Jim Geraghty at the Campaign Spot notices a rhetorical parallel:

"Bill Clinton, tonight: "People the world over have always been more impressed by the power of our example than the example of our power."

The Sphinx, from the comic book comedy Mystery Men:
"To learn my teachings, I must first teach you how to learn."
"When you care what is outside, what is inside cares for you."
"He who questions training only trains himself at asking questions."

47 tradewind  Wed, Aug 27, 2008 7:52:04pm

Here's the thing Biden doesn't get: well, one of 'em....
When you praise a man as your friend and tout his courage and honor, and then proceed to trash him, you sound untrustworthy and backstabbing unless you are a very talented orator..... much more talented than Joe.
He is now inserting himself into the minds of the public as a sleazebag who gossips about his old friends to ingratiate himself with the new kid in town.
Not good politics, not good television.

You don't understand. The dems have to blame everything that's bad on the administration, and make McCain an extension of it. And they try to make everything that's good bad and play the same blame game.

According to their entire campaign strategy, absolutely nothing good has happened in the last 8 years.

re: #55 Charles

Why did the world trust us in 1998 when President Clinton signed into law the Iraq Liberation Act, which made it official US policy to overthrow Saddam Hussein's regime. President Bush acted on that law, and didn't just pay lip service.

Of course, had we listened to Biden and split Iraq along tribal and/or ethnic lines, we would have had a civil war of epic proportions and a conflict that would have forced the US from the region. We didn't listen to Biden then, and we shouldn't now.

151 mich-again  Wed, Aug 27, 2008 7:56:52pm

Biden was all for splitting up Iraq into 3 chunks. He was the Champion of the Partition Plan and he said it was the only way to quell the violence in Iraq.

Turns out he was wrong on a grand scale. I wonder if any reporters will ask him if he still wants to push that plan in a Obama administration.

And then a follow up... Why not and when did you first realize your idea was so dumb.

It's a satire, by the guys that did Airplane. It's about a Michael Moore type film maker who is visited by the ghost of famos american heros and politicians. Very anti-liberal.

It's coming out Oct 3 (same weekend as "Beverly Hills Chihuahuas"). Since Oliver Stone's "W" film comes out 22 Oct, I'm guessing the libs think they have the upper-hand.

Joe Biden is right: We need more than a good soldier, we need a leader with the experience and judgment to serve as commander in chief from day one. That leader is John McCain. We need a leader who understands that you don’t vote against funding for troops in harms way. We need a leader who supports victory in Iraq, and doesn’t try to legislate failure. We need a leader who understands that when a democracy is invaded, the response is to stand by their side, not call on them to show restraint. On all these issues during this campaign Americans have seen with their own eyes what Joe Biden has repeatedly made clear – Barack Obama does not have the judgment or experience to be President of the United States.

"Josh Rushing is a United States Marine Captain who was a press officer for United States Central Command (CENTCOM) during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq. He became famous for his appearance in the documentary Control Room, which documented his conversation with Al Jazeera correspondent Hassan Ibrahim. After the Pentagon ordered him not to comment on the movie,[1] he left the Marine Corps and is now working for Al Jazeera English. In 2007, Palgrave Macmillan published Mission: Al-Jazeera, Rushing's memoir of his journey from a small town in Texas to the Marines to Al Jazeera English."

The plane has nothing to do with the Obama nomination and acceptance speech tomorrow. It's just real bad timing.

As for what to expect tomorrow, I think people will wonder why Obama felt the need to change venues. They'll see a big crowd, but wonder why Pepsi Center wasn't large enough. And then they'll take a measure of the man and see whether he's really capable of being president.

I clearly don't think he is. He lacks the experience and his experiences and associations should clearly indicate that he is someone who lacks the character and fitness to be President.

Mile High Stadium is the old stadium that Invesco Field replaced.

Invesco bought rights to the playing field, not the stadium. It's only Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium when the Broncos play there.

They aren't going to call the new Yankee Stadium anything else, in it's fourth (fifth?) incarnation. I could care less about naming rights, I know how everyone refers to the venue, and it doesn't include the word Invesco.

First part was effective. Then it jumped the shark 15 minutes into it. Whenever they panned the camera to the crowd, the black delegates and members looked totally pissed.

I was talking on the phone to my boyfriend during it, and I said that for a Convention which nominated a black man for President, it's been unusually lily-white. Pelosi, Kennedy, Schlossberg, Hillary, Bill.

It is because the media wishes for Leiberman to be the pick. He's unpopular with the Left and the Media (but I repeat myself). He was for the war in Iraq when the Left was not. He speaks about morals and right and wrong, things the Left hates. And, picking him as a VP would disturb social conservatives, thus damaging McCain's chances of securing Republican voters.

So, of course the media would push the idea of Lieberman; he's the worst pick possible for a man [McCain] who has for years been on thin ground with conservatives.

OT: ATTENTION ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS and ELECTRICIANS!

I got an email from a buddy of mine in Lithuania.

what is meaning of : 1.5 amps into a 150 ohm load for 1.5 mil sec?

Can anyone decipher this for me? We were in the US Army Advanced Engineer course together, but I was more of a combat engineer. I can clear a minefield for you, but this stuff is out of my realm. It's probably easy, and I could dig into my textbooks and figure it out, but I'm lazy in that regard.

Let's see if I can remember that stuff right:

1.5A * 150Ohm = 225 Volts
1.5A * 225 V = 337.5 Watts
337.5 Watts * 1.5 msec
= 337.5 J/sec * 0.0015 sec
= 0.50625 Joule

Maybe that's what they're looking for, but it's kind of incoherent.

He's obviously been listening to Dick Morris then. He's been advising that Obama needs to get away from all the purple unicorns and other assorted cumbaya crap that plays in San Francisco and give a State of the Union type acceptance speech. Otherwise he is heading for the most spectacular crash in electoral history. I'm kind of hoping he will give a typical Obama speech that will send shivers up Chrissy's leg and make Olberman forget he is a man, technically, just to witness the mass implosion over at Daily Kos. I think I would pay good money to see that.

I've been watching this ... if you converted Joules into watt-seconds (seconds is what I was thinking of when I saw "Olympics" ... ) would that make any more sense?

I use the fact that a Watt is defined as a Joule per second ("J/sec") - which is another way of saying a Joule is a "Watt-second" - in what I have there.

Was there more on this earlier? What's the "Olympics" reference about?

Anyway, they don't really specify what they are actually looking for you to actually calculate, if anything at all. That's all I was getting at.

What kills me is the Hollywood Left and their hypocrisies - and all their s*ck a*ss fans that adore them so. Every juvenile stoner movie directed to the youth of this country, from the late 60's on, played
the "class" angle. Any kid named "Biff" (or "Beua" or "Hunter" etc.) with well to-do parents, dad is the mayor etc., was scorned and ripped apart. All the laughs came from torturing the exact kind of family/kids as the Bidens'. "Animal House" and the "Saturday Night Live" crowd just ate the sh*t up. Ditto for "gays". How many poor inner city folks can relate to what Biden and the DNC put out there tonight ? His boy is everything they are supposed to despise if you take the cue from the pop culture heros view of the world. I watched a celebrity roast on the Comedy Channel last week and it seemed every joke involved insinuating that this one or that one was gay - as in "gay" was something to make fun of - but its the conservatives that are the knuckle dragging gay bashers ! If you want to see a study in just how sick most of the a**holes that are responsible for so much of the crap put up on the silver screen and on the tube, are - watch the "Bob Sagett" (sp ?) Roast". Make sure you are alone. Most of them should be on medication ! But I digress...

After stopping back through Augusta, KS, to pick up the second Air Force One replica, he headed up to Minneapolis. On Sunday, Aug. 24, he delivered the second replica to the Minneapolis Convention Center, where he is now working to stage it and get it ready for display. The replica will be on display as part of CivicFest, which is scheduled from Aug. 29 through Sept. 4, in conjunction with the 2008 Republication National Convention.

I respectfully disagree. I think many more women would have voted for Hillary, which probably makes you in the minority (along with my wife ...)
This year only, and we're talking backup POTUS, a nice competent female is exactly what's called for.

Palin scores big because she actually walks the walk on social issues, and has proven to be a great Governor.

Fiora scores big, because it was her framework that got HP to overtake Dell. Just took longer than the board was willing to wait.

And, as somebody pointed out, PLEASE don't make us choose among four senators.

I'm not suggesting women would vote for Palin because she's a woman. I was unaware that she won a beauty pageant. I have total respect for her because of her (pro) choice decisions, she is the mother of a Down's syndrome child, I think. That would (as a VP) really give her the bully pulpit that is needed to address a lot of those issues. I would LOVE IT if somebody with a "dog in the hunt" could take on some of the current feminist lunatics, with some authority.
(and, as I said in another thread, she likes to fish :)

Carly Fiona did, or did not, depending on your perspective, "run HP into the Ground". There are various and sundry articles indicating that HP's present position are the direct result of her fundamental business decisions. HP now has overtaken Dell in that market. New management, but fundamental strategy has not changed at all.

George W.'s War...Read All The Way To The End...

By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY
No one likes war. War is a horrific affair, bloody and expensive. Sending our men and women into battle to perhaps die or be maimed is an unconscionable thought.

Yet some wars need to be waged, and someone needs to lead. The citizenry and Congress are often ambivalent or largely opposed to any given war. It's up to our leader to convince them. That's why we call the leader "Commander in Chief."

George W.'s war was no different. There was lots of resistance to it. Many in Congress were vehemently against the idea. The Commander in Chief had to lobby for legislative approval.

Along with supporters, George W. used the force of his convictions, the power of his title and every ounce of moral persuasion he could muster to rally support. He had to assure Congress and the public that the war was morally justified, winnable and affordable. Congress eventually came around and voted overwhelmingly to wage war.

George W. then lobbied foreign governments for support. But in the end, only one European nation helped us. The rest of the world sat on its hands and watched.

After a few quick victories, things started to go bad. There were many dark days when all the news was discouraging. Casualties began to mount. It became obvious that our forces were too small. Congress began to drag its feet about funding the effort.

Many who had voted to support the war just a few years earlier were beginning to speak against it and accuse the Commander in Chief of misleading them. Many critics began to call him incompetent, an idiot and even a liar. Journalists joined the negative chorus with a vengeance.

As the war entered its fourth year, the public began to grow weary of the conflict and the casualties. George W.'s popularity plummeted. Yet through it all, he stood firm, supporting the troops and endorsing the struggle.

Without his unwavering support, the war would have surely ended, then and there, in overwhelming and total defeat.

At this darkest of times, he began to make some changes. More troops were added and trained. Some advisers were shuffled, and new generals installed.

Then, unexpectedly and gradually, things began to improve. Now it was the enemy that appeared to be growing weary of the lengthy conflict and losing support. Victories began to come, and hope returned.

Many critics in Congress and the press said the improvements were just George W.'s good luck. The progress, they said, would be temporary. He knew, however, that in warfare good fortune counts.

Then, in the unlikeliest of circumstances and perhaps the most historic example of military luck, the enemy blundered and was resoundingly defeated. After six long years of war, the Commander in Chief basked in a most hard-fought victory.

So on that historic day, Oct. 19, 1781, in a place called Yorktown , a satisfied George Washington sat upon his beautiful white horse and accepted the surrender of Lord Cornwallis, effectively ending the Revolutionary War.

What? Were you thinking of someone else?

Compaq still had indigestion trying to absorb Digital (where I worked for over 10 years).

Meg Whitman? Another without government experience.

Not that there is anything wrong with that in general, but how good would she be at fielding questions from the MSM, who would be determined to trip her up?

And how is she at debating? Plugs is a buffoon, but he has had 30 years of practice at it in the Senate - and to the untrained eye and ear (like many who would be watching the Veep debate) he'd sound good.

I'd like to see a woman on the ticket as much as anyone, but not primarily because she's a woman. The best person for the job is who we should be clamoring for.

Hope McCain is for once not playing Maverick and decides to be Reaganesque by bringing principles and pragmatism together in a way that unites the GOP. Because of - let's face it - his age and his shaky record with the Republican base, his VP selection is crucial.

Al-Jiz? Hope you gave THEM an earful, Dude!

/can you use any help with the stuff? I'm on forced vacation due to my workplace being forcibly CLOSED by the Peoples' Alliance for Demagoguery, here in BKK. online help?

Thanks. I think I will just pop them into Word and add captions in the document and save it as a HTML page. It's down and dirty, but it works. I'm too tired to do it tonight, but I will get to it in the next day or so.

The host asked me about my job and financial situation (the producer had gotten the info from me ahead of time and prepped the host) and then he wanted to know if anything Clinton said tonight gave me hope that if Obama is elected, then maybe my future would be brighter and I could reach the American Dream.

I told him I wasn't very happy with some of the fiscal policies of the current administration, but I didn't hear anything from Clinton that I thought would be a viable alternative for the country.

I told him as of now, I didn't know who I was going to vote for, and I let him know that I was registered as unafilliated.

He ended my part of the interview with "well, you sound like an unafilliated cynic" and I replied "You're right."

Yeah - I was once a female boss, and I don't think I would want to hear what some of my female employees had to say about me (unfortunately...).

Any sort of earthly pleasure was looked down upon, especially women. The reason for this, as I understand, is because they don't want people getting interested in this world. Focus on the nether realm of religion.

And further (to my understanding at least,) when the Muslim faces Judgment Day, the question demanded will be, "You could have spent this time in preparing and fulfilling your jihad! What excuse have you, for Allah, that you chose against Him?"

And the feeble-minded jihadi buckles on the vest, for his family and their deity...

The thing about Bush is that he's not good at defending himself and he's not eloquent as a speaker. I think those two things were strikes against him. However, he stood tall and his character pulled him through and for that I respect him.

Regarding McCain, I've noticed that he defends himself from attack, and he's very good at it. I like to see that.

Yeah, I noticed that. A lot of bone fide traitors in that room. It's a national disgrace.

Say, about the Michelle being proud all of a sudden thing. I didn't watch her speech, but her original damning quote was to the effect that she had not been proud of America up to certain point in time. Saying that she's proud now, really doesn't contradict what she said before at all, but everybody's OK with her now? Even though she hasn't said anything different? Am I missing something?

I was just watching a video segment of Joe Biden saying that because of Barack Obama people pay lower taxes in Illinois.

So I just checked - total sales tax (state + local sales taxes) in Chicago is a whopping 10.25 percent. That compares with 5 percent in Massachusetts (also known as "Taxachusetts" and therefore a good choice for comparison).

The state income tax rate in Illinois is 3 percent, compared with 5 percent in Massachusetts - so the state income tax is lower. But that 2% lower income tax rate was accomplished by having a sales tax rate that's more than twice as high.

The Messiah's miraculous lowering of taxes in Illinois is no more real than the rest of his accomplishments.

779 BingoBunny  Wed, Aug 27, 2008 9:56:31pm

The real purpose of this convention is not the nomination of BO.. but to get the elected super delegates off the hook.. if Hillary had insisted they vote.. BO would have won.. but the supers would have all had to hang their asses out in public as his supporters.. now they can ALL claim.. gee I had problems with his invasion of Pakistan.. her never proud of America.. the black Muslim terrorist connections etc when he turns this election into a FAIL.. they go home happy they are invisible instead of having Americas blood on their hands.. if he wins.. they still get to slide past his FAIL running America like a gulag mind police guard.

re: #739 Killian Bundy

Have you actually read her resume?

/seriously, what's not to like?

I really hate to bring this up, but the fact is that her big drawback is the same as what ought to be a disqualifier for Obama - lack of experience. She's only been a governor for a fairly short time, and it's a pretty small state, population-wise. Ironically, though, she arguably has better experience than Obama. At least she was an executive in charge of a small city for a time before being governor.

re: #773 Optimizer

"Saying that she's proud now, really doesn't contradict what she said before at all, but everybody's OK with her now? Even though she hasn't said anything different? Am I missing something ?"

After her speech the other night, when she did a 180 and now "alls fine in the country she so loves, apple pie, G_d and mom...then why do we so desperately need the "change" they try to ram down our throats ? At least when she was not "proud" of her country, when the average Joe/Jane was suffering a dreadful existence here in this "G_d damned" country of ours" the call for "change" at least made sense (if that's how she really felt about things). Listening to her for a few minutes the other night I remember thinking to myself "Sounds great ! You're loving life there Michelle - I can't complain myself so hey, lets not "change" a thing !" I then went for my trusty remote and she/they were history... if it would only be that simple come November !
No, no - don't say it !

re: #750 Archimedes

How do you stay in the White House for Eight years and then in Senate only to be thrown under the bus by your own party?

It’s simple. Obama has a better criminal outfit than Hillary.

He has got Soros backing him and terrorists protecting him - and he has the race card which trumps any Typical White Person.

785 Mosse  Wed, Aug 27, 2008 11:48:57pm

I'd just like to ask why there are all these gory, soupy "family" sob-stories, one after another? Do these people actually think that a political party should be founded on personal stories of tragedy? That this crap reflects some sort of "character" contest with John McCain? We ALL make sacrifices for our kids; we ALL have gone through difficulties -- many nearly crushing! ...ugh. This is like some sort of therapy session without any requirement of "rigorous personal honesty." Hooey. I'm ALSO really concerned that the "Greek temple" background they've constructed for Obama's "materialization" tomorrow is very, very fascist-looking! Think of Mussolini! The fulfillment of the Roman Empire - the "New Man"! ...Change by the Deranged...
Thanks, Lizards. My time was taken up today, but it's so good to go to LGF and find people who see THROUGH this delusionary sop! Bah!

The most interesting thing is the complete lack of any actual details of what these great changes are ? Installation of a radical Stalanist adgenda ? Repeat the expensive & failed socialist policies of the defunct USSR ?

I have come to the conculsion the sum total of the change mantra is simply "Obama != GWB" and that's all there is to it.
