Zombie: Code Pink and Abortion Protesters Fail to Disrupt EMILY's List Gala with Hillary, Michelle and Nancy

Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 12:14:35 pm PDT

(Cross-posted at Pajamas Media.)

IMG_6175.JPG

One of the hottest tickets at the Democratic National Convention was the “EMILY’s List Gala” starring Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama and Nancy Pelosi, held at the Sheraton Hotel on Tuesday afternoon, August 26. Here’s my souvenir button.

IMG_5673.JPG

Code Pink, whom you’d think would be happy about an event celebrating a bunch of liberal women politicians, showed up to protest the gala. Partly this is because of their obsession with Nancy Pelosi and her failure to impeach George Bush, but mainly it’s simply because Code Pink will go anywhere where they think there will be media.

This video shows the young Code Pinker depicted above leading them in a chant of “This is what democracy looks like!” outside the Sheraton; she practically screams herself hoarse she’s so frantic, and just loves all the attention she’s getting.

IMG_5660.JPG

Some of the other Code Pinkers tried to oonch themselves closer to the entrance, but the Sheraton security team and the police were having none of it.

IMG_5661.JPG

Even after being ordered to retreat back to the sidewalk, the Code Pink ladies refused at first to budge, until later when they were physically escorted off the Sheraton’s private property.

IMG_5706.JPG

I ventured downstairs into the Sheraton itself; the warm-up speakers were being broadcast on big screens outside the ballroom where the gala was being held. Here’s EMILY’s list founder Ellen Malcolm. (No, her name is not Emily, but Ellen; EMILY is actually an acronym for the phrase “Early Money Is Like Yeast.” Seriously.)

IMG_5689.JPG

Periodically, Code Pinkers would successfully sneak into the Sheraton and try to crash the gala. But in each instance that I saw, they were spotted by security and instructed to leave immediately.

IMG_5690.JPG

Code Pink’s strategy when told to leave, as we saw earlier, is to just stand there and do nothing. So the security detail would call for backup.

IMG_5683.JPG

One by one, over and over, Code Pink would-be infiltrators were escorted back up the escalator and kicked out of the building.

IMG_5650.JPG

Code Pink leader Medea Benjamin showed up (with a fake press pass) to lead the infiltration efforts, but I don’t think she was any more successful than the others.

IMG_5670.JPG

And so, confined to the sidewalk, all Code Pink could do was scream.

IMG_5703.JPG

Some naive and wholly innocent EMILY’s list members, unfamiliar with Code Pink and their tactics, showed up wearing pink clothes, unaware that this immediatley placed them on the “watch list” and subjected them to questioning and monitoring by security.

IMG_5692.JPG

Anyone wearing pink who tried to enter the ballroom was subjected to extra searching by the Secret Service. The security checkpoint was as thorough as it is at airports: no liquids allowed in, metal detectors, all bags inspected.

IMG_5700.JPG

All sorts of politicos were milling around the lobby, if you knew who to look for. For example, as mentioned in my earlier “Celebrity-Hopping” report, I ran into San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris.

IMG_5710.JPG

Finally, the big stars came out to speak, and the whole thing seemed to go off without a hitch. As to what they said: Does it really matter?

IMG_5726.JPG

Thinking there was nothing more of interest to report on, I left the ballroom, and emerged only to find that a new protest had popped up outside the Sheraton, on a completely different topic: abortion. On one side were extreme anti-abortion protesters who displayed disturbingly visceral signs purporting to show the results of late-term abortions.

IMG_5719.JPG

Facing off against them were even more extreme pro-abortion and anti-Christian protesters, led by World Can’t Wait. Middle ground? Compromise? Forget about it.

IMG_5730.JPG

A pro-abortion (her own words) woman went on a long diatribe denouncing Christianity and praising abortion.

IMG_5712.JPG

The anti-abortion protesters, on the other hand, simply stood there silently with their stomach-churning signs.

IMG_5714.JPG

If you’re going to protest against something, you really ought to learn how to spell it.

Why the heck do they all have to shout? Hmmm...maybe they really don't have a message that can be heard unless they shout it over and over, like some mindless slogan?

Things are ratcheting up to a very extreme level. I fear there will be violence. And, no, I do not advocate it.

Gosh, they are so discreet, in that pink princess get-up - Those security guys must have been really really good to spot 'em so easily.

One little thing: Please put a 'Graphic' warning on this. I find the picture of the aborted fetus' to be too much. I am pro-life, but I never needed the viscera of a mutilated fetus/baby to convince me to be.

I'm with you, but...

Did anybody warn people at the EMILY's List Gala?

20 701c  Sat, Aug 30, 2008 12:24:22pm

My next door neighbor wrote the Tongass National Forest mission statement for years. Sarah Palin was the first Alaskan Governor to sign the statement My neighbor tells me it was a buck stops here moment for him. A new way of doing business. He said it was like the difference between doing business with the Clinton Adm. (back stabbing his own people) and the Bush adm. who did what they said they would do.

Sorry Zombie I like your work.

As I think I mentioned in an earlier report, things in the real world rarely fit into neat little distinct boxes. Topics, emotions and incidents overlap and contradict each other, and scenes can go from boring to crazy to funny to disturbing to infuriating and back to boring in no time flat.

23 Charles  Sat, Aug 30, 2008 12:26:25pm

That's what some anti-abortion protesters do, folks. I've seen these kinds of pictures many times, and I strongly suspect that a lot of them are phonies.

Big corporations are a very effective way of collecting immense amounts of tax revenues. That's why Democrats in practice favor big corporations over small family owned businesses.

I agree - but there are times when a photo or an image is needed to clearly differentiate the positions. Like 'Falling Man' and other horrible shots from 9/11 and contrasting those to the nitwits who say there isn't a war going on with radical jihadism and those states who use terrorism as national policy.

26 Cognito  Sat, Aug 30, 2008 12:28:04pm

Yeah. Well.

This is pretty rough stuff.

Sarah Palin makes Andrew Sullivan regret some key life choices
Sarah Palin will give birth to the man who will lead humanity’s war against the machines.
Sarah Palin can divide by zero.

I could care less about them. Aren't they all for that? It is the ravages of their labor. I choose not to attend or protest, I just want a heads up on these things. I have seen both of those posters before and they both have been seared into my memory. I am not squeamish around blood as my work takes me to surgery. The horror of those pictures is almost too much for me. They alone would not convince me either way in pro-life/pro-abortion argument.

That's a valid point. Some may not want to be shocked by the graphic nature of those pics.

re: #23 Charles

Well, I did put "purportedly" in the caption about the late-term abortions.

Keep in mind that 99% of abortions happen MUCH earlier in the term, and the "baby" is either a tiny dot no bigger than a grain of rice, or just beginning to take on human form, but still unrecognizable. No consolation for those who believe humanhood begins at conception, but pictures of the "average" abortion wouldn't be shocking, so they use these extremely late-term abortion pictures for shock value.

But that applies to the real world too. The City of Denver did not have "NSFW" signs at the city limits.

I am NOT against using the pictures. I think they are rightly included in the (very fine Zombelicious) pictorial. Fools carrying those signs in many ways are as reprehensible in my eyes as those on the other side. I think they sadden me more than anything.

BTW, great work this week Zombie. Thanks for it!

I suspect you are correct. I think the pictures are real, just not late term abortions. If you are doing later term abortions would you photograph your handy work? I doubt it.

More likely they are photos are for medical purpose of late term fetal death (miscarriage) and the effects of a D&C (dilate and curettage), often the remains are dismember for removal in those cases.

You have to remember that, in our day and age, this is a lifestyle. They make money, Ms. Benjamin has many businesses, including a shop that I can walk to from my house called "Global Exchange". I never go in there, but they sell pottery and incense and bangle type jewelry. You can contribute to their various causes in that shop.

Same thing with Alex Jones. His is a nice little racket, selling his conspiracy theory books and DVDs.

Likewise for Cindy Sheehan.

For those not wanting to watch this video, there is a text version available.
Why this should be available and the Democrats not held accountable for all the misrepresentations found in it is incredible. But, weak minded people will watch it, believe it, and pass it on.

Why should BO and his party get a free pass on stuff like this when he is in court to stop ads supporting the GOP from being shown; when he is pressuring TV/radio stations not to carry ads HE feels are not proper.

This video is nothing but misrepresentations and lies. Eh, par for the course for them.

That's what some anti-abortion protesters do, folks. I've seen these kinds of pictures many times, and I strongly suspect that a lot of them are phonies.

And I suspect some may be miscarriages or stillbirths. You have the option of taking the remains with you or having the hospital dispose of them if you are admitted for this kind of thing as I understand. If someone has "connections" with the hospital waste people or knows when to dumpster-dive...

I said essentially the same thing above, since photos where taken I think it was part of a medically case being followed for some reason, or part of a teaching guide for late term miscarriage D&C.

I think the photos are real, just not what the protestors claim them to be.

Why does zombie keep calling Kamala Harris "San Francisco Attorney General?" Her office is district attorney. She's bad enough at that: God help us should she ever become California or US A-G.

Because that's how she behaves. She gets to determine what laws are enforced, and what laws are ignored.

If Obama wins, she's near the top of the list to become the U.S. Attorney General -- from reports I've read.

Like him, she's half black and EXTREMELY liberal. A perfect match.

Some naive and wholly innocent EMILY’s list members, unfamiliar with Code Pink and their tactics, showed up wearing pink clothes, unaware that this immediatley placed them on the “watch list” and subjected them to questioning and monitoring by security.

I can appreciate wanting to be cautious and monitor people who looked like the protesters outside but come on now; the non-Code Pink women looked clean, sane and weren't screeching. It should have been easy to tell the difference.

Some of the Harris speculation:

Harris has been mentioned for high profile jobs in an Obama Administration, with some claiming she could be a dark-horse candidate for Attorney General. "She's smart, with not a lot of experience, but given where the Senate could be [with 60 Democrats], confirmation of someone this unqualified for that important a job wouldn't be far-fetched," says a San Francisco Democratic operative. "That's one reason why the campaign wants to give her a higher profile in the coming months, to test her."

A few years back the loons from that Kansas church that does the horrible demos at military funerals put on an "antiabortion" demonstration in the town we lived in. They had people on both sides of the road with pictures like that 5 feet high - for two miles. Unfortunately, we had to drive by all of them - with our little 5 year old girl in the car. We kept her eyes covered.

Stunts like that on the part of the pro-life movement really annoy me since they resort to emotion to make a case that is more convincingly made with reason. Their actions weaken, not strengthen their cause.

And now they are going after Palin becuase of a 'lack of experience' ? Yeah community organizing (and very badly at that) is credible experience for POTUS. What gives? Kamala Harris and Willie Brown sitting in a tree...

You know the tune.

Except the tree is on some exotic island and we're paying.

Not for Willie, any more. For which we all ought to be grateful.

I saw him on the street the other day. I was relieved to see he was not wearing white socks with a navy suit this time.

You know the administration of SF has gone to hell when you long for the days of King Willie.

I personally think that this statement is very demeaning to women. Not all Republican woman are beautiful and not all liberal women are ugly.

Keep in mind that most Hollywood actresses are moonbats, and many of them have based their entire careers on being attractive. Natalie Portman, Kate Winslet, Rachel Weisz -- all moonbats.

I think it comes from desperation, and realizing the human carnage and waste that happens.

When I worked for an OB/GYN office a woman aborted 14 week old twins because she had already bought her wedding dress for her upcoming wedding in a few months.

The pro-choice nurse in the office was in tears after seeing the ultrasound. The mother saw it too - too bad - off with their little heads.

I can understand that point of view.

Protests, like this on either side do little to help the discourse.

And PacBell Park and the newEmbarcadero. When I first arrived in SF, the waterfront was like the place you would wake up, in the trunk of a car, after being kidnapped. It was bloody awful. Now, it is really nice. The Loma Prieta quake gets some of the credit, but Willie did do a damn fine job of completely turning that situation around.

BTW, after Willie found himself in a run-off election with a challenge to his Left, I became a Willie supporter.

No (MUNI cannot be fixed short of firing everyone and starting over), but the garbage generally got picked up, the streets occasionally got cleaned, and those clean public toilets got installed. Some city projects actually got done, some buildings actually got built, the T line got put in - though it doesn't really work very well, at least it's there - and some stores moved in. The parks underwent at least some maintenance.

Now, all that happens is that essential service employees are fired so Gavin can hire more aides.

That run-off taught me a big lesson. It is, never castigate a political opponent to the point where you will be embarrassed when you later end up being governed by them. I feel the same way about Obama right now. I may dislike him and his policies right now, but at the same time, he may be indeed be POTUS in 2009, and in that case, I want my crow sandwich (the one I may have to eat) to be as inoffensive as possible.

You know, I always had my suspicions about EMILY'S List. It's a stupid acronym - "Early Money Is Like Yeast"?. I mean, WTH?

Given that it aims to encourage women to enter politics, I have a sneaking suspicion that the organisation was named for Mrs Pankhurst, the British women's rights and suffragette activist, who led the fight to give British women the vote and became an icon to female political activist groups the world over.

She is often mistakenly referred to as Emily Pankhurst, which is why I think she was the inspiration behind this. Problem is, her actual name was Emmeline, not Emily. It's a common mistake that people make. Could it be that this ridiculous acronym is simply a cover for a mistake that its founders - having launched their organisation - were too embarrassed to admit to?

Just my 10p worth.
