Prayers for all those in it's path.

Evacuate. Board up. Hope for the best.

I have been watching the loops all day. It looking like it';s getting sheared in the last several hours . Let's hope it weakens significantly, in spite of the wishes of Michael Moore

Actually, IR measures temperature. Red should be the coldest cloud tops which means the highest clouds which means the strongest thunderstorms. It doesn't exactly correlate with wind speeds.

I did notice that while Bobby Jindal was requesting federal assistance on Thursday, calling up the entire Louisiana National Guard, ordering every single community on the coast to evacuate for the first time in a long, long time - yesterday, sent a combat brigade into NO to guard against looting, and much more, good old Ray Nagin was dragging his heels and dithering away time, refused to order an evacuation before this morning. Same story, different storm.

BTW, Jindal made sure that all of the evacuees could take their pets with them. One bag per person and the pets.

Tampa has been so fortunate. In 2004 all we had was a bit of wind--losing some trees and power loss. My daughter and family has delayed an excursion to Orlando because of the rain and we are feeling even a bit guilty that when it misses us it hits others! (But not too guilty!) When they moved here from Orlando they found a great house only ten minutes north of me so when I have to evacuate, being in a second evcac zone and at 12 feet elevation I only have 5 miles to go to their house.

One day I really will think about boarding up!

It's big alright, but it looks smaller and less organized than Katrina 3 years ago. Word is is that it dropped to cat 2 over Cuba and hasn't been able to reorganize much since then. The longer it takes, the less it will strengthen and the less damage it wall cause. I've been through a cat 2 - it's no fun but nothing like a cat 3, 4, or 5.

Whiplash Nagin was starting evacuations yesterday, but made it mandatory for everyone this morning. They were having buses running already, and contra-flow as well. All roads now lead out of NOLA, and the National Guard is in place to guard against looting and assist the NOPD in clearing areas of residents.

I still expect some to stick around despite all the warnings and predictions. Not a smart move on their part.

Because President Bush just went on national TV and announced that while he and Cheney are not going to the convention (wives are) in order to be available to take care of thing, they are not going to NO in order not to get in the way.

John McCain & Sarah Palin are in Mississippi at the FEMA headquarters there. Press was not allowed to follow them in, they are being briefed on what is/will be needed. They will not be staying there in order not to get in the way. A jet has been chartered by the McCain-Palin campaign to fly any delegate in MN who need to get home back to Mississippi.

I guess The One cannot fly down there to calm the winds and heal the oceans because if he did he would get in the way - and getting in the way has already been declared inappropriate.

90 calcajun  Sun, Aug 31, 2008 10:05:57am

Like I said last night, if this thing goes in through Barataria Bay, it will be very bad indeed.

The levees on the West Bank are no where near completed. I don't think you will see the same loss of life as Katrina, but the flooding could be as bad. The good news is that it's moving fast, the bad news is that it's not moving as far to the west as they originally thought.

91 jemima  Sun, Aug 31, 2008 10:06:05am

Gustav's winds are 120mph, clearly in cat 3 territory. The storm is expected to intensify further back to a cat 4 storm later today over open waters.

Might weaken prior to coming onshore, but still plenty dangerous. I'm going to predict that it makes landfall as a weak cat 4 and tracks just west of NOLA.

This is a chance for the GOP to appear Heroic. Major speeches on site in the Gulf states, with video feed to convention. Large disaster donation from the RNC. Get out in front of the storm GOP!

They are also changing the focus of the convention, apparently to exactly what we suggested last night. Killing the party, turning it into a relief effort.

Bad migraine yesterday and today. Stayed home from church with MR DT out of town. Twelve year old son, Sawyer, made me breakfast in bed, scrambled eggs. The Nine-year-old, Hayden, just brought me water and pain medicine without my asking.

The 7 year old said: "Mom can I go to a friend's house, so the house will be quiet for you?"

Darling daughter Caroline, 18, moved into her dorm yesterday at San Diego State.

Has anybody asked Nagin if New Orleans is chocolate again and what impact will Gustav have on the chocolatification of the crescent city ?

Obviously a White Supremacist Hurricane, out to blow the black man down.

It's named Gustav, a Teutonic/Scandinavian "ice people" name.

It's already hit Haiti, now it's heading for N'awlins.

We will hear this from the Reverend Wright I am sure.

I don't understand something. If Nagin was perfect last time and all deaths and damages were caused by Bush's slow response, see article above, why did Nagin change his MO for Gustov?

Because Bobby Jindal threatened to kick his ass if he didn't. I might even venture a guess that Bobby might have had him arrested.

I think back in '05, Nagin and Blanco didn't want all over TV how the feds led by the eeevil George W Bush were aiding the citizens of Louisiana after a natural disaster. What they hoped for was that the threat of Katrina had been overblown, and that they would muddle through the disaster without federal help.

This time? Jindal declared a disaster with plenty of time to spare, and (I hope) has been riding Nagin like a bronco to RTFM on the disaster plan and follow it. While there may be a lot of damage to property, there will, I hope, be much less human tragedy.

If you go to Lakeview and drive along the 17th Street Canal, you will find that a lot of homes that have been rebuilt are built on SLAB ON GRADE foundations--exactly as they had been originally! Some are built on piers and grade beams, but only 5' off the ground. Very few have been built as many speculated they should be; a lower level garage and the living quarters 11' off the ground. The Koskidz reaction has been pretty tasteless so far but they do have a point on this one.....
Praying for Rain? Be Careful What You Wish For....

Yes, that was Stuart Shepard of Focus on the Family encouraging people to pray for rain of biblical proportions to ruin the Democrat's big night in Denver. How Christian of him, no? And, how oh-so-ironic that Hurricane Gustav is now threatening to derail their own convention. While the residents of the Gulf coast are in our own hearts and prayers as they weather this storm, there does seem to be a sense of justice that New Orleans and memories of Katrina would come back to haunt this Republican convention. The memories of Katrina should rightly haunt them for the rest of their years.

Are you listening Stuart Shepard? Hurricanes qualify as "rain of biblical proportions", don't they? Perhaps God is trying to tell you something. You would do well to heed these signs and atone for your sins.

It was tasteless for Christian groups to pray Biblical rain to befall the Dems just as it's tasteless for the koskidz to gloat over hurricane Gustav.

That's nothing, you should have seen the blog where he took Sarah to task for giving a speech when her waters broke then flew home to Alaska from Texas to give birth. Most of the comments were priceless. For Sarah, and against Skeletor.

So is the RNC still on? You have thousands of angry delegates with pitchforks waiting in MN...

Yes it is still on. As I posted above, it has been announced that the McCain-Palin campaign committee chartered a plane to fly any delegates from MI and LA into MI so they can get home. Fox is saying that the convention has huge numbers of phones being installed, changing the focus to disaster relief/national service.

Fox is reporting right now saying that virtually all of the LA and MI delegates are mostly in MN right now. They felt they had to evacuate anyway so they boarded up their houses, sent their spouses and children off to elsewhere and came to the convention.

Bobby Jindal was scheduled to give address, but feels he must stay in his state to handle the emergency.

The Koskidz reaction has been pretty tasteless so far but they do have a point on this one.....
Praying for Rain? Be Careful What You Wish For....

It was tasteless for Christian groups to pray Biblical rain to befall the Dems just as it's tasteless for the koskidz to gloat over hurricane Gustav.

I suppose so, but I watched the tape and it was clear he was attempting to be funny and said it in jest. It simply wasn't reported that way.

Palin is driving them all crazy. Democrats have to take her down in the next week (they might succeed) or they are in BIG trouble. Palin picks up the independent women where McCain is not strong enough. She can also hammer the democrats on how to bring down the price of gas at the pump, the key economic issue this year. You know what the best thing that can happen here in NOLA? See what areas flood out. Get a map. Draw those areas on that map as DO NOT REBUILD HERE areas. Demolish all buildings in those areas and make them parks or whatever. Let people rebuild in areas that did NOT flood.

Simple, really.

I was having this discussion yesterday. Logically, it just doesn't make sense to keep rebuilding it over and over again. But NO has an awful lot of history and I don't think anyone could swallow it if we just left it behind. Someone pointed out that the truly historic parts, French Quarter etc, really only had between one inch and one foot when the levees failed. That we can manage. So those areas stay; the areas that get swamped have to be abandoned.

Then there's the question of the people who own property in areas that are abandoned. Louisiana and US could buy some land from areas in northern Louisiana (emminent domain?) and hand it over to the people who lost property in the decision above.

Now it looks like the worst case scenario is about to happen. If Gustav hits Plaquemines Parish, then the surge will push water over the sea wall of Lake Ponchartrain and into Metairie and Kenner.

We are beginning to get some breezes now. Right now it feels good, but conditions are going to just get worse from now through tomorrow.

I have to tell you, as awful as these storms are, I can't help but be in absolute awe of the sheer power of nature.

There are lots of trees in my neighborhood, and as the storm gets closer and we begin to get wind gusts - you can hear the roar of the gusts for a minute or two before they reach where you are. It is truly amazing, and as weird as it might sound to some of you, I love the sound of it.

Where you at, reine?

I love how the hits on women are nude photos - whether real or not.

Obama went into his convention already bleeding and on the ropes. The convention did not help. He almost instantly made the mistake of attacking Palin without first even allowing John time to announce his choice and then had to backtrack.

Obama's Dirty Tricks R US Brigade is clutching at straws - any straw. So they've tried disabled baby all Mom's fault, improper prenatal care with the implication of child neglect, cover up of her daughter's pregnancy, incest and an out of wedlock pregnancy of Palin herself. None of those are working, so now they'll try some nude pics.

I would be very surprised if they manage to bring Palin down. Even my daughter who was very upset at the choice of Palin (she disagrees with a couple of her positions on things) is LIVID over the stories. And she had already heard every single one that we've found.

Granny, Agreed. These stories won't take her down. In fact, they elevate her and give her the tempered steel strength voters want to see in their candidates. You can already hear her defenders' speeches about how she has stood up under the most vicious attacks against her and her family by the smears of the Obama supporters and campaign. Thank you, but keep the Change.

re: #221 The Pulchritudinous Patriot

Prayers are needed...I grew up in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans.

We were blessed, as a family, after Katrina as only one of my many (14) cousins and their families lost their home. We had Aunts and Uncles and Cousins (40 people in all) split between my place, my parents place and my sister's place, for 40 days after Katrina.

Now it looks like the worst case scenario is about to happen. If Gustav hits Plaquemines Parish, then the surge will push water over the sea wall of Lake Ponchartrain and into Metairie and Kenner.

My family will loose everything but their lives as thankfully they are smart enough to get the hell out.

But still...I've lost everything to a flood, and even with insurance, you still feel devistated.

The fact that scum like Michael Moore and some of the Dem reps are gloating over the storm hitting during the convention is just, well it's just ...words cannot express the anger I am feeling.

I grew up there. I have family there. I love New Orleans, inspite of the idiot mayor. I live in Houston now, and I am making ready to recieve my loved ones. But New Orleans is my people. You will never find a culture as unique and wonderful as that culture. It saddens me. In spite of he politics, the colourfullness of the town is dimmed and will dimm further. If you've never been there then you cannot understand the loss. So much history.

I am in tears at the thought of my childhood home being destroyed. I cannot believe that there are such callous people in the world who aren Islamo- facists.

I just had to rant. I am ill with grief.

I'm so sorry. It is not easy to lose everything. Keep your chin up.

Sixth person arrested in anarchist investigation; advocate says one is being denied meds and vegan food

The Ramsey County sheriff's office confirmed today that a sixth person was arrested as part of its investigation into an anarchist group that allegedly had plans to disrupt the Republican National Convention.

Luce Guillen-Givens, 23, was arrested Saturday in Minneapolis, said sheriff's office spokeswoman Holli Drinkwine. She is being held on suspicion of three conspiracy counts - to riot, commit civil disorder and damage property. Those are the same counts that five people were arrested on Saturday in Minneapolis.

Guillen-Givens and the others are reportedly leaders of the RNC Welcoming Committee, a self-described anarchist group, according to the sheriff's office. The sheriff's office executed search warrants on Friday night and Saturday. Sheriff Bob Fletcher said there were weapons and material recovered that could be used in the group's planned "tactics to blockade and disable delegate buses, breaching venue security and injuring police officers."

The National Lawyers Guild has said the material were common household items and the RNC Welcoming Committee's Web site has never stated or discussed plans for violence during the RNC, including against law enforcement.

The arrested are now being held in the Ramsey County jail.

An item posted this morning on Twitter, an online social-networking service, by the locally-based Coldsnap Legal Collective said one of the people arrested, Erik Oseland, was being denied medication and vegan food.

Vegan meals are available at the Ramsey County jail, though no one has asked for them, Drinkwine said this morning.

The horror.

ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUS ALERT!

A friend of mine just sent me this blurb that she came across on a blog located here - [Link: stephendann.com...]

I’m calling it here and now: Track Palin will be the October surprise
to rally the “patriot”
vote as he is killed or wounded in action in Iraq.
It would be
exceptionally easy to arrange for it to happen through something as
basic as a calculated troop movement of his squad into a known red zone,
or just planting an IED somewhere “hostile” that he’s sent to patrol.
It’s a big war, and there’s plenty of ways to do this easily if you’ve
got the motive, money, and no regard for human life.

The REAL surprise, that I came up with last night, is that McCain is going to announce he's a 1-termer. He's refused to do so thus far, and now with Palin on the ticket this is the perfect opportunity for McCain to guarantee a woman running for POTUS in 2012.

Is Alan Colmes crazy? First he implied Down's Syndrome was caused by Palin's flight back to Alaska after her water broke, now he gleefully counts back the months of wedding to birth of Palin's first as if the world would rise up against her for doing the right thing. I am in awe of his bizarre attempts to slander Palin. It is causing Colmes to become a lunatic before our eyes.

Having a black man and a woman competing on the Dem ticket at the same time has triggered crazy within the Dem party on a level that I've not seen in my lifetime.

Eight weeks out of the election, it's obvious that the Democratic party has completely ruptured from the inside... the natural result of years of bloating, disease, corruption and scarring from the infected pox of the unfettered radical left.

The unending stream vile filth that is now spilling out of the ruptured gut of the Democratic party has been there all along, only now it's so ugly and so putrid and so obvious that Dems are jumping ship in record numbers to avoid contamination.

It's due in large part to the disenfranchised Hillary voters who are disgusted by the good-old-boys treatment that Hillary received at the hands of their own party leaders and who find themselves sandwiched between the glorious ascension of the Obamessiah and "the most ethical congress EVER" with eyes wide open.

I made the decision years ago to leave this diseased party behind me and embrace moderation, and I hope that many more Dems join me in the coming months. It's time to restore dignity, decency, cooperation and common sense to American politics. Long past time.

Yall listening to Bobby Jindal? He is my new hero.

Unfortunately, he's aided and abetted the Intelligent Design groupies in LA of late. This may play OK on the home field, but it isn't going to help at all when it comes to the Nationals.

Although Palin has expressed non-disagreement with ID, she has taken no steps at all toward imposing it on public school students under the guise of science. Good on her. I have no problem with people who have closely held religious beliefs. It's only when they try to impose their religion on others - the ultimate purpose of ID - that they run afoul of my temperament.

Yeah, I said that Gustav hitting Lousiana on the same day as the Republican Convention starting in Minnesota was clear proof that God existed in the universe and He has a wicked sense of humor.  You can tell that just by looking at me.

Well, sparrows are dying from the heat in Arizona, suicide bombers are killing people in the MidEast, and Charles continues to be married to that horse-faced woman in England ... all on the day the GOP Convention is starting.  Clearly God is sending a message here.

However, that the 3rd anniversary of Katrina hitting Louisiana was during Obama's speech and ascension to the masses at the Democratic Convention, though, was just a coincidence.

These storms get their energy from the warm sea water. Which in turn comes from our Sun.

Someone had a great idea for tapping into this energy source in a more direct way almost forty years ago.

Powersats are the future - probably 100+ years out, but Japan has just started a major feasability project. And it won't run out for billions of years.

Would it be better or easier to capture a hurricane, or prevent it? Prevention is "easy", just shade half the Carribean with solar shades, much easier than capturing the energy. As great as it would be to have a bunch of giant windmills just suck it down, they'd have to be seriously giant, miles high, we can't do that. However, a system of devices to capture ocean temperature gradients *might* be possible, how deep is the Carribean anyway? Ah yes, terraforming! Change!

397 Anna  Sun, Aug 31, 2008 11:22:50am

Oh gee, Fox is reporting that Obama is not going into the potential disaster areas. He will send out an email to all two million later on asking them to help in the relief efforts. Just wonder if this will be another 3am text message?

Sen. McCain, flanked by his wife, two sons, and Gov. Palin also said, at the Pearl, MS MEMA EOC; that the Republican convention will shift to an effort to help Americans.

As for Nagin's press klatch. He was a bit robotic as if needing a teleprompter. He got one thing very wrong though. He said if Gustav shifted east 30 miles would be worse. Wrong! If Gustav shifted east 30 miles then the northeast quadrant winds and waves would wipe out the Mississippi and Alabama costs, not overtop the levees of New Orleans as the predicted landfall tommorow around Cutoff, LA probably will.

Pray for everyone in the path. Cousins from the North Shore are now in McComb, MS. My parents are not required to evac from the MS Gulf Coast so are staying put in their house that survived Katrina with only a little wind damage.

And Lord grant me Your grace and wisom so I never become as petty and mean-spirited as the slugs who gleefully want Gustav to ruin Republican careers without regard to the lives that Gustav may take. Protect even them while You shield the people caught in the storm's path.

It's the only Chocolate city. Lilly White cities don't matter.

No, but it's the most populated, I think. The thing that makes this a news story is the Katrina factor....but if it hits Plaquemines Parish the devistation from the surge will be biblical. If there is a hit on Plaquemines the surge will be driven into Lake Borgne and into Lake Ponchartrain, the sea walls (depending on the height of the surge) most likely won't be able to contain the water.

Flooding will take place in Metairie and Kenner...most of the residents of the area live in these areas...these areas have made a faster recovery post Katrina and are propping the city up financially.

It's a disaster scenario...one we grew up knowing was an eventuality.

I am looking at the left fringe swelling, getting bigger, getting more violent, more militant in their idealism.

And from listening to fellow conservatives...

I got the feeling that somewhere down the line that there is going to be a civil war in America.

I'm in.

He dares to invoke God. Gah, stay away from this super sized turd in a thunderstorm, or in line at Burger King for that matter.

I live in Pensacola. Gustav is gonna pass to our west, and slam into New Orleans. We here are apparently dodging a major bullet, and just registering a breeze as the monster passes by.

But the people who are in this cataclysm's sights had better be either moving or preparing to die.

It's not merely about evacuation. It's also about the loss of all that is familiar. You know, like your home, favorite chair, regular routine. Jeesh!

As opposed to dying and not having the opportunity to restart anything.

Maybe a seasoned lizard can help me. What happens on dead threads? Is there some fun on them that I don't know about? Are there troll butts to kick?

Dead threads are what happens between midnight and whenever Charles gets up. Join us to find out. Yes, sometimes a troll shows up.

can't even stand to read it. Makes my eyes burn. I hate that fucking piece of shit with every fiber of my being. I would love to personally escort that Jabba the Hut, 12 sandwich eating, ugly, hateful, Canadian back to his homeland.

*spit.

I don't think the Canadians deserve that. Better that we ship him off to Russia.

Ah yeah, we have seen this before. Get out!

Tough shit. Eric, you are an anarchist! You expect what YOU want in jail? Really? Then, you can hardly call yourself an "anarchist" then, can ya, ya puss!

Give 'em a comfy prison cot!

Prisoners these days seem to have more rights than soldiers. I can imagine a soldier telling a DI he's a vegan and can't eat that SOS. The DI would say you're what crybaby?, and immediately tell him soldiers eat meat, raw if need be and from now on he is a meat eatin' carnivore.

ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUS ALERT!

A friend of mine just sent me this blurb that she came across on a blog located here - [Link: stephendann.com...]

That is so despicable and outrageous—I have no words...

re: #340 Irish Rose

Very well stated, Rose. Bravo!

I don't think we would win that.

Sometimes, evil wins.

A shooting civil war between the left and right would be very bad. I fear an echo of Venezuela.
