course, revocable. If you walk into the lobby of the nearest Ritz-Carlton, you're not trespassing. If you make a scene, are asked to leave, and refuse, you ARE trespassing.

Here is song for RATM, Sell Out!

you're gonna go to the record store
you're gonna give 'em all your money
radio plays what they want you to hear
they tell me it's cool but I just don't believe it...

sell out, with me oh yea, sell out, with me tonight
record company's gonna give me lots of money
and everything's gonna be (all right).

The article says that the police said the sidewalk was owned by the hotel. Somehow I doubt that.

Doesn't sound likely. If that is true, I wonder if I can just bar people from using the sidewalk in front of my house.
They got embarrased & some heavy hitter told the cop to take care of it & he went all Nazi.

I once saw some people pouring out of a Rage Against the Machine concert. They could have rivaled Rage Boy and his ilk on a post Friday prayer session with their anger. It was scary.

Good observation & analysis.

Aren't most of us in the West over our teenage rage phase? Haven't we got better tools?

Sorry but superannuated rock musicians and their fans gross me out--I have moved on from rock & roll and teenage wasteland.

You are so right.

Obama is a passive aggressive Chicago thug.

CHANGE will come to mean the quarter you are handed to call your attorney after getting booked for your politcal crime of the day.

Riffing on this further, remember the language out of Michelle earlier in the campaign - "Barack will make you work"?

Holiday in Cambodia.

That is not the same thing as the public sidewalk outside of the hotel, since it is impossible to pass the hotel without walking on the sidewalk.

re: #64 galloping granny

Even if the sidewalk was owned by the hotel, the second that he was out in the road they had no right to have him arrested. And in most states, if you allow public passage across your property on a regular basis you lose the right to claim that the property is "private" - it becomes a public way.

That's only for portions of the property which have become public access by right. The hotel could own the sidewalk, but they don't own the right of way, and would have to get a permit to block access temporarily.

If you have a path across an acreage that has been used by people who do not own the property for many years, like a shortcut, you cannot subsequently block access or put it off limits. But people can't go traipsing all over the property, that is definitely trespass.

If you walk into the lobby of the nearest Ritz-Carlton, you're not trespassing. If you make a scene, are asked to leave, and refuse, you ARE trespassing.

But revocation of an easement for general public use is not something you can effect without notifying the individual(s) before hand, and generally requires demonstration of some basis if challenged. Not that any of that prevented the cops from taking the guy into custody.

BTW - What ever happened to all that "truth to power" shit that Democrats like to blurb all of the time.
