Conventional Discussion Thread 6

Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 1:58:00 pm PDT

They’re going to take the roll call of delegates soon, and we’ll see whether Hillary’s last minute pleas succeeded in convincing many hardcore holdouts to join the Obamatons.

Also, several radical left wing groups have sponsored a concert by Rage Against My Allowance the Machine, going on now.

Excuse me, but I'm confused. Hot Air has a story about the roll call actually taking place at the hotels. All they would be doing, then, is to read off the votes. Are they actually going to read them off a sheet, state by state? Or are they going to read just a summary?

Wow. Talk about hiding what your hands are doing.

Charles, I do hope that at some point this evening you might consider a post about the ABC reporter arrested for taking photos on a public sidewalk of Democratic Senators and their donors.

It's bigger than one reporter. It's indicative of a trend -- a threat -- emerging in the Obama mentality. Same goes for his attempt to use the DoJ to suppress the Ayers advertisment. Same goes for him tossing the New Yorker writer off the campaign trail, following the (ironically) unflattering cover. And so forth.

It's a big deal, I believe. Perhaps the biggest of the moment.

From Geraghty at NRO:

Obama Was Born To Run Without Springsteen

Dang, dang, dang. No Springsteen concert after Obama's acceptance speech. We won't be seeing The Rising, for a guy who, it turns out, was actually Born in the USA.

And it would have been such a nice closing, after the convention opened with Michelle Obama's Brilliant Disguise.

I wasn't sure what to expect last night before the speech. After it, I was fairly certain that the influence of the Clinton family was almost over. Her only chance to continue is to play nice and hope for Obama's defeat, then stage a comeback for 2012. Seems obvious now, but I really thought there was a chance that her speech would be thinly veiled disappointment or contempt of the newcomer, especially after Gloria Allred pulled that gagged Schism stunt yesterday.

That sounds like utter and transparent rubbish. He trespassed by taking photos they didn't want him to take, and his "failure to follow lawful orders" sounds like he didn't hand over his film/cards.

Let's be honest....there really wasn't any diversity at the time of the Constitution. The fact that the Chinese, Africans, and English weren't represented at its creation is enough to prove its being antiquated. We also cannot forget that it was created without the input of Womyn. How can we truly follow such a racist, sexist, and un diversse document, and otherwise expect it to represent the modern make up of the American people? Lastly, it cannot be ignored that this so-called Constitution was accepted without approval of the World community.

If the sidewalk was in fact owned by the hotel (which I also think is doubtful), the public right of way in such places is, of course, revocable. If you walk into the lobby of the nearest Ritz-Carlton, you're not trespassing. If you make a scene, are asked to leave, and refuse, you ARE trespassing.

That is not the same thing as the public sidewalk outside of the hotel, since it is impossible to pass the hotel without walking on the sidewalk.

re: #64 galloping granny

Even if the sidewalk was owned by the hotel, the second that he was out in the road they had no right to have him arrested. And in most states, if you allow public passage across your property on a regular basis you lose the right to claim that the property is "private" - it becomes a public way.

That's only for portions of the property which have become public access by right. The hotel could own the sidewalk, but they don't own the right of way, and would have to get a permit to block access temporarily.

If you have a path across an acreage that has been used by people who do not own the property for many years, like a shortcut, you cannot subsequently block access or put it off limits. But people can't go traipsing all over the property, that is definitely trespass.

But revocation of an easement for general public use is not something you can effect without notifying the individual(s) before hand, and generally requires demonstration of some basis if challenged. Not that any of that prevented the cops from taking the guy into custody.

BTW - What ever happened to all that "truth to power" shit that Democrats like to blurb all of the time.

If the hotel in question is set back from the street, with their own parking lot around it, and the sidewalk is quite clearly completely on the hotel property, only surrounding the building, I still believe they are wrong to have arrested the press.

But the difference between that situation and a sideway along a public street will be important to some.

That, Sir, is a lie, a damned lie, and quite possibly hides a statistic. There isn't a redneck alive who would so mistreat a half full beer bottle.

Now an empty, sure, we can talk about that.

I will argue the volume of beer in the bottle at the time of the fight is likely proportional to the volume of beer in the Redneck.

To put this in a historical perspective, this is like the Stanlinists vs. the Trotskyites. There will be a major purge in the democratic party after McCain wins the next election by about 3 percentage points.

On the bright side Hillary will set up special re-education camps for the Kossites and the Huffington crowd. Does Bill Richardson have a safe house in Mexico he can go to?

The sad thing was that after prior disasters the Democrats created the Super-Delegate system to restore order to the party. The idea was to get the professionals back in charge so disasters from the outside can't take over. Now they have a convention in which the voters selected the more conventional candidate but the professionals are forcing the more likely to lose insurgent down the party's throat. The explanation is that Obama is a stand in for the Kennedy organization which sees itself as the true establishment threatened by the Clinton outsiders.

re: #514 lifeofthemind

The sad thing was that after prior disasters the Democrats created the Super-Delegate system to restore order to the party. The idea was to get the professionals back in charge so disasters from the outside can't take over. Now they have a convention in which the voters selected the more conventional candidate but the professionals are forcing the more likely to lose insurgent down the party's throat. The explanation is that Obama is a stand in for the Kennedy organization which sees itself as the true establishment threatened by the Clinton outsiders.

I would buy that. Teddy sure tried hard to pass him off as the black JFK. The funny thing is that there are a couple of Kennedy children in politics that could easily step into the JFK shoes.

That would be either our governor or one of our senators. They both look and act like used car salesmen. Burt really they are "farmers" with thousands of acres which are farmed by management teams and the governor took a leaf out of Kerry's book and married money.

Someone better should have seized this moment for them.

The only job Hillary would take from Barack is SCOTUS... all of the others serve at the will of the president. He'd have her on a string, and she'd have to jump when he asked. He would be sure to give her a bunch of no-win tasks to do... just to make her look foolish, to destroy her bid for 2012. She'd have much more power and independence by staying in the senate.

SCOTUS or nothing for her... Bill is another story.

Largest protest of week marching toward Pepsi Center

As the Rage Against the Machine concert let out at the Denver Coliseum at 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon the unauthorized march embarked toward the site of the Democratic National Convention, led by a group called Iraq Veterans Against the War.

The veterans, who were dressed in uniform, did not have an official permit for the parade.

Ain't gonna happen. Hillary will never be a SCOTUS. She can't even be vetted by any reasonable standard. If Obama makes a recess appointment of Hillary, he is doomed. If somehow Hillary makes it, she will be impeached just like Samuel Chase. It may happen sooner if there is revolution 3.0 in the US if Obama even tried to appoint her.

Good Evening Lizards. I haven't been here today and not sure if this has been posted. If anyone else is tired of all the Bush bashing this week and lest we forget or start to believe all the dems blattering...we might want to remind ourselves what kind of President we already have in the White House, and if we could only be so lucky to get another one.
************************
The Pre-Bush Situation and His First Eight Months

A year before Bush took office, the stock market peaked and subsequently declined 8% by the end of 2000. The last four fiscal quarters under President Clinton showed steadily declining GDP growth rates of 4.8, 3.5, 2.4, and 1.9 percent, respectively. When Bush took office, the US Government was still operating under the fiscal budget signed by President Clinton, and would remain so for more than another eight months. Within six weeks of Bush being sworn in, the economy was officially in recession.

On the defense front, President Bush was handed a smoldering crisis that had been brewing throughout President Clinton's two terms.

The World Trade Center was bombed by Islamists in 1993, killing six and injuring 1,042.
We lost 18 US Special Ops forces in Mogadishu while fighting Islamist allies of Osama bin Laden.
Osama bin Laden declared war against the U.S. in his fatwa of 1996.
The Khobar Towers used to house our servicemen in Saudi Arabia were bombed by Islamists in 1996, killing 19 US servicemen.
Our embassies in Tanzania and Kenya were bombed in 1998 by bin Laden supported Islamists, killing at least 223 and injuring thousands.
Pakistan and India both successfully tested nuclear warheads in 1998, to the surprise of our CIA.
The USS Cole was bombed in 2000 by Islamists, killing 17 US sailors.
In Israel, the Oslo accords had broken down, the PLO had rejected the most generous "peace for land" deal ever offered, and the intifada was back in business by the end of 2000.
Nations pursuing nuclear weapon capability (beyond Pakistan and India, who had it by 1998) were North Korea, Iran, Iraq and Libya.
