Thank you, Senator McCain! Go Sarah!

Rush is besides himself.

5 rawmuse  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:47:48am

I am going off to the gym, but I am pretty darned ecstatic about this.
Today I will add another thousand pounds to my regimen, in honor of Ms. Palin.

6 NoSubmission  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:47:51am

I love her straight talk. She's 1,000 times the speaker than Obama will ever be.

7 shug  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:47:59am

To shatter the glass ceiling She will Use Biden's plugged head as a battering ram

8 NoSubmission  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:48:08am

Best speech yet.

9 oldbennevis  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:48:09am

Can't wait to put a McCain/Palin sign in my front yard!

10 skyrocket  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:48:18am

I hear crickets from the Obama campaign...

11 Honorary Yooper  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:48:41am

Very good speech, far superior to anything I've ever heard Obama say. And, if I hear correctly, this is off the cuff, no notes, no teleprompter.

12 iceman1960  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:49:01am

McCain/Palin HELL YEAH!

She's real. Obama isn't. And she's got a fire in her belly.

Poor Hillary is probably stewing today lmao

I am proud to be an American today, much prouder than I was yesterday. Take that Barry and Michelle!

16 maddogg  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:50:05am

I also see that she is very comfortable speaking live in front of large crowds. Speaking well is a major advantage.

17 blastforth  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:50:11am

Sorry, this pick strikes me as a gimmick. I pray I'm wrong.

18 Sharmuta  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:50:13am

re: #11 Honorary Yooper

She had a folder. But I think she had only notes, and barely looked at them.

19 Right Brain  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:50:15am

Barack Who has been knocked off the front page of every newspaper in the world.

This McCain is one clever dude, his twenty-six years running campaigns is showing. He's going to rock that little Hawaiian kid.

Oh! You know it! I've never heard him like that!

21 truculentinfidel  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:50:18am

Was hoping for Mitt but Palin looks like a winner!
Had to change the channel from CBC(Canadian Broadcasting Station), all the rolling comments at the bottom of the screen was all about obama and his fawning annnouncements and endorsments. Made me sick and changed to a different channel.

McCain and Palin '08!

22 tommygum  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:50:27am

My second choice, after Mitt. That being said, I'm happy as a clam. McCain/Palin 08!

23 docremulac  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:50:37am

Bye bye Obama!

24 Nevergiveup  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:50:38am

Smucky chucky from NY criticized her experience. Don't these ass hats realize their candidate for President has less and is less accomplished?

25 iceman1960  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:50:44am

Guess what Obama... McCain gets it!

26 Oh no...Sand People!  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:50:56am

27 snowcrash  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:51:03am

I am delighted. She has a sincere quality that is lacking in most politicians.

28 Pullus Iulius  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:51:04am

A truly inspirational choice in an election year characterized by unspiration. Let's get to work.

29 solomonpanting  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:51:12am

Sally Fields' daughter. Not too shabby.

30 phoenixgirl  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:52:00am

SHE WAS FANTABULOUS!

31 Jimmy Doolittle  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:52:14am

Go Sarah!

An inspired choice by McCain. He's going to get another contribution from me.

What a way to revitalize the Republican Party. She will make a wonderful candidate - now and in 2012, 2016, whenever.

I have been to Alaska many times, for business and pleasure. The entire state has the aura of an economic opportunity in the middle of a National Treasure.

Ethics, Energy, Guns, Freedom, Life.

This will be awesome.

32 DistantThunder  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:52:28am

She's an athlete and a competitor. She calls 'em like she sees them. palin is the kind of woman that both men and women respect unlike the ball crushing feminists like HIllary.

33 Sharmuta  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:52:28am

re: #17 blastforth

Sorry, this pick strikes me as a gimmick. I pray I'm wrong.

I agree.

37 SouthAmericanWay  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:53:12am

Wonderful words and a wonderful life story!

What a contrast to the "doom and gloom", and to the record of no service at all, of the O-Biden team...

Fire in the belly is a necessity, IMHO, for anything.

I like her.

39 cblesz  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:53:30am

That was AWESOME! Fu*k Chucky Schumer. Do they not realize that the idiot they nominated has been a community organizer? They did not nominate Joe Biden...

43 cblesz  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:54:37am

I just can't wait for the commercials to start... I heard Zeus, er Obama talking last nite, and he was talking about McCain's voting record, how much he was like Bush. I just want to see someone lay the votes out side by side, show how many Apollo, sorry Obama, voted present on...

How many he voted busy accepting money from Rezko on crooked tenement deals on... How many he was in high school on... Can I stop now?

Sarah Palin? Hell yeah!

What is Rush saying? By the way, the DNC f&*ked Hillary and threw her away. And, so did Obama. Which party picked a strong woman? Hmmmm?

61 sealizard  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:56:41am

This is a home run! Gov. Palin is a fantastic, dynamic speaker and better than that: I love the substance of her words...not empty rhetoric. McCain/Palin 08! A winning ticket!

62 SeafoodGumbo  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:56:49am

I expect that McCain build on the momentum of this pick and publicly change his stance on ANWR a few days before the convention, sending the Republican base into celebration.

63 Sunlight  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:56:55am

I never imagined I'd actually be excited about a nomination. It feels like a breath of fresh air. Her normality, energy, and successful assertiveness will lift up this country. I've thought it for years: Title IX sports are changing this country because the other half of the population (girls/women) are learning how to operate in public. It is starting now as a benefit to the U.S. Such an example for my 6' basketball player daughter! WAY TO GO, McCAIN CAMPAIGN!

64 CommonCents  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:57:03am

66 Noam Chumpski  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:57:10am

Oh. My. God... Palin for President for God's sake.

I just watched her speech... man. I've been lackluster during this campaign, but I got a new crush on this Lady.

Strong and confident. A true example for America's Men and Women.

Win or lose Mrs. Palin's got my support now and in the future.

74 FrogMarch  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 9:58:56am

Every time the DNC media tries to run her down as inexperienced - it gives us another opportunity to remind everyone of Obma's complete lack of experience.

Smart.

Mona Charen at NRO's The Corner:

Is it Just Me [Mona Charen]

or does Sarah Palin seem more genuine than the average pol? Admittedly, I'm strongly prejudiced in her favor because she is the living embodiment of the pro-life cause. But she is also the opposite of the America Obama sketched last night. He wants us all to think of ourselves as broken, beaten, and in need of government help. He caricatures the conservative message as "You're on your own." Palin, of Alaska, still carries the spark of the frontier, the independence, and the spunk. I think Americans will identify with her far more than with Senator (been in Washington for 97 years) Biden.

88 Truck Monkey  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 10:00:44am

It's over! The Palin pick puts Johnny Mac in the White House in 2008 and Sarah Palin (hopefully) in 2012. Thank you Johnny Mac. I was not crazy about J Mac winning the primary but this pick makes me proud to be a conservative.

I fully expect Democrats to try and claim as much. Surely, if Palin is a gimmick, then so too is Biden, because it's designed to bolster the nominees in areas that they're weak. Biden is supposed to lend gravitas and experience, sorely lacking in Obama. Palin is supposed to add youth, vigor, and appeal to the conservatives.

I have to admit, I can't recall any grand entrance into the national consciousness by a political candidate that has been more electrifying in my entire life.

She brings a very positive image and greatly broadens the reach of McCain's candidacy, although I still have some reservations about her as a candidate for the second highest office in the land.

She has 9-1/2 weeks to convince me that she's the right person, but she's off to a flying start.

I'll vote for the ticket regardless, but I want to vote with that extra measure of confidence of knowing that I'm voting for two people who I believe have what it takes to be the President of the United States.

You know...whenever we get one of those haughty politicians talk about anything, in the back of the heads of a lot of Americans is the belief that they could do a better job then the idiot running.

Sarah Palin represents that sentiment. It doesn't matter if she doesn't have 36 years in the US Senate. She apparently can think, make judgements, and stand for what she believes and she does it with passion. That is what the American people are looking for....the glass half full and the belief we can still do more.

re: #134 maddogg

Anybody checked the Kossacks to see if all their little tiny brain cases have depressureized?

yes they are slamming her already:

Palin disses the Office of V.P. [video

via Kos himself:

Let's be honest: John McCain clearly wanted Tom Ridge or Joe Lieberman, but he was afraid to buck his party's choice ideologues. So then they looked at Mittens, but having a baker's dozen homes wasn't looking so hot. So he figured that with Pawlenty, he might make a play for Minnesota, but that got shot down over the last week as it become increasingly obvious that Biden would wipe the floor with him in their debate.

Throw in Obama's ground-shifting speech last night, and it was clear that McCain had to throw a hail mary to just remain in the game, much less be competitive.

So we get Sarah Palin, who has a fairly compelling personal story and is an attractive woman, but has scant political experience, zero name recognition outside of political junky circles, faces an ethical investigation by her own legislature, and will now be forced to run a grueling national campaign despite having an infant child at home.

Those are the marks of desperation, and really, given his precarious electoral position, John McCain had no choice

If the Dems do attack her alleged lack of experience, they may find it a double edged sword. Palin still has more executive experience as a small town mayor and state Governor than Obama has with 2 years as a US senator (and 3 terms state senator).

Also, Palin comes across as a regular American, not an elitist. This helps McCain and is in stark contrast to Obama & Biden.

She's been my number one choice for McCain's veep for six months! I'm so happy I could just... well, I'm freaking out. Her speech was awesome, and I think watching her debate Biden will be a rare treat as she makes him look like the dullard fossil that he is.

John "Die Hard" McCain and Sarah "Barracuda" Palin '08!

Oh, and she's HOT! You think men won't tune in to watch her?

She has a son in the military going to Iraq AND a baby boy with Down Syndrome: Think she's not relatable to women? She's a hockey mom, for crying out loud.

And, Todd Palin is a champion snowmobile racer! We got the NASCAR vote! LOL!

I'm going to get really, really ecstatically drunk tonight. :-)

I couldn't be happier. I was so give-a-rip about this election... until now.

Take THAT Obambi:

McCain aide Jill Hazelbaker:

It is pretty audacious for the Obama campaign to say that Governor Palin is not qualified to be Vice President. She has a record of accomplishment that Senator Obama simply cannot match. Governor Palin has spent her time in office shaking up government in Alaska and actually achieving results -- whether it’s taking on corruption, passing ethics reform or stopping wasteful spending and the ‘bridge to nowhere.’ Senator Obama has spent his time in office running for President.

She has more experience (and actual accomplished big things) than Obama himself has. More executive experience (actually accomplishing things with a 80+ percent approval) than Biden. And a possible link to the future (Palin '12 or '16?). Unless something comes out, I'm thinking this was genius.

She's a great choice. Now that Obama's going to talk down her creds, everyone can start talking about his creds and we'll put them side by side. He won't look good.

She's got exec experience in a difficult state, she's a mother (including a child with a disability), and she's young and gutsy. McCain's got many more years in government than Obama AND military service AND extreme sacrifice both physical and spiritual.

Barack's got a couple years in the senate where he was not even there most of the time. He's got some years as a House Rep -- also 'part time'. He's got a lot of experience with terrorists, racists, and drug dealers, but not in fighting them but rather in befriending them. Biden's got hair plugs, a plagiarism scandal, hair plugs, family scandals, hair plugs, and a lot of hot air.

It should be a McCain blow-out but Obama's massive media contingent gives him an excellent chance to become President. Yuk. Xp

Go McCain/Palin!

Today's installment in yahoo.mail "What Media Bias" headlines watch:

McCain chooses Alaska Cov. Sarah Palin for V.P.
McCain's veep choice is historic and hardly known
Analysis: Palin's age, inexperience rival Obama's
Obama avoids race on King's 'Dream' anniversary
Scenes from the veep announcement
Obama uses speech for high-tech outreach.

That's four stories about McCain/Palin and two for Obama, with an Obama mention in a Palin story.

And two negative stories about Palin "hardly known" and "inexperience."

Let's compare to last Saturday's when Biden was picked.

Obama introduces running mate Biden.
Biden's career provides grist for McCain's mill.
Biden brings agile mind, loose lips to ticket
Analysis: Biden fills attack role
5 things the Biden pick says about Obama
Obama must use convention to regain momentum.

No stories about McCain, unless you count the grist mill comment, which may be negative about Biden or McCain, I'm not sure.

Compare the two "Analysis" reports: They worry about age/inexperience of Palin, but Biden fills a role.

It's not popular here but in my gut I know it is true.

I missed the speech; will it be rebroadcasted, and if so, where/when?

I'm pretty ambivalent about the Palin pick.

289 pyrodoctor  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 11:07:32am

Great pick. McCain manages to pick someone that has many of the same maverick qualities he has, yet still satisfies the needs of the core Republicans. Whoever is advising him is a genius. We'll see how she does in the debate with Biden. He'll get more of the women vote. Maybe even some more labor vote. Possibly can put Michigan and Ohio into play.

290 MajorTom  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 11:11:20am

LOL, CNN.com has as their top banner the replay of Obama's & Biden's speaches from last night.

"No, no! Pay no attention to the pretty lady, listen instead to your daily indoctrination! .... Please?"

lmao

291 eaglewingz08  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 11:13:06am

I concur that this is a great pick. I wish she had a full term as Governor, but that executive experience is still more than the dem ticket combined. And everytime the dems say she's not experienced to be VP, it will remind the voters that the top of the dem ticket has fewer qualifications to be President than Palin has to be VP. It will also be a pleasure to see a woman knock the bejesus out of Sen. Blowhard Biden during the debate. McCain is playing chess while the dems are playing checkers. We now have a reformist repub ticket against a business as usual dem ticket. That's change you can believe in.

294 lennysquiggy  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 11:47:14am

On paper, Palin nullifies Dem talking points and solidifies Conservatives behind McCain.

But that's just on paper. On camera and at the microphone, this woman is as good as it gets.

295 billy hank  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 11:49:00am

One of the rune casting, bird guts forcasting technique used by political soothsayers is the syllabic method of forecasting a presidential ticket's victory chances. The ticket with the fewest syllables wins. The supposition is that fewer syllables are easier for the public to remember. McCain-Palin vs. Obama-Biden. Figure it out.

296 bruin  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 11:49:51am

Genius! Gov. Palin will prove to be a formidable V.P. candidate in so many ways. I am totally blown away with this choice; it dismantles so many of the O.B. ticket's talking points.

Change? Palin IS CHANGE! Biden? 36 years of no accomplishments and Washington, D.C. cronyism? Hah! This campaign has taken a very compelling, strategic tack. Amazing!

By the way... Checking the underbelly of the political world over at the D.U., I turned over a rock and uncovered the following post:

I think this is absolutely brilliant.

There's a good number of minimally interested voters who are not informed enough about issues to be swayed either way by intelligent discussion. But you give them a woman candidate and they'll automatically be on board because of novelty or specifically because she's a woman. The fact that she is also a successful governor (which automatically gives her more executive experience than Obama) and is more than competent with the relevant issues means that she is effective at all levels. As effective as we could possibly hope in our wildest dreams that a VP candidate could be.

There's a decent number of people (we call them liberals) who choose their candidates based on extremely superficial criteria... Palin has so many of those superficialities in her favor that there's a decent number of non-leftist liberals who are going to be in play with this move as well. Genius.

I didn't actually think I could be this excited about anything having to do with the McCain campaign, but this has sure given me a charge.

McCain/Palin 08!

299 gfgbpackers  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 12:02:37pm

Palin is what I was hoping for. I think every thing they can attack Palin on also applies to Obama, except he's running for Pres not VP.

300 zombie  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 12:09:24pm

Considering that the name "Palin" is involved, and that McCain is well-known as a curser and his VP is a woman, and they both support anti-terror legislation, perhaps we can call the campaign

McCain Palin's Spying Her-Cuss

re: #83 ljmw

One thing is certain Tina Fey's resume just got a little longer

Yes. Tina Fey now has guaranteed employment with SNL or another outfit for the next timeframe. I have a feeling that Palin will be on the national stage for years to come, hopefully as the VP.

302 vitamintom  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 12:12:13pm

This will turn the Dems from the "progressives" who nearly nominated a woman to be their presidential candidate into the He-Man Woman Haters Club in one fell swoop.

303 lennysquiggy  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 12:28:25pm

#160 Charles:

This could end up being a good move, but I think it's pretty risky for McCain. People could see it as a "gimmick" choice, and you can bet the Dems will start hitting her lack of experience right away.

If the Dems cry "gimmick," they will be seen as hypocrites. Their entire strategy - for everything including this election - is based on divisiveness and vagueness.

Speaking of vagueness and gimmicks, I know more about Sarah Palin's policies and stances than I do about Barry's. I only became aware that Palin existed at 10am EST. I've been listening to Barry blow smoke for over a year.

If the Dems want to point out her experience, they will be raising the issue of Barry's inexperience. Palin has more experience and she's on the right side of the issues. Never mind the the experience of their running mates - John McCain is a war hero while Joe Biden is a kooky old racist with no thoughts of his own.

The Dems have nowhere to go on this one. Game over.

re: #84 NamesAGame

I understand she's also a hunter. Anyone know if she's an NRA member? That would be priceless.

Yes, she is a lifetime member of the NRA. I absolutely love this woman and see only good things coming from this pick! This was a master stroke of the brush and McCain is a crafty ol bastid ain't he?

re: #304 bolivar

McCain you magnificent bastard!

306 rorschach  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 1:11:19pm

With his pick of Sarah Palin, McCain has SUNK the S.S. Obama.

And even he looked energized standing next to her.

An exemplary choice.

307 likesbrusselssprouts  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 1:34:18pm

I think Hill is thrilled with this development. It really makes her Dems look really really bad, clinches the deal for Mac, and opens the door in 4 years.

What a gutsy move for Mac. Bravo.

"re: #248 really grumpy big dog Johnson

One more item for this both of McCain's sons are in the service and I believe both have had or are deploying to Iraq"

Main reason why I've never really liked Romney-four strapping sons and not a one whose served his country.

309 katemaclaren  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 3:06:53pm

Hello Lizards! I've been away all day, but caught the speech on the radio--and saw that she wasn't wearing a pants suit as soon as I tuned in the TV! Last night, I told one of my friends, "I hope it's Sarah Palin..." and my friend (a Democrat) said "Who's that?"
I say YAAAAAAYYYY! I was thrilled with her wonderful speech. Articulate, confident, hitting the right notes and eloquent! I loved the part about serving when she said that those who govern must have the heart of a servant. Bravo!....or I should say, Brava! Bella!

...and how about that sly McCain! Planning to do this with the annivesary of the Women's Suffrage Movement! hahahaha...take that retro-Dems with your MLK dreams.

310 str8outtamonongahela  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 3:14:31pm

obama and hillary were "gimmicks". now the shoe is on the other foot. the democrats hatred but confusion at how bush won twice made them reach for straws...how else to finally win an election over satan than by putting forth a black man and a woman? its all gimmicks and lights for the democrats.....and they just got smizacked.

this palin chick got everyone charged. shes hot, speaks intelligently and she's hot. i know chuck is worried about the creationist thing but i dont see that as anything to get in a tiff about. this was a smart move by mccain in such an already awkward campaign.

311 Dr. Shalit  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 3:21:58pm

OK Everyone:

Gov. Palin was good today and I expect she will get better. This is good news.

312 brianstien  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 3:58:29pm

I wonder who'll be the first to hit on Governor Palin - McCain, Edwards, or Slick Willie? That'll leave Larry Craig & Jim McGreevy to fight over the Governor's husband.

re: #252 cybermonk

Actually, he said God Bless America last night, if you want to get technical. When he was on the Land of Opportunity track, that is, not the Hopeless Except For Me track.

Anyway, wow. I thought the McCain gentlemanly-rival ad was a little phony - such things require more style than he'd exhibited - but boy, does he ever live up to the archetype now that he's "back at it" today. L stamp of approval!

314 Solly  Fri, Aug 29, 2008 7:08:28pm

Geez, I am working on a HUGE crush right now!

That is one sexy, formidable, impressive, undeniably capable woman!

I'd bet the mortgage, (which I pay, and will continue myself, WITHOUT your help, Mr. Obama, thank you very freaking much), that this lady could take Obama in a debate, a fistfight, or a drinking contest!

315 Daisy  Sat, Aug 30, 2008 7:23:16am

Listening to her speech in the car yesterday - she was so direct, clear and riveting - I had to pull over - no distractions allowed. She makes the air fresher.

First thought: Why isn't this woman running for President?!

Later, seeing her next to a beaming McCain, I laughed w/delight. He looks a hell of a lot better w/Palin by his side. :)
